Mio P550 / P350 ROM upload

Hi,

First of all I was using "search" but I didn't find anything special about mio P550 / P350. I know that this forum isn't for mio but mostly for HTC. But maybe someone can help me.

Is there any software which can "pull out" ROM image to my PC? Lot of inquisitive users accidentally deleted ROM in their Mio's (at boot loader they chose Low Level format).

After this operation they are still able to enter boot loader mode. There is an option: Image Upgrade Tools:

0=Image by USB
1=Image by SD/MMC

The problem is that we don't knot how to copy image from healthly P350/P550 to SD or PC by USB

There is also other menu: DUMP Tools

0=Dump WholeIMG_CKS (if we chose this nothing happens, only "Image_CKS:0x1ddc3aa8" apears on the screen). PC discovers mio as: SEC S3C2410X Test B/D and Windows cannot find any driver for this.
1=User Store to SD (this is nothing but backup of all data in P350)
2= SD to UserStore (restore of previosly backedup data)
3=Mark Bad Block (50MB) - ??

Do you have any ideas how we can dump image?

Did the solution given by XDante work? I am currently considering going down this route to backup the ROM on my new P550 to allow me to restore it at a later date if all goes horribly wrong!

Follow the procedure:
Connect the mio p550 to PC
1.put the Button of the PDA in ON position
2. hold the joystick downward and press the reset button
3.choose “Image Upgrade tools”
4.choose “0=Image by USB”
5.intall the usb driver (PC require the drivers). The driver in the folder “USB driver”
6.open the software “dnw5.0e”
7.(if you want to make a test of connection USB, click the” USB port/Statute”. If all is ok go to step 8
8. click “USB port/transmitted” and to show the way of the file “MioP550 - Osc260A R05_P09.nb0”
9.press the reset button to restart the mio p550.

Anyway, I hope that this proves useful.

The rom in archive is the only that don't hang upgrade procedure on 99% between the 6+ i've tried.

MITAC P350 flashed with P550 fimware fully working!

So:

1) Download this file http :// www . klubin.hrleon . com / pda / ROM_do_p550_rg . zip (delete space)
2) Boot your mitac in bootloader model (down arrow pressed)
3) Go to "0=Image Upgrade Tools"
4) Then go to "0=Image by USB"
5) Decompress the file to a folder and open dnw.exe
6) Check Configuration->Options. Set USB Port Download address at 0x3000000
7) Connect the pda to the pc usb port
Cool On dnw.exe go to USB Port->Transmit->Transmit and select MioP550 - Osc260A R05_P09.nb0
9) Wait for finish flashing procedure (it take about 2 minutes).
10) Disconnect the pda and make hard reset
11) You done!!!

I tried many rom but this is the only that don't make flashing procedure hang at 99%.
The rom contain only English software.

Now I'm very happy and looking for italian one!

Hi, I have bought a MIO P550. Trusting official web site of Mio, I have downloaded the patch (battery) and installed it. Now I cant have my lovely MIO passed after MIO splash screen.

I have tried everything that I found on this forum. It was very helpfull. The last I have tried the procedure that RockDr describes. However, nothing has been succeded :-(

Should I perform low level formatting? If I do so, will I be able to install Windows Mobile 5.0 again?

Yeah.. go ahead and do a low level format, it will take a few minutes. Then upload the rom from the computer via USB. It should automatically boot right right up. I did the exact same thing with the power patch because it doesn't give any kind of warnings.

Incase the other people's website go down here is the one I downloaded and used on my P550. I haven't had one issue with it yet and it's been over a month. Only issue you will have will be with miomaps, Each install CD that comes with the P550 package has a serial that is already in your ROM. This new rom will make your MioMaps come up with a "HardwareIdChanged" error. No biggie though, you can download a cracked version of it or just get TomTom6 *100x better and easier to use*

No, from what I know there isn't any differences except Wifi and Bluetooth support. I just really wish they would push this model to WM6, I only paid 300 bucks this for model and Mio only cares about updating their crappy MioMaps program, so probably not. I can always dream.......

The best way to upload a new ROM image from the SD , is to change the file name to winceimg.bin after formatting the SD to FAT16.
1.connect the device to power
2. enter boot loader by pressing the joystick down and reset together
3. enter to upgrading image
4. choose upgrd from SD

I needed to flash my WM5 ROM for my Mio P35o to convert its language from dutch to english and even after following what you listed, I was having the same (stuck at 99%) problem.

I realized that it was probably because I was doing all this in Windows Vista and because of some problem, probably DNW was not closing the connection after the ROM image transfer did it keep getting stuck at 99.

I shifted to XP and the whole thing worked, maybe because the test bed driver I was using was written for XP... in any case, I'm guessing the 99% problem is not due to the ROM but probably something wrong with the host machine driver/software that doesnt end the transfer properly.

Hi guys,

I tried to make an update (power pack) to my mio from mio website and after the device was reset it I couldn’t start the device anymore.
I follow all the step posted on this web site but the loading of the image MioP550 - Osc260A R05_P09.nb0 hanged always on 99% both in image Upgrade Tools and UBOOT Upgrade Tools.

Could anyone from you give an image of Oscar250/260AB_UT_R13, I guess didn't work because of the incompatibility between versions.

I've made a low level format, because I couldn't unlock the the screen (soft reset was not enough).

Now I am not able to start my PDA. When I push the reset button the blue lamp flashes, but that's all. I tried to push the joystick and the reset together, but nothing.

The Rom backup copy was done continuing the steps described in many post that they can find in Internet. As I understood, I think that restore a P550 formatted by means of this file is not possible , but on the other hand, We nothing gets lost by try it.

