Yes you can delete and modify the contents now.

Even after a Hard and Soft reset the Ext rom will be the same!!!!!

I have the 10mb of the extendedrom2 now visible ok. I have already previously installed the cabs and stuff I wanted using total commander before unlocked it with your tool. I have then 2.63mb of files in the extendedrom, can I move these to my pc or a storage card (not one I'm using with phone) and delete them from the extendedrom to make 10mb space? Or am I being stupid ?

No, it isn't. It's just another 10 Megs of Storage you can use. But it is not concatenated with the main storage. A BigStorage Hack has still to be made. I'm sure Buzz will come up with one.

I found a lot of TMO (T-Mobile) Files in the Extended Rom. But i don´t want to delete all of them. I don´t want to loose my MMS and GPRS Settings. Which of these files would you recommend me to delete and which not? Have a look at my Screenshot!

Ok, I went into the extended rom2 folder and copied the files to a 16mb mini sd card for safe keeping. Put my 512mb mini sd back in and went into the folder and deleted all the files, there were about 2.63 mb of them.

I soft reset it and i did not lose my GPRS or other settings, everything worked the same. To hard reset it, I copied the files back into directory from the mini sd card and simply hit soft reset before it autoinstalled them. I then just installed the ones I wanted, I used total commander for no particular reason. So you can remove the files, but on Hard reset you need to put them back otherwise you would not have the settings for GPRS or the camera fix, unless you want to add the GPRS manually which is a pain.

I mean you don't hard reset too often when the phone is running ok, so its not really a problem but deleting them but having a backup gives you the full 10mb.

Mine is still called Storage card. All that happened to my device (vario) that was a little odd is that the extended rom suddenly became the place that the pictures are stored, and I had not set it to put pics on min sd card. Odd huh !

I'm afraid I'm not at all clear about this unlocking, and "extended ROM", so my question may seem painfully obtuse.

1. Does unlocking mean that I can use my new T-Mobile Vario with other SIMs? I have some ORANGE SIM's (handed down to me by my kids when they upgraded. If unlocked, what's the advantage of switching SIM's as I'm getting "free" calls as part of the T-Mobile package.

2. I'm familiar with ROM, but what's the function of this "extended ROM"?

That been said I think it apears if you enable save attachments to SD in you mail options.... mail must see it as a 'virtual drive for want of better wording.

Removed this app and I can no longer see the Storage Card with the mail folder in File Explorer.. I can how ever still see it in Active Sync explore..

Now what I'd like to know ( if possible ) is how ( with out a hard reset ) do I get rid of that and rename my storage card to 'storage card' instead of 'storage card2' which is also still there.

The CAB worked awesome for me. Now got 9.33mb free space in the Extended_ROM2 folder after removing most of the crap.

My storage card got renamed Storage Card2, but I only had three apps installed there so changing the shortcuts wasn't hard.

If you have all your contacts in Outlook on your PC there won't be a problem. You just hard reset and sync them across again. I have a Vario and I just flashed an I-Mate rom across runs much better with it and its much easier to customise the ROM. The Wifi is G instead of B too works much better.

All I kept from the T-Mob rom was the .CAB file that sets up your gprs and the .cab file that is called disco button, basically it lets you turn gprs off from the top menu.

it doesn't work with my Wizard 100. Tried also with the second file and softreset a couple of times. It shows the content of extended Rom and i can also delete all the files, but after hardreset all the files are there again.... If i try to copy files to extended rom it says, that the volume is write protected....
Any hints ???

On my device the files in the extended rom keep reappearing after a soft reset. I did it on a Wizard / Vario of T-MO.
I can delete everything and write files into the ext.rom2, or with total commander to the ext_rom folder, but after a soft reset, everything i placed into it is gone and the default files are back in the extrom. :? :x

don't know what else i can try ?

So after applied the "Extended ROM Unlocker" of this thread, the extended rom shows in the file explorer but the files inside cannot be modified or deleted.

Could some genius create something to unlock the extended rom in new Wizard ROMs instead of just unhide it? Thanks a lot!

I can confirm that on the 1.6.x roms it is locked in some way yes..
It doesn't seem to be a registry setting, for as far as my humble knowledge goes, i tried for 3 days looking what should do the job, but cannot find a way. After a soft reset, everything is back in the extrom.

This program worked great when I was running the K-JAM rom. When I upgraded to the new T-Mobile ROM over the weekend, it now shows up but you can not write to. They must be doing something with the new firmware.

I regretted unhiding the extended rom. It doesn't serve much except the fact that I have approx. 10mb of additional storage. However, it doesn't allow me to install programs onto the extended rom (I can choose this location but I don't see the program folders).

