Camera has definately improved in low light mode the picture still come up very good.. night mode also works very well.. overall nearly as good as nokia phones now :)

The bluetooth connections seems to be better also

The phone pad now donot delay when you have short tones enabled.

and so far i have not have any problems with this rom except that getting used to the new today page.

Damn good catch, mate! The camera clicks, and the photo's taken, so I don't have to wait five seconds more! The picture quality is pretty similar, but good enough for me. The unit's faster, and the new functions are great. The best is the BT and WiFi controls on the today page! Finally! (OK, I've only had the thing for a couple of weeks, but I really missed that.) Most of my annoyances are totally gone, except for two: Why is WiFi off after a reset? Every other unit I've had so far, has it turned on by default. And it still turns on when it gets an SMS, if there's not some setting that I haven't yet found that stops it from doing that. Still, this unit is now very close to perfect!

Which seetings are you using? Are you saving the photo in device memory?
For me, the 5 seconds lag is still there - taking photos at 1600x1200 and saving them to mini-SD.
Also, did anybody notice the funny "plah plah" sound after turning the volume off?

it took long time for me to save a 2MP JPG to the MINI-SD...

but! if you will format your card, the speed will improve immediatly...

It's not you, it's the WiFi. If you don't turn it off with the new, shining wireless toggle app, it will stay connected, so the unit doesn't really sleep at all. Try to ping your Atom (if you have a static IP) when it's "suspended", and you'll get answers.

I am using 4smartphone.net (exchange server) and the push email is now working. That was the main reason for my upgrading.

Is it possible to make voicedial function available through bluetooth? When I press a button on my jabra BT800, Atom launches phone module and does nothing else. Could there be a registry tweak to make it launch sddial.exe while opening audio channel to/from bt headset?

There is nothing you have to do to activate push email. When you sync with an exchange server (with service pack 2) it automatically recognizes that you have the capable software and automatically set its to sync as items arrive.

I still use my sp5m sometimes which doesn't have this ability, and I have to schedule it to poll the server by time. (the sms trigger dosen't seem to work.)

Love the Atom, and the new ROM has made my day.

I also use the blackberry 8700, Now I can retire it for good.

BTW... it usually takes about 20 seconds to receive a new email. I guess activesync has a little overhead.

I recently got my atom (my first pocket pc phone), really happy with it thus far.

I just installed the above ROM, certainly has improved the camera's low light and overall performance as mentioned above and the wireless manager is great. Couple of questions though:

1) Does anyone know if this is the final release, or is still alpha/beta?

2) When updating the ROM you loose a lot of info. I did a backup, but its a real mission manually trying to retrieve all of my sms's / installed programs etc... Is there anyway to prevent this when updating in future or any streamlined method of easily retrieving all of this info after an upgrade?

3) Any idea when o2 will be launching this new ROM?

2. You alwas have to install programs again, think of it as re-installing Windows on a desktop computer. What you can save is the info that is synced to Active Sync, which is E-mail, contacts, appointments and a few other things. I have never been able to save SMS, but then I haven't tried either. If something's important I copy it to another program, like notes.

Unfortunately recoding video is still as bad as it was...it records at 4-5 frames per second, I can’t see any point in using Atom to record video’s with that sort of quality. My Jam was way better. I had hoped the new ROM would have improved this but it hasn't! :cry:

Who knows? Only time will tell. To me setting up the PPC takes an hour or less, I have all the necessary programs as CAB-files on my Mini SD card, and I have all my documents there as well. Of course if I could make a cabfile with settings like name, WiFi, country and so on it would be even faster (probably a lot faster actually)... But you'll just have to wait until O2 releases this or another ROM version.

In fact, neither the SIM nor the USIM french orange cards work properly with the Atom.
Any other card will work without any problem.

It is not a problem coming from the (U)SIM cards themselves, given the fact that they work perfectly on roaming (in other countries).

Currently living in France, I have called Orange's technical support, and all I can say is that they don't know anything about a possible solution (they suggest all the Atoms are deffective while it works ok with any other operator!).

The new official ROM is just a part of the leaked one. It lacks some of the functionality and fixes, like the wireless app.

