Cingular 8125 stock out of box, what to do

I pretty much just have a few very simple questions. I have read numerous thread about upgrading roms and unlocking and not unlocking and have hit a dead end.

I see that some people are saying that you should back up onto a sd card. Should I do this. Is it necessary being that I dont not have a card yet. I am looking at summinter's custom cingular roms and will probably use one of these in my upgrade. Do i back up and if so what programs does anyone reccomend. If i dont back up can i still get it back to stock.

I was in the same situation you were in. When I received my phone the first thing I did was power it on and sync it up with ActiveSync. After that I just ran Sumiter's 2.17 ROM. I didn't unlock or do anything extra. Hope that helps.
