View Full Version : T-Mobile UK AKU 2.3: Mr. Clean goes to London!

We've been getting some great ROMs designed for US carriers, but our UK T-Mobile friends seem to have gotten left in the cold. Sure a new ROM is available, but it's only being sold on new devices at this point. So I decided to build off the base Mr. Clean ROM and create a custom version for T-Mobile UK.
This is a AKU 2.3 ROM, using the latest OS core, the 2.24 bootloader, the 2.25 Cingular Radio ROM and a customized version of the T-Mobile UK Ext ROM. I've gone through the Ext ROM and dumped anything that seemed unnecessary, keeping just the vital bits. Repacked a few things, and included some vital accessories (Total Commander, Registry Wizard 1.0T (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725), and the MIDlet Java Session fix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=53707)) to finish things off.
.NET Compact Framework v2 is packed in as well, but it doesn't install by default. You can install it manually if you so choose by going to the NETCFv2 folder in the Ext ROM and running the CAB.
--------------------------
Exact version numbers are as follows:
IPL: 2.24
SPL: 2.24
GSM: 02.25.11
OS: 2.24.10.1
Within the OS, Device Information reports:
ROM version: 2.24.10.1 WWE
ROM date: 4/17/06
Radio version: 02.25.11
Protocol version: 4.1.13.12
ExtROM version: 2.24 Mr. Clean TMoUK
And the OS build is reported as:
OS 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0)
--------------------------
This version of the ROM supports A2DP natively.
Push Mail is of course supported.
I've tested the ROM with US based GPRS settings, but bundled the final version with UK based GPRS and MMS settings. Unfortunately since I don't have an active T-Mobile UK SIM card I wasn't able to test those. Hopefully someone can give it a go and let the forum know ASAP if there is an issue. This is one aspect where I was flying blind.
I'd also love it if a Blackberry user could install the BBConnect client and let us know if it works with this ROM or not. According to T-Mobile it shouldn't, but we all know that's been proven wrong in the past. Ideally I'd love to have someone who's got it working now upgrade and try it. This way we're testing from a known good situation.
One final thing, I had to repack the Soft Key application. If everyone can pound on that and make sure it works, that would be awesome.
And with that...
Enjoy the ROM (and don't forget to CID unlock before upgrading!) :)
ftp://xda:xda@xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/MrClean_RUU_WIZARD_224a_AKU23_WWE_CUSTOM_T-MobileUK.zip
Edit: It's been mentioned that some users may need to enter the WAP proxy info. If everything works, disregard this, however if you do need to enter a proxy server to browse the web you can use the following: 149.254.201.132:8080.

Hi,
you did a superb work but, IMO, you chose a wrong name: Mr Clean ROM, in fact, is a ROM without ANY mobile operator's stuff while your ROM contains T-Mobile UK customizations. So, from my point of view, it's no more a Clean ROM!!!

sounds fantastic. Those on T-Mobile have been waiting for ages for a ROM update, so your work will be valued by many.
Just a couple of questions before I jump on the boat:
Has it got the T-Mobile UK today screen customisation? I am on the 1.06 T-Mobile UK ROM and the first part of the today screen has shortcuts for the T-Mobile favourites (IE) application, contacts, calendar and notes. I quite like it and I don't want to lose it. If you got rid off it in the new ROM, would it be possible to install CAB files from my current extended ROM once the device has been upgraded with your ROM? I've got a copy of my existing Exetended ROM, so maybe I could select and install these CAB files later? or are there any incompatibility issues between the 2 ROMs, i.e. cab files that only install on signed T-Mobile ROMs??
Browsing the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=T-Mobile%201.6.2.105%20UK, I guess these are the bits I am talking about here:
CAB: \Extended_ROM\TMO_UK_Browser_Signed.cab
[from the wiki:Creates unnecessary Internet Explorer Shortcuts.]
and/or it could be this:
CAB: \Extended_ROM\TMO_UK_UXC_Signed.cab
Shortcuts, registry entries for today plugins, softkeys, T-Mobile sound. Not needed.
and/or it could be this:
CAB: \Extended_ROM\TMO_UK_Browser_Signed.cab
[from the wiki:Creates unnecessary Internet Explorer Shortcuts]
Could you include these files in the Ext ROM, or could they be installed afterwards?
I suppose it means I don't want my ROM to be fully clean, but to include the good bits that are part of the current T-Mobile UK ROM! The best of both worlds :!:
Also, will it be possible to upgrade/downgrade to the soon-to-be-released official T-Mobile UK ROM, or to the current T-Mobile ROM in case anything goes wrong?
I can't wait - my Wizard will be very happy :D
Thanks for your help.

