My Today Screen

Is there a way to make my Today screen look like my desktop? I would prefer the "Start" appear on the bottom left instead of the top left. I would also like a taskbar on the bottom of the screen, which would go well with the bottom-left Start button. Then the rest of the screen will have icons for everything I need. Together this would look similar to my PC desktop, which I would feel more comfortable using. Any help is appreciated!
I actually saw a program like that today while I was browsing a site. It makes the screen look exactly like XP but it uses an insane amount of memory (about 8 mb, which is a lot for our Wizards). So, it's really not feasible for this phone :(

Will using 8MB make the 8125 run slower? I run almost all of my programs from memory card, so I have more than enough room to install 8MB to main memory. Unless of course it would make it run slower, then I likely wouldnt want it.

Running a program of that size will use a lot of device memory up. Even though you are running it from the card it still needs to be pushed into the device memory as it is run I think. It will suck the life out of the device, I've had mine down to less than 1Mb before even though I store most programs on my 1Gb storage card.

Wisbar is best installed on main memory rather on the storage card - that is why you got that error.

Im trying to customize my Today screen to my liking, but the icons look like garbage when the size is increased. Anyone know a place to get, or how to make some good QVGA icons?

Also, which is generally considered a better program, cLaunch or iLauncher? I just installed cLaunch and it seems ok but I see alot of Today screens with iLauncher. cLaunch is free and iLauncher isnt but if its worth it, I will pay.

Is there any chance you could post your theme/skin up for others to use?

I love the look of it, and have seen the bits and pieces of OSX skins/themes (Icons, backgrounds, etc.), but no full pre-made themes, and the process of building one is infuriatingly complex (to me, anyway) and layman's beginner's guides seems to be either sparse or non-existant.

If you could post it, or point me towards a pre-made one that'll give me that look, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Ummm -- Yeah. . . probably a WHOLE lot more resources than the phone could handle.

I'd say it would be REALLY bogged down just changing screens, let alone actually running a program.

Like the looks of it, though..... :) .....Especially the Windows Vista theme!! It's the one I'm currently using.

These screenshots were taken late at night after being up and running all day(so the Program Memory was showing at 15MB), but upon a soft reset, I normally have around 18MB Program Memory and just under 13MB Storage Memory.

I run iLauncher, Pocket Breeze and Pocket Weather from the storage card. BattMemTime and PsShutXP are installed on the phone itself.

Hi - no i didn't :cry: the icon seems to be in a dll and not hackable. Searched on other forums to no avail. 1 answer is to put a lighter object in the top right of the background or change the background to a lighter one.

It's a battery indicator that comes with SPB Pocket Plus. I don't know if you've got that program installed? Disable the battery indicator by goint to start > settings > today > items > Pocket Plus > options > Battery

or something like that. my wizard is in repairs so i can't check at the moment.

I'm very happy with this. The other programs I frequently use are on the start menu, and I have voicetags for frequently called numbers and a couple of programs.

BTW: a different twist on your argument might be, and this is what I stand by: if we spent more time arguing about today screens, hopefully we'd have less time to argue about who's oil is worth more, or who's prisoners need to be released. So frankly, lets focus on what really matters - progressing society through technological development, rather then increasingly technological destruction. Magnify that to a global view, and everyone would be full, healthy and happy. And be using my today screens!

You can try looking for Orange Wizard (whatever it is called) Ext ROM.

I would suggest that you backup your phone, hardreset it, and install the Orange Ext ROM. If the stuff you want is inside, you can then try to trial and error to see which CAB (within the Ext ROM) is responsible for the stuff you want. .. er.. get what I mean/?

Sorry my mistake, that's from the Vista Portable Edition. I have three different versions of the vista skins. I liked that one the best. Nicer connectivity icons, and 0 bugs.

I've been reading on this thread and a couple of other threads that some users like a nice, simple Today Screen in order to view their plugins/icons, and what-have-u. Ive been working on three such screens today -- EXTENDED THEMES -- for those of you who have removed the system tray at the bottom of the screen, as I have. While they're not pure, simple color, they're not overly "busy", either. The previews are being posted without any of my Today Screen plugins running so you can get a better view of them. I've been looking for an answer for this, do you get to make the spb wmp plugin play songs that are only on your playlist? If so, how?

