Hi!

I've got crack on my screen- and you wan't belive me, but nothing has happen! I haven't drop this PDA, nothing elese in the pocket, I haven't seat on that pocket etc.. Just opened AND..

Anyway, I've to fix this ASAP:)

What are my options? Propably it is not covered by warranty so it is pointless (imho) to speak to them.
Who can fix this? How much do I've to pay?
Or, what's the cheapest option now to buy new EXEC?
Any ideas? Or... maybe I can buy just screen and someone can repalce this?

Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Chris

Easy enought to swop yourself - screens are approx £130, but give the o2 helpline a call for a fitted quote to see what they offer as this will maintain warranty on the device.

Is it the LCD or digitiser itself that has broken? (Ink splodge or crack? )

Thanks for your quick reply!

Unfortunatly LCD (touch screen is still working).
Yes, I'll give them a call today.
£130 is NOT THAT MUCH to be honest.

That's the screen cost from Taipei after shipping and tax - o2's price is likely to be higher.

Thanks!

Yes, I know:) O2 will be around £185...
Why it is so expensive ? 30% just for the screen...

Is there any chance to fix this under warranity?

They are charging you to *fit* it as well. No chance under warranty methinks but maybe if you bought the insurance now and claimed in 6 - 8 weeks? ;-)

My Exec screen also cracked (round the back) It was in my pocket and certainly hadn't been dropped and the case was unmarked and the front of the screen was unmarked So I cant see that it had been knocked or crushed. They replaced it free of charge as a 'gesture of goodwill' - Having said that I have the o2 gold insurance so I wasnt going to pay anyway.

Sadly it took them over a month to get me a replacement, despite numerous calls and emails, so at the end of the contract I wont be going back to O2.

I wonder if this screen thing is in fact a manufacturing problem rather than user error. It might be worth saying that 'you've heard that other users have experienced cracked screens...'

A manufacturing fault and just being vulnerable to damage are not the same thing, sadly. They don't usually break unless you leave them in the cold / in your back pocket as you sit down / face open in your pocket with your keys etc etc. If the digitiser stops working on loads of units with no intervention - that's a manufacturing fault, but lots of people breaking the LCD's? might be easily done - but ultimatley their own fault either by carelessness or accident. My advice - buy a case!

My exec was in O2 for a repair for bloody 8 weeks !!! (it arrived today...).
I had pleased them, mail and phone-bomb them, threatened them to death and court, but they still have pissed on me from the high...
So, my conclusion > NO FING WAY that I`ll give my Exec to O2 again....

Not speaking about that 185 pounds they wanted BEFORE they repaired it (like second week they had it)...

8 weeks?
Paying 185 quid for repair and wait 8 weeks???
Wow, thanks for that post...

Anyway, thank you for all your replys- I've got one more question.. can some1 give an email address to Service dept please? I've tried yesterday to call them but line was busy :((

Thank you for your support!
Cheers!

I've also had this problem - the screen crack looks to me as though it's at the point which gets stressed the most when the screen is flipped around during opening. The warranty expressly excludes cracked LCDs. Which has to give you a clue...

My advice - if you ever buy one do it on a credit card with insurance which covers it. Mine is paying for the repair.

Hi Alec,

I've got this EXEC as a upgrade so they just charged my account (direct debit). Also, I've got just HSBC CC and there is no inssurance.
The other thing is- sales agent FORGOT to add this £5 insurance to my account!!! Also, he should change my tarif- which wasn't done :(
So I'm very upset with o2 sales agents :(
My next contract will be propably with T-MOBILE (I'm half German so... :P )

Cheers!

Richard,

I remeber agent's name - Nick. His extension number was 21SOMETHING AFIK :( Do they record every call? For haw long do they keep them?
Anyway, is too late...
Soo, i'm ready to pay this £185- but I'd like to mek sure that this screen fill be fixed withn let say 1-2 weeks MAX! :(

Thanks anyway...

Dunno how long they keep the records, but if he did the upgrade his name and the time will be on the notes for your account as he'll want the commision - at least ask operator X who did the upgrade and what extension (nicely) than ask operator Y to speak to 'Nicks' supervisor as he didn't add the insurance you asked for - it may even be detailed in the notes anyway as I would think they get commision for that as well.