Top stuff.
Just a quick point.. Im using a T-Mobile UK upgraded to a 2.17 Qtek ROM. I had CID & SIM unlocked it using Lokiwiz 0.2b prior to upgrading. Would I need to run the newer Lokiwiz 0.3 before upgrading to this ROM? And how do I access the Net 2.0 install CAB in the Ext Rom?
Cheers.

Hi,
you did a superb work but, IMO, you chose a wrong name: Mr Clean ROM, in fact, is a ROM without ANY mobile operator's stuff while your ROM contains T-Mobile UK customizations. So, from my point of view, it's no more a Clean ROM!!!
Don't worry, I'll still keep maintaining the original Mr. Clean ROM. That said, I still think the name applies. While this particular ROM may be customized for T-Mobile UK, it has been stripped of any "extra" bits and just keeps what is needed. As a result, it should stike a balance between a base Mr. Clean install and a fully loaded carrier build. I tried to build it with just the essentials...more or less what you'd end up with if you took the original Mr. Clean and individually added on the T-Mobile bits.
Has it got the T-Mobile UK today screen customisation? I am on the 1.06 T-Mobile UK ROM and the first part of the today screen has shortcuts for the T-Mobile favourites (IE) application, contacts, calendar and notes. I quite like it and I don't want to lose it.
No, the Today Screen UI bits have been yanked. They took up a WHOLE lot of real estate and weren't particularly functional as far as I could tell. Really felt as if it was designed for a smartphone rather than a PDA. Also didn't want to take the performance hit. As it is, Calendar, Contacts and IE are in the Start Menu by default (T-Mobile UK typically moves them) and you can add the Notes link to the Start Menu in the settings. This still gives you access to your apps with a single click, but doesn't require the T-Mobile UK UI customizations. For what it's worth, T-Mobile US didn't bother with the custom today UI over here. ;)
If you're looking for a suggestion for Today screen plug-ins, I'm personally a fan of the O2 XDA bits. Someone had posted a link to it here on the forum awhile back. I keep that running on my personal Wizard.
You can always install any CAB files that you've got. The T-Mobile UK UI CABs all start with UXC, I believe. They should install on most any ROM. I don't believe that T-Mobile "locks" any of its customization CABs.
Also, will it be possible to upgrade/downgrade to the soon-to-be-released official T-Mobile UK ROM, or to the current T-Mobile ROM in case anything goes wrong?
Make SURE that you CID unlock before upgrading and you'll be fine. Most everyone SIM unlocks, but not everyone realizes that the CID unlock option in Lokiwiz02b has to be run separately. Do the CID unlock (if you haven't yet done it) first and you should be able to load any ROM you choose.
Cheers.
You only need to CID and SIM unlock once. CID unlocking is what's important. If you only did a SIM unlock you'll run into trouble. Both the CID unlock and SIM unlock should be permanent so once you've performed both unlocks you're good to go. Won't need to do it again.
To accesses the Ext ROM start up Total Commander and manually enter \extended_rom into the directory field. From there, just go into the NETCFv2 folder and open the CAB file. It will install directly from there, and as it is set to read-only, it won't corrupt the Ext ROM.

How can I get it display using the 24 hour format?
This seems to be a minor issue, but it bothers me when using Pocket Informant.

This is a setting that's built into WM5, though due to the way the drop down menu displays it can be easy to miss. ;)
Start -> Settings -> System -> Regional Settings -> Time -> Time style
Choose one of the four options:
h:mm:ss tt -- 12 hr clock
hh:mm:ss tt -- 12 hr clock with leading zeros on the single digit hours
H:mm:ss -- 24 hr clock
HH:mm:ss -- 24 hr clock with leading zeros on the single digit hours

Sounds like the phone was not CID unlocked when you tried to apply the upgrade.
What version numbers for each component is your device reporting on bootup?
Also, if you go into settings, which version numbers does the OS report for each component?