I read in many post that the Mio P550 rom (MioP550 - Osc260A R05_P09.nb0 ) work in to Mio P350. 100% functionality .

However, the wiffi not work in P350 because, the P350 haven't the necessary hardware.

Sorry Nixeus, but this is not working. I have downloaded, extracted and renamed the file. Put on SD card, booted to Image by SD/MMC. It writes MountDisk SUCCESS!!!
then
Open WholeImage ...
and remains so forewer.
I press reset, then everything get back to previous.

Second try, now using the normal way with ActiveSynch, this asks me for an activation key.

Third try, using the USB update tool DNW5.0e. This way start the download, but after 53% device reboots. Fortunately everything gets back to normal operation.
Any idea how to proceed forward?

I bought last week a Mio DigiWalker 560 with WM 6 Classic preinstalled.It has a small list of apps not as I saw on a friend of mine's PDA with WM 5.And more - I cant use the WiFi.On my Access Point I'm using MAC Control for authentication.But on this kind of Windows Mobile I cant see the wireless card to get the MAC address.I know it is in because it can see my wireless AP SSID but without MAC.... So I need a ROM Image with WM 6 Professional......if it exists,or at least a WM 5 Pro which can run on my Mio 560 ?

Phone the mio assistance and tell thme about your problem ! They can help you !

Additional info:

This problem appeared right after selecting Mark Bad sectors (50MB) in the boot menu.
I am sure I did something wrong. Shame on me. But can somebody explain to me what I did? What did this action cause and how can I get back my bootup menu?

Thanks, But this is only the second part of that post. The first part begins with ENTERING THE BOOT MENU then selecting image upgrade from USB
then the device gets in a waiting position for usb connections from the pc.

My problem is that I cannot ENTER BOOT MENU.

I have checked the link. They are mentioning there to enter the uboot menu.
My problem is that they are talking about a completely different model (which has a "red" button and so on...) and also that I think this uboot menu is the same that we call bootmenu, which I still cannot enter.

I have a mio p350 and suddently, after two months of working, it is frozen now!!!

I tried everything (soft reset, etc) but nothing happened!!! It was still frozen !!!

I tried "Image Upgrade Tools" and then "Image by USB" it says "Download & Run" and then "Waiting for download" but then "cable not connected".
It does the same with Activesync from my PC. I cannot connect Mio with my PC.

Despite that USB cable is connected, nothing happens !!!
Can anyone help me please ???
What should I do?
I've also done lowlevformat so I suppose I have nothing now !!!

I did what you said but when running dnw.exe, at
USB port transmit > transmit it says "Cannot open USB device|" !!!!

Always take a dump of your ROM before trying to flash your PDA. It may be usefull for you and others. If you want to share the result, please upload on rapidshare (for example) and send me a mail with the file reference.

The 3 files here in the P560 dump correspond to Partition0/1/2 in that description. With a hexeditor you can fabricate an MBR and an MSFLSH50 header that corrensponds to P560 partition sizes and inject P560 raw files into the nb0 file and you can flash that. And there's a chance that you brick your device ;-)

I took a look at the part01.raw and what makes me sceptic, in OEM KERNEL package P560 uses a different flash driver than P550. So hw is not necessarily the same. And the above method without further cooking might not work smoothly.

Anyway as P560 is really close to P550 in hw, the above dump can be really useful in cooking a WM6 for P550. So I believe we would need help from an experience chef to proceed ;-)

Anyway as P560 is really close to P550 in hw, the above dump can be really useful in cooking a WM6 for P550. So I believe we would need help from an experience chef to proceed ;-)

The P560 rom is almost the same one that P550, except that the boot is different.

It is just necessary to modify the sector of boot, we have information with the top!

you should hard restart your pda and enter by buttons combination in service menu, your computer will ask for drivers..install "SECdriver" then select wince update - update by usb and then start dnw transmision, another method is to put on sd card the file renamed to winceimg.bin and another created file "winceimg.cks"


the cks file shold be that form:

binSize : 16155144 /this is the size of winceimg.bin reported by windows
checksum: 0x668BA555 /this is the checksum of winceimg.bin generated by for example winhex

DONE!!! With the following procedure i can repair my p350 lowlevel formatted.
The rom in archive is the only that don't hang upgrade procedure on 99% between the 6+ i've tried.

MITAC P350 flashed with P550 fimware fully working!

Many thanks also to pdaclub.pl!

So:

1) Download this file http :// www . klubin.hrleon . com / pda / ROM_do_p550_rg . zip (delete space)
2) Boot your mitac in bootloader model (down arrow pressed)
3) Go to "0=Image Upgrade Tools"
4) Then go to "0=Image by USB"
5) Decompress the file to a folder and open dnw.exe
6) Check Configuration->Options. Set USB Port Download address at 0x3000000
7) Connect the pda to the pc usb port
Cool On dnw.exe go to USB Port->Transmit->Transmit and select MioP550 - Osc260A R05_P09.nb0
9) Wait for finish flashing procedure (it take about 2 minutes).
10) Disconnect the pda and make hard reset
11) You done!!!

I tried many rom but this is the only that don't make flashing procedure hang at 99%.
The rom contain only English software.

Now I'm very happy and looking for italian one!

You can follow the following actions list originally posted by cid254. It works, the ROM is in english. (I'm still looking for the italian version !!).
The USB driver for the PC must be installed before to connect the PDA, you can find it here http://poi.betterstore.com.au.