The biggest problems for me are as follow: -

1. Storage Card became Storage Card2. Needless to say, those programs that I installed previously do not work anymore. Need to redo all the shortcuts. :roll:

2. When using the camera, the photos are now stored in the extended rom and not storage card. I can only take a max of less than 10 pic and memory runs out. I have to manually move the pics to the storage card before I can snap pics again. :evil:

Can the experts here tell me how to fix problem 2?

do NOT try install app on extended rom! that's the way I destroy mine on axim x30. extended rom is for files to recover hard reset. if you need it just use TotalCommander, don't unlock it. if you allready unlock it then search the forum to find "Hide Ext Rom Wizard.cab". the name says all.

In Explorer, for Extended ROM a folder called "StorageCard" was made.

My solution was as follows:
- Rename "Storage Card" into "Storage ROM" (or something else you like ;-) )
- Remove Mini-SD
- Turn off Vario
- Put back Mini-SD
- Turn Vario back on again

Now in Explorer everything seems to be normal again

After a bit i decided that i really didn't need it viewable...so i go and un-install MyLovingWifes Unlocker....This was like 2 weeks ago...
Not only till today did i decide to take a look at my extended_rom again...
So i go into total Commander and type in \Extended_Rom
and i don't see what i'm suppose to see
I see 3 files with weird character names.
I would post a screenshot but i don't have an app to do so...
the closest i can replicate the folder names is:

I have the same problem, I can't even see what's inside my ExtROM anymore. Only that it took around 5MB of size but I couldn't see what was in that 5MB space. Can I just reflash it with the same ROM and got it working normally again (I mean so I can see what files are inside it)?

I installed the unlock extendend memory cab and i had all kind of problems.
The camera problems, not able to store foto's on storage card.
Extend memory was read only, unable to write anything.
Extend memory displayed scrambled files.

Now i just run the t-mobile update rom wizard and everything seems to be fine again.
The camera sees the storage card again, and the extended rom is hidden again.

I think this is a bad unlock utility, and who needs just a 10 Mb memory when you can buy a 1G sd-card for just about 20 euro.

Thank god the rom-update restored my mda-vario just the way it was.

Please don't leave this unfinished. My understanding of the matter after i ran the cab is,

1) the new storage card folder is not for extended rom. its just another folder which is created and reflects free storage memory. this can be verified by running both the storage card indicator and storage indicator in SPB pocket plus. They show exactly the same reading at all points of time. Another way to verify this is to take a reading of the available memory from the inbuilt memory function, cut some large files residing in storage memory and paste them to the storage card folder. Then take a reading of the available memory again. It does not change. The new folder called storage card is Useless. You can delete it without any trouble. By doing that, most of the original storage card functions will be restored. Minisd card will show as Storage Card again.

2) A large part of the problem is caused by Extended_Rom2 folder being visible. Hide it by reversing the registry settings used to unhide as discussed in this forum. This would reverse the residual effect of running the cab almost completely. Extended_Rom2 not only disappears but ceases to exist. This can be verified by searching for it using GSFinder. Extended_Rom is still visible in GSFinder but not writable.(or is it?)

3) it is obvious that large files cannot be copied to Extended_Rom. But small files can be copied and Folders can be created. These do not survive a soft reset. there seems to be a size limitation of 64k in copying. Also there are some registry entries that may need attention,

Maybe Buzz 'n' gang can try figure this. I tried making some changes, but nothing seems to be making a difference.

4) Any tool which is Work in progress can be bad under certain circumstances. Saying it's a bad tool doesnt serve any purpose. anyone trying out these tools should be ready to restore registry / reflash or both. Apart from the fact that participation in these forums and trying out tools is purely voluntary, enough warnings exist through the posts to warn the faint hearted off.

Lets try complete this project... :)

My extended rom is write protected after using this hack. Please let me know the best way to remove or fix. Understand I'm a programming-tard.

Thanks for helping out! I followed directions to a tee and I just bought a $400 brick.

If you install this hack, and it dose not work, do not attempt to remove using the uninstall. It will trash your phone. I installed and is hacked my memory like the texas chainsaw masacre. My songs would not sync. Camera would not recognize the storage card, ect ect. So I used the uninstall command and the snow ball went faster down hill. No memory was recognized.

Then if you try to hard boot, you won't be able to recover. If you try to overwrite your rom, you'll get error 326. Any you'll have to CID unlock. Hopefully you can understand how to pull that off before your phone battery dies. It dose not charge while the ROM is down.

Instead of uninstalling using remove program, just try overwriting your ROM.

Forum Masters, please consider removing this program from the WIKI. Its not ready, and the advantages are too few for the risk.

Unlock works great on my MDA Vario.

Had following as well:

The biggest problems for me are as follow: -

1. Storage Card became Storage Card2. Needless to say, those programs that I installed previously do not work anymore. Need to redo all the shortcuts. :roll:



In Explorer, for Extended ROM a folder called "StorageCard" was made.

My solution was as follows:
- Rename "Storage Card" into "Storage ROM" (or something else you like ;-) )
- Remove Mini-SD
- Turn off Vario
- Put back Mini-SD
- Turn Vario back on again

Now in Explorer everything seems to be normal again

btw there's no need to remove the miniSD. Just rename the Storage Card folder to something else you can remember so you can delete it later. Then soft reset, the Storage Card is now set to the miniSD. Then just delete the unneeded folder.