This is exactly what you see when you do not CID unlock. It's a common mistake as many people SIM unlock their phones but forget to CID unlock.
Since you said you still get the USB indicator on the bootloader (rainbow) screen, you're in luck. You should be able to recover.
1) Get the original 1.x ROM from the T-Mobile UK site.
2) Boot the Wizard to the bootloader and plug it into your computer. Do not worry about ActiveSync.
3) Flash the original 1.x ROM to your phone.
4) When it comes back up you should have a fully working Wizard, complete with phone service and ActiveSync.
5) Use Lokiwiz02b to CID unlock your Wizard. It has separate options for SIM unlocking and CID unlocking. Make sure you CID unlock.
6) Upgrade to the Mr. Clean ROM.
Note: If you cannot flash the original T-Mobile ROM, try unzipping the T-Mobile RUU package into a folder on your computer. Replace the default RUU exe with the NOID exe that comes packaged with Mr. Clean. If that also fails, use the special "downgrade" ROM that is mentioned in the CID unlocking for 2.x ROMs. If that still fails, you'll need to buy a CID unlock from http://imei-check.co.uk for £20. At this point you should then be able to reflash.

Imei-Check claims to do both a SIM and CID unlock in one shot. If you bought the service you should be ok. Both the SIM and CID unlocks are a one time thing. If you are unsure, you could always try using lokiwiz02b (so long as you still have a 1.x ROM) and attempt the CID unlock. As far as I know, it won't hurt anything.
To get to the Ext ROM you need to use an explorer type program (such as Total Commander) and go to the \extended_rom folder. That will allow you to view and copy items from the Ext ROM. You cannot delete, modify or copy items into the Ext ROM or you will corrupt it.
If you actually want to edit an Ext ROM, I'd suggest reading the thread on how to cook a homebrew ROM. Basically you have to break the combined ROM into parts, open the Ext ROM segment in WinImage, edit it there, save the image out and then package it up so it can be flashed to the device.

Upgraded the ROM last night and all went smoothly.
Just a couple of questions though, they may pertain to ROM 2.3 rather than this release in particular.
Firstly - when installing apps, it doesn't retrieve data on how much storage space is left?
Secondly - the 4-way nav option in ie. It appears to be stuck on, changing the registry entry for it doesn't change whether it's on or off?
Resolved this one, don't know why it was being funny though
Also, WAP proxy didn't seem to be setup?

seems ok so far, solved the wifi problem ( i thought)
today wifi is bad again.
and it seems abit slow in some things. i.e calendar fires up but shows no appointments, then after a few seconds they appear.
The oficial UK T-mobile rom is available today do will throw that on before anymore customisations and see what happens. If I still have problems then its back to the shop for this unit.

You'll see the space available when looking at the memory control panel or the remove programs control panel. Won't see it when just installing a CAB.
As for the proxy, I wasn't aware you needed one. I know in the US the proxy is only on the discount GPRS plan and many do not use it as it interferes with VPN connections. I'll add the proxy info to the first post in case someone else needs it. Thanks for mentioning it!

This ROM defaults to AKU 2.3 along with the latest (useful) T-Mobile UK settings, such as the Soft Key program and the local UK network settings. There are also some enhancements, like the updated camera driver that T-Mobile UK provides.
What is missing from this ROM are the useless bits, like the dumbed down Today screen plug-in that makes the Wizard look like a smartphone rather than a PDA. ;)
If you load this ROM, you will need to change the MMS config and the GPRS config in order to get web access and MMS messages in your local area. Otherwise, it should work for you as an upgrade.
That said, if you have a lot of your own customizations, you may just want to get the base Mr. Clean ROM to get the AKU 2.3 OS and then customize as you see fit.
Finally, if you just want to change the keyboard layout on any ROM, I suggest using Registry Wizard. It makes the edit a snap.

