Hello,

i have upgraded to a new ROM version which indeed required to install all custom apps and apply all settings (user info, e-mail etc.) again.

SpriteBackup is releasing a WM5 Edition on 07.Feb 2006 and my plan would be to prepare backup of all installation files & settings so that after a future ROM Upgrade i'd be able just to restore the custom part on the new ROM.

Could it be generally (im)possible?? What are the concerns?

What exactly is happening during ROM upgrade? Is there an area in the extended ROM/ROM where the out-of-the-box OS files are stored? After a hard-reset, the system is re-initialized - so where are these files located ?

Could someone please explain the Wizard/WM5 file system topology?

Thank you
Chris

I'm also interested in an answer for that question(s)!

I want to upgrade my rom but not lose all of my settings. I thought I could do da backup with SPB, upgrade the ROM and install the backup.exe ...

I only wonder if that would cause any problems to windows or some other/new parts as the registry will get re-imported, too.

Does anyone has a well-working strategy on how to upgrade to a new rom without losing your old data/programmes/settings?

Thanks in advance!

I am also very reluctant to perform the upgrade since it will require the loss of all my SMS's as well as reinstalling of all apps. I am running the first version of the Qtek ROM, 1.1.7.5 (9/22/05) and radio version 01.01.10 so I really need to upgrade.

I have Sprite Backup for WM5 and if it were an option to restore after a ROM upgrade I would be very satisfied.

If anyone can suggest how I could accomplish this I would be very greatful.

As I understand it, previous incarnations of Sprite Backup allowed you to download special filters for backup/restore which were suitable for reinstalling everything after a ROM upgrade. I believe that each of these filters was written for each specific device, and I don't think they were guaranteed to work with all futur ROM upgrades.

I believe the problems lies with the registry. When doing an upgrade, it is overwritten - in order to facilitate any changes or upgrades to the ROM. Unfortunately, the user-installed program use the same registry to store all their settings and install details. If you backup the registry before an upgrade, and then rewrite it, you'll overwrite all the upgrade imporvements.
