I am very interested in other Universal-users' experiences with and thoughts about reading pdf files on the Univeral. Here are mine.
Bundled with Universal comes ClearVue as pdf reader. Among the 24 pdf files I now have on my storage card, ClearVue is able to read 17. Trying to read the others, there comes an error message with5 files, one file is read but unreadable on the screen and one file makes the program crash.
I first installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.0 successfully, but after a hard reset (before I bought Spb Backup), I got an error message when I tried to reinstall it. Then, I installed version 1.0, which initially worked fine, but later stopped functioning. Later on, I discovered that the files from version 2.0 were there and the program could be run by clicking on the exe file from a file manager.
With both programs, most pdf files are difficult to read. We have to choose between having too small letters or lines which are too broad for the screen. In addition, with Adobe the letters tend to be somewhat unclear, having a kind of shadow at each letter.
In the end, Adobe offers a solution, namely word-wrapping the lines in pdf files. Adobe calls it "reflow". Using this function, loading the document is painfully slow, but the text is very clear and is nicely presented on the screen. From Adobe Acrobat 5.0, pdf-files ready for this function may be made. At present, very few pdf-files may use this function. Among the 24 pdf files on my storage card, only 4 files are "reflow" ready.