Strange: I got the same problem, but it work well now depending of the place...I just think it's a question of sensibility of GPRS antenna....

For instance, from my office I have GPRS issue with my Qtek 9100 but not with my atom. However, fropm other place, I have a perfect edge and Gprs signal on my atom....

Orange, of course, know nothing about atom

Anyway, I have bought a vodaphone line and with a n adpatator use the two sims together switching from one to other when needed....

I used the new rom (20060217...) and it is really much nicer than the 20060123...veriosn my O2 was shipped with.

My O2 still hangs once in a while and I have to reset it and the camera is still damn slow. 10 secs to load and 3 secs to take a photo on the internal memory.

Active Sync is also too active. I really wish it synced less often. I use my USB port to charge my Atom and it keeps syncing.

BTW are there other tips and threads on this forum about the Atom. I am a XDA Newbie and tried searching to no avail.

i hate the way activesync behaves! i really dont understand why they had to change it from the version 3.8 when 4.1 lacks so many fundamental functions such as manual syncing!and whats more, it is so damn slow!is it just me or do you guys feel it too?

you should check you gprs settings. if you have CHAP try changing to PAP. I had this issue generaly connecting to internet and by doing that I solved the problem.

Ive got the Atom, have a constant humming static sound from the main speaker every time its switched on. The moment the power off is pressed the sound disappears. Its very slight but when u answer calls u can hear it clear, very annoying. I wonder if anyone else has the same problem

Yes, I've had that on every PDA I have had. The volume and pitch varies, but it's almost always there. One some units, like my Blue Angel, before I got it fixed, it's audible across the room. Normally you'll have to put your ear up to the screen to hear anything.

Is it worth upgrading from the Hotfixed Official Updated 20060123 ROM to the leaked 20060217 ROM. I understand its the first Atoms with the 20060105 ROM that were very buggy. Ive got my Atom last week with the 123 ROM, upgraded it as per the website with the Hotfix and Camera Patch. Works OK but for the static from the speaker. 3. The switching of band doesnt help my device, noise is still present, as

I have O2 XDA Atom in my own allready 2 weeks. I purchase it when i was in
Singapore.
Now I came back in Moscow, and dont going visiting Singapore in near future
again.

I having noted that:
I hear strange NOISE like UltraSound only when screen is on. If screen is
off, there is no strange noise present.
This Noise does not depend on Radio Module work (Even if Flight mode is on
- Noise is present)

Please, could you give some recomendation to local, noneO2 support center,
how it could be fixed, if problem in Hardware field.
Because its impossible to bring device back in Singapore.

Don't use this ROM 20060217B1WWE with Radio Version R060221N_MN1ARC_RS00045. This rom has many trouble. I suggest you use a new rom 20060414B1WWE-RS00047. It's perfect (99.99999999%).
With new rom, the camera is very okey. Loading only 2 second. You don't need a camera hotfix patch. I had been used tihs ron (20060414B1WWE-RS00047). This rom is wonderfull rom then the previous. So I like my atom with this rom "test only not for sale". This new rom picture (20060414B1WWE47) ":

I'm in Australia and have just purchased a new O2 XDA Atom :rom 20060123B1WWE radio 43
I too have this dredded high pitch squeel thru the ear speaker (in handset).

Does the new firmware (rom update) fix this? I'm still waiting for my IME number to pass through the System so i can update the rom via the O2 update service. (says 7 days after purchase)
I'm not sure if i should just demand a replacement unit or wait and get the rom update, I had a listen to someone elses Atom today and his had the same high pitched noise. He didn't notice it untill I pointed it out to him? He had an older rom version than mine.

Anyway this thing is 2 days old and I'm not sure what i should do?

The place of purchase said it will take 2 weeks to send it off for repair? I said It is brand new, you can get a new one in and put a battery in it, and listen for the noise, if it doesn't have the noise than i'll be in to swap it over.
That didn't go down real well, So on Tuesday I'll talk to the manager!