Hi gamescan, thanks for the ROM.
One problem though:
when I try to Super CID my Wizard, I get the following error:
ITWriteDisk - An internal error occurred.
seems I'm not the only one with this problem, which is preventing me from upgrading.
Is there a known solution?
Cheers
Sounds like you've got an AKU 2.x ROM on the device already.
If it is version 2.17 or below you can use the special downgrade ROM on the FTP (search for the AKU 2.x CID unlocking thread).
If it is version 2.21 or higher you cannot CID unlock with the tools on this forum. You would need to purchase the unlock from http://imei-check.co.uk. They claim to unlock SIM and CID all in one shot. Of course you have to pay for that. ;)
Once the CID has been unlocked you should be able to flash any ROM you choose.

Thanks for the reply gamescan.
I do indeed have one of the 2.x ROMs already.
I purchased the unlock from imeicheck, all went fine.
However I still cannot downgrade to any ROM
What do I try now?

Honestly, I'd drop a line to the imei-check guys. They claim that their software unlocks both the SIM and CID (and said emails have been posted all over this forum). If it did not unlock your CID for some reason, follow up and either ask them to fix it, or ask for a refund. I'm betting that they'll likely be interested in a phone that didn't properly unlock.

I installed this and the flashing worked perfectly thanks very much. Not so wild about the splash screen but you've made your mark!
Now some questions:
The last ROM I flashed to my phone had the default Windows Mobile 2005 phone dialer (shown in the screenshots here (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=601&p=1)). I really prefer this look. Any way to get it back? One thing I noted missing from the ROM is the readme.doc. When installing there's a screen with a button that launches a readme file but when I tried it wasn't found. I realise these files are put up for the hardcore users who wouldn't read a readme if they were paid but some of us are more than a little wary when putting our beloved PDAs through a ROM flash. Why does the calendar in this ROM always launch on the Month view and how can I change this default? When I connect my laptop via BT to the Wizard in order to go online there used to be an indication on the Wizard that it was connected. Now there isn't. How can I install this manually? I understand that this is supposed to be a 'clean' ROM. Also that different users want different registry tweaks. However, you've thoughtfully included the registry tweak that shows the status of CapsLock and SymLock but you have left out the other one that everyone agrees is necessary, namely the one that enables ClearType in landscape mode. Is it a big deal for you to add this to the ROM? Obviously, I'll be changing the key manually but it would be nice to have it inside the ROM as standard for when I recommend this to others. Thanks again. I really appreciate the hard work that went into making this ROM. The questions above are not meant to be seen as complaints I am very grateful for all the time and energy that the enthusiasts in this forum put into improving their devices and then sharing that knowledge. Kudos OP.

Dear Kyphur and Gamescan
Thank you for all your help the other day.
The final solution (found on another thread) was to go into the bootloader and load the
CUSTOM_RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_101_11210_WWE.exe
ROM.
This reset the machine and restored activesync.
From there I could then use Lokwiz which worked flawlessly and unlocked SIM and CID.
I then loaded Gamescans ROM which worked fine (but I didn't like the splash screen, though I understand how you technically competent people should be allowed artistic freedom) , so I finally restored the new T-mobile ROM which again worked.
Again, a big thank you to all involved in the above software that you have made available. I have learned an awful lot from you and am most grateful for your time and patience.
With kindest regards

Tony (nssrac)Ok, thanks for the help.
I tried this.
First I put the phone into bootloader mode (took out the battery, put it back in again, pressed and held camera button and powered on) - USB comes up fine on the bottom left, but when I run CUSTOM__RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_101_11210_WWE.exe I *Still* get error 300 :(
I got another email from the "friendly" folks over at imei-check this morning:
Hello,
this is simply not correct. The so called "creator" of the ROM gave you an old version which can only handle G3 chipsets. Your device seems to have G4 chipset. In case you would force somehow to update the device with this NON STANDARD ROM your device would become a paperweight. SuperCID will allow you to flash any compatible ROM to your device. It will NOT allow you to "brick" your device. If you really want to brick your device simply put it in some water for a minute while running, the effect would be same as using a ROM update which does not support your chipset.
Solution: Take ANY standard 2.XXXX ROM Update you like.

It's all looking good with this rom so far.
One thing I do miss is the spinning Activesync icon in the top bar when syncing. This doesn't happen using this rom. It's nice to see that an email is actually being sent, without having to duck into Activesync and check.
Any chance this can be changed? Or that I can tweak the registry somehow to enable it?

