View Full Version : SetHSDPA.zip -- anyone tried it?
I found this file on ftp:
ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Hermes/SetHSDPA.zip
I don't know who uploaded it and where is it from (probably an ExtROM).
I used cabextract and strings commands to see what's in there, it seems released by HTC, as it contains this string, very similar to others found on other HTC binaries:
d:\My Documents\HTC\Proj\Hermes\SetHSDPA\Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK (ARMV4 I)\Release\SetHSDPA.pdb
Anyone tried it? Is it really working? Is there more info about this I am missing?... thanks!

Oh yeah, pof !
Also just discovered it on the ftp.
Mystification or leeched from a HTC server ?
The exe won't run on the PDA, but what should it do if run on a PC ?
On the one hand I keep away from trying out dubious software on the PC (won't catch me one of those tricky rootkit trojans or the like).
On the other hand you can also find information on this code here:
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/kyunga/20060707
and here
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/kyunga/20060720
Only problem is:
I do not understand Japanese...
But I'm sure someone here can read this and can report what our friends far away in Japan might have found out :)
[Calling for xda-dev members from Japan !]
Also I'd be interested in finding out what it does as I always "only" get very good UMTS speed with my HTC here, though HSDPA is there (checked with one of those Mobile Connect Data Cards).
So my TyTN is either not (yet) HSDPA enabled or somehow it is unable to "understand" the encoding from the network here and falls back to UMTS.
Interesting anyway, but I'm sure we will find out about it soon.

You have to run the .lnk file, not the .exe file, this is what it does: SetHSDPA.exe /Enable

Yes, I am original writer of those articles in my blog :)
20060707 is written about SetHSDPA.exe option, and 20060720 is about English ROM for Dopod CHT9000 (actually for Dopod 838 Pro that just released in Singapore).
I guess SetHSDPA.exe is in the ROM of all HTC hermes devices. The "SetHSDPA.exe /enable" or "SetHSDPA.exe /disable" is described on PreAutoRun.txt file in \Windows folder of Hermes, and be executed it at the first (or hard reset) initializing process of device(before AutoRun from Extended_ROM).
You can check whether HSDPA of your device is enabled or disabled through open the \Windows\PreAutoRun.txt. At least in case of CHT9000, HSDPA is enabled by default.
Regarding the SetHSDPA.zip on the FTP, I guess a Japanese guy (NOT me) has uploaded it, because I saw a post about uploading this file in a Japanese BBS yesterday.
In Japan, NTT DoCoMo (the largest mobile phone service provider in Japan) has started to ship Japanese version of Hermes under the "hTc Z" name from end of last month. hTc Z have also SetHSDPA.exe in the ROM, however it has DISABLED by default, because still DoCoMo has not started HSDPA service on their UMTS network (branded as "FOMA") yet. I heard it will be started end of this month or early September.
So I guess the Japanese poster of this file has copied it from his or her CHT9000, and post into the FTP with /enable shortcut (.lnk).

Yes you're right, I've checked on my TyTN and SetHSDPA is in \Windows folder and called from PreConfig.txt file (not PreAutoRun.txt).
There is some other interesting stuff on that file also ;)
Many thanks for your clear explanation, I posted the details to wiki (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Utils) :D

My V1605 shows "disable" in preconfig.txt. Phoned customer support at VF business and was told that this was correct as they are currently only supporting HSDPA on data cards. At this time it is not clear if/when this may change! This is totally different to what I was told when I ordered it.
Since I got my t-mob data card at the weekend I thought the V1605 was slow.
The sethsdpa.ink will not run on my device so I assume it is a first boot only thing, if not somebody please tell me how to make it run!

just put .exe and .lnk in the same folder, and click on .lnk. Nothing is displayed on the screen (as it is intended to run at boot time, and you don't want to see popups when booting), but HSDPA is then enabled.

"The file 'SetHSDPA.exe /Enable' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file."
Please help :) Just got a data card and I now realise how much faster HSDPA is and want it for my mobile surfing.