If the rom update fixes it, then i don't have to yell at anyone :D

Does the new firmware (rom update) fix this? I'm still waiting for my IME number to pass through the System so i can update the rom via the O2 update service. (says 7 days after purchase)
I'm not sure if i should just demand a replacement unit or wait and get the rom update, I had a listen to someone elses Atom today and his had the same high pitched noise. He didn't notice it untill I pointed it out to him? He had an older rom version than mine.

Anyway this thing is 2 days old and I'm not sure what i should do?

The place of purchase said it will take 2 weeks to send it off for repair? I said It is brand new, you can get a new one in and put a battery in it, and listen for the noise, if it doesn't have the noise than i'll be in to swap it over.
That didn't go down real well, So on Tuesday I'll talk to the manager!

If the rom update fixes it, then i don't have to yell at anyone :D

Could anyone give me some answers please?

and if somebody could get the rom update for me (link it somewhere so i can download it) so i don't have to wait 7 days to know weather to practise yelling or not!

New rom SWEEEET! much faster almost equal to my rx3715
very much an improvement.

The noise is still there though :cry: Mightyox if you can keep me posted WTF they do? But it sounds like a Hardware fault! So I just might have a chat with the manager of Telechoice :D He was a help to get the Atom

Camera is still average but better. My K750i is pretty much the best Phone camera I've seen.

Hi Jetgsr,

Its a hardware fault for sure, they said they were waiting for a LCD part.
They had just replaced it and now giving it a good test. Hopefully I should get it by the end of the week.

It looks to me to be a earth loop back from the LCD screen to the ear speaker, Being almost solid state these days My guess would be YES the screen would need replacing. (I was a chip level tech in a previous life)

i been hanging to update my rom but i cant even log into the seeo2 site to download the official one, i get the error "404 Not Found".

i tried the rom off the FTP but i get "Error Country ID or Device ID"

Make sure you set your region correctly on your Atom or do an upgrade without the Sim installed thats what i did .. worked fine


Tell me does your atom have a high pitched squeel in the ear speaker on the phone?

O back to the problem of my phone I spoke to the shop they have ordered a new atom for me (only 17 instock) and we are also going to send mine away. So i will either get a new one soon or mine repaired in who know how long? the good thing is i will get one back working!

JETGSR - All is good mate, put the atom in bootloader mode and then ran the update, worked sweet :D - btw i used the one off the ftp, cant seem to log into the seeo2 site from here :x i can from work though..? Wat the

when im on calls i cannot hear any high pitched sounds at all.. all i hear is a bit of interferance and the other person im talking too hehe :lol:

mightox you'd better keep me posted on this one! Cos if mine screws up after it gets fixed ... When it gets back! I will be handing it back to the place of purchase and getting the contract canceled. I only had it for 3 days and had the fault from the minute i got it home.

I'm definatly not going to wait for it to be repaired again.

O2 specify it is impossible to upgrade my Atom to an English ROM.

How the Chinese sellers do it ?

homer285 you will be with out your unit for at least 1 month and then it is a gamble if the fault doesn't return!

If your unit is brand new take it back a get a replacement!! check it in the store! you don't need a sim installed just turn it on and listen!

if your lucky and you get a good one than you have to upgrade the firmware so it can actually be used as a PDA Phone once you have done all that I think you'll have a winner! :wink:

MightyOX hows yours going? I told them if mine goes faulty when i get it back I want a new one straight away!! Or i have a chat with the ACCC and fair trading, I have paid a months rental on a plan with that phone and still do not have a phone.

I have a huge stick and i'm waiting to use it!

He claims he has rang the service centre and they keep telling him it isn't ready, so he has given up ringing them. (i don't know the last time he rang them)

How can they (dare they) release a product knowingly with this problem, I have read so many other forums with Atom users posting same problem from day one. O2 dont want to know or pretend they dont know, I sent O2 Asia a detailed email about the problem and there reply was all about rom versions and types of memory cards, basically they played dumb and I think they either havent tested the devices before they distributed them or they have just passed the buck. Pissed off too!

I found out today, They (the service company) haven't even looked at my phone! it was missing the power supply so they wouldn't even look at it.
They tried to ring Telechoice 3 weeks ago didn't get thru so they just put it aside. Only after hounding the store for 6 weeks do i find this out.