The plug in that is the second one down just below the date is what I'm after.

I cannot find that plug in anymore, someonw had it written I KNOW they did. Please someone share, it annoys me I cannot find this thing through searching...And I can't get it to let me type the thing manually into my registry...I suck at life sometimes.

By just adding following keys to the registry will get you a nice 'wireless' today item that show Network name/status, WiFi name/status as well as Bluetooth status. Confirmed to work on AKU2 ROMs

it's not as great looking but this one works with smart dialer. it's just a cab install and after which the phone will do a soft reset.

bear in mind if you have the skin off hack in the reg then this won't work. i don't remember the exact reg key but it's in the tmo new rom thread on this forum....

thanks for the link i already had the eten skin applied and now there seems to be a small bug the text from the buttons there and so is the regular button text and the buttons in landscape mode dont seem to match the other buttons any idea on a fix?

I thought I saw somewhere a today plug in that had a small note-pad area. I got the idea that maybe it allowed you scratch down a quick note and save it for later. Am I crazy or does something like this exist?

I must have missed this post my first few times reading through it -- but, YES!! There IS such an app, because I'm using it.

It's called Touch Notes and you can download it from http://touch-notes.en.softonic.com/ie/51673 It's just like carrying around a pad of Post-It-Notes -- only they don't get lost and/or crumpled up in your pocket or wallet.

It's GREAT for those quick reminders you need to occasionally jot down. :D Here's some screenshots --

I am Not very choosy about the Kind of Today Screen Except that I normally Keep Images which Inspire me of My favourite OS ie. the Windows XP.
Similarly Though I would try all the apps once in a while, my favourites are the ones which take Minimum Memory (performance I mean) Space is Not a problem coz. I have hardly Put any Movie / Music on My 1 gb Sd card.

Under Normal Circumstances, or when I am in Need of Performance, I just have Wisbar and I-launcher (O2plus running in the Today)

On the other hand when I just want to fool around....There is Not much you can do with merely 200MHZ (wish it was at least 500) I would Turn on the Wisbar advanced desktop.

I have designed around 5-6 pages of this (all simple, uncluttered, and user friendly with just Basic apps like Phone, Calender, (agenda) ,calculator, Notes, etc on each page neatly distributed, Page wise;

Plus a page for Control panel Meters Like Memory , Battery and Storage Space.

Clicking on the Agenda takes you to the <AGENDA PAGE>
Clicking On Phone Takes you to the <PHONE OPTIONS> (here I have speed dials, Contacts and Voice Dialling)

Clicking on the Media Player Icon Simply takes me to the Next page.All pages have a Media Player Icon for Moving to the Next Page and a <My computer Icon> which Points to the Above Home Page.

There are a few Empty Pages too where I might put any TODAY PLUGIN from Time to Time......

VJbasehue is a little app. that makes it truly easy to change the hue of the top and bottom bars (mine are darkgrey). But not just this, it also changes other systempopups.

That's probably Wisbar advanced (http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products.php?prod=WisBar+Advance) (which is kind of like Window Blinds but for PPC) which allows you to reskin your desktop.

My biggest question was normally about the today plugins they were running. I think the one I was interested in was O2 plus.

Sadly, most of this info I get from conversations on IRC.

There's several screenshot utilities out there. I know I've even seen the download files to a couple of different ones on these forums. But it would take me awhile to find them right now.

I use Pocket Snapit for screenshots directly on my phone. It's a freeware app that I found at http://www.pocketmatrix.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21216&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=&sid=6256acb66a35d99ac57a1b760b9a16ce.

For screenshots that I take of my screen while conected to my computer, I use Vito Screen Capture to save it directly to my desktop's My Pictures folder that I found at http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/screencapture.html

I've attached the file for PocketSnapit, since it's freeward -- not sure I should do the same for the Vito Screen Capture since I bought that one.

