Hi there i live in the UK and im looking for spare parts to fix my Broken XDA II. I need to replace the charger / usb port and was wondering if any knows where i can get these parts from so that i can fix it my self. I would rather buy and fix the parts my self than paying some one else to do it for me as this costs me a fortune.

Many thks for your help.

Just make sure not to use PDASMART. They are not reliable at all.

I posted the same question few months ago, and I was told to contact merconline. I wrote them an e-mail, but still haven't received an answer.
If anyone knows where can we purchase that bottom connector, we will be very thankful.

cheers,

Hi everyone,
I just googled a little, and found this web sites that sell spare parts:

http://www.ipaqrepair.co.uk/view_product.php?product=554

This site is for ipaq's but can anyone confirm that we can use this connector for our qtek's/imate's/xda's etc???

Also, this is even better option:

http://www.imate-shop.com/product_info.php?currency=USD&products_id=39

I beleive this is what we need, I wrote them an e-mail, to check if they ship worldwide.

cheers,

This is the IPAQ connector

This is from pinouts.ru
Can moderators confirm that this means the 22-pin connector from the ipaq 3800 can be used in the qtek2020

http://pinouts.ru/data/pda_wallaby_pinout.shtml

Wallaby and Himalaya come with two connectors on the bottom. Also for MDA, XDA, Eurotel DataPhone.
22 pin male Himalaya special connector layout
22 pin male Himalaya special connector at the PDA (keypad up)

The connector pinout
1 CAR_MIC_IN
2 GND / SENSE
3 CAR_AUDIO_R
4 CAR_AUDIO_L
5 ANALOG GND
6 RS232_DCD
7 RS232_CTS
8 RS232_TXD
9 RS232_RTS
10 RS232_RXD
11 RS232_DTR
12 NC
13 USB_VDD
14 UDC+
15 UDC-
16 GND
17 GND
18 GND
19 CAR_ON#
20 V_ADP
21 V_ADP
22 V_ADP

Notes:
CAR_ON# is connected to +6V/+5V on the car charger, it"s not connected in the cradle. +6V/+5V makes the phone go to speaker mode immediately when picked up or dialing. When this pin is connected to ground, the internal mike and speaker are turned off, and audio input is taken from the audio input pin on the connector, for use in real car kits.
Pin 2 GND / SENSE is not necessary. it seems that if it"s grounded, the phone hangs up when placed in a DIY Car-holder for example. - leave it unconnected.
Pin 5 ANALOG GND - connect this to your sound Input/output-GND (Speaker/Microphone) - do not connect this with the other GND"s - it makes a lot of noise on the analog input/outputs. Audio needs to be capacitively coupled in, any DC bias seems to inhibit audio.

If RS232_DCD is pulled to +6V/+5V, the device turns on and ActiveSync is started. The serial port powers down and needs to be reopened after the device goes in power-save mode.

USB power also wakes up the device and starts ActiveSync. UDC+ and UDC- are the USB data connections. One person reported measuring them the other way around.
Cable to plug into computer

This is the cable you need to talk to the Wallaby or Himalaya serially from a computer, such as is needed with our Manipulator program or for using ActiveSync through the serial port. Techies like us call it a "null-modem cable", O2 describes it as a "serial hotsync cable". Optionally, if you wish to be able to power/charge to XDA while using this cable, you could hook up a female connector that mates with the connector on your power adapter between Ground (pins 2,5,etc. on XDA) and pins 20,21 and 22 on the XDA. Make sure the center conductor on the power connector goes to pins 20,21 and 22.

Cable to plug into modem or GPS

This cable will connect to devices which come with a cable to plug into a PC serial port, such as a modem. If you are connecting to a device that only uses RX, TX and GND (such as many GPS receivers), you may only need the wires which connect to pins 2, 3 and 5 on the 9-pin serial connector. And you can, optionally, hook up a charging interface in the same way as described above.

All,

I had the same problem myself...i had several quotes, and finally went with Expansys ( see PDA repair on their website). It takes about 2-3 weeks although they do say up to 6 weeks. the cost was about £50 in total inc postage and VAT.

I finally received the part ordered from ipaqrepairs.co.uk, cost was 10 pounds and then another 10euros for replacement of the connector, but I got my Himalaya now up and running :)
I guess this is the cheapest way for everyone with this problem, so check it out :)
My details are:

I need a Sync/Charge Port Repair

If I purchase a new connector from here:

can anyone close to me with the soldering skills and experience
fit it for me?

I am in the North East in Stockton-On-Tees, I'm quite happy to drive right up to Leeds Area (South) or Newcastle Areas (North)

I'd feel better in doing this on my xda 2 if there were some pictures
of taking the thing apart to illustrate rather then working blind.

like what's up with that void sticker under the battery?

Have you got pics or a sync/charge socket replacement repair being done?
What quality of soldering tools do you need? fine?

I have no idea how it looks like. As I said, I just took it to the repair center, went out for a coffe, and came back in 20 minutes. My Qtek was already charging. Hope I was of some help :)

The void sticker is put there by the manufacturer for warranty reasons. To take the thing apart you need to remove the screw that's underneath that sticker. Mine has already been removed... as O2 wouldn't honour a warranty claim that HP, Compaq, T-Mobile and every other PDA manufacturer would. Thieving $%@*'s!!!

The part itself is a surface mount part. The best way to solder one of these things is with as fine a soldering iron as possible. You can get a decent enough soldering iron from eBay for about £40. Try also to get a flux pen or dispenser. These should also be on eBay somewhere.

What follows isn't exactly specific to repairing the XDA... it's more for any surface mount device, really. You need a pair of tweezers, fine multicore solder, a flux pen and a decent iron. Solder braid is also invaluable. All of this will be on eBay cheaply enough.

1. Clean the pads with the solder braid. Put a dab of solder on to the tip of the iron. While it's still smoking, put it on top of the braid which you've already put on the pad. Keep it there until the solder on the pad is sucked up by the braid. Don't leave it too long or you'll damage the pad.

2. Put a dab of solder on one of the end pads. You only need a little.

3. Hold the part close to the pads with the tweezers. Heat the pad you've soldered and move the correct pin onto the pad. Adjust the part until it sits where it should.

4. Solder the other pins of the part. You only need a small amount of solder. You should see a fillet of solder down the side and end of the pin. You should still be able to see the shape of the pin from the top.

5. Go back to the first pin. Dab some solder flux on to it and then retouch with the iron to melt the solder. Once it's liquid, remove it straight away. This resolders the joint preventing a dry joint the initial positioning will almost certainly have created.

Alternatively, desolder that pin with braid and resolder.

6. Ensure there are no solder bridges between the pins. Remember, the joints should look smooth and shiny. If they're grey or lumpy, chances are you've got a dry joint and it needs resoldering.

7. Use a stiff brush to remove the flux residue.

8. Let it cool down. Put the battery back in and test it.

9. If all is OK, re-assemble your PDA, pat yourself on the back and feel smug for saving your money and doing a good job yourself!!

HTH,

Schneckster

Can someone with a voltmeter tell me what voltages the battery should put out and on which pin ? My himilaya's batt is dead and I don't have any cables or charger to test it prior to purchasing a battery.
Thanks, George