You need only the .lnk File.

Hi Frank,
Just want to know, does your ISP HSDPA can make voice call? Per HK smartone vodaphone said 3.5 G HSDPA service has no voice channel!!! What else solutions can help? SKYPE (really stupid for a phone to use SKYPE to make calls) or dual Number SIM card? Does a dual chips SIM card can support both 2G and 3.5G at the same card?
Thanks,

You can call this feature also by its technical name if you want.
It's called Multi-RAB (RAB stands for Radio Access Bearer) and is specified in 3GPP TS 34.123.
It is not universally offered by HSDPA operators but the standard allows support of both bearers simultaneously (with reduced data rates).

OK, I've tried this.
I copied the .lnk from the FTP download into \Windows. I already had SetHSDPA.exe in there, so didn't copy that over. I then clicked on the .lnk and nothing happened, as expected. Is there anything else I need to do or is there any way I can check it has worked? I don't know whether I'm in a HSDPA coverage area or not...
I checked the PreConfig.txt file and it still says "EXEC: \Windows\SetHSDPA.exe /Disable"...
HSDPA will be enabled until you softreset the device.
If you want to enable it everytime you softreset, click on the link again or put it in your startup folder (edit the .lnk file with a text editor and put the full path to SetHSDPA.exe).
HSDPA depends on provider, some providers still don't have it, and some you have to request the customer service to enable it for you.
Note: You won't be able to edit PreConfig.txt as it is a rom file.

Thanks for this - I've changed the shortcut to \Windows\SetHSDPA.exe and put it into my Start Up folder. I'll be in Glasgow later today, one of the first places to get VF "3G Broadband" (HSDPA), so I'll do some data speed tests and let you know how fast it really is!

I think there may be an error in the .lnk file on the ftp. The contents of the file is:
31#"SetHSDPA.exe /Enable"
but from looking at the construction of other .lnk files, I think the /Enable switch should be outside the quotes, ie:
31#"SetHSDPA.exe" /Enable
I was getting a file not found error when I soft reset and had the file in my startup folder. I changed it to the following and now get no error on soft reset:
31#"\Windows\SetHSDPA.exe" /Enable
I also noticed that the icon changes to an application shortcut icon, rather than the previousl unknown filetype. Can anyone confirm if the above is correct and the .lnk file is wrong? If so, here's a corrected file, with the path also changed so that it can be saved to the StartUp folder:

For most of us it is enabled by default, in \windows\PreConfig.txt so we don't have to change anything.

I agree, but if you look at the different postings, there are many who claim they had better speed performance after they executed the .lnk file. I always wondered how they could do it because others like me got the error message. now the problem seems to be clear.

I have tried Vodafone and Amena with the TyTN, only been able to achieve HSDPA speeds with Vodafone in certain parts of Barcelona (good place to test is "Fira de Barcelona", the place where 3GSM was last february).
Keep in mind that HTC Universal only suports UMTS, but not HSDPA, you won't be getting more than 384/kbps in theory.

I'm getting the same here. Every now and again blistering speeds, but most often 200 kbps or nearby. dslreports.com is not the problem, because when I try the same using wi-fi, I get 1400+kbps regularly. maybe network service providers are somehow witholding bandwidth from us as there are now so many good data tarrifs i.e. Unlimited Web&Walk! 8)

Or could it be a faulty mobile? there are some people with mobiles that wont connect to the internet while on 3G, so this could as well be hardware related just not as severe. It makes no sense that people in the same cities are getting hi speeds while others don't, and every time I test for speed I have four bars, in Cambridge or London, it makes no difference. Could you post the places where you have done the speed tests?

For the O2 guys. HSDPA will probably not work until next year 2007. O2 is planning to integrating it to the public. As of my knowlegde you can order HSDPA seperately with O2 but they will charge you. HSDPA can not be ordered via internet or O2 portal because its not public yet...
