I'm planning on purchasing a Hermes next month and wondering if its worth getting the unlimitted data plan.
I"m a college student so no need for emediate connection to email or anythign business wise, basicly internet leisure.
So whats your advice, is it worth being connected 24/7? Will the battery hold? My brother has the nokia N80 in the middle east and he tells me that phone doesn't last half a day with 3g on, how about the hermes?
Also a main motivation for 3g for me is the video calling, but i don't know much about that, is it a device to device connection or does cingular need to set something up for it to work?(even if it is device to device, none of my friends have 3g so i see its 40 bucks to waste.) Any thoughts would be good
thanks

I am currently on Cingular with the TyTn and get a UMTS singal in my area about half the time I use it. I have the internet connection registry dealy set to always on, and i don't have any trouble with the battery.
Also a main motivation for 3g for me is the video calling, but i don't know much about that, is it a device to device connection or does cingular need to set something up for it to work?
I was curious about this also.
i see its 40 bucks to waste.

EVEN BETTER!!!
how come i never saw these before? i've been with cingular over 2 years now and i thought all they had was the unlimited data for 39.99 and the media works for 19.99 which only included 5mb. I used to have media works with my jam and i kept going over 5 MB and the messages allowed and i was hitting $60 to $80 in overages.
Thanks again, will definately subscribe to this plan in the next 3 days and use it with my wizard till i get the TyTn some time next month
Thanks again!

Hello All,
I am visiting Chicago and using my Tytn. The device rocks like no other. King of the kings basically when it comes to UMTS in Chicago. It is registering a speed of 2.04 mbps when I test the connection.

I can't wait till i get a hold of one!!
About the data plans, I just subscribed to the MEdia Max 1000 for $29.99 but whats the between that and Unlimited Data Access for PDA which is $39.99? When i click on it the explanation pop is blank.
I'm not complaining that MEdia Max 1000 is cheaper but are they gonna try to shaft me by saying I have a PDA and start billing me for KiloBytes? Or with the media net can i only access MEdia Net sites?

@nickcerda:
So many questions.... so little time.....
Ok, you are accessing UMTS on Cingular with a standard SIM? If so this is good news because our rep was feeding me a line that a new "3G SIM" would be required to access UMTS.
I take it wap.cingular and/or isp.cingular are visible and can be connected to over UMTS correct? If so, which one are you using?

Yes, you need the new 3G sim to access 3G, But the sim is free. Just go to any cingular store and tell them u need the 3g sim and they'll give it to and it takes about 5 min for it to activate.

It goes like this. wap.cingualr (media net) uses some form of compression and there is some problem with vpn's or something. isp.cingular (data connect or pda plan) loses the compression, and the vpn problem. I believe the problem comes in with the type of IP they assign. Technically you should be on PDA plan with a PDA, however my current phone according to Cingular is the 8125, and i still have the media net plan. in fact I bought my 8125 directly from Cingular. But I guess to answer your question as long as you don't use the isp.cingular you'll be fine. And for the record I have used both the compression does nothing at all to speed.

agreed, compression is worthless but....
did you get a 3G SIM from Cingular to run in your TyTN?

nickcerda: thanks for that info. so browsing sites like this isn't gonna be charged per kb? i just don't want them to be charging me when i've got the media max 1000
sleuth255: i don't have a TyTN but i do have the 3G simcard, i just went into a cingular shop and asked them for it and was out of there in 5 min.

Actually, I gotta find out if it has A2DP first. TCPMP -> my iPAQ stereo headset is one of the most used apps on my 8125. I can't go back to wired... especially given the TyTN's non-standard connector...
With UMTS shoutcast should fly!

Yes I do have a 3g sim card. And like I said as long as you use the wap.cingular apn you will not be charged per kilobyte.

@nickcerda:
Tks for the info! My account can use wap or isp so it isn't an issue. I'm off to locate a 3G sim.
One more quick question (I already owe you a beer btw)
If you have a registry editor could you check to see if the following keys exist on your TyTN:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Bluetooth/A2DP
and
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Bluetooth/AudioGateway

Indeed they do.

Well, the 3G SIM update was indeed a 5min operation at my local Cingular store. Cost was $26US. My TyTN is now on its way! Also: my sources indicate that Cingular will introduce a branded TyTN in Q3/Q4 as an 8125 update. While the name is unknown at this time, he read the specs off and there was no mistaking it (the Samsung Processor, dual camera and jog wheel is a dead giveaway).
Now to find a reasonably priced 2GB microSD.....

Sleuth. Never, never pay for SIM cards. Most any legitimate Cingular store will give you a new sim and activate it for you. I have a couple spare 3G SIMs that I could have sent you. I probably could have even got it activated for you. If they try to charge you for it just say that you purchased your phone there, or that you will take your future business elsewhere. The only time I'd charge for a SIM card was if I was doing an unlock for a customer and needed a new sim plus activation at the same time. It's just a bad business practice to suck as much money out of a customer as possible. They won't come back when they are up for a contract renewal and that's where the $ is at.

Yeah, I'm on a corp account though and free meant a few days. The TyTNs were going like hotcakes and I needed to be sure I'd be set up. I was a bit surprised by the charge myself though.
also: Yikes! Verizon's got the exclusive on 2GB microSD! WTF??

Verizon and, as always, ebay.
