The trash folder was a good idea to move some of the recent spam messages out of the way, but apparently trashed messages still show up in the "View posts since last visit" and "View posts of last day" lists. So for members who frequently use this feature, the trash folder doesn't solve anything.
It shouldn't be too difficult to hack the forum software to solve this. The "View posts since last visit" and "View posts of last day" links use a simple search function, I believe, so you could just alter the search parameters to exclude the trash folder.