I always carried my device very carefull. Yesterday I opened the device and the screen was cracked. nothing on the outside, only the screen had a crack and is useless now. I had to send it to T-Mobile since my garentee is one year (sorry for the bad english)

Very strange,.. is seems like the screen can crack without bumping it to something.

Well,.

I phoned up T-mobile NL. and they said I might be under warrenty, since the device is less than one year old. The sent me an enveloppe for the device to sent back. So I did yesterday, including the ticket I got when I bought the device.

I would take 10 days (they said) to fix it and sent back. If it woudn't fall under warrenty the device would be sent back fixed with a bill...

I really hope it will be fixed without having to pay. I was really carefull with it...

Hmm, I'm not that careful- I've got some scratches...
Anyway, it was VERY expensive weekend (I had to cancel my trip Germany- Lufthansa, only taxes refunded, canceled car hire reservation, broken screen in my PDA, ALMOST crashed my mondeo, some other unplaned expenses) so 200 more is not a big deal

M8, hopefuly they will fix your PDA for free :)
let me know please!

I understand guys..what u all are going thru..my screen has broken not once but twice..n like some of u guys mentioned i had never put any stress on my device...still it broke..for the first change, i had to pay( i fought with imate management but they didnt do anything..i have a post about our conversations) but second time, i just sent them a single email and they changed my screen for free.

Too b honest, i feel imate jasjar have some design issues...just like a blot appearing on keypads(extreme top left n right side) because the cushion padding is not effective.

What ill suggest, we should get together and email these people..however iknow that wont have much effect but still..it might have some effect..

Thanks mate!

I'm doing my best to getr this fixed under warranty but it looks like I'll have to pay 200ish... :(
Unfortunatly, I've got EXEC and HTC EUROPE doesn't care too much about them...

btw. I'm very surprised with this kind of demage/crack. I tought that this PDA is well protected..
I was wrong :(
Sad.
And the worst thing is that for £200 I can buy A NEW PDA :(

Jackar
9th April 2006, 04:30 AM
Columb > but can you have a new EXEC for 200 quids ?
And if you want to have it done within 1-2 weeks, do yourself a favour and keep your adrenaline down by NOT sending it to the O2. Or you`ll end up just like me (8 bloody weeks...). And not only me....

As for the screen cracking > I think, that the biggest problem is that the display cover lid is too strong !
Well, very surprising, but if it would be a little bit more soften, then the case itself, the LCD lid itself would take small pressures. But now, the whole case and display takes all the pressures and forces on the PDA & lid, because the LCD is very, very strong attached to the lid (which has an aluminium cover - another strong part)... So applying a force on one corner of lid applies the force on the LCD as well...

By any chance are you guys putting your universal into a tight pocket, where you have to press the universal to make it fit? What is likely happening is that the Universal is *bending* slightly in your pocket, and this would cause the screen to crack.

I broke my screen in December on Christmas Eve, I did drop the phone onto a hard floor so I wasn't surprised. I got it fixed by O2 and the cost was £185. Fortunately I was covered by my household insurance so it only cost me the excess of £50.

I have just repaired my Jasjar LCD which was cracked, and I think the problem is as following, the device has a big opening between its upper and lower covers and anything can slip in between, i.e. a coin or anything else. furthermore the upper cover is relativly soft, you can feel it, it can easily be bent and if pushed against the keyboard while something in between it will surely crack the LCD, so my advice to the skeptics:

-keep your device inside its case ALWAYS.
-keep it in your hands when you think there could be some pressure on its upper cover, trust me it is very sensitive and can easily be cracked.

Hi all,..

My screen got broken 3 weeks ago. It didn't fall or something,..I just got it out of my pocket and the inside of my screen was suddenly broken...

Now it comes,..T-Mobile netherlands SUCKS! They said to me: sent the device to the t-mobile repair shop, and it will be returned after 10 working day's. Because I haven’t got much convedence in the T-mobile company I phoned them up every 3 days asking for a status update.

