Data use to connect to GPRS

I have been running SPB GPRS Monitor to assess email programs. What I just noticed tonight is that it takes 30-40KB to connect to GPRS. I can't readily tell if T-Mobile is charging me for that data.

I had my GPRS connection set for Always on. A problem with always on, or for that matter autofetch on email, is that every time the device loses its Edge or GPRS connection, then regains it, there is around a 35K data use, at least according to SPB GPRS Monitor.

Does anyone know of a GPRS toggle program?

Of course, SPB GPRS monitor has a toggle. There is a feature I didn't know about because I had the popup turned off.

24 hours later, my phone used over 400KB connecting to GPRS. Turning GPRS on uses over 30KB, and if the phone connection is lost (which happens frequently in my home and office) it is usually over 10KB to reconnect.

Meanwhile I looked at my bill, and T-Mobile billed me for less data than SPB says I used, so perhaps T-Mobile isn't including the time spent connecting to the network. On the other hand, there was one day where T-Mo said I used over 1.5 MB and SPB says I used less than 1.1, a large discrepancy.

Are you able to recive your mails thru the GPRS connection? I have to use a proxy server for the GPRS to work, but I can't get new mails thru this GPRS connection with proxy. (using build in messaging application)

I can get new mails when using WiFi...

Can you change any settings to allow mail download over GPRS, thur proxy...?

I don't use a proxy server but have T-Mobile settings. Can you browse the web on GPRS? You need the settings for your carrier.

Yes I can browse the web, but for that I need to set the proxy server and server port explicitly within Opera 8.60

Within the GPRS connection I activated the checkbox to use a proxy server and set al settings correctly, still the messaging application don't want to use the GPRS connection. MSN doesn't work over the GPRS neighter. :(

At the messaging account settings, within the advanced settings I only can select as 'Connect to' -> 'The internet' or 'Work', but not my GPRS connection.

What is your setting for the connection within the advanced settings of you messaging account?

I have the standard APN=internet2.voicestream.com setting, which is automatically inserted by the T-Mo customization in the 2.26 ROM (I have another thread on this). You might solve your problem with this extensive thread:

You shoul NOT use the settings for Wap over Gprs! You should use Internet over Gprs settings.

Thanks for that, actually, I'm using Base I-mode (7€/20MB = 0,35€/MB) instead of the real GPRS option (2,5€/MB) ;)
But for I-mode on a Windows Mobile phone, you need to use a specific proxy, else it won't work
So in fact, this GPRS is not really supported by Base, and that's why I can't ask Base for a solution ;)

Yeah, I read about the I-mode hack.
Instead I went for "BASE Data Access+"
5€ for 10MB and then 2,50€/MB.

I've now tested this further. "Normal" turning on the GPRS when the phone connection has been lost requires 40KB of data flow, according to SPB GPRS Monitor. This turns out to be most of the data I'm using, just connecting ten or so times per day, that is, connecting requires 500KB of data when I am in a place where I lose my connection frequently.

It is still mysterious why email takes so much data, too. With ten messages existing on the server, all having been read, to delete two takes 40KB of data. Sending a 2KB message usually takes 10KB. Why the overhead? (I keep my server mostly clean, just unanswered emails on it).
