Ive got a XDA exec from O2 and this installs a theme and features specific to O2 is there anyway to remove these safely and are there any advantages to doing this.

You can just switch to another theme. You can also safely uninstall the other O2 programs such as task manager & the today plugin; I did and I've had no problems.
P.S. Are you the UnseenMenace from OCForums? :D

I am the very same :D
I just brought the device with the hope of putting Linux on it, but thats not really viable at this time
So how do I remove these settings and if I require them are they easy enough to get back

I don't know how easy they are to get back, but if you use a program to make a backup then that should do it. Also, I don't know much about how this works but if you need them back then their CABs might be located in the extended ROM (see the sticky for info about that).
As for how to actually remove them, you can remove the skin just by choosing another in Start > Settings > Personal > Today. You can remove the O2 installed programs by going to Start > Settings > System > Remove Programs. It's a while since I did this so I can't remember exactly which are installed by O2, I know there's a task manager and there might be an activeUI - both of which can be removed without problem. Basically when I got mine I removed anything that looked like it was remotely to do with O2 and I have had no problems.

The best way really is to hard reset and do a corporate install!
