Since Xelencin is leaving us, I'm starting a thread to figure out what the T-Mobile customizations do, so that we can figure out which ones we would like to have on our devices. Then, by extracting the extended_rom with Total Commander, one can just install the desired ones and not others. This is really the cleanest way.
Here is the complete list:
AutoRun.exe (104KB) Program to automatically install
Config.txt (2KB) List of contents of extended_rom, probably part of autorun.exe
cusTSK.exe (6KB) Installs T-Mobile Theme (\Windows\T-Mobile.tsk) This can probably be used to install any theme.
Enable_NTIZ_.cab (2KB) Network time enable
MP_Customization_TMOUSA_Wizard(AKU2.x)_060615_noJa va.CAB (58KB) Configures ArcSoft MMS
MP_CVSDcpl_20060220.cab (96KB) voicetagcpl.cpl

NITZ - Network time enable.
P_EDGE - does NOT enable EDGE Icon. It puts the second icon up above the bars instead of the antenna. You still need to regedit if you want the "E" differentiation.

I'm still using Xelencin's extended rom (with 2.26), nothing from the 2.26; I'm waiting to figure out what all these things are before trying to construct a superior set of customizations to his.
If you have Winrar, you can open each can and see if there's a _setup.xml file. If so, use the built-in viewer to see what they do. Most of them are commented but some you can just look at the file and get an idea of what it installs or what settings it adds/sets.

Hesh You sound like you have already been messing with em. Please help us and post some of your findings for us. That way we wont be repeating the same thing all the time.

I went through most of the mysterious ones and was able to figure out some of them, enough so that I am going to try a Mr. Clean T-Mo when I get the time.
Here is my plan:
MP_CVSDcpl_20060220.cab (96KB) (voicetagcpl.cpl)
MP_SmartDialing_enable_0915_signed.CAB (76KB) (Enable smart dialing)
MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB (72KB) Adds MMS Inbox, Voice Tag control panel, Voice Dialing startup shortcut, ClearVue PDF shortcut, MIDlet Manager shortcut, Voice Speed Dial shortcut.
P_Other_Conn_Settings.CAB (4KB) GPRS, SMS registry settings
P_SecurityPolicy.CAB (73KB)
PP_GPRSandEGDE_DTMF.CAB (71KB) Fix for DTMF tone dialing problem?, sets EnableDTMFSupport and different edge, GPRS icons
Signed_wispa_ppc_release.CAB (173KB) Hotspot manager
TMOUS_Camera_Profile_reg_0414_signed.CAB (71KB) camera update
and these from Xelencin:
Certification_Disable.cab (71KB) - Disables certification requirement for cab installers.
Registry_Tweaks_2.5.cab (2KB) - Disable GPRS Disconnect Button, Disable Menu Animation, Disable Message Sent Notification, Disable Roaming Indicator, Enable 802.11G, Enable Cleartype in Landscape Mode, Enable Different GPRS/EDGE Icon, Enable IE background sounds, Enable Indicator (Caps/Dot), Store IE cache on Storage Card. *Can be uninstalled.

Well it looks like prestonmcafee already has them pretty much documented. The only thing I think is wrong is the cusTSK.exe. I think that's just an app to launch tasks. If you look at the config.txt, it runs T-Mobile.tsk. I'm not sure what this is and I'm not ready to try it yet ;)
As far as the unknown ones go, there's no .xml file to view so it's basically a crap shoot as to what they do. Too bad they don't name these cabs things that actually make sense
For those interested, I've pulled files from both the T-Mobile and Summiter's Extended ROMs to get what I need at the bare minimum. Here's the file and a description of the cabs. These are the only cabs I've loaded from the extended ROMs so far and I'm quite happy with them.
P_Conn_CWS_APR12_Wizard.cab <-- Cingular's network/GPRS settings
P_DefaultHtm_Favorite_Feb13_Wizard.CAB <-- Cingular's favorites and default homepage
P_Edge_Icon.sa.CAB <-- Edge Icon over the signal strength (T-Mobile)
P_PIE_View_Setting.CAB <-- Cingular's IE settings
P_REG_Wiz_Cingular_Mar02.cab <-- Cingular Inbox settings
P_RingTone_Wiz_Cingular_Feb13.CAB <-- Cingular ringtones
Signed_OZPocketPC.Cab <-- Oz IM client for T-Mobile (though I haven't figured out how to get it to work on Cingular's network or wifi, I ended up installing Agile Messenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/downloads.html) instead)
Summ.cab <-- Useful reghacks from Summiter's cooked Cingular ROM. Includes:
[list:329e81587e]Enable Indicator
Enable 802.11g
Disable SMS message sent notification
Disable Start Menu animation
Enable Cleartype in Landscape mode[/list:u:329e81587e]

