Tell me about it. Or for my Canadian friends, "tell me aboodit".
I'm already looking to build an AKU 2.5 ROM...can't imagine why, 6 months after AKU 2.3 was built by MS, Cingular can't catch up.
So, it looks like we'll see a long delayed release based on a 7 month old OS version and potential radio and connection freakiness. Awesome.

Hey Summiter,
Is the version they are about to release the same one that you called shitty a couple weeks ago?

Is it naive to give Cingular the benefit of the doubt and they addressed some of the bugs that you found before they officially release it? Would not the version that was leaked be more in line with a beta release? I appreciate the work you have done but why denigrate others?

Purely speculation.
I had thought about upgrading using one of the ROMS already out here. When my device crashed and had to be sent in due to a hardware issue I was very happy that I did not. Clearly I would not have been happy with a $400 paperweight.
Additionally I have one comment regarding request for help. I have PMed you before Summiter asking for help. Though there may be answers as to how to install, what to install and in what order, this is not easily determined. That is the main reason I have not used these upgrades. I've read if I had a problem that I could downgrade but with all the confusion I did not bother. I'm not above searching to look for answers but this is a big deal. And I know you are busy but I for one would be real appreciative if the next ROM that you post includes step by step instructions you will really help many like myself.

Naw, not naive, go for it.
I based my comments on the possiblity that what gets released tomorrow will be identical to the leaked 2.25 ROM. I came to that conclusion because, although the file being linked to atm is an incomplete archive, the screenshot indicates the same ROM, radio, protocol, extended ROM, and build date as the wonky leaked AKU 2.2 version. What's there now could very well be a placeholder for the real release tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure I wasn't denigrating anyone. I stated a rhetorical non-question to postulate my personal preliminary hypothesis post-haste.
All these big words have made me hungry. I'm gonna go make a Pb&j sandwich.

Blame it on Cingular. MS just releases the OS, and then HTC and the carries write the drivers and radio stacks for their devices. It could be worse. Look and the Motorola Q that just came out; it has no MSFT at all and how long it has been since MS released it? In that case Verizon/Motorola are draging their feet. BTW, your 2.3 ROM rocks and I bet 2.5 will be even better.

Slimsaturn,
Cingular has been experiencing signal power fluctuations since late Jan.-early Feb. Their acknowledgement of this issue also fluctuates from full disclosure to total denial???? They originally stated that it was in 29 markets including S. Fla. and were very forthcoming with account credits. Then they(multiple c.s. reps) were in full denial blaming everything else possible including the four different lines of service I have with them. Recently, they again acknowledged the issue and said they still cannot figure out what is causing the fluctuations and gave me a 50% credit.
The funny thing is the problem was brought on by something they changed/upgraded. It was like a switch was thrown and my signal strength that was usually full at home, work, and points between varies from FULL to NONE in a matter of seconds on all four different numbers. I have lossed/dropped atleast five calls while on the phone with their techs to help my cause. Their range of acknowledgement must be from directives they receive. I mentioned this to the last rep. and she was extremely apologetic, but would not explain why they keep changing their story.

The bad file is:

39.0 MB (40,947,200 bytes)
It downloads fine, but fails when unpacking, with the following message:
"The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify its integrity, and try again."
Hope they figure out their problem soon!

I have spent the time here. Daily. I can usually figure things out but with all the talk about first SIM unlocking, CID unlocking, how that may affect your ability to downgrade to the original Cingular ROM if you have an issue has for me become very confusing. I would not ask for help without giving an effort. I know a lot of people do.
I previously owned an SMT 5600 and did the upgrade from Windows Mobile 2002 to 2003. It SEEMED much easier. Maybe its just in my head!

Cingular has press releases, a nice glossy page on their Web site, and then someone uploads a corrupted file. It's OK for people on this site who 'get it', but how many average users have already tried to download and install this corrupted file?
Even more amazing, someone in this thread mentioned that HTC was aware of the problem and would fix it 'sometime today'. How hard is it to upload a single file to a Web server? You think they'd make that somewhat of a priority.
Just bizzare.