Currently, I have chinese WM6 installed on the P360 and prefer to have the english rom. Would appreciate if someone can upload the P360 English WM6 rom :)

As this is my first post, I'd like to say hallo to everybody on this fantastic forum.
I am not an expert on PDA's, But I exchanged an old laptop with a MIO P350 a couple of weeks ago, and I'd like to let it work as good as possible.

I began by upgrading it using Osc260a r05_p09.nb0 and, thanks to your instructions, it worked perfectly.

I installed all the programs and games that where on it again and everything works.

But after installing the SDHC.cab file I can only read and use a 4Gb SDHC card.
If I place a 16Gb card into the slot I can see all the files on it, but I can't use them, I get an error every time I want to start a program or copy a file from it.
I think it can't read behind the 4Gb limit.

Another problem is that I can't connect to the Internet.

I have a Sandisk wi-fi SDIO card (SDWSBD-000) and after installing the driver I can see it, but it will not connect to my wireless router even if I can see the five lines of the full signal it sends.

I tried to install the WM6 version of the ROM, everything works too, except the SDIO card and the SDHC driver, even if the drivers are loaded I can't use both. Only normal SD cards work.

Someone having the same problems? I would really appreciate if I could find a solution to them.

Is there anyone has Chinese P360 ROM? I have a English P360 Rom developed by CrashOverHead and I installed it on my P350. It works! But I prefer to have a Chinese P360 Rom or someone can tell me how to get into engineering mode of P360. My friend has a P360 but I could not get into engineering mode to make a rom backup.

doraku88, can you get inito engineeing mode? I read a tHread on other forum and people said to slide the power switch to on and at mean time hold the power button on the top of machine. But it doesn't work for me.

Same happened to me when T620 freeze during a user store dump and had to reset it ... couldn't enter boot menu, tried to remove battery etc. After 2h of trying usb flashing tools and stuff (non of them worked), i tried starting the device with the On-Off button (with the stylus) while pressing the joystick down (instead of Reset - joystick down) ... and suprise, it entered the boot menu !!

Trial and error ftw :)

I asked to a person who is in same situation (p550 black screen due "failed upgrade"*) but no luck :-(

Windows doesn't recognize any device and DNW flasher too.

The last way is discovering jtag pinout (if nixeus-crashoverhead method doesn't work).

Now i'm sitting on the river looking quiet water...

I had a similar, though not exactly the same problem. I'm a noob, but this is what I did:

I did a low level format and flashed crashoverhead's WM 1.6 ENG v1.5b ROM (winceimg.bin) from my SD card. It (supposedly) flashed successfully, but when I did a soft reset to restart the device -- nothing.

Did a soft reset and tried to get back into the bootloader about 20 times -- nothing.

Cried because I thought I bricked my device.

Eventually got it to work again this way:
1. Turned off the master power switch (at the bottom of the device) for 1 minute, then switched it back to "on."
2. Hold the joystick to the "down" position and hit the soft reset button. I kept holding the joystick down and magically the bootloader came back on.
3. Inserted my SD card with a fresh copy of Crashoverhead's WM 1.6 ENG v1.5b ROM (winceimg.bin) and reflashed the device. Again, according to the screen, it flashed successfully.
4. Soft reset to restart the device.
5. Another black screen -- started to cry again.
6. After about 60 seconds of me crying and not touching the device, the Mio startup screen magically appeared and the device succesfully started in WM6.1.
7. I've now successfully flashed it with the OEM ROM and the WM6.1 ROM. Turns out I wasn't waiting long enough for the device to restart after flashing the ROM. Each time, it takes FOREVER to reboot with the new ROM.
8. Did a little happy dance, then bitched again because the device still does not recognize SDHC cards, which is the whole reason I upgraded the device toe WM6.1.

I can't emphasize the importance of the crying :D

To make a long story short, I got my P550 bricked after trying to do a downgrade from wm6 eng crashoverheads
to another rom: Osc260A R05_P09.nb0 .
I renamed the file ( Osc260A R05_P09.nb0) to winceimg.bin and flashed it from SD.
During reading suddenly I got a white screen so I hit reset ( maybe i should have waited a while longer)
Then I got black screen and all leds on ( red and blue).
So it's dead and I can get to the bootloader anymore.

Needless to say I'll be very gratefull for any help!!!

- Create a new directory (our 'working directory'), e.g. C:\ROM.
- Open a command prompt in the your working directory.
- Extract the itsutils download to your working directory.
- Type 'pdocread -l' at the command prompt. This will produce output similar to below, these are the addresses of the ROM sections. If this fails, ensure your device is application unlocked and that HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\1001 has a value of 1, NOT 2.

The next step is to get the OS area of the ROM from your device in it's raw format.

- Create a new directory (our 'working directory'), e.g. C:\ROM.
- Open a command prompt in the your working directory.
- Extract the itsutils download to your working directory.
- Type 'pdocread -l' at the command prompt. This will produce output similar to below, these are the addresses of the ROM sections. If this fails, ensure your device is application unlocked and that HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\1001 has a value of 1, NOT 2.

then in cmd in itsutils directory run this

I have a MIO P550B and after update with rom: "Osc260A R05_P09" have troubles because has differeces between P550 and P550B (screen not centralized and audio too low), but before to update i made a backup of my original rom ("Oscar 270a_ut_r02" - Portuguese) the format is raw :
part00.raw, part01.raw, part02.raw and part03.raw, now i need to recompile on format nb0 but i dont know how to do. Can you help-me ? thanks.

I want to try this but not without a full backup of my current WM5 rom.