So I installed the minimal T-Mobile extended ROM, at least minimal for me, without MMS, WAP or IM stuff, but with T-Mobile Hotspots since I use them. I kept three files from Xelencin
MP_CVSDcpl_20060220.cab (96KB)
MP_SmartDialing_enable_0915_signed.CAB (76KB)
MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB (72KB)
P_Other_Conn_Settings.CAB (4KB) GPRS, SMS registry settings
P_SecurityPolicy.CAB (73KB)
PP_GPRSandEGDE_DTMF.CAB (71KB) dialtone fix?
Signed_wispa_ppc_release.CAB (173KB) Hotspot manager
TMOUS_Camera_Profile_reg_0414_signed.CAB (71KB) camera updater
Certification_Disable.cab (71KB)
Registry_Tweaks_2.5.cab (2KB)
Total_Commander.cab (394KB)
So far, the only negative is that I can't figure out how to remove Comm Manager from the tray; the old fix (eliminating init_tray in Startup) eliminates the battery symbol but not Comm Manager. This comm manager icon changes color when you are connected to activesync or wifi.
All the regular stuff I use seems to work, so far. The MDA seems a bit more zippy, but that could be wishful thinking.
I've posted this extended ROM at
http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/MDA/Extended_Rom.zip
Note that it doesn't run itself; you have to interrupt the customization of the 2.26 ROM by a soft reset with the stylus during the 3 second warning, then copy each of the programs in this ROM to the minisd (or whereever you like) and run them.

i read else where that you would have to uninstall the hotspot utility program, for the tray icon to go away. (my suggestion, i dont know that much but try using one from an old build.)
Thanks for the extended cab. now i can get things back to normal.

It could very well be the Hotspot utitlity that makes it appear. I did not install it and I only have the battery icon in my tray.

PLease what is the size limit for the extended rom. I am trying to make mine so that i can flash it to my vario. I dont want nothing to wrong.
Thanks a whole lot.
i also read somewhere that you can use the extended rom to pack (store cabs) so that incase you need to do a hard reset. Your popular programs can be restored easily.
prestonmcafee
01-08-2006, 06:31 PM
Actually, the extended ROM has no relevant size limit -- it is just a set of programs in ROM that you can choose to install or not when you are doing a hard reset. When you flash your ROM with the new operating system, it includes these additional programs in ROM; you don't get to choose unless you build another flasher. What this thread is about is choosing not to install all the programs T-Mobile would like you to install; this has the advantage of leaving you more regular memory and having fewer running programs, as well as avoiding T-Mobile's ugly phone screen. T-Mobile's programs will still reside in ROM, unavailable since they weren't installed.
In case I'm not being clear, the point is that the extended ROM contains programs that install just like any other programs; you can install them either from the extended rom or directly by copying the cab file to your device. There is no difference, except that the latter procedure lets you choose not to install some of them; installing from extended ROM is an all or none approach.
With that said, there are some people who try to use the ROM (read only memory) to store something else but your question suggests you aren't one of them. I'm not either; that is an arcane subject. And Xelencin created his own flasher so that he picked what went into extended ROM; that is beyond my current ability. But my approach -- use 2.26, then install a subset of the extended ROM programs -- has precisely the same result as his, but is more labor intensive.

I have tested pretty thoroughly now and still have no problems with my subset.
Thanks for the insight about the Hotspot utility; I could roll back to the previous one, but for now I'll suffer the icon. I have only one spot on the tray left, though.

