Has someone connected a laptop to internet using TyNT?
I cant. I did it with my htc universal using the wireless modem or internet sharing (aku 3.2).
But TynT hasnt "internet sharing utility" and my laptop doesnt recognize it as modem. Some idea?
thanks

Do you have under programs wireless modems? If you launch this and got to usb then start; your laptop/pc will pnp and request instalation of drivers, I think the drivers and software are on the wiki. Also remember to use the correct APN name i.e. for T-mob uk it is general.t-mobile.uk

It works fine for me with a BlueTooth connection. I don't think anybody has it working over USB.
It works fine using a Dial-up Connection from Windows.... you don't need to activate the Wireless Modem on the TyTN... in fact doing so will prevent it from working...

Hi.Yes, it works setting a dial-up connection with bluetooth but i want to use the wireless modem usb because the dial-up system closes the connection if you receive a phone call.......
I miss the utility "internet sharing" from Universal Aku 3.2. I hope it is present in next TyNT rom.... :(

Hi, read/found it somewhere in the wiki, and it works as you described.
Only thing is always start the modem first before connecting to the PC. Works everytime for me:
Connected speed: 230.4 kpbs (good enough for me as I'm on EDGE connection)

I had the same problem with the USB modem as you describe (Windows not recognising the modem). After hours of searching for an answer I returned the unit to the retailer and demonstrated to the sales man the problem.
They replaced my handset and everything was fine for a few days, USB modem working as it should.
However the USB modem has stopped working again so I am going to return this new unit for another replacement.
I can connect via Bluetooth but there appears to be a serious problem with this unit and USB connections.
Hope this helps

Problem when using a csd connection with mireless modem Apps :
I need to connect directly to a RAS (CSD 9600 bps connection), but i found a problem and an issue.
To be able to make an Modem wireless csd connection, you need to force Phone band to GSM only, because if you let on Auto and you are under UMTS coverage, csd connection will not work.
In the Wireless Modem apps, HTC forgot to force GSM connection for CSD Data call !
If it can help someone...

I used these with the MDAIII and have just got my Vario II to work too. Before you start delete the modem connection and dial up connection if you have them half started as it confiuses the process. Start again and it should work for USB. Using it as we speak.

Ok, I'm currently posting this using my Vario 2 as a GPRS modem via USB :D
It was childishly simple... I ran the Wireless Modem app on my phone, and reconfigured the APN to general.t-mobile.uk (I was making the mistake of putting .co.uk instead of just .uk). I went Menu -> Start, plugged the phone into my laptop. I saw a brief New Hardware found notice as it found and installed the driver for the serial connection (required the drivers as found on the Wiki, just a single .inf file).
Once my phone was running the software, and it had been successfully installed on my laptop, I went into Dial-Up Networking (there's somewhere I've not been for a while!) and set up a new connection. Chose to 'connect to the network at my workplace' as it would offer the most flexibility (and I hate step-through wizard configurations). As the dial-up number I put in *99#, no username or password, and making sure the software was running on the phone, I just hit Connect on my PC.
Bingo: I'm logged on and surfing in less than 10 seconds.
Considering I'm in a VERY patchy area for 3G coverage (my bedroom!) I'm quite impressed. :D Streaming BBC News video as we speak, and it's running with no pauses or anything! It took a little while to 'think about it' and probably initiate the connection to the BBC streaming servers through the network, but once it had commenced the connection (took about 20 seconds) it just ran at full pelt.
I've been able to max the connection out at around 850-900kbps (with a peak once of 1.1mbps), and I've experienced the same speeds (reported by dslreports.com/mspeed) when directly surfing on my phone, so I'm pretty satisfied. I rang T-Mobile and asked them to activate HSDPA on my account, which they did with no fuss almost straight away (just left it for a little while for the QoS update to propagate through the network to my phone). Didn't have to run that HSDPA enabler on my phone or anything! (although I did a few days later anyway, just to see what happened (nothing!) - the perennial tweaker!
Right, I'd better get off this 3G connection before T-Mobile spot me - I'm not supposed to be doing this on my account (or at least, allowed to do this, heh), I'm only on the Basic Web 'n Walk tariff ;)
Done just now:
http://chriswoods.co.uk/files/tmobile3gdialupinbrum.png
Not shabby. Not full speed, but I don't expect to get over 1mbps around here, there's not enough masts until you get into the centre of the city (Birmingham). That said, obviously you can see the connection peaked at 136kb/sec, and I was averaging about 110-118kb/sec, which is nothing to be sniffed at! Forgot to run an upload test though something for tomorrow maybe. The connection was surprisingly snappy, once it had got itself 'sorted out' - it's that odd little waiting time inbetween the first request to a site and the routing being sorted out on the provider's end, but when you think of how much crazy technology, software and hardware is involved in providing this kind of service right to your mobile phone (!) then I'm more than prepared to wait a few seconds for it to kick into action.