I followed instructions to get the raw files.

So what's next?

If I try the wm6.1 rom and I want to go back, what do I have to do with the raw files?

Thanks for link and everything is working, but I have found some bugs. If you start Calculator then you get error message about can't loading skin. Also there is two items in control panel not translated into english. Maybe someone can correct this and post link. I'll be thankfull.

EDIT: I have search forums and google, but nothing found. Please, maybe you can tell me. I have upgraded my MIO P550 with WM6.1, but no additionsal software works. For example there is Office Mobile or SD card drivers designed for WM6.1, but I get error "unsuccessful installation". Why ? If I have WM6.1 why no additional software works with this WM6.1 ?

Thanks to crashoverhead for the WM61 update. I tried it on my P550 and it works fine!. The issue of Notepad, some french screens is there but that's ok..

Office has disappeared, but wifi is able to connect, that's what matters to me..

I tried installing some software, but none of them seem to install/work. Divx, Real etc.

Also ActiveSync does not work with my Vista. This does not bother me but I need to install apps that is the only reason to use ActiveSync..some are not CAB files.

The same issues for me... Everything else works just fine. Its very sad that no applications installs. No office, no nothing. It would be nice that regular WM6.1 applications will install then you can get office or SD drivers to support bigger SD cards. We all waiting for new relizes :)

it's working fine on p550, has some untranslated parts, but it's ok.

it supports sdhc.

you have to low level format before the flash, doing this after will give you a bricked device and you have to flash the rom again.

you have to do the activesync trick to prevent it from starting

it takes more ram memory to run, with wm5 i was having 42mb free after boot, with this i have 36.

Instead of using USB (yes, I have the right cable!), I tried my bluetooth USB dongle to connect to my PC.

Amazingly, this works!

Any hints of how to solve the USB problem :confused: ?
While installing in Windows, it says ...PROTOTYPE...don't forget to rename ID...blabla

I am trying to upgrade my P550 to WM6 and I am not succeeding in it, so I try my luck and want to ask the Forum politely to help me out!!!

I have done this like told in the forum:

Enter on bootloader mode
Make a low level format
Copy the file "winceimg.bin" on your SDCARD
Put your SDCARD on your PDA
Flash YOUR PDA -) Under last step I am using as well 0=upgrade Image as well 1=UBOOT

Under booth situation (0 and 1) PDA tells me: Mountdisc Success

But then the Bluescreen stays forever under both ways and tells OPEN WHOLEIMAGE or OPEN UTimage.

What should I do in your opinion?

After reset and open/close the screen stays black. I can still enter in the boot menu...I sometimes waited 4-5 hours on the Bluecreen....Please!!

I'm using a Yakumo DeltaX 5BT (should be about the same as Mio P550). I did use a "freedom input keyboard" with this device. Now I upgraded to WM6.1 with Crashovers version 2.1. Although bluetooth is generally working, none of the drivers for the keyboard would work.
Can somebody tell me, if this WM6.1 version uses MS or the Widcomm bluetooth stack ?

Also, I noticed after installing the bluetooth drivers for the keyboard, that suddenly I didn't get sound anymore....
Very strange...

Right now I'm reinstalling.

Hello, i installed WM6.1 on Mio P550 ( the french rom translated to english ) and i have a problem with the ..sound . It keeps setting itself to off , and even when it's on , i have no sound , speaker or headphones .

Did you try to install widcomm/broadcomm bluetooth drivers ?
What you described is exactly what happened to me, after I tried to use widcomm/broadcomm bluetooth drivers.
Your device needs the MS bluetooth stack.

I'm afraid you have to reinstall WM6.1.
Try not to hassle with the bluetooth stack this time. It worked for me (and I don't even have a Mio P550 -----> I have Yakumo DeltaX 5BT).

DONE!!! With the following procedure i can repair my p350 lowlevel formatted.
The rom in archive is the only that don't hang upgrade procedure on 99% between the 6+ i've tried.

MITAC P350 flashed with P550 fimware fully working!

Many thanks also to pdaclub.pl!

So:

1) Download this file http :// www . klubin.hrleon . com / pda / ROM_do_p550_rg . zip (delete space)
2) Boot your mitac in bootloader model (down arrow pressed)
3) Go to "0=Image Upgrade Tools"
4) Then go to "0=Image by USB"
5) Decompress the file to a folder and open dnw.exe
6) Check Configuration->Options. Set USB Port Download address at 0x3000000
7) Connect the pda to the pc usb port
Cool On dnw.exe go to USB Port->Transmit->Transmit and select MioP550 - Osc260A R05_P09.nb0
9) Wait for finish flashing procedure (it take about 2 minutes).
10) Disconnect the pda and make hard reset
11) You done!!!

I tried many rom but this is the only that don't make flashing procedure hang at 99%.
The rom contain only English software.

Now I'm very happy and looking for italian one!

i had a mio p350 flshed with p550 and windows 6.1
but yesterday when i try to turn it on suddenly it started formatting and by mistake i turned it off at 2% of formatting. then its not starting up again at all....
i have tried all the resetting methods, and also tried to connect using usb but nothing appears. when i connect to pc using usb orange light comes up on the top. and whenever i reset it flashes but nothing on the screen...
does anyone here to help?

Hi,

are you able to get into the UBOOT / Oscar menu? While holding down the "joystick" press the reset button with the pen.

You should see then a blue screen from within you can reflash (Image Upgrade Tools) via SDCARD.

Copy the image file to the SD card an reflash it again.