Here is how you test that statement.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=52952
Pick one of the Radio Roms, don't worry you can reflash it back, be sure that it is a different version that what's installed currently (maybe the 2.17).
Follow the instructions.
If if fails then they are wrong because these Rom contain no IPL/SPL (the part that would be sensitive to G3 or G4 chipsets).
If it works then I'd say you can't flash 1.x Rom because I think they all used G3 IPL/SPL. In that case, tell me which 2.x Rom you want and I'll repackage it without IPL/SPL so you can flash it.

Can you please upload the single file from the extROM which customises the keyboard to the UK layout? Essentially, I want your completely clean 2.3 ROM (with no carrier customisations) plus this file that would have the correct layout for my British keyboard.

I installed this and the flashing worked perfectly thanks very much. Not so wild about the splash screen but you've made your mark!
I figured that given the name I'd given the ROM, using anything else for the splash just wouldn't be right! ;)
I'm also of the belief that a custom ROM should have a custom splash screen, mostly because I don't want *anyone* to ever mistake this for an official ROM. I know no one here would ever do that, but I can't control if the ROM gets downloaded and posted up elsewhere (hey, it's the Internet, people love to copy stuff). At least this way if someone does download it and install it, they'll know right away that this isn't from a carrier.
The default dialer is just a skin. There is a registry key to tweak this (unfortunately I do not recall it offhand, but a quick search should sort you out). The main reason I left in the T-Mobile skin is because 1) it is a T-Mobile ROM (the bare Mr. Clean does not have this) and 2) quite honestly I found the grey on white keys to be easier on the eyes then the blue on blue with the default skin. But that's the beauty of WM5, you can always change it if you like. :)
I've been messing around with the ETEN dialier lately. As soon as the smart dialing issues are worked out, I'll probably start using that as a default skin.
I suppose I always thought of the first post in the thread as a short readme, but your point is well taken. It's not worth updating the zip file just to add a readme, but I will do so for all future releases. Thanks for the suggestion.
Why does the calendar in this ROM always launch on the Month view and how can I change this default?
That is an artifact of having the Smart Key program installed. It uses the HTCCalender.exe executable which brings up the calendar in month form. If you tap on the default calendar plug-in on the today screen you won't default to the month view. This is one of the T-Mobile UK customizations that I felt was useful enough to keep in as many like to customize the two soft key buttons on the phone.
When I connect my laptop via BT to the Wizard in order to go online there used to be an indication on the Wizard that it was connected. Now there isn't. How can I install this manually?
The online indicator has changed in the latest OS ROM. Instead of the G/E icon changing, it now shows a second G/E icon over the reception bars when you are connected. Personally I preferred the old way myself, but this was a core OS change and it wasn't enough of a bugger for me to pick through and try to figure out if there was any way to roll it back or not.
One of the reasons I didn't make too many registry tweaks is because Registry Wizard is included in the ROM. Just start up the application, set the checkbox and apply the changes. Bam. ClearType is applied. :)
Thanks again. I really appreciate the hard work that went into making this ROM. The questions above are not meant to be seen as complaints I am very grateful for all the time and energy that the enthusiasts in this forum put into improving their devices and then sharing that knowledge. Kudos OP.
And thank you for the suggestions. I really do appreciate any and all feedback, as it'll help me craft even better releases in the future.

Well I'm stumped.
Out of curiosity, what are your EXACT IPL and SPL version numbers when you boot up? Actually, if you could post all the boot screen versions, that would be great.
Is it 2.xx or it is 2.xx.0001?
You may have stumbled onto something that's been suspected, but never confirmed. Once I know this, we just might be able to get you a solution.

I do believe this is another core OS change. Might have to yell at Microsoft. I suspect you'll see this in all of the AKU 2.3 ROMs.
Can you please upload the single file from the extROM which customises the keyboard to the UK layout? Essentially, I want your completely clean 2.3 ROM (with no carrier customisations) plus this file that would have the correct layout for my British keyboard.
The easiest way to do this is to install and use Registry Wizard. It's included in the Ext ROM with this ROM, but I've also linked to the original download in the first post so if you want to use the base Mr. Clean you can just grab it and install. I would strongly recommend this app as it is developed by another XDA-Dev forumer and is completely free.