19th June 2006, 04:19 PM
MOST people who read the press release and can afford this phone are business types who are NOT tech types. They will be taking their phones into Cingular stores to get them upgraded. The cingular reps will then find that this file is corrupt and start pushing to get a valid replacement.

Cingular's PDA support number is +1 800 304 3044
They have no farking clue what is going on.
HTC's number (to which Cingular will direct you after they make it clear they have no farking clue) is +1 877 878 6944
They will tell you that it take a whole day to post a new file to a web site. The idea of actually testing a download when they post it appears to be lost on them.
Call them both.

RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship.cab 39mb
RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship.exe-1.flv 26.2mb
RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship.exe-2.flv 11.4mb
RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship.exe .flv 34.5mb

19th June 2006, 07:31 PM
Well, considering I stumbled on to this topic a bit late, I'd wait to download until the file has stabilized in size for some period of time - or until HTC support says it's ok to download.
What is likely happening is that they have multiple download servers on the back end, and when you hit the link, you get a random server, which may or may not have the correct version of the file.
I just tried 5 minutes apart and got a 50mb file first, then a 25mb file....
hope this is helpful...

I think you screwed up in previous ROM update. Your ROM version is 1.8 while everything else is 2.25. The new official ROM is the same 2.25 someone posted here a few weeks back.
And the rom you try to apply is 1.8.11, the shipping ROM. Not the new updated ROM.

So what's the word on this ROM yet? Is it basically the same beta that was released a few weeks ago? Is there anything that's been updated since then? I'm still using summiter's AKU2.3_Custom_TEST2 ROM (and Cingular radio) and it's been great. Just wondering if it's worth the upgrade.
One thing about that TEST2 ROM though. I've noticed my phone will sit at 100% for quite a while, but then seems to lose its juice fairly quickly. I don't know if that's the ROM or an app I'm using. Do today screen apps generally drain the battery faster? I'm using Spb Pocket Plus, Spb Diary, and SBSH PocketWeather.
TIA!

It was mentioned a few times over at Howard Forums that the battery indicator in the task bar sucked a lot of resources. I have always left mine turned off since then, and did notice less lag with response times after doing so.

So what's the word on this ROM yet? Is it basically the same beta that was released a few weeks ago? Is there anything that's been updated since then?
I did a binary comparison and nothing is changed.
TIA!
One possible explanation I read is that every time you flash to a new ROM, the phone OS lost calibration of battery and still display incorrect battery meter. Let it drain and recharge for a few cycles and you will get an accurate meter after that.

After downgrading, CID and SIM unlocking and upgrading to summiter's AKU 2.3 ROM (and having great success with this ROM by the way), I hate to flash to the official ROM to find out my phone is locked again. Does anyone know if indeed flashing to the "official" HTC ROM will relock both the CID and SIM?

Initial Report after 5 minutes of use...
Seems a little bit snappier. Menus pop up with a little more authority now.
More free RAM at boot up. I've got 26+MB of program memory free at clean boot. I used to have about 22MB. Every little bit helps!
Where'd the proxy settings go? No option for proxy server under connections like there used to be. Hmmm...
GPRS seems to connect 2 or 3 seconds faster than it used to. Maybe in my head, but I swear it seems faster.
Auto update network time isn't enabled, nor is there an option to do so (unless tweaking the registry works with this version - haven't tried to do so yet).
ActiveSync - Running 4.2 on the desktop and it seems better. I was having a real problem with syncs in that the first sync after a reset was fine, but subsequent reconnects and syncs would almost always lock up or fail out. I've just done 5 back-to-back syncs with no problems. Yeah!

I read in another thread that when you flash your ROM, registry changes that you may have previoulsy made, DO NOT get wiped out, they stay, and this may cause some errors between different ROMS. Is this true? If so, how do you restore your registry to its "default" state of the new ROM?