If you can't enter the bootloader mode you can't upgrade, so make sure you did it right.
First, hold the jostick down (towards the charging plug).
Next use your stylus to press reset then release it.
Make sure you hold the joystick until the white Mio screen appears.
If it still doesn't work, try holding it for different lengths of time, and make sure your SD card is inserted.

Hope this helps!

PS - You might want to wait for wm6.5. It could come out any day now.

In this topic (article) i describe method restoring MIO from brick-state (it may be flash uBoot, format uBoot, bad full flash) via JTAG.
I restored my MIO a701 with JTAG.

What we need:
1. ocd commander (ocd_cmdr.exe)
2. clear IPL (option)
3. clear uBoot (from full R46)
4. JTAG cabble
5. Soldering iron
6. BIN2HEX utility (HJTAG 0.7.0 have this converter)
7. Disassembler (Option)

What I do for brick state MIO: only flash uBoot from 48 to 55 - AND my MIO on power on light only buttons!

1. Connect power to mio
2. Connect JTAG cabble
3. Place Battery to mio (it is very important)
4. Connect power for JTAG cabble
5. Connect LPT port to JTAG cabble
6. Press reset and hold!
7. Start OCD commander
8. Click all ok
9. Mio will blank leds. See some window:

hbr 0xa0000000
go
load (programm ask you for file in hex format. give him WINCEIMG-UBOOT.BIN.1.hex)

if programm halt on 0xa0000000 - IPL good!
In next you must load WINCEIMG-UBOOT.BIN.1.hex to disassembler and with command step hbr go pc manipulate with programm execution uBoot from ocd commander and monitor in disassembler!
Press buttons for enter to uBoot, and execute uBoot step by step (pass some cycle). Some times uBoot go from 0xA00XXXXX address to 0x000XXXXX address - in this case do command pc 0xA00XXXXX where XXXXX same as in 0x000XXXXX. If you miss this jump - next what do mio is freeze!
On XX Attempt my MIO show uBoot menu!

If you flash IPL that don't start:
1. Unpack IPL from full flash R46 (how it make - please describe)
2. Depack IPL on two part (0x200 bytes are repeated on all IPL)
3. Convert IPL to HEX format (start address 0x1800)
3. Load IPL to memory after enter to ocd commander
4. And enter command that shows above

I got an P360 from ebay so I can't tell you much details what the ROM version is because the language is greek, and I don't recognize even the letters....

I tried to flash my P360 and insert the new WM 6.1, but I can't access the bootloader at all. I tried everthing you suggested on this topic, and nothing helped me.

Is there any other way to flash the P360 and insert the new WM 6.1?

I have Mio P550 with WM5, and when I use the IGO - GPS software, afther some time I got error:

"Fatal Error
Fatal error occurred
in main thread.
Address : 0x4b56420c
Exception : 0x000001d "

I have reinstalled the WM5 and deleat all the ather programs, and I get the same error.

Then I decide to upgraide to WM6.1 that i have find in this forum - post # 151 by timmmooo.

But when I do the - low level format, I got the error message:
" FMD GetBlockStatus Error = "
I see the messeage at the biginning, and then see 2% of the format to 16% , and see the message againe, after some time, the format continue, and again the same in 27% of the format process and so on.

When I install the WM6.1 by using "winceimg.bin" on my SDCARD, during the installtion of WM6.1, it make an fomatting process, and iI can see the same error massege " FMD GetBlockStatus Error = " at the bottom of the screen.

I have to say that WM6.1 is operrate, but maybe the error during the format is the reasion why I got the "fattal Error" at the first place.

Can I fix the error with the formating?
What should I do in your opinion?

I got that exact same error every time I upgraded and everything is working fine.
Instead of using igo, use oncourse 8. Igo doesn't work on My mio p550 either.

It is very interesting that you got the same errors, but I can tell you that in the begininng befor about 18 mounth I have no errors With IGO6 and IGO8, that I have installed from forums in the web.

The fatal error started befor about a yaer ago, when I and my friend have use my MIO P550 with IGO8 in Israel, Canada and US.

I know that only some of the versions of IGO8 in the web, are working with MIO P550 or P350.

from the forum of ppcwarez.org with all the maps, POI, buildings, dem of Canada + US + Israel.
I have find now that it working good and very fast related to IGO8, in my home with my MIO P550 + WM6.1, but I still have to test it on the road for some days, and see if it will not make any error.

By the way, I have installed as the IGO8 8.0.0.35389 from Apr 15 2008, but it working very heavy related to IGO Amigo, and I have to see if it will make no errors.

Installation

Backup your data first. Upgraded formats your device.
1. Extract the file using 7-zip or WinRAR
2. Copy the 'winceimg.bin' file to your SD card.
3. Put the card in your Mio.
4. Hold the down button (on the joystick) and press reset with a paperclip.
5. When the blue screen comes up, use the joystick to navigate:
If you want, choose number '6= LowLevelFormat' before you upgrade. It just makes the process a little safer.
6. Choose '0= Image Upgrade Tools'
7. Choose '1= Image by SD/MMC'
8. When the process is done, press the reset button.
The fist start might take a while, but are fast after that.

If you can only read english still, give it a try. French is fairly easy to understand with the icons.

Thx, moonscapex. I did try to restart and only got a black screen. So, I re-flashed the ROM. Restarted and got a black screen. Tried 3-4 more times, each time got a black screen. Any other suggestions?

You should
a) Re-download the ROM in case it got corrupt
b) Download a different ROM

Which ROM are you using now? I can give you links for one that works.