I have just migrated to the Mr Clean AKU2.3 ROM posted a few weeks ago and horror of horrors I find I no longer have Task Manager, which is so important to me that I have the Comm Manager button assigned to it instead of to Comm Manager. A swift migration to the latest Cingular ROM put that right, but I would prefer to run a Mr Clean ROM, if only it incorporated Task Manager.

Ah, just what I thought. And now, if you don't mind being something of a guinea pig, I do believe we can get you sorted out. That said, a disclaimer first:
I DO NOT HAVE A 2.xx.001 DEVICE TO TEST ON. THIS IS UNTESTED AND MAY FAIL.
Please understand this. While I do endeavour to test everything I post, I can only guarantee that this will install on a 2.xx device. According to everything known about the Wizard it should also work just fine on a 2.xx.001 device but I wanted you to know this in advance. I don't like asking people to test stuff blind.
And now, a solution for Sporkguy:
1) Download the T-Mobile US 2.24 BETA ROM
ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/Tmobile/Untested%20t-mo%202.24%20beta/ruu_prodigy_224101_22410101_022511_wwe_test.exe
2) Install the T-Mobile US 2.24 BETA ROM as normal. To save time, please soft-reset when the customization screen appears.
3) Download the Mr. Clean 2.24a T-Mobile UK Sporkguy TEST ROM
ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Wizard/Roms/TEST_ROM_DO_NOT_DOWNLOAD/MrClean_RUU_WIZARD_224a_AKU23_WWE_CUSTOM_SPORKGUY_ TEST_T-MobileUK.zip
4) Unzip the Mr. Clean 2.24a T-Mobile UK Sporkguy TEST ROM to a folder and install as normal. Make sure you let the customizations run.
5) Let the machine reboot by itself.
6) At this point you *should* have a fully functional version of the Mr. Clean 2.24a T-Mobile UK ROM, complete with the proper bootloader for your device, the AKU 2.3 OS, Mr. Clean UK splash screen and the custom T-Mobile UK Ext ROM.
Please let me know if this works for you.

I'm not familiar with the Task Manager of which you speak.
I know that some ROMs put a link to the Memory Control Panel in the Start Menu.
Or perhaps you're talking about the O2 XDA tools (very sweet by the way) that install a few Today plug-ins as well as the quick menu in the upper right that gives you the ability to end any (or all) programs from any screen as well as soft reset via a menu option?
If it's something else, please let me know and I'll poke through the O2 Ext ROM when I've got some time. If I can identify the file in question, I'll see if I can't pull it out as a standalone bit.

One final note, there may be a "step 7" required.
After you've gotten everything installed, force a manual hard reset. Based on the way the ROM is setup right now, when you flash the second one, it won't automatically customize. You'll need to do a hard reset (clear storage option is fine) to get everything setup.
Good luck.

That's great, thank you very much. As I remember it was a feature of my original 2.0x T-Mobile ROM, and is also a feature of the 2.21 O2 ROM, and also a feature of the 2.24.10.1 Cingular ROM, so I assumed it was a standard feature, rather than being part of various OEMs extended ROMs.
It appears as a standalone entry in "Programs" entitled "Task Manager" and when running displays the available storage memory, program memory and a list of the running programs, with buttons to end a task, switch to a task or start a new task. Tremendously useful, as I say.
It's probably based largely on the code for "Running Programs" under "Settings, System, Memory", which it does resemble, but the extra memory info does make it more useful.
If I can beta test anything I'd be happy to help.
Many thanks

This ROM rocks! Thankyou.
I upgrade my TMobile MDA Vario from the original shipping rom to the new TMobile AKU2.0 rom and wasn't impressed..
Wanted to try this Mr Clean London rom, but thought I was stuffed as I hadn't CID Unlocked my phone prior to upgrading to AKU2.0.
I tried to downgrade it back to the original TMobile ROM, but hit an "upgrade" error as its not meant for downgrading.
So I thought, I'd just try the Mr Clean Rom, expecting it to fail, but no, it went on without any errors. Without me unlocking anything!
Has this rom been created to mimic a tmobile rom?
Whatever, it went on fine and works brilliantly, all text/mms/gprs settings etc worked without messing, activesync no longer has issues, no more random reboots, (I even like the splash screen!), the device feels much more stable and responsive.
Thanks again :)

