Why would I pay for this when I get direct push using summiters' 2.17 version?

I actually get the emails on my phone before it shows on my inbox on the pc.

Cingular is not charging for the ROM download.

The "paying" comes in if you're using Direct Push at all.

Now that it is officially launched, Cingular wants all DP users to be on a "special" (read expensive) DP rate plan.

If you're using DP over MEdia.Net it may keep working or it may be blocked via proxy. No one knows.

Cingular will only guarantee DP over a DP data plan.

There's some wisdom in this on Cingular's part. The default APN wap.cingular, lowers IP lease times when it gets busy. When your IP changes, the heartbeat breaks and isn't re-established until a 7 minute timout lapses on the 8125. The new plan will probably provide a different APN that holds IP leases longer. We've absolutely seen this issue on Cingular's network and have discussed the problem with them. Originally, it looked like we were going to have to roll up our own APN which lengthened lease timeouts since some of our 8125 equipped mucky-mucks were wining about occasional 7 minute delays.

As far as pricing goes, I believe it's $49.95 and includes unlimited data. This is the same that the standard unlimited data plan costs now IIRC. I'll get more info on this Monday when I chat with our Cingular about changing the plans of all our cooked rom users.

As pointed out, DP plan is $44.95/mo with a voice plan. Current PDA plan is $39.95/mo with voice plan and $44.95/mo without a voice plan. So it is not the same as unlimited data plan cingular has today.