Could you try the wm6.5 ROM? It worked on mine really good. The download link is above in one of my other posts.

i've tried both SD (on 512MB and 2GB, freshly formatted FAT16 cards) and via USB (using DNW v0.50I). In all cases, given the messages showing up throughout the Image File upgrade, it looks like the winceimg.bin file is read okay. But then the format process starts and i see the lowlevelformat msg, then a little while later the getblockstatus error. not sure what to do next...

I've gone over almost all the troubleshooting I know. A couple things you could try is upgrade the BIOS (the thing that is used to upgrade) or try wm5.0 (the 3rd post i think). When you reset after the upgrade, do you see the white and green mio logo?

I found that it boots faster (20 seconds after the first boot) and has more free RAM. If you don't clutter it with hundreds of useless apps, it will be just as fast as wm6.1. If you uninstall an app, i would use sktools to completly remove it. I have about 25 apps, and my boot time is 2 minutes.

Maybe they used a JTAG setup or something else that i don't have. So, i'm a little leery about trying again to load wm6.1; i don't want it to cost me another $80

My beard is getting long and grey waiting for the final WM6.5 from CrashOverHead. So today in a moment of despair, I decided that I would flash my P550 with the beta version. Well, I have to say that MoonScapex has explained things really well. In fact I completed the work in less than 5 minutes.

When I started the new-look device, I realized that not only CrashOverHead has made a great Rom work but he also made miracles! My Mio has meanwhile become an Airis (from the initial Logo) and it is now equipped with the telephone capability! Of course I'm joking as I'm very admirative of CrashOverHead.

I recall Nixeus, the younger CrashOverHead, was struggling back in Sep 2007 asking loud and around for a Rom of some devices of his. 2 years later he wrote Rom with such a quality that turn happy thousands and perhaps hundreds of thousands of Mio customers all over the world starting with WM6.1. If it depended from me, I would designate "CrashOverHead for President!" (for the place of Sarkozy).

Coming back to earth, I realized that with this beta version, TomTom7 presents now abnormally big characters (only for its messages) and the map seems to stretch out more than normal. The version I installed was exactly the same as when the device ran with CE 4. I tried to search in TomTom customization and WM6.5 settings but found nothing useful. Do you have any idea?

Another point is that I found no way to decrease/increase the screen backlight. Could anyone tell me how to do it? Thanks for your help.

1. The problem of stretched TT7 has been fixed. I actually installed by error the VGA version (480 X 640) instead of QVGA (240 X 320) version. Sorry!

2. I'm still unable to see how to gradually lower or increase the screen backlight to save battery life. This option was possible with the original Rom (CE 4.0) as far as I can remember.

3. By clicking on the battery icon on top-right corner, nothing happens! Is there a way that you know to check the level of battery?

4. I found that compared to my HTC Touch Cruise (2.8" 240 x 320), the resolution of the different icons is not that cut clear. Perhaps because the Mio screen is bigger (3.5") ? or perhaps there's something to tune that I'm unaware of?

5. Is there a place somewhere that talks about the application QuickGPS from HTC to fix satellites positions?

Sorry for so many questions especially when we know this is a Beta version! I wish only that CrashOverHead takes these into account for the coming Rom. Thanks for your help.

By surfing in the AIRIS T620 forums, I read that even though the Airis T620 and Mio P350/P550 are clones, there's however some HW difference between them. That means that the ROM for T620 is slightly different from the ROM for P550.

I have downloaded and flashed WM6.5 to my P550 from the link you gave in your previous posts and everything went perfect. But now I have a small doubt. Everytime I reboot my P550, there's a logo of Airis that appears first! Do you encounter the same Airis logo on your device? Or have I simply downloaded and flashed the wrong version for Airis?

1. Thanks for the information on the backlight. By installing Resco Today, in the batterie area, there's a link for backlight at the bottom of the screen. There you can actually change the backlight. The light intensity varies when you move the cursor left or right.

2. For the QuickGPS, I downloaded the application extracted from HTC but miserably failed to make it work. As a matter of fact, I found nowhere packedephemeris.ee in Windows folder.

3. Another point is the keyboard. Mine is AZERTY and I warmly wish a QWERTY one. Then again by using Resco Keyboard I have a fabulous QWERTY keyboard with a very nice design.

4. Have you noticed that there's no soft Reset application in this Rom? I found one on the Web and it works like a champ. Its name is "Singh's Tings Soft Reset V1.00" . I integrated it in Resco Today and it sits there as a button.

That's it! Looking forward to testing the final rom.

I have the P550 and decided to take the big leap and upgrade into wm6.1 english

I download the correct (?) image and I i followed this procedure:

1) Formatted my SD card (1gib) from my computer using FAT16.
2) Copied the wm6.1 image in the SD card and renamed it as "winceimg.bin"
3) Removed the SD card from my computer and pluged in my MIO.
4) Booted the OSCAR loader (hard reset + joystick down).
5) Perfomed LowlevFormat option - *Competed*
6) Went to "Image Upgrade Tools" -> "Image by SD/MMC".
I get the following output:

(now its proceeding on reading the image and gives me
an ascending percentage)

So i do hard reset again but nothing happens. The LEDS turns off, the screen never opens.

I have a doubt in this case. Sometimes the image downloaded could be corrupted. I followed exactly the same procedure as you did but used the WM 6.5 beta FR image directly from the initial CE 4.0. Everything went perfect in less than 5 minutes.

So download and try again with the 6.1 version. If it still doesn't work then your P550 is anyway unusable. In this case you don't loose anything to download the 6.5 beta FR and try with this one that works. If it works then it's the 6.1 Rom that is corrupted. If it doesn't then there's something we need to further dig. On the MIO this time.

