Sync via Bluetooth

Can the O2 XDA 2 be sync'd via bluetooth with a laptop or is the USB cradle all we have to work with?

That second link fixed things. I was getting confused with the part where I was clicking on "Get Connected" option in ActiveSync, on the PC, which was not finding my device.

I instead initiated the sync via the PDA using the Tools\Connect via Bluetooth which is what worked for me.