How absolutly bloody pathetic is that! I can't believe that there has been nothing done. Naturally i screamed blue murder, told them they can shove the phone up their arse, and shove the contract too, "But you are under contract" he says ... screw the contract ...I'll cancel my 2 business phones 2 mobile phones and my home phone and broadband connection.
I get contacted 3 times a week by ppl wanting my telco business.

Damb I'm wild! So i droped the psu into the store and walked out!

So we'll see what the hell will happen now!

I tell you what i would never recommend anyone to get an atom for the sheer chance it may require a visit to the service department.

In fact its the only service centre that can fix O2 products under warranty in Australia I cant understand why a company like O2 doesnt have service and repair centres in all states like Nokia. Mine is there too and I finally got an email from them today, apparently they are so back logged with work it could be sometime until the phone is repaired. jetgsr, what do you mean they wanted your PSU? you mean charger or not?. Why on earth would they want your charger, unless perhaps the shipped chargers are the cause of this problem....Maybe the voltage or amps from the transformer are incorrect causing problems.

no it had the problem before the phone even saw the charger and yes PSU (Power Supply Unit) sorry Charger! is what i ment.

I have no idea what drugs they are on.. the only thing i can think of is they want to replace the unit! but why not just remove the Charger from the new one and put it with the old one? Damb I repaired computers (chip level) for 9 years, And never did stuff like that, I think it just requires common sence. The thing is i told the store it wasn't in the box and that i had forgot it. She said no look thats ok, they may just replace the unit and send all the old stuff back. Well it was new 3 days earlier so I wasn't worried. jetgsr, I know how you feel!!
Whilst i was lucky that I didn't get the batch with the bad LCD, i am now on my 3rd device. I purchased 2 Atom's, first one had a dodgy touch screen where it would register the input about 5mm above where you pressed. That unit is still with MPS (the service centre for o2) and has been for a month.
The 2nd unit LCD was busted out of the box. The top half of the screen was completely white. I went mental at our account manager with Optus and demanded I get an immediate replacement as this was 2 weeks after my 1st unit was sent away with no word on when I would have that one back.
3rd unit is working well, and still waiting for a replacement for the 1st one i sent away which was 5 weeks ago now!

Interesting about the charger too... I have had 2 phones (well, 3 now..) go to MPS and I have never sent a charger. In fact, last time I sent a stylus and SD card blank (from a magician) and i got an email and letter back from them saying please don't send us anything other than the handset in future!!

I just can't believe that an organization like O2 can be so unprofessional in the way it handles it's servicing, Now O2 chooses who it wants to service it's equipment! They really need to fix this as They just might go out of business here in Australia. as People like you and me will be telling everyone we know don't buy an O2, as the after sales service doesn't exist!

And Optus should remove the O2 from it's business plans so they get no flak from the customers (like me) because I'm seriously thinking about dropping all my ties with them if they can't fix it in the next couple of days.

Telstra, Primus, and 3 have all contacted me over the last 2 weeks I bet if i say to them "fix this contract shit up with Optus and you will have all my business" I bet it would only take 10 mins and I would have 2 new mobile phones and 3 new landlines all set up and running with new service providers.

All because of one phone problem that could of been fixed with a couple of phone calls.

Guess what... I bought my ATOM off the Ebay (USA) brought in all the way to Moscow (Russia), read your posts then listened to the speaker and there it is - HISSING NOISE!!! :D

Surely there is no service for Atom in Russia, so I guess I will have to face it till the end or ship it to the seller for a replacement, that has a risk to be returned with white LCD or fault touchpanel :))

I guess the only option is to enjoy the Atom :)

I guess originally it was thought the latest rom could either fix or was the cause of the problem. Perhaps Mods could move these posts to a new thread. I wouldn't call it long winded complaining the fact is more than some of us have issues with our Atoms and its difficult to get a response even from manufacturer, obviously yours doesnt have this problem otherwise you'd probably be complaining too.

It is nice and fast very good improvement but will not fix the high pitched noise in the ear speaker and it will NOT get you any better service from your service agent when your O2 fails.