Like i said its the wm6.1 rom thats problematic, since I did reinstall a wm5 setup afterwards.

And after that i was still restless: I thought i give wm6.5 french a go and it did load correctly aswell.

So its my wm6.1 thats not working.

Now im not sure i wanna keep the wm6.5 because its french and although i kinda manage to work around the language with google translator its still is a pain in the ass, and far from comfortable.

I would like a valid link for wm6.1 if you please :) And not rapidshare, its getting very hard to download anything as a free user :(


I wanna add this aswell. My brother bought the HTC HD2 (!!!). While my french wm6.5 has the basic "start" menu with his, the whole "desktop" is wholly different!

Animated weather with rain falling on his screen, messenger live integration and what not!

So that brings me to another question. How (and where from!) can i get all those widgets from for the weather, where can i get the MSN from (cant find it for the life of me.).

For MSN I use Palringo - http://www.palringo.com/, but if you want real MSN, tap the Marketplace icon (which is like the apple app store) and use it to install msn. And what do you mean by visuals? Themes, maybe?

Let me recap about my "experience" with the HTC D2 my brother bought.

On the front screen, the desktop lets call it, you can see the weather and big clock numbers. Also you get rainfalling on the desktop if its raining. Its great visuals :)

Aside from that, there is a great issue with my explorer running any youtube videos. I think it tries to open an outside application to play those videos (i guess there is no embeded-play code in the explorer yet?) and it prints out an error.

Also is there a way to play shoutcast (www.shoutcast.com) ?

As for visuals, the Mio doesn't have enough graphics power to handel the incredible HTC visuals, but look in to SPB Mobile shell, which almost looks as good and runs on the Mio.

What Bliapis explained I saw it on my HTC Touch HD after the flashing of WM6.5 Miri. In the cook WM6.5 beta FR from CrashOverHead you have another flavour. Go to Start/Settings/Today/Items/ and go for Windows Default. Let us know if you like it.

During the previous note, I just forgot to add something on the limited graphic capability of the P550 highlighted by MoonScapex.

I read somewhere that one of the major problems encountered by CrashOverHead in cooking WM6.5 EN for P550 is that he does not have huge memory at disposal with this device. (MIO P550: CPU Samsung S3C2440 400 MHz - 128 MB ROM - 64 MB RAM).

So I guess there might be a few apps that will be left out from the stock Rom but that you can download later on from the web and install. Perhaps still with a quite acceptable performance!

On my P550, I installed with no problem Microsoft .NET CF3.5, TomTom7 with Europe 1GB map, Resco, Soft Reset...They all run very well and I'm truly delighted. Stability and reliability is what I appreciated more from this Rom.

I got pretty much excited with the new version of windows i installed on my pda.

I finally decided to stick with the french version of wm6.5 and not go into trouble installed the 6.1 english ( i was getting a feeling it would be again a corrupted rom and so much waste of my effort).

I installed msn live and its pretty much awesome :) It simply delivers the package by activelly taking the role of an MSN suite with hotmail pop3/smtp and messenger in one package. Nothing bad to say about it.

I also installed the newest Skyfire browser. What really takes Skyfire apart from the rest browser is that it actually works and not hanging up like Opera does.
Its user-friendly with finger screen panning and zoom in-out. It displays all the page at 100% giving the feel of a real desktop broweser.
The feature tha really pulled the trigger with this browser is its build in modules to load youtube and the like sites with embeded video. It actually works -albeit the perfomance is around average, but still!

Gave a go at kinami's(?) free player aswell. After a rather easy registration you enter into the player's menu. It works like a media center front but focused towards internet services like youtube, flick, shoutcast and many more.
The video perfomance on Youtube is excellent. Which with Skyfire you get the ability to watch youtube video its nowhere as fast as with kinami.
The shoutcast also works very nicelly with easy search engine and predefined categories to choose from. Streaming music doesnt get interrupted and when you close the player it actually keeps on playing (apparently it gets minimized and keeps on running).

I installed the TCPMP player to see if the PDA can play DIVX files. And not surprisingly it does! The quality is nice but the speed suffers from freezes. Its watchable but it wont substitute your desktop player for sure! I watched a Sanctuary episode and it was nice to have for sure :) I have to note though that when i go into full screen it freezes evenmore. Maybe a player that can downgrade the bitrate will work seamingly.. Any proposals ?

I left the last bit for the end. I installed a desktop front called "SPB Mobile shell" that really transformed Wm6.5 into a next gen OS.
Don't get me wrong. WM6.5 is an improvement compared to the 5version but the SPB shell is where the OS gets a boost and rides the rocket for the moon.

The visuals are incredible and the new menu you get is amazing! It feels like Vista or Windows7 there are not many words to explain how it feels unless you install it. You can modify the SPB desktop (the normal wm6.5 desktop still exists and you are able to navigate it) and add/remove widgets like weather (coolio!), time, connection status, file manage, msn and what not.
The biggest drawback is the memory consumption that really tightens up the available memory left for any other running apps.
For that reason and only im not gonna buy it straight ahead but lets it bloom with the passing of the days and see how it turns out. Its a really amazing front end.

Glad your enjoying it! Instead of TCPMP, I recommend coreplayer (commercial but has a trial). It plays &
720p videos on my Mio, without any freezing, even in fullscreen. I think there is also a free pocketdivx player. One of the disadvantages of 6.5 is activesync is not working. It will probably be fixed in the final version.

