Backup before ROM update

I'm thinking of updating my T-Mobile UK MDA Vario ROM (currently I have version 1.3.2.2 ENU, date: 9/25/05), mainly hoping it will be faster/smoother. Will there be a big difference?

Is there a way I can backup all info so that data and programs will be reinstalled? Or will I have to do this manually for everything?

1. there will be a HUGE difference in speed. Upgarding is REALLY recommended.