Meh.
And to expand on that remark... It's the same ROM that leaked a while back. The only useful thing about it is the radio, which folks prefered over the 2.25 radio that came from a T-MO ROM.
There's not much to do with it, except that I am rebuilding the AKU 2.3 ROM with a leaner extended ROM customization, and some updated themes. It will have the radio from the Cingular 2.25 ROM.
I should have an AKU 2.5 ROM shortly and those who like to be on the bleeding edge can give it a whirl. If the radio in it stinks, I'll put the 2.25 radio all up in that bad boy.

Also - could you please have a look into the themes because all but the default windows/cingular theme have this annoying grey shaded area at the top and bottom (this coming from the TEST2 rom posted before).
As with you, I'm hoping to pick apart the new rom HTC posts... but apparently they pulled it for the time being as it was corrupt (suppose to be 73mb uncompressed, was 41mb... and the whole ruu was 39.1mb - htc went on a diet!).

ratcom, the dropped calls you were experiencing w/ the HTC ROM as well as the summiter's, were these intermitent, or was every call dropping after 4 minutes or so? It's a nice idea to get apps pre-installed but some of these require registration and therefore wouldn't be able to work (unless the user already has a registration key or is planning). Otherwise they're just taking up "space".

Okay that makes sense - its like it is communicating until it finds out it is NOT talking to a "g"band router - then drops the connection (and doesn't try to reconnect...)
Could someone chime in quickly how to fix this "G ONLY" registry setting for the less informed such as myself?

Before potentially confusing me (as well as others reading this thread) am I to correctly understand that this new rom CRIPPLES the 8125 ability to connect to "b" band routers and will allow only "G" band connections?
The link in the post above are directions for ENABLING "G" band access on your 8125.
It seems as though since I can not connect to a "B" band or mixed mode router - that my phone is already stuck in "G" only mode and instead I would need directions for restoring "MIXED MODE" capabilities?
My router is 802.11b and after upgrading to this new rom - I CAN NO LONGER CONNECT TO MY ROUTER?
Why would I want to enable "G" mode on my phone if that is what is supposedly causing these WiFi troubles in the first place?

I have a very, very strong feeling that the bugs have not been addressed.
Search for all posts by me - that's the quickest way to find the multiple posts outlining the process, and risks, and lack of waffle-making capabilities.
As an alternative, read the announcement post for various custom ROMs, many of them detail things quite nicely.
In a nutshell, it goes something like this:
-establish activesync
-CID unlock with aWizard, SIM unlock too if you're into that sorta thing
-run the ROM upgrader
-enjoy new ROM
-post experiences and observations here for all to see
If you could only see my PM inbox, you'd know why it's not the best way to ask for help. I usually defer folks to reading or posting on the forum anyway.
If you do have any issues with an upgrade, post here - lots of folks including myself will help you get through it.

Any advice would be appreciated. Somewhere in the past I was able to do this with the 8125 and this computer--something has happened along the way with ROM updates.
Thanks

Why would I want to enable "G" mode on my phone if that is what is supposedly causing these WiFi troubles in the first place?
i provided the link so that you may be able to uncheck it and be able to connect.

Regarding WiFi troubles and the 8125, there was a known issue with the way WiFi and the MediaNET Proxy were configured in the original Cingular ROM (from day one). The fix helped greatly then. I'm providing the fix (from a brick and mortar Cingular rep) below as, while I had hoped they would have corrected this with an updated ROM, they may not have.
Hope this helps:
Before you start there is one thing I found. By configuring Wi-Fi this way you cannot have access to MEdia Net services (device.home page) because you will be removing the proxy server settings. Remember, factory defaults can be found at http://www.cingular.com/customer_service/phones_devices
1)Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks
Change both the "Internet" and "private network" to MEdia Net
2)press "Edit" on the "private network" tab and select "Auto pick" under the "modem" tab
3)select the "Proxy Settings" tab and unselect the second box (keep the first box selected)
4)under Settings > Connections > select "Network Cards" and the "Wireless" tab. If you have tried to do a Wi-Fi connections previously you will see the connection name. Make sure that it is set to "Connects To the Internet" and not "Work"
By following these steps exactly you will be able to connect to both Wi-Fi and EDGE. Please let me know that everything is functioning correctly.