I surprisingly realized that in my case ActiveSync works much better than when the device was under CE 4.0. It connects every single time when the USB cable is connected.

What have I done? Well, when I first connected my Touch-Cruise to my XP PC (I hate Vista!), XP recognized the USB device but found no driver for it and failed to embed the device. So I took the CD shipped with the product and installed the base setup on my XP. After that, everything went OK. The device could be seen by the OS and the connection easily established with ALL the 3 devices.

The ActiveSync installed by that setup was 4.5.0 (Build 5096) and the msi file about 7.7 MB.

So far everything work as a dream - all things considering. Coreplayer got installed, it opens, but when i try to load a divx movie from its own menu it freezes for a bit and exits (crashes?).

I manage to fine tune TcpMP and i'm pretty much satisfied with its perfomance now.

I had to deactivate dither and set the video driver to null or framebuffer. Now it runs fast :)

How is the English WM6.5 comming? I wonder if i can expect a greek version in the near version aswell?

I know this is not the best place to type in a question irrelevant to P550/350 roms but im wondering, are the PNA's essentially what PDAs where before they got intergrated with the mobile phone?

Can they get upgraded with cooked ROM's like the normal PDAs do? Will they be missing external buttons? (like the MIO has the power off and 3 more programmable buttons).

I would really appreciate an answer since i can find really cheap PNAs in the market ( as opposed to the eclipsed PDAs leaving me with a PDA+mobile=Mobile-Windows device which is EXPENSIVE).

If I interpreted correctly your question, can a cheap unknown brand PNA paid 30 USD on Ebay be flashed with a smart Rom to become a complete PDA with all the features as MP3 player, Divx player, agenda, weather, Wi-fi...

In my understanding, a Rom is something that is written for a precise device and works only with that particular hardware. A Rom that runs well on Mio P550 does not necessarily run on a HP PDA. You flash it on the HP and you will likely loose it if you manage to complete the operation.

Another point is that you can't find a lot of those genius of Chefs willingful to cook Roms for every device found in the market. Look at the MIO P530/P550 and the Airis T620 that have (nearly) the same hardware. There must be several thousands of those devices sold all over the world and guess how many known Chefs have cooked a Rom for it? Just one! (CrashOverHead).

Good point JV. For a moment i forgot that roms are hardware-based like our P550 is for and Airis too.

On the other hand there should be win-mobile roms cooked for a few PNAs (just a guess though).

Did you manage to complete the cooking of WM6.5 FR for HTC Touch Elf/Elfin? I know Airis and Mio are not the same as HTC but we really envy the Elf community for the shoot of adrenaline you provided them with via your superb rom.

What version of WinMo are you using?
You are going to lose all your data, unfortunatly, but your Mio can be fixed :o

Nice to have you back! I thought you were so upset with CrashOverHead who (you think) had missed the "set" deadline of end 2009 for the final 6.5 EN ROM that you decided to just fade...away!

Jokes apart, I fear we'll have litlle chance to see one day this Rom as there are more and more new devices with more capable HW that spending time to cook for "obsolete" technology devices like MIO P550 or Airis t620 is less and less rewarding. I only hope I'm wrong because I love my P550 running WM6.5. It's so stable now. Unpredictable failures are now part of the past...

In this failure we know for sure of 2 things:

1. The battery is OK
2. The screen is OK
- Like you've already done, I would try first to hard-reset. But this time I would try to let it in this off position over night. Then I try again the day after.
- If it still doesn't work then I only hope that you have a backup of your device somewhere on your PC like MoonScapex mentioned earlier. The only reason is that you'll have likely to low format the device and reflash your Rom. Doing that will set everything on your device to factory values.

But before doing anything like that, would you be able to do a test and make sure your device can go all right to the blue screen for Rom administration (Hold the joystick down, press reset hole with your stylus then release the stylus while continuing to keep pressed the joystick until a blue screen appears)? At least if this works, we know we might have a chance to save the device.

The version of Windows running on my P550 was CE 4.0.

I've done all you've mentioned. For data, fortunately I have sync with my PC 2 days before my P550 dead. I can bear with losing all data in the device.

No matter how I reset it, it canNOT go to the "blue" screen; it can only go to the Mio splash screen. That's it. Please teach me how to do a low level format in order to save this device. Bear in mind that this device cannot be recoginzed by my PC by connecting it with the USB cable.

If the device can't go blue screen then we won't be able to do either the low format or flash the Rom.

The connection to the PC via USB is less critical at this stage because you can manage from your PC (only) to copy the Rom file to the SD card and flash the device from the SD card.

I would insist in trying different positions of the joystick (push down, pull down). One thing to remember: keep the joystick in the pressed position, reset and pull out your stylus from the reset hole, continue to keep it pressed until the blue screen appears.

On my P550 I've been using Resco Today trial version that expired today. It provides amongst others, a function to increase/decrease the backlight to save battery life.

I first thought it's a matter of values in registry (HCU/ControlPanel/BackLight) but I was wrong. Partially, because changing registry values works for the Timeout with AC and Battery (in seconds) but for the screen brightness, it doesn't work.

Do you have any idea on how to change the brightness level of the backlight?

Reset P550 and I waited 1 hour, black screen, I removed the battery , left 24 hours and nothing.

Please help me with fresh copy WM_6.1_English_v2.1_P550 , new version V2.2 BETA English or another version in English WM 6.1 .

Personal conclusion, if the WM 6.1 ROM http://dl.free.fr/jok65wZqA downloaded at NO ERROR, then it is a compatibility problem with P550. It is better to UPDATE BIOS before instal ROM or else. Please tell me how best