Trust me Xelecin is not leaving us. He's just reading and reading and do his works. Please be patient guys... :)
Xelecin: I'm waiting for your extended ROM. I know you're working on it...Let me know if you need help

Thank you so much for your reply.
Ok here is what i did. I started out not wanting to install all the carbage that t-mobile makes you install. Then i got the thinking that. Even if u dont install everything, you have waisted space. the stuff you dont install (the cabs) just reside in the extended rom. (not sure but heared you cant mess with the extended rom on the vario itself). So did my research and decided to do some rom cooking. I thought it was hard at first, but in the time i put my first post today, which was about 1 hour ago, i learnt all i need to know and did it too.
Now in my extended rom i dont have the crap that i dont need, I have all i need and so the next time i do a hard reset, i let the extended rom autoupdate do its thing cause it only installs what i want it too.
Now for key programs like spb pocket e.t.c i wanted them to auto install too so that i wont have to hassle my self to do them mannually.
any ways here is what i did.
I put prestonmcafee specs for the 2.6 with all of Xelencin recomended cabs together, then made a flashable extended rom of em

I'm interested to know how you did that. But you might want to redo it for the following reason. You have both duplicate programs and not the latest programs present. For example,
MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB
is the update to Xelencin's Missing_Shortcuts.cab; he changed the names to make them more memorable.
In addition, Xelencin's Smart_Dialing_Enable.cab is the older version of
MP_SmartDialing_enable_0915_signed.CAB
Finally, Xelencin included T-Mobile MyEmail, which I didn't, but there is a new version of that, which I think is
P_tmobile_email_notification_2005PPC_NET_rom.CAB
It is about the same size and dated 2005 so you might as well stick with the old version.
My strategy was to try to use only new T-Mobile customizations, but include the Xelencin's other choices.
Can you point me to where you learned to flash the extended rom? Does it autorun?
I'd be pretty keen to include smartskey, Todayagenda, batterystatus, mortsaver, PHM_Traylaunch, spbweather, and skschema. I would also like to know how to create shortcuts automatically, so that the shortcuts just appear in the right place. Do you know how to do this?

But the whole process is very easy. Just always double check your settings and also make sure that all the files are read only. to do that right click on all the files in the win image app and select read only from the properties menu (i told you i suck at explaining)
dont hesitate to ask any questions i check this thread like every 30 mins.
Do you know if its ok to put commercial stuff in em for a release here. ( example putting like spb pocket plus in the extended rom and then realeasing that here )

It was really easy.
here is the link to the tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=54563&highlight=cook+extendedroom

i was also thinking if you havent already read this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088
it would help you understand the whole thing (assuming you dont, no offence)
Yeah and this one too

I don't think putting SPB pocket plus is going to violate any copyright unless you put your registration code out as well. The program is already available for download. But they might disagree, I don't know.
Personally, I used SPB PP and found it had too much overhead for what I got out of it. I like TodayAgenda instead. But I do use their backup and weather programs.
Thanks for the links; I had searched and came up with several that made me nervous, not least because they were old. I'm reasonably happy with my folder on my miniSD with all the programs I need in one spot, but I often find tweaking enjoyable, and one of these days I will change out the first splash screen.
I'm not sure I gave you a complete list of duplications; I in the end only used the non-T-Mobile programs from Xelencin:
Certification_Disable.cab (71KB)
Registry_Tweaks_2.5.cab (2KB)
Total_Commander.cab (394KB)
The others were from the 2.26 ROM. That way, everything is current. What you might do is install my stripped down version plus other programs you know you want, but have the others on the miniSD; then if you find you are missing something or something doesn't work right, you can add it. So far I haven't found any myself.

Trust me Xelecin is not leaving us. He's just reading and reading and do his works. Please be patient guys... :)
Xelencin is giving up his MDA, and presumably his prodigious talents are better spent on hacking the Sidekick. Meanwhile moyofalaye isn't very far away from producing the Xelencin 2.26!

Find this word: "Make WM5 keep CAB files around after installing" without the quotes at this link (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other/url) and you can make registry hacks. Hope you will be the next Xelencin

Or you can individually set them to be read-only, which I understand will prevent deletion (but I haven't tested that). Personally, I copy the whole folder to My Documents and run it from there.

Download "cabinstl". It will allow you to install the cabs without deleting them.

The cheapest way to prevent the OS from deleting the CAB files is to make them READ ONLY!! 8)

I've posted the 2.26 cabs at
http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/MDA/226_extended_rom.zip
I think you need
MP_Customization_TMOUSA_Wizard(AKU2.x)_060615_noJa va.CAB
MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB
P_Generic_Conn_Settings.CAB
and maybe
UXC_WWE_20051020.cab
I would try the first three and see if they enable full MMS functionality, but if not, add UXC. We aren't 100% sure of what does what in this cab; if you figure it out, post the answer.
Note: if the problem is that you don't have the full list of inbox, sent-mail, etc. that is a separate problem that often requires a hard reset.