Summinter is the shiznit! Why WHY would cingular/HTC post this upgrade without the bluetooth stero support, c'mon now, REALLY! Summinter seems to have this down, since upgrading to "his" ROM my divice works REALLY well. There is no way I would even consider goig with a standardized ROM from HTC. This is my second upgrade of his and I think he understands what the consumer "geek" wants in a mobile device. After reading everything posted on Cingular's site and XDA's site... Whatever, I will continue to support this forum as the place for knowlege and the latest and GREATEST ROM's available. Thanks Summinter, I appreciate and support your work!

I suggest you take some time and do some reading. The original leaked ROM does not have A2DP built in. You used Summiter's ROM and Summiter's ROM has A2DP because it was part of the customization he put in. Summiter's ROMs are custom variations of ROMs, not Cingular's leaked versions...those would belong to Cingular.

just the Official Cingular 2.25 Rom defaults to MYISP which has no proxy and if you don't have the pda plan you will get charged per kb. even if you have unlimited MediaNet. So just change it to MediaNet and you will have your proxy settings back.

My 8125 fresh from the upgrade does not have have any mention of ISP.CINGULAR in it. Fresh from the ROM Update, I had two network connections set up for me. 'My ISP' configured to WAP.CINGULAR and 'MEdia Net' also with WAP.CINGULAR but with the Proxy set.
The proxy settings aren't gone, they're just in a slightly different place.
Start->Settings->Connections Tab -> Advanced Tab -> Select Networks.
If you then select 'MEdia Net' from the drop down, the Proxy settings are accessed there.
I have had absolutely no WiFi problems (Netgear 802.11g router, connected with B) and I really like the new connection manager screen. I know that others are having problems, but my 8125 is working extremely well now. Very snappy responses and haven't had any lock-ups yet, and usually I was having to reset two or three times a day. Activesync is working as it should, as is push email on my free mail2web account. I don't have a stereo bluetooth headset so I can't comment on if that's in the ROM or not.

Ok, I've been running this "official" release since it was leaked here a couple of weeks ago. Just within the past couple of days, I've noticed that the GPRS/Edge Icon has changed. Previously, it would show the G/E with two arrows when it was connected. Now it only shows the G/E box even when it is connected. I have to tap on the icon to see if I'm connected or not. I haven't changed anything on the phone except to delete a few system photos that I don't need/want. Anyone else have this happen? Thanks

I had that happen initially as well. For some reason, I don't see it anymore (I see the 'E' with the two arrows). I don't see how this is possible, but it MAY have something to do with whether you use the 'Media NET' or the 'My ISP' connection. I'm using the 'My ISP' network now, although I renamed it to 'Cingular'.

i think this one is slower... I had the summiter rom on my 8125 before and i think its faster. When i use SPB PLUS and change my themes it takes almost a minute for them to switch and take a good chunk of time when i go into landscape mode. I dunno... and i work for government so i can't use a personal phone with the push stuff. Is the Radio in the Summiter version the same radio?

