Had the o2 Exec for 5-weeks or so, so outside the replace with new period.
Only noticed last night that there is a worrying bulge appearing in the case. It's on the surround of the keyboard, just above the left-hand softkey, to the right of the Xda Exec label, and dead in-line with the USB port. The bulge is about .75mm high, rises sharply at the left-end then falls gradually to a slight dip adjacent to the right-hand soft-key. It looks like something has expanded underneath the panel (over heating?) pushing the surface upwards. Has anyone else had this happen?

Might be pure coincidence, but my PDA is normally charged via USB, however this last week I've left it connected to the mains supply overnight - screen closed. The level difference is quite obvious to your finger when you press the soft-key, but because I don't use them, I've only just noticed it.

I always leave mine connected overnight, for the past 5 dats since I got mine. I did not notice any bulging.

Did you check te battery?
I had one of my phones suddenly develop a similar bulge, and it turned out that the battery overnight had expanded to twice the original width.
The battery (and the phone alas) was dead after that though.

Yes, I just checked it right now. As I had said I kept it plugged-in every night for 12 hours for 5 days since I got my EXEC. No bulges. It is only today that I am keeping it unplug and see how the battery last.

Have removed the battery and checked inside. Nothing appears distorted within the battery or compartment, no smell of overheating, etc.
Looking further it appears the bulge is just to the right of a screw holding the case halves together. Similarly, the dip near the right-hand softkey is at another screw location. So perhaps there was something (cable?) trapped when the case halves were originally assembled, and that I hadn't noticed the bulge until now.

Looks as though I'll have to answer the question: "Do you feel lucky, Punk?" and try opening the case up  .

Er, anyone got any 'How to do it tips'? Hope they haven't hidden more screws under labels.

Do NOT open it up. You may well invalidate your warranty.

Contact your supplier and explain.

They will replace it or arrange for repair under warranty.

The 14 day return period does not invalidate your statutory rights of 28 days and then 1 subsequent year of trouble free operation.

My supplier is o2! They tell me that I will only ever get back a repaired/used unit. With this one exception the current unit is in as-new condition, no scratches or marks of any sort. A colleage has already gone through this. Despite complaints, he has received two "repaired" units, both badly scratched (including the screen) or dented, one caught fire the day it arrived, the other continually hangs even with no additional software installed.

Thank you all the same, but having the correct tools and anti-static environment, I would prefer my own repair!

Doubt that's going to get me anywhere, since any contract I have is with the supplier not the manufacturer. Although the supplier could refer the matter to the manufacturer, the manufacturer has no legal responsibility to even talk to me, let alone repair or replace since they didn't sell me the product, o2 did!

I'm wondering if what you're seeing may be normal. Looking at my I-Mate Jasjar I'm seeing a similar thing. I can see it if I put the keyboard just below eye level and look across the top of the keyboard toward the back of the unit.

In my case, I have a slight dip just above my right softkey and also a bit of a bulge that goes all the way across from the middle of the left soft key to the dip above the right soft key. I'm not sure mine rises quite as sharply as you describe, nor does it seem to be quite as high, but it's definitely there. I had never noticed it before, but to me it looks like it's meant to be there.

Just had a (very close) look and mine shows similar bulges/dips in the case where you describe. No way I'd have noticed it without your description so maybe mine isn't as bad as yours. You really have to get the light right to see the unevenness in the case.

I don't see the problem though if your machine is working. :? Why risk invalidating the warranty by disturbing the case screws?

More of a problem when nobody else appeared to have the bulge, and after my colleague's Exec took up smoking.

Anyway, others might like to know that the case bottom is held on by more than the four visible screws in the battery compartment.
