Is there anyway to make the contact picture of a friend bigger in the dialer screen?

You can try the Eten Dialer. It has a larger piture frame than the standard dialer.

How does one go about creating his own dial background. I'd like to have my pics in the back of the dial screen. But i can't find how they create those skins :(