ok bad news (for me anyway) Ive tested for drop calls and they are still there  however I did not install much in the extended rom, so Ive hard reset and install everything to see if that makes a difference.Ok Ive hard reset and installed everything from the extended rom and Im still getting dropped calls so its time to flash back to qtek 2.17 from me :(
BUGGER! :(
ratcom, the dropped calls you were experiencing w/ the HTC ROM as well as the summiter's, were these intermitent, or was every call dropping after 4 minutes or so? I've read through the AKU 2.3 thread and have seen others experiencing this issue, but I've had the ROM (TEST 2) now for over a week, and have not experienced this problem. At least it has been impossible for me to reproduce. I've even listened to over 45 minutes of that Cingular voice connect dribble with no drop.
I have had the dropped calls issue and I really think it is related to any app that is trying to initiate an internet socket connection and thus is trying to make the GPRS dialer dial. I was on a call and launched WMIRC, and bam the call dropped when I saw it trying to dial.
I have also noticed that when I am on the phone any GPRS apps that I had running before my call get disconnected. Is this normal GPRS/GSM operation, or is this a ROM issue or something elsE??
foxbat121
21st June 2006, 12:36 AM
It could be both. First of all, you can only GPRS or voice at any time. Not both. So this is GSM limitation. Secondly, if you're already on GPRS or voice, the other connection should just fail and not interrupt current connections. When you have dropped calls, it means somehow the ROM didn't handle this situation correctly.
BTW, by GPRS connection, I mean actually trasnfer data not just connected.

Is there any way we can ensure that a data call will not kill a phone call, like a registry setting? This was not a problem in the 2.17 roms and below, I wonder what changed.

Love to find a solution as this is driving me nuts whenever I shut the phone off (power down) or perform a reset. Perhaps I should re-flash the unit? I also experienced this issue with 2.17.

ok everything went well with the flash .......
now showing .....
OS 5.1.195 (build 14928.2.2.0)
It seem as quick as Summiter Custom ROM.......
Give me a hour and I'll test to see if the call dropping is still there ;)
Oh BTW I'll upload both the rom and extended rom to the ftp
It's already in the ROMs directory under "Other_Unknown"..has been since it leaked. =)
So Summiter... what is your final verdict, O sage and wise Wizard ROM Wizard? Should we even bother downloading this ROM? Are you going to hack it?
If the radio in it stinks, I'll put the 2.25 radio all up in that bad boy.
so then when might we expect the "Cingular_RUU_Wizard_AKU2.3_Custom_RNG_THM_A2DP_TES T2" upgraded with the favorable additions given to us from Cingulars most recent release "RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship" (ie. the time zone fix, etc.)???
P.S. after reading several of your helpful posts & comparing your rom with a few others I conclude that you are WISE & BENEVOLENT and worthy of great praise.

The leaked 2.25 and official 2.25 is the exact same ROM file. Current AKU2.3 custom ROM is based on AKU2.3 OS and 2.25 Radio ROM and 2.25 carrier customization. There is no need to release another ROM based on official 2.25 as nothing has changed.

A custom version of the Official Rom is still a Custom Rom and WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

not sure what you tried but do this..
First put the phone into bootloader mode (took out the battery, put it back in again, pressed and held camera button and powered on)
you will see the multicolored screen
it will show the usb icon in the bottom right even though active sync doesnt kick it on .. you then need to CID unlock your phone and go backwards with the roms install the cingular ship rom..

9/10 times its the USB cable, the other tenth I've seen it as a USB hardware problem. In either event, your local Radio Shack should be able to help you out with solving the problem. The cable (260-0176) is about $20, and a replacement internal USB card (250-3221) which is in few stores, but at a steal for also $20 (so if the cable doesn't work, return/exchange it for the USB card). One of these solutions should solve your problem.
A free method you can attempt is deleting ALL the USB root hub in your device listing, restarting your computer, and allowing it to re-setup all the USB root hub information again. Perhaps you got something missing, or pointing to a wrong hardware address. We all know how winblows blows... =)

I tried this. I did a SPB backup, updated the ROM, and did a full restore. I ended up with a toasted phone. I had to find a link here (I love this site) to the origional stock rom and restored to that, then restored my SPB backup and I was up and running.
I just noticed that after converting back, the SPL still shows 2.25 I wonder if this is a good thing or a bad thing?

So are you guys saying, since this new rom version doesn't support AD2P, I should consider installing Summitters custom AKU 2.3 rom.
My 2 cents.... I have A2DP working on my 8125/2.25. I've upgraded to the latest 2.25 rom not woried about unlocking either... So far I have not had any problems with performance, connections, or network functions. Here is the link of what I did....
