Am getting ready to start a couple of test development projects on my
Windows Mobile 5.0 device.

First question - is there support anywhere for additional language packs?

This is a WM5.0 ROM 1.6.7.1 WWE device (Qtek 9100 - HTC - Wizard).

Or does WM5 require regional versions to be installed for language support in that region?

Would also be greatful for a brief explanation of the WM5.0 lineage.

Is Windows Mobile 5.0 - really a Pocket PC Phone edition?

What flavor of Windows do Smart Phones use?

Does Windows CE still exist?

Any help or info greatly appreciated.

Hi, Waters.

Here are some brief answers in order, hope they help: :)

1. On WM systems installing support for other languages is tricky so if you don't have a device with local ROM you will have to pay for and install special software. One company I know that does a lot of localization is Paragon ( www.penreader.com )

2. WM5 – Windows Mobile 2005 the latest version of OS for PPC platform, preceded by WM 2003 (4.2, 4.21 second edition – VGA support) and WM 2002 (3.0) etc.

3. All WM versions come in both regular and phone edition, WM5 is no different. The phone edition simply has the extra support for phone integrated devices, like drivers, dialer programs, etc.

4. Smart phones use WM for smart phones which differs form the PPC version by its shell (no touch screen) and tougher security.

5. Win CE most definitely exists, in fact Windows Mobile 5 is a derivative of CE 5 designed for PPC devices. There are other devices like nav consoles for cars that use win CE in either pure or custom tailored form.

Good luck with your projects! 8)