So the camera can only see one card and picks the first one?

smething very unusual happened to me. i deleted one file in extrom, made a soft reset and i don't have any more files in the extrom. even the t-mobile customization won't start (autorun.exe) and besto of all i have a cid locked g4 device (i was unable to delete any file from the ext rom till today). can anyone help me to get my ext rom back (i still want my warranty) - thanx

I think the cab file in the first page is used to "Unhide" extrom, not "Unlock".
You can browse extrom in File manager but you'd better not write on it, this will brick your Extrom really!

i have IPL/SPL 3.09 and i'm running faria's WM6 The Real Thing. i ran the unlocker and everything seemed to go fine. i did the soft reset like i was supposed to and was able to view the extended rom. faria's WM6 has all the carrier config. cabs stored in the ext. rom for auto configuration after install. i've already configured for my carrier (cingular) so i don't need these cabs. i deleted them and all went fine. about five minutes later my mda froze up and i had to soft reset. it freezes all the time now. i later noticed that my extended was corrupted...there's a bunch of files and folders in it that have weird characters for file names and they can't be deleted. when i view them from my computer, several of them show as being multiple GB's in size. what i'm wondering is this: can i re-flash faria rom, and overwrite the corrupted extended rom to fix this?

You haven't said if you have a G3 or G4. Personally, I'd suggest you flash back to your carrier's official ROM and see if that corrects the Extended ROM (since those ROMs should reload that area).

While this Extendend ROM unlocker is cool, its also very dangerous and shouldn't be used (IMO) unless you have a real need to do this.

I was running Faria's WM6 Real Thing and I use the un-locker. Everything was great for me for a few hours then I did a soft reset and the Ex Rom was corrupt. It was full of weird symbols, I just flashed with the T-Mobile official ROM then back to WM6 Real Thing, fixed everything.

Don't bother m8. Ever since bootloader (SPL) 1.06 that the extended_ROM is locked and impossible (so far) to unlock.

Ive been here for a good while, I got my g3 when my local tmob sto got them in, and this site is the first place I came, I think the tmob rom lasted about 15 mins after I signed up...

In that time I have seen maybe 3-4 of these so called unlockers, and everytime it was hard reset city w/ a flash to get it all fixed up , since with a fubared EXT-rom you have no hard reset, you have to flash a new rom...

the first generation unlocker/unhider made it visible, but if you made any changes, it garbled every file in the ext-rom(pretty nasty).

the second generation had these same kind of unforeseen consequences to the filesystem.

sadly this is just a rehash of the 2nd gen (as I call it) and it has been long enough to rope in tons of unsuspecting tinkerers.

Id like to see the ext rom opened and FULLY usable, and I hope it happens.

I used to cook(we called it editing) palm os3/4 roms for my rom3x and sony clie, so this was right up my alley, they were much simpler and easier to cook, but opening the roms was the key, at the end you could edit your rom ONBOARD AND FLASH THE CHANGES, SOFT RESET AND GO... those were the days, if you used a palm os handheld, in the IIIx hayday its a walk down memory lane, know your roots h11p://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/os4/

The only usefull hack for this would be to expand the program memory. 10MB isn't that big a deal for storage.

Ok, note to self: read all the way to end of thread before installing CAB files that don't work for all versions.

Now, I've read uninstalling the CAB file (in the first post) is going to brick my Wizard. So can someone tell me how to hide this Extended Rom folder again, AND get rid of the CAB file that's installed on my phone & get back the option to save pics from camera to Storage Card?
Can I do a hard reset and be OK? All the files in the Extended Rom are as they were - not garbled or anything.

Quick reply would be great if poss.

Again, my phone is OK - I've soft reset a couple of times and aside from apps loaded on the SD card not working,everything is fine.
I also backed up all content in the Ext Rom folder in case I need to restore them somehow.

I've done a good few searches on the forum and found a few people with screwed up Wizards. I've not got the capacity to flash the ROM at this stage so really need some pointers here please.

Oh well. I did find a few with the same problem and no asnwers so I'll post this in case anyone else does the same and doesn't know what to do. I'm back to normal now.


Made these registry settings:

Soft reset.
All done.
I think I got lucky as my Wizard is brand new so no settings had been made to save anything on the SD card, so there as no renaming of Storage Card. I also have OS 1.6.2.4 and I believe that means I can't delete anything from Extended Rom to screw it up - and I couldn't.

Hope this helps someone in the future anyway.
I do think that first post should be edited to warn people that later Wizards cannot benefit from using the file, and it'll only lead to trouble.
I'm not a complete noob - my first ROM flash was on the HTC Canary (mine was Orange SPV) 5 years ago.. I just been out of the game for a while and took my eye off the ball for a moment ;)
