Hey, is it possible to get RSS feeds for the forums? I think there is a phpBB feature for that. I think it'll be very useful for all of us.
Thanks!

WiKi's RSS is using "Dublin Core" extension (http://purl.org/rss/1.0), so you need a RSS Reader with such support.
I'm using Opera 8.1 and it works well for such RSS and as a bonus it works well with ATOM feeds, unfortunately there is a bug in Opera when dealing with ATOM feeds. It doesn't show the actual posted dates. But I think it is fixed already in the latest opera...

I'm using rss from several phpBB based boards so it's possible, though I don't know how. But someone has to put a little time in it.
So pls pls pls...pls

Does WiKi's RSS work for you? (URL for subscription: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=RecentChanges&format=rss)

Not sure :-( it says 0/0. At the moment I'm using Skookum v2.0.0.0, which can keep me up-to-date with podcasts as well. It's still under development & it's free. Can't remember wether it worked with HappyJackRoad PoketRss, my trial has expired & I wasn't completely pleased with it so unmilling to pay for it.
If one of you know a great PocketRss reader I'm pleased to hear. In the meantime I'm going to pm Peter Poelman to ask for the implementation of rss feeds on the board, maybe it works.

in the mean time, someone could do a screen scrape every hour or so on the latest news on the home page.
how do xda dev people feel about that though.
it's not something that's looked on favourably by most people.

Well scrape could be better than nothing. But for the moment I'm going to wait for Peter's answer.

Switched from Skookum to Newsbreak (trial) via A6.times (didn't work) & Newsbreak does pick-up the wiki rss messages :-)
No answer from Peter till now.

yeah, having it for the wiki is neat, but I want it for the forums. I tried /external.php, which is what most of these forums use, it doesn't exist.

The reference /rss.php isn't working either.
Peter Poelman has received my question from the May 27th this week, no answer yet. Guess he's not to interested in it. Too bad I think it's really convenient to view the forum with rss. I use it for other fora too.

Please Peter, try to make RSS work on the forum.
It would be so nice to get all the new topics in my newsreader, instead of browsing to the site every hour.

@ MDANavymom: Maybe I'll give it another try to see where I went wrong in a few weeks or so. First I go on holiday for three weeks.
Pity Peter didn't respond to my PM, maybe he gets thousands of them a day, I don't know ...
@ JonTheNiceGuy: no PM, but if you're capable of getting us the rss, I would certainly be very pleased.

V,
It shows nicely all the topics the hyperlinks are working, all I'm lacking is the body of the post itself. But for a scrape it's a very good start to maybe having it all
Great job again V, really appreciate it.

I can't see a way to get the body of the post from the database from this side, so I think I'll try to scrape it out as well. Shouldn't be impossible, but it'd be easier with the database in my hands >crazy madman laugh<

>crazy madman laugh< you've just blown your opportunity to host the database yourself gnignigni.
V if you could scrape the topic too, that would be wonderful just like the real thing & we wouldn't see the diff, but pls don't cause then I owe you even more than I do already ;-)
BTW hug Alexander for me & see hi to mrs. V forgot that in my e-mail. & yes I do tend to make my life one big thread with the use of all possible media.

Hmmm. I've just had a quick look at scraping the text of the posts as well. It'll be bandwidth intensive, since I can't pluck out just the most recent post, I've got to scrape each thread and pull out relevant data. If anyone's got access to the mysql/sql, let me know.
But I should be able to get topic title and text, and maybe some other stuff :)
However, I'm in the office and really busy - typical V, I can't resist trying to knock together the php, but I've got no time! Ok, have to stop for 30 mins while I do some work that I actually get paid for
TGI Friday.
V
PS - you should see my rss reader for the new website. It's scraping no end of juicy good stuff, and spits it out in a 100 page summary of all the news I can eat. Adding XDA forums rss feeds will mean I can finally turn off my vestigial worm like body and turn into a true all knowing God Emperor.

Guys,
Give this a go (it's an rss feed btw):
http://www.vijay555.com/scrape/xdaall.php
This will attempt to gather all of the recent activity from the board from the main portal page. It's an intensive process to gather the necessary info, and some news readers will timeout doing it.
Thus, give this one a go instead:
http://www.vijay555.com/scrape/xda10.php
This is the 10 most recent posts.
Let me know how if it works for you.
Test it out here:
Google Reader (http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vijay555.com%2Fscrape%2Fxdaall.ph p?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vijay555.com%2Fscrape%2Fxdaal l.php) (It's nicer then reading the board :))

@rebellish: why wasn't this url advertised more? I've been looking for about half a year for it , but I'm a happy kid in the candy store now :-D
Thanks all of you

I'd seen the fourm-30.rss link a while back on the news page - it works well for me. I wonder why I bothered making my scraper now, I thought the old .rss must have broken, but it works well AFAIK.
My scraper is slightly better IMHO, as it scrapes full html with formatting where possible.

For my rss news reading on the PC and PDA, I have a gregarius set up that I use and that will be launched with my new website.
But otherwise, I read it a browser I wrote that reads RSS.