Hi..Sorry but Wisbar Desktop skins have to be configured on our own phones by ourselves. There is no such thing as a skin file here....

ive just installed and have been playing about with wad for a couple of hours, im glad i found it quite easy to pick up. im pleased with my results. , tho im not finished. the two small grey buttons on the fake taskbar open sidebars, and the red one shuts down. the phone icon sends me to my regular today screen, with essential plug ins (phone alarm, picture dialler etc) didnt get caps of that tho. the last shot is my login screen.

You see guys, this is my question. I have Wisbar Advance, but not Wisbar Advance Desktop. Do I need Wisbar Advance Desktop to be able to do this? That is a great today screen Jamiewalshe.

Hi..Sorry but Wisbar Desktop skins have to be configured on our own phones by ourselves. There is no such thing as a skin file here....

On the desktop, hold the stylus down until the menu opens and select "New / Dock".

- Under "Background" tap on the "..." to go to a folder with a graphic which is much smaller than your desktop. (There's a blue graphic that's about 1/4 the size of a vga desktop in the Expea set referred to below. Or, you can create you own graphic. If you do this, you'll have to save it in an acceptable format - it's .png for Expea.)

- If you choose a relatively dark graphic for your dock, you'll probably want to reduce it's opacity to 20% - 50% so you can see the icons you put on it.

- In the "Dock to Edge" setting, select left, right, bottom, or none. None, allows you to hold down the stylus on it and drag it where you want it. The other settings are fixed.

- Docks serve as a places to put things - like app launching icons, or icons that show your pda's settings. See below - they can be set up to act like windows on your PC.

- You can put "Buttons" on your desktop that will toggle a designated dock on and off. So, docks create windows on your ppc, like the windows on your PC.

- To have a dock behave like a window: When you create a dock, you'll see that it's a assigned a Dock#. Select New / Button. In the "Action" drop down, select "Toggle Dock". In the "Control" drop down, select the Dock: #.


- Hold the stylus down on the dock and select "New" and then Shortcut, Button, Meter, or Text Object.

- For instance, on one of my docks, I have selected Shortcut x no of times, to create a dock which launches my x no of most used apps.

- In the Shortcut dialog, "Path to Executable" is often \Windows, because most of the app launching *.exe's are in there. You'll probably notice them by their icon, as easily as by their name.

- Hightlight the app you want and click the ok button to accept. Then you can either select or uncheck "Use Default Icon". I check "Use Small Icon" so more stuff can fit on a dock. Or, you can uncheck, "Use Default Icon" and in the Path to Image choose an icon you like. I usually also go to "Text Settings", and uncheck "Display the Shortcut's Text" - because the text takes up too much space.

You can find a nice set of Expea icons and a today skin at the url below to use in place of some of the default icons. It's the Expea2 theme suite. The zip files with the icons in them are at the end of the icon / theme picture set.

Someone more experienced with WAD can add to / correct this: You have to have default.skin and Expea2_WA2.skin (the one I'm using) in the \Themes\Desktop\Default folder. But, you can store the icons on your storage card to save space.

I've had my Wizard for 5 months now. I thought after 3 months I had it set up the way I wanted it. But, I keep looking at this thread finding things other people are using and I start DROOLING!! :D

Jeasbe: thanks for answering that for me and explaining the docks. i could post up every file you'd need, but most of it is for wad is in the vista wad skin file that jeasbe has already posted. thanks for the icons, ive been after some more adpt ones!

i cant see a way of having the ppc start up from a virtual page (namely my login screen - which at the moment is just for looks, although psshutxp runs through the button and the login sends me to the home page, so its all functioning) does anyone know? looking at it i probably should have started off with the login page as my main page (adn i may do this if there is no other option.

also when i start up and get to my today screen i find all my docks and windows are open. i have to close everything. its not hugely inconvienient, but a little annoying. does anyone know a way round this?

I'll try to answer both things. Mebbe they work mebbe not.....
I am learning a lot of things from here...
First of all the WAD has to be in \windows\startup folder so that It can load when PPC loads. Of course u must have tried that!