Error 260 is a simple port error.
Error 300 is an incorrect RUU version.
The 260 just means your computer couldn't talk to the Wizard for some reason. This is usually resolved by resetting the Wizard.
The 300 error should not be an issue, but there is a possibility it could have something to do with the way the hacked version is reporting back the current version of your device.
If you're up for some more testing, I've created a 2.xx.0001 specific version of the base Mr. Clean ROM. It should still be considered a risk to flash, but I don't know off hand why it wouldn't work. I would be very interested to know if you can flash this version to your Wizard or it if reports Error 300 as well.
You can find the ROM and any discussion in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=54578
Hopefully we'll get this all sorted soon, as I'm sure more G4 devices will be coming onto the market and we wouldn't want everyone to be tied to carrier ROMs. :)

I originally found them posted on a thread here in the forums. I don't remember it offhand, but a quick search should turn it up. I'd give you the exact name, but due to working on a few different ROM configs and testing I don't have it loaded into my Wizard at the moment.
Sadly, I only have one Wizard which means any testing requires copying my data off, flashing to test and then copying my data back on. I'm not trying to hide any information, I just don't have an easy way to look it up right now. That said, it *IS* a terribly cool tool and I consider it a must have.
Has this rom been created to mimic a tmobile rom?
Glad you like the ROM! :)
To answer your question, no, it doesn't mimic the T-Mobile ROM. The CID on the ROM is blank, just like any other custom ROM.
I have been looking for a few days and cant find any info on Wehre the ext rom is stored on the Wizard.
1) Start Total Commander
2) Change directory to "\extended_rom"
Been using this most of the week, and it seems stable.

With any WM5 device, it will take about 30 seconds or so to commit any changes to the flash. As far as I can tell the device works on a delayed write cycle so that when you save something it looks like it has been written, but is technically in RAM. It's then written to flash in the background.
If you make a change (editing the reg is a perfect way to demonstrate) and then immediately soft reset, chances are very good that the change will be lost.

What benefits will I see in using this ROM over the Qtek 2.17 rom I am currently using, or the new official T mobile rom?

:D
The upgraded ROM seems to work fine with my Vario. I also run Intellisync on it and this also works fine. I was having major problems with resets, call dropping and a very slow operation but it all seems to be fine now.....thank you all very much for the excellent info.

also to add, after installing tomtom and other apps so it mimics my previous config, I have a pair of Motorola BT 820 headphones, which using the original rom and the a2dp add on file (tornado), I had always had the odd sound drop out usually every minute or so, and the play/pause & track buttons didn't always work as expected. With this ROM, all, and I mean all, the pausing has gone and the function works as I fully wanted. I have played mp3 through them for many hours at a time, with no problem whatsoever! :D and the new USB to PC comms options seem to allow you to change the way it syncs (similar to WM2003, no network connection via usb) maybe wifi syncing is possible again!

Been using this most of the week, and it seems stable.
Although there does seem to be an issue with it "forgetting" settings, i.e. after a softreset I have to re-register TomTom, or re-enter my WPK key for my home WiFi, and a couple of other things.
Anyone else had this?
I had same problem. After softreset my WM5 run like as first time, and I lost "today" settings, plugins, and some other settings. Something like a half-hard reset.

Browsing the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=T-Mobile%201.6.2.105%20UK, I guess these are the bits I am talking about here:
Woot! Someone made use of my lazy afternoon's work :)

I don't think so. that's been removed in active sync, not on the device :(

i've been reading through this, and it seems to be that some people have been able to install this without a cid unlock first, is this correct? I don't think I can cid unlock my wizard as it's got the current tmobile software on it - alternatively if i can then that would be easier I guess. my ipl and spl show as 2.21 each but with no further numbers so I think this means I can downgrade to do a CID unlock?

well i took a small blind leap of faith and tried anyway - i was able to update without cid unlocking from the current tmobile uk rom to this mr clean rom.
not saying that it will work for everyone obviously

and how does it compare with the official TMob UK AKU rom?
I've been using Mr Clean TMob UK rom since its been released, and I'm v happy with it - but I don't know what I am missing out!