2 hours ago T-mobile said to me that the device is sent back to my house with a bill, and not repaired. This bill is for opening up the device to see what's wrong with it. (screen broken!). The T-mobile employee told me that the bill is 42000 euro's. This should be 42 euro's, and it's not correct because it is under guarantee. Opening up the device is free of charge because the device is less than one year old! Within one year the diagnoses for the repair shop should be free, but therefore I needed to send the guarantee ticket with the device for repair,..WHICH I DiD!

So,.. now I haven’t got my pone back, the postman will bring it with a Bill of 42 euro. T-mobile advised me to not accept it, and let it be sent back to the repair shop. They will have a look at it and phone me up when they know more about the problem and agreement. So another two weeks.... PFfffff

This is not the first problem I have with T-Mobile Netherlands. Some time ago I bought a GPRS bundle for 9 euro,..unlimited GPRS. T-mobile told me that it would be activated in 2 hours, so i used it the other day to be sure that it is activated so I would pay huge amount of money for the data. ....... At the end of the month I received a bill: 192,- euro for data,..They didn't activate it. Nothing I could do,..just to pay it.

So,... My advice,... not to go to T-mobile!

Okay, I just broke my screen too. However, I'm not anyone's customer as I obtained my unlocked O2 Exec off of ebay.

So O2 will not service my phone, even if I'm willing to pay for the parts and labor. They won't even send my the part.

This sucks big-time.

Anyone have a suggestion? All I need is the screen/lid and someone who will sell it to me.

Well,.. Just got a reply from T-Mobile.

The device cannot be fixed according to them,..Fixing the screen will cost 700 euro. I founded out myself by phoning them up several times.

They send me a new offer from de department Lost and Found. A new device will cost me 309 euro. The old one will be sent back to me unrepaired.

Some time ago they made a mistake by activating the GPRS data bundle. I assumed that I was activated, but is wasn't. So the next bill was 191 euro gigher than normal. this was because it wasn't activated, but the helpdesk employee told me that It would be activated within 2 hours. I waited one day and started using the GPRS. stupid me...

for me: when my T-Mobile contract ends,..i will leave them and go to a different provider. schitty comany. total costs: 309 and 191 euro.

Hi all,
I have had the same problem with my exec, i have already had two with a broken screen and the third one i have just now has a broken screen too. I think there must be some sort of design flaw before they break this easy. The one i have just now doesn't even have a mark on the case yet the screen is still cracked down the left hand side.

I'm a little better of than most of the stories i've read so for tho. Every time i've just phoned o2 and they've sent me a new pda within the following 1-2 working days. This time tho when i get it replaced i think i'm gonna get a nokia n80 from them instead as it's getting a little tiresome getting it replaced everyother month.

My Exec won't charge cos the metal bit on the inside of the phone has become loose.

Phoned them up, arranged for a replacement (or is that a refurb?) to be sent out. They said if the phone was faulty then they wouldn't fix it just send out another one.

Unfortunately, the Exec is out of stock and I've now got no phone! Gonna get on the blower to them tomorrow and get any phone from them to cover the interim period.

I've got the gold cover insurance so it shouldn't cost be me more than 25 quid.

My first exec got a big black mark inside the screen from pressure against the leading edge of the screen when it was closed in my pocket and I was carrying something. Nothing showed on the case - it was pretty slight pressure.

The point about getting an exec was that I was worried about the vulnerability of the exposed screens on all the other pda phones (except I guess the communicator & maybe P910)

But now I see this is not a rugged phone - the screen is in a very weedy lid with little protection - much worse than in the conventional open pocket pc style even if they don't have a lid.

Lucky for me mine broke within a month of supply and o2 reluctantly swapped it for refurb (at least I got a spare battery & charger out of it)

Reminds me - must take out insurance in case it happens again :-o

I also had my lcd crack - phone closed in pocket - no impact..

so where is the cheapest place to get one... assume fitting is merely small torx drivers and a bit of care?

JasperJanssen
29th May 2006, 11:11 PM
Check out the service manual, available on the ftp. Replacing the screen is more than any 'just', it involves quite literally unscrewing *everything* in the phone, including the motherboard, camera modules, etc.etc.

It looks doable, but it's not 'just' some torx screws.
