View Full Version : High pitched noise

my friend, which i converted to windows mobile, has recently purchased the O2 Atom. His device emits a high pitched noise from the speaker. he says its unbearable in quiet environments.
I searched this forum for a new rom but looks like he's got the latest. I noticed there is a speaker patch that reduces the speaker output to 100db, would that solve the issue?
Also anyone located in the US ever have to send an O2 product in for repair, I want to know what your experience was like and whats the process.
Thank you.

noise from speaker or from the screen?
speaker - try to download patch from seeo2.com - volume speacker limiter.
screen - reflash the ROM, if you will have the same problem, send to sevice center...

Noise from speaker(which for talk on phone) - I have the same problem.
The patch and upgrade of ROM doesn't help. In my observations, this noise is in audio path. You can see big hill(hump) on spectrum analyzer in area of 18(or 16) kHz if connect its to the output for headset(headphones)
But this noise is not permanent(in my device any way). When I bought the ATOM, I didn't hear this noise(or didn't pay attention). I heard this noise after a month(or about). I've tryed to find a solution - no way. One day I noticed that noise is gone. I was update my ATOM to the latest ROM and I noticed that noise is came back....
My ATOM's in service center now. I've point out that it's one of the deffects of device. Second deffect - fast discharge of accum.

The high pitched noise is faulty LCD screen according to O2 and MPS. My Atom has been to service centre 3 times I have owned the Atom for 7 months and it has been at service centre for most of that. Finally O2 replaced the handset. This problem cannot be fixed! even the replacement Atom has the unbearable noise...Selling the rubbish and buying an HP...Dont waste your money or time on the Atom (Im sure you dont like a handset that sounds like loud mosquito) sell it and buy the HP

you are mistaken. it'ts not software priblem. It's hardware problem. many sources in google sad this.

This is very much true. It is known problem as well. Though this problem accrues due to condensators that are located under the LCD causing the interference with LCD. At the same time, when it is determined by the spectrum analyzer that sound output through headphones output is higher at 16-18 kHz as described in original posting by nomad_irk, that eliminates faulty condensators and speakers. Unless the high pitch noise nomad_irk hears is not through headphones or speakers but actually from the device it self. The sound output is controlled by sound distribution module (hardware) and by the sound controller drivers like sdnll.dll and etc. Therefore makes it possible to adjust the sound quality by 3rd party software. So the obvious steps here are, 1st to determine the source of the signal, whether it it’s the noise interference from the condensators under the LCD or the audio output egg. headphone jack or speakers and it’s a sound distribution hardware module problem (which is unlikely) or it’s the drivers (it would be the rom problem) or it’s a 3rd party software that messes with sound output. 2nd. If it’s the condensators that cause interference, the only way to fix this problem, is just to get rid of the device. Exchanging the device will not help. It’s the combination of incompatible LCD and condensators used that cause the frequency interference. On the other hand, if it’s the software and drivers problem, just either try resetting the device, (to get rid of problem software) and if that doesn’t help, perform a rom upgrade and hope that drivers are updated.
By the way, HP and O2 Atom are the same devices.

I've opened the ATOM. There's no capacitors that can make interferencing. Any way, under LCD there's shield covered elements(and capacitors too). 2nd: If there's interferency, why i can registred it on headphones output?
The truth is out there (c) X-Files :)

Yes the Atom and HP are the same device but not one HP has been reported with the noise, so HP or Quanta have corrected this. O2 have far too many Atoms and Exec's distributed and probably in stock to fix or even bother fixing them, I have had two Exec's and two Atom's replaced and the replaced devices still squeal. I am going to contact Consumer Protection Agency with all the details I have collected pressing the main issue of distributing a faulty product knowingly. They cannot deny it, the high pitch noise is definately bad for your hearing when your ear is pressed against the device, so unless O2 give me a full refund I will do my best to make life very difficult for them. Anybody else interested in getting refunded for a faulty crapy product that cannot be fixed can PM me to discuss it further.

Hi homer285,
I too have the same stupid noise. Mine is at the service centre now for the 4th times since I bought it back in late Feb. What a big mistake in buying that crap!!! If you are contacting Consumer Protection Agency and need another person with the same issue, let me know. I am also thinking about contacting them myself.

You saying it is 18-20KHz? Which one?
How on earth did you measure it with a spectrum analyser (and a microphone?).
Will try with my atom and my lab's spect analyser if you could tell me how ...
I am still thinking its just a LED chargepump cap...
Thx..