Thanks everyone for your help.
Ok i am not the smartest person around. If i do decide to make a full release like Xelecin, i'm gonna need all the help i can get. as you can see i only came here in July.
I don't want to be responsible for mass brickage.
OK here is my plan i will soon be done on perfecting the extended ROM for the 2.26, i will like y'all to suggest the best registry hacks, for the wizard, so i can include them in the extended cab. that way when you upgrade next time you wont have to do all that manually. and also what cabs should be standard(total commander has been made a necessary include)
Second of all i need to research how to make so programs appear in the OS without putting them in the extended cab( like Xelecin, he was able to put totalcommander in the OS, without putting it in the extended rom)
thirdly, cause i am trying to leave all doors open, i was thinking that maybe i should start releasing just extended rom auto install first. (Extend ROM installs, can never brick your wizard so its always safe).
when i have gained enough experience then i would release a whole upgrade.
what do you guys think.

Xelencin used the extended rom -- that is where I got those programs. I had installed Xelencin's 2.24 T-Mobile ROM, and then used total commander to copy all the files from his extended ROM. I don't think he did anything to the OS and I advise you not to, as well.
The idea is to take 2.26 and *only* change the extended rom. This will prevent brick issues because even if the extended rom is corrupted, it is possible to prevent the install of the extended rom.
The other freely available programs I would suggest are smartskey with overclock, batterystatus, and PHM_traylaunch. These have a tiny footprint and are immensely useful.
Xelencin used a trick of putting a folder of stuff that didn't run automatically, but which could be recovered with TC, for people who wanted additional functionality. This is also a good idea, although it requires more user input. OZ and Hotspots were there.

then that means The headeache of playing with the os, is out of the way.
With the folder in the extended rom, yeah i have already messed with that.
I can safely say now that i am confident on releasing something. I just now need user input on what they want.
As soon as i get enough I will release one. as for me i already made one for my self, im enjoying it and i hope to add more stuff too it.

The extended rom in this one is not really any different than the 2.24 rom, so it shouldn't take very long for me to strip it down. Do you guys think I should even bother including any of the T-Mobile IE customizations such as the default homepage etc?

I would rather you didn't include carrier specific items in the extended rom as this will open it up to a larger audience without having to re-configure / delete items.
It is easy enough to find the cabs for each carrier to customise your device after the extended rom has been installed.

I remain happy with the programs I chose, listed on the first page of this thread. I don't use the PIE stuff.
I admired your strategy of putting OZ and Hotspots in a separate folder and in fact installed Hotspots from that. But at the same time, what got me to try it in the first place is the fact that it would work with T-Mobile right out of the box. As there is a separate Cingular customization effort, and a Mr. Clean effort, it seems to me that the minimal T-Mobile customization, plus a folder of "additional functionality" that includes not just Oz and Hotspots but PIE customizations, MMS, ringer, phoneskin, etc., let the user decide. Including TC was brilliant.
I'd also suggest including omapclock, smartskey and batterystatus. These have a minimal footprint and great functionality gain.
It would really be nice to run programs from the extended rom -- all tha space we've gained just sits idle. Better still if we could run something large. But it would have to be stable programs, since one wouldn't want to reflash every time there is an update.
Finally, Bebbo is right that a Mr. Clean version would be popular.

I agree completely. It would be great to have the T-mobile minimal functionality, important tweaks, right out the chute, etc. I also like the idea of a folder with the "extra" stuff that can be installed later.
Other things (even smartskey and omapclock) are more prone to upgrade but doesn't hurt to put them in with the "extras" I guess. I know a new version of TC came out after the last ROM you did which wasn't a big deal, but had to uninstall the old one and reinstall the new one.
Finally, thanks for your work on this, Mr X-man sir. I used both your custom 2.24 and 2.17 with great success. I'm looking forward to 2.26!!

after installing this rom my HT820 bluetooth headset commands such as pause and chnage the song only work on windows media player. Can anybody give directions on what to do so I can make it work with other programs? It was working perfectly before.
