Backup file format - need to recover deleted backup

How can I recognize a backup file on a SD card without working FAT?
The backup was made using the build-in tool. What's the file's extension, does it have any specific header?
Thanks a lot, recovering the backup is my only chance to save my PIM.

The backups made with xBackup are in the name compactflashbackup.
Is it there in your SD?