Secondly every dock has a property.

In that u have to enable the option the Dock has to Be Invisible by Default.Means U have to UNCHECK <VISIBLE BY DEFAULT> and Also Check ON <CLOSE WHEN SUB ITEM IS CLOSED>That way the docks shall be closed when ur WAD loads.

One thing I missed.
Normally the FIRST VIRTUAL PAGE which u make becomes the home page.
For this the Login Screen page has to be made First of all......(then it shall become the Login or the home page.
Clicking on LOGIN shall take u to other pages.
and because ur Docks are supposed to start minimised (in properties) all the pages shall be neater.

But then I guess when u have made such a great Desktop, u might have tried all this.

One major thing I missed about WAD (desktop)
I had to uninstall it every time, When I did not require it.

Because everytime I loaded Wisbar Advanced 2, the WA Desktop would start too and I was more comfortable with the conventional Today Screen.
It did not show in the Task manager , hence could not be disabled.

Now that I have installed http://www.oxios.com/memory Thanx to Juicy J
I can simply shut down WA Desktop while the Wisbar Advanced still runs..

just wanted to share.....

thanks for that jeasbe - when i created it i made sure everything was not visable by default and always closes when sub item is closed

wad runs when my ppc is started up, theres no problem with that.
when i created the first page, i didnt think to make a login page, and when i decided to, it was one of the last things i did. i was hoping they'd be a quick way of changing the default home, or just an option to have a virtual page as the default page. guess there isnt, so ill probably have to re do it.

login page comes up, hitting login sends you to the main page.
hitting the button underneath opens up psshutxp, which will give you the option to turn off, soft reset or turn off backlight. its skinned in the black vista style. :P

It DEFINITELY is a "memory hog". I did some testing on my own phone to see how much memory each of my Today plugins use. This is what I found:

Pocket Weather - 185kb
Spb Time -- 320kb
Pocket Breeze (no custom tabs added) -- 480kb
iLauncher -- 850kb
PhotoDialer PlugIn -- 960kb
WAD -- 1mb
PB w/ custom tabs for iLauncher, Pocket Weather and Spb Time -- 1.2mb (saves about 100kb over running all 4 as stand-alone plugins)
WA2 -- 2.5mb

I like the sleek look that WA2 gives the Today screen and run it every day. However, as much as I like being able to cusomize the look using WAD with different pages, I reserve it for "occasional use", such as special events, Holidays, etc.. When I'm running my GPS mapping software, I disable ALL of the above to free up system resources for that.

I have stopped using wa2 because memory/resource hungry.

I have today agenda, phone profiles, dktoday, claunch, batti, metrix memory meter, bible verse of the day plugins and still 26.2mb program memory free and a zippy device!

At present I have been alternating between O2Plus Calender or Calender+

The Problem with O2 Plus calender is that it also displays the PAST Appointments of the day and that too in a dull grey colour which makes it an eyesore on All the great Today Screens.
Nothing Beats the Default White or Black here ( I personally Feel)


Same goes for Apps plugin
I have been using I launcher (coz. It has an option of changing the Icons)/ or O2 Plus shortcuts (I guess thats lighter than Ilauncher)

The only problem I am facing Now is that In My O2 XDA2, SPB Plus is working But I dunno why It says that the SOFTWARE IS NOT SUPPORTED by the WIZARD)

Can anyone help on this?
Is there a seperate version for SPB for WM 5 ??

Use reshacker http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ on the todayagenda dll - works with wince as well. Find the icon you want to use and change it for the old one on the dll.

I found this cool theme on the Sompy site - I have made it landscape compatible and with WM5 color keys. It can be also used with an extended today screen like mine (no soft key bar)

For those that like the waterxp theme - a welcome screen replacement in cab format.

Copy to device via activesync and click on cab thru file explorer on the device. To get standard windows welcome screen back just uninstall cab.

