what is the cheapest BT GPS unit that can be used with an HTC Alpine?
What are the differences between GPS units? What are their faults/incompletenesses/shortcomings/drawbacks/faults? :)

Any bluetooth gps device will work but I personally would not go for a cheap one (unless it is good one cheap  ) Some cheap ones are slow to update the map and you end up on the turning with little warning go for a sirf 3 unit the more channels the better.I have got a 20 channel sirf 3 and its excellent even works in the house! :)

Uhmm. So which one should I prefer?
How should I choose the right BT GPS device?
Can all devices work with all map softwares (like navturk/smart2go and tomtom)?

Try this link it is the same as mine

It will work on Tomtom and see no reason it wont work on all bluetooth gps software or bluetooth ppc phones.

I have a TomTom GPSII (SiRF III) receiver and it works very well with my XDAIIi, Dell Axim X51v and Nokia 6820. They aren't the cheapest but it has been very reliable over the past 5 months.
BTW although you can get SiRF receivers with 20 channels they are of no use at present - only 12 (possibly 13 GPS satellites) are ever visible at once. I usually see 9-10 here in the UK and my positional fix is usually very good indeed.

What about SiRF II/Xtrac and SiRF GSC2 devices? I see that people tend to choose SiRF III chipsetted devices mostly. Am I correct?

I'm using this one:-

Which is pretty good and decently priced.
