Registry searches yield no clue as to what is calling this pesky executable on startup. No traces of it that I can find in the \Windows\Startup folder either. Cannot rename, move or delete the EXE because it is in ROM.
How can I keep this program from loading on startup?

You can check your notification queue.
Worst case, you can replace it with some other EXE. As it is in the ROM, you cannot rename or delete it. However, if you copy another EXE (say an EXE application that you want to run upon start up) over it, the OS will see two file with the same file name. It will give priority to the file in the memory (e.g. the one not in the ROM).

Thanks! This did the trick! I copied \Windows\Startup\custTDYTSK.exe and renamed it to PowerTray.exe. I then moved it to \Windows. Now the battery icon has been finally vanquished!
I chose custTDYTSK.exe since it appears to start, do its thing, and then commits seppuku, but I am not quite sure of what it does, exactly. Sounds to me like some kind of theme app?