Phonealarm will give you status icons as to how many sms,emails you have on the today screen. I use voice commands for the alarms with it, so it also talks to me and tells me when they arrive. You can make the voice alarms free as wavs at : http://public.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php

Then they sound just like MS voice command does if you have that installed too.

the window is a plain dock, thats activated by an icon on the desktop. the icons inside run various programs/folders. the red cross button (unfortunatly not a good fit, so the dock has been changed to one that a seamless cross could be put on) closes the dock.

looking at those screens again makes me cring. ill get some new pics up later today, it looks a lot lot nicer now!!

the bar is again a dock, but fixed. the close icon loads up psshutxp as ive explained earlier. again ill put more pics up later. the two little circular buttons next to it control the sidebars.

im not using anything else than WAD and WA2

Dug, thats Wisbar Desktop, and plugin of Wisbar Advance. Do search on google for Wisbar, it'll take you to the page. There's a forum with tons of skin for the desktop

the dock is a background image that you use, have a look about the internet for wad dock images, specifically on the lakeridge forums.

set whatever you want as the dock background when making a new dock. my one came preset looking exactly like that (bar my icons inside it), but i wanted to get the close/minimise functions to work.

i used photoshop to copy them out of that existing image, as individual images, and just used them as buttons in my dock, placing them over the top of the existing ones to do the appropriate job. they go over the original cross and minimise images easily, and you cant tell they're there. the buttons both pretty much do the same thing, but i like having them there.

vista style wa2 skin (for taskbars) is available from the lakeridge forums, as has been said. mine is the beta 2 version.

as for wad, you have to build it up yourself. i can stick my background and some of the icons up tho, but its just as easy to hunt round and look for nicer ones!!

Hi Friends, i've got an I-mate K-Jam (aka Wizard). I tried many times to install Contact-ing by Birdsoft but it never installed properly - it doesn't display any change in the device, no new menù, no new voice in today screen or today configuration, nothing!

Can somebody help me to solve this problem? Otherwise, is there a similar free software i can try?

Wisbar Advance is great but i notice a performance drop on my 8125 from it :? . Even after starting up WA, i still have about 10MB of memory still free but it still lags a lil bit when starting up and running programs.

How is the performance on everyone else's devices while running WA??
Also, is it better to have iLauncher or SPB Pocket Plus for the use of tabs on my device (performance wise)?

I haven't got a screenshot of my Wizard but I wanted to recommend one Today screen plugin that I use and find especially efficient: Tasks+.

Its a replacement for the stock Tasks plugin that actually lists your tasks (with start/due date if desired). Its tiny so I prefer it to the added clutter and overhead that some of the tabbed today / PIM plugins require.

You could try actually purchasing the programs. . .

Anyway, I finally got around to takin' some screenies. . .

I pretty much took different things I liked from different places and incorporated it all into this. Usin' WAD and WA2, as well as an Eten dialer. Took me a while to find all the right pieces, but I'd say it was worth it. The Vista skin is the item I used the most, made by somebody pretty talented. If you like any of it, I suggest checkin' out the lakeridge forums.

Usin' a T-Mobile MDA, overclocked with Battery Status to 247, with the 3.2 aku that's in the Wizard Upgrading section of the forum.

I have searched all over these forums to find a plugin I'm using, but to no avail. I even performed a Google Search.

DANG IT!! It's got to be here SOMEWHERE!!!

The name of it is TodayEmpty. It's a plugin that allows you to set custom spacing in pixels between your other today plugins in order to see more of your screen.

I'm currently using it on my Wizard and had it on my computer -- until it crashed and I had to reinstall Windows. Hadn't gotten around to backing up the particular file folder I had it in, and it's the only app left I need to find.

okay guys i'm new to all this. i want to change my today screen but i don't want a lot of shit all over it because i like to see my wallpapers. where do you save all the themes to? do you save it to the phone somewhere or to your mem card? i have a g4 rom that's not unlocked but i have the total commander installed on it.

I have all my themes (about 1100) saved to my storage card in a folder called "themes". At the beginning of every week, I'll copy and paste the ones I want to use that week to the root of the card so they're available to choose from in Settings > Personal > Today.