the current tmo rom is 2.21 so i assume is actually a few revisions behind mr clean. mr clean is0 faster and seems to be less flakey, on the tmo rom if you lost reception during a call it would have a fit
all in all i would recommend avoiding the official tmo rom - it would be like going back to the dark ages

I've recently installed the clean(er) Mr Clean ROM (which is great, by the way) but I would love to have a way to get the soft-key selection option back. I guess I had assumed it was a general thing, rather than a T-Mobile addon. I wonder why the Buttons option in Settings/Personal doesn't do it, as it does every other button? (The Calendar defaulting to Month View would be a bonus actually, as I'd prefer it that way)
Is there any chance you could dig out your file for just that part of the T-Mobile install and post it as a CAB file? Many thanks for all your great work gamescan.

I used the qtek 2.17 rom for a while and had no problems, then I installed the official new 2.21 T-Mobile rom, which was a downgrade big time (better than the 1.6.2.4 version though), slower, less stable. So I installed this rom on my vario. To me it doesn't seem much better than the Qtek rom, I just didn't have to set everything up, as Gamescan has done a great job of including what we need. I think that the Qtek rom was more stable as it would go for approx 6-7 days without needing a reset, whereas this one needs to be reset every 2-4 days. I haven't detected any better radio performace with this rom over the Qtek one either.

It's only there if you're running the T-Mobile version of Mr Clean.
As I said, I'm running the 'fully clean' Mr Clean, but would still like this utility from the T-Mobile release if someone could separate it from the other stuff.

After reading about this rom a week or so back when I got my new Tmobile vario I was disappointed to find out that my 2.21.0001 SPL/IPL were going to prevent me from loading this Rom. However, I followed this guide here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=lokiwiz&start=25) and all worked like a charm :) Many thanks to the creator of that guide and all that helped him.
Essentially all you're doing is recooking the Rom so it doesn't contain the IPL/SPL parts, meaning you can circumvent the CID lock :) It also contains a modified version of the Rom Update Utility, which should get you around the Error 300's I also experienced.
One note, the utility was in Italian for me, but shouldn't be hard to follow if you've flashed roms before :)
Also, loving this Mr Clean version :)

i m generally happy with mr. clean, but strange i m unable to install .cab files on the device anylonger. a cab opens as an archive and displays all files in it.
any ideas?

most AKU roms seem to have the same problem. see the thread running over 10+ pages about lost calls/radio reset. Not sure if mr Clean can do anything about it. I've got the same problem too, and I don't know what causes it as I don't run any of the programmes that have been identified as possible causes to the problem...

I used the first three digits of my IPL/SPL, which was 2.21 :)

 I've just pm'ed you and asked whether you would be willing to update the work you did for us on TMobile UK by using the newly released TMob USA 2.26 rom? the new ROM fixes the radio resetting itself while in a call-kind of bug. That would be great :P :P
With more than 100 replies to this thread you are very popular indeed and our fate depends on you..!

Ok, quick update.
Having spent a further few hours trawling the forum I gave in and paid to have the phone unlocked. It seemed to work so that part is all good now.
Sadly the more I searched, the more dead links to the Mr Clean T mobile UK rom I found and the more confused I got!!!
If anyone has just two minutes to PM me a link to the latest (stable) version of this Rom I would be seriously grateful!!!
I would spend another day at work looking through 20 million posts for an answer but this may severely jeapordise my earnings potential / job / career / sanity ...... etc.
Go on punks, make my day  . Please

And with that...
Enjoy the ROM (and don't forget to CID unlock before upgrading!) :)
ftp://xda:xda@xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/MrClean_RUU_WIZARD_224a_AKU23_WWE_CUSTOM_T-MobileUK.zip
Does anyone know if this ROM is still available, I can't get it from the FTP?
I know it's subjective, but are there better ROMS out there for the Wizard? I've got a T-mobile Vario II myself but I'm trying to gather info for my brother in law who has the original Vario. I'm basically looking for a stable ROM which supports the A2DP bluetooth profile. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
FrankyG