Same problem here. Had a long discussion with T-Mobile tech support and tried all kinds of things. I have tried it on 3 separate PCs. On each the modem device is not detected and all he could suggest in the end was a hard reset and if that failed - a new handset. I suspect this feature has a tendency not to work on some handsets. I havent had time to try bluetooth yet. That's a project for another day...

Thanks, will give it a whirl. Only thing that makes me want to persevere is that the word is that the USB connection is significantly faster than bluetooth. It's that vs. the hassle of getting a new handset and messing about with that. Possibly an issue that will be fixed if they ever release a new official ROM...

I got the bluetooth working fairly easily thanks. However it is very unreliable. It works for a few minutes then dies and I have to reconnect. Really really annoying!
I don't know where the weak link is, whether my bluetooth is flaky or the t-moblile UK 3G network is flaky. Need to do some more testing and adjust the position of the device. I get 3G at the window but only GPRS inside the room.
I'm really frustrated by the whole thing and have decided to demand a replacement unit from T-Mobile as I consider the failure of the USB to be a serious thing. Knowing my luck, the USB on the new one will work, but it will exhibit some other fault...

I will second that! PDANET (http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/)is fantastic and is the solution for your WMODEM woes. To use the Tytn as a Wireless modem you need to go into activsync, menu, connections, untick synchronise all PC's with this connection, drop down should be on USB. Click OK, close and kill it from the running programs list.
Next you need to go Start, Settings, Connections, USB to PC, untick Enable advanced network functionality.Click OK, Close.
Now you can use your wireless modem but the way to do it is switch it on first, Wireless Modem, Menu, Start, then plug the miniusb-usb cable into the phone and laptop, wait a moment then the pc will detect it.
You will then need to install the drivers.
When finished with it and a normal session, do the above in reverse.
If you using a BT device on com port 8 move it to another com port ie TomTom satnav receiver, look for registry hacks to do this.
Have fun.

I took the easy route. PDANet seems to work fine. 202Kbps on Edge/GPRS. Using it right now. Also it uses the data part (I have an unlimited data package) as opposed to the minutes if you go the wireless modem route. No hacking ActiveSync, no hacking, no hassels. $34.00 one time.

I've also recently developed the symptom described above of the PC not recognizing the modem as "new hardware".
Actually it worked for exactly one evening when I first got the phone. But now when following all the instructions published above, i.e. disabling USB for ActiveSync, starting the wireless modem with the USB setting prior to connecting the USB cable, etc. etc. The modem is not detected by windows. There is no "new hardware found" dialog and no new modem appears in the device manager. Without the modem being detected there is no way to complete a connection.
The only thing that does happen is that whenever the wireless modem in the phone is started the "Windows Mobile-based Device" under network adapters in the device manager goes away. It appears that the two devices are mutually exclusive. However, the "Windows Mobile-based Device" always returns when the wireless modem is stopped but the wireless modem never appears. ???
Why did Windows ability to detect the modem stop working?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

27-11-2006, 02:37 AM
Never mind. I found the solution.
RNDIS must not be enabled for windows to detect the modem. The problem I had was that I was never able to turn RNDIS off once it had been turned on. I found the solution to that problem in this thread:
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=fundamental_differences_between_how_acti&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
So my "solution" was to first remove the bluetooth connection, then disable RNDIS (in Settings->connections->USB to PC) then do all the stuff described earlier in this thread.
Hope this helps the other folks that had lost the ability to detect the modem. I wasted way too many hours this weekend trying to figure it out.

It seems that T-Mobile UK is "limiting" the UMTS transmission when connecting my 8525/TyTn via the laptop for browsing. When I connect my phone to the laptop via USB and dial-up, I can connect no problem and get good speed. But after 5-10 minutes, the connections hangs and my phone shows that it no longer have a signal, no UMTS, no GPRS, no GSM.
I have to disconnect and try again. HOWEVER, if I am connecting via GPRS to the laptop, worked for as long as I want to.
What's up with that?

Just a little addition I found when I had a similar problem (PC not recognising device as a modem).
Check that you don't have a BT device using COM8 (e.g GPS), if you have change the BT device to a different COM port (e.g. I used COM4). This cured my problems and I can now happily use my VarioII as a modem on WnW Plus although I only seem to get a constant 650kbs but then I put this down to not living in a big city.
