this explanation is basically for the xda2 with wm5. the device has 128mb of ram which is very fast but looses all data when power is gone. all programs are running in ram (this is not only for xda2 but for all ppc devices even wm5 devices). since 128mb of ram is normally much more than programs need you can use a ram-disk driver which turns a certain amount of ram into a drive where you can store your data like on a hard disk or usb-stick or whatever media. the size of the ram-disk decreases your available ram for running programs i.e.:
128mb total ram available
32mb ram-disk equals in 128 minus 32 = 96mb available ram for running programs.
i hope this helps you to get an understanding of the different wm5 rom-version for xda2.

ramdisk act as a harddisk in a computer apart it would loose all data if all power was removed from it
ram act as ram in a pc programs use it for temp storage it's released when programs close

i have no idea and i do not know what you mean by "installing ramdisk 64". does it mean you only have installed a cab-file containing driver and registry-settings for a 64mb ramdisk or do you flashed a complete rom with 64mb ramdisk?

just for another clarification: when you flash this rom with 64mb ramdisk and restart your device, what is then the exact name of your ramdisk? is it "Storage" or "RamDisk" or "ExtROM"? this info helps solving your problem.

hello hys_y2k,
for getting back your extended rom you have to use an extended rom unlocker for your device. this is a cab-file to install. you can find it here. then after a soft reset your device should show you another "drive" called "ExtROM" or similar name. so at the moment your extended rom is not gone it is hidden only. if you own a himalaya (xda2, mda2, qtek 9090 etc) and like to use wm5 in the future not only for testing but as your standard operating system, i suggest to reformat the disk-on-chip by a special tool (if you do not have it done already). you can found it here at xda-developers or at buzzdev.net. this tool merges your main memory with the extended rom. the result: you have no longer an extended rom but you now have more main memory which is essential for reasonable using himalaya under wm5.

There is not enough space for those cabs/ExtROM. You need to store it on a different place. Anyway how many of the default cabs are you using? I and not only I,are using absolutely nothing from those.

OK for theory by TomasNM but...practice is different.
I used Ramdisk tools and i had a partition called Ramdisk power depending (HR reset cleared it).
But when I reflashed with TofClock 2.00aWWE64 i had a patition called Flash Disk (not Ramdisk) ant it was NOT power depending: after HR I had the file stored in Flash disk integer.
I'm very happy of this but how this can be possible?

It's not so as you have described. The RAMdisk as a virtual drive is in a fact a part of RAM. That means:1.it is power-dependent(without power you will lose all data). 2.is untouched by hard reset. Hard reset in WM5! makes 2 things(cleans registry hive and formats storage). This format storage procedure formats only! the DOC. The RAM isn't affected and therefore the data remains untouched. But not all data. Only that data will be wiped out by soft(and therefore also by hard) reset,that are in program memory(RAM block addressed in ROM image). If the addresses and sizes described in ROM image and in registry are correct,the RAMdisk will keep all its data after reset,because is off the DOC formatting and wiping data from RAM by reset. This is the problem,which you had-Bad addressing and all data was wiped out. And the name of the folder "Flash disk"(before it was "RAMdisk" or "Storage") is only a string value in registry and you can change that,as you want. Yes here is a mistake made by TofClock: The Flash memory type is FlashROM,that is power independent(as a Storage Card-keeps its data without battery). This virtual drive is made from RAM,that is power-dependent! Thereforore I am using everytime the name RAMdisk,which is closest to its properties. Yes it seems to be independent,but don't forget for backup battery,which keeps the data in RAMdisk alive for a while when is main battery empty/removed! You can try to put some file/s into this drive and remove main battery so long,until the backup battery will be empty. Then all your data will be lost. This is the power dependency,that I am talking about. Any confusions yet?

@TomasNM
Many thanks for the perfect explanation. It is everything clearest now. :wink:
