View Full Version : Change from JP to EN for use in Japan?

Just went to the Softbank store (formerly Vodafone Japan) and saw the X01HT (Hermes). It looks great, but it is WM5 in Japanese. I have read a few posts about needing a new ROM to change languages. Is this something I could realistically consider?
For all you experts, will any of the existing (cooked, baked, whatever) English ROMs work on the Softbank version of the HTC hermes, and still have the device function as a mobile phone in Japan?
If yes, then I will pour through the site some more to figure out the details.
TIA

Read Upgrading FAQ #1 on the hermes wiki, it answers your question:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeFAQ
Then download any english rom for the Hermes from here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades
And read upgrading FAQ #5 if your device has a non-english keyboard.

According to some Japanese people who bought SoftBank X01HT, it has special protection that avoid booting without effective SoftBank SIM card, and uses new access point setting for flatrate internet connection.
Worse than all, it CANNOT unlock with imei-check.co.uk or any existing unlock solution!
I guess all settings may be contained as CAB file in Extended_ROM, however still I never confirm and get it yet, since I have no plan to buy X01HT (I already have another Hermes).
If anybody who have X01HT read here, please upload the contents of Extended_ROM into ftp://xdaupload:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/
So as of now, I DON'T recommend to update (change) Japanese to English ROM, until more information about X01HT are collected, especially how to restore connection setting and bypass SIM-absent protection.
FYI... the "PC Site Direct" of SoftBank is Japan's first real flatrate internet for 3G mobile without WAP proxy.
You can use Skype or video streaming unlimitedly, however it blocked SSL and some TCP ports (not confirmed all ports yet), so you cannot use Direct Push and wireless ActiveSync with Exchange Server (SoftBank said they will support Direct Push in near future, however...).

Thanks for your warning. But I'm not sure if my situation is the same. I want to use the X01HT with a Softbank SIM card and EN menus. Will installing Extended ROMs for English work with me in that situation?

Quick answer is no. You cannot change the ROM of X01HT yet. Wait until someone finds the way.

Hi, I have been reading all about upgrading Extended ROMs for the last hour, I have downloaded JASJAM_WWE_1.20.305.3_1.20.305.104_1.07.03.10_ship and am ready to flash my unlocked X01HT, but I can't figure out how to actually do it?
Is it done in ActiveSync? Because my version is in Japanese and nothing shows up on my computer. If there is a separate utility, please point me in the right direction. There isn't a readme in my ROM file.
TIA

your comment says that you do not know what you are doing... upgrading the ext rom and burning a rom are totally different things.
anyway, i suppose you wanna burn another rom. rom files are usually archived. just uncompress the archived file to get all necessary files. then, run ROMUpgradeUt.exe and follow the instruction.
if you do not understand the instruction completely, you might better consider giving yourself a second thought before you make it a brick... softbank might charge you the full price of the unit (85,000 yen?) for repair or exchange in the worst case. just a kind warning...
i recommend you read wiki well until you understand basics... good luck.

what you did is not clearly explained.
nothing shows up when you do what? there is no separate utility. everything is stored in the rom archives.
good point. there was no readme in the docomo archive, either.

Now that's a reply I can use. My mistake was assuming that the Extended ROMs includes the ROM, but it turns out it's the other way around. Now that I downloaded the ROM, all is clear.
Thank to all.

qtotter, thanks for your help. I am now seeing English on my X01HT!! But there are a few more outstanding issues I need to address, which I will ask here, and then continue to search for an answer:
Q: Activesync on my desktop is still in Japanese. Anyway to convert that to English?
I'm basically following the steps dandare123 and you outlined to switch to English. see the post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=280566&page=7&highlight=softbank+x01ht)
Q: It's not clear if you let the iMate extended ROMs install or not. I did. Then I moved the Softbank extended ROMs to the extended ROM folder and hit 'autorun'. Both times the installer seemed to hang at the very end, and I just reset. the Hermes seemed to be working, but I don't know if I am missing anything important. Thoughts?
Q: I installed Skype and made a skype call. Worked fine, except the output went to the speakerphone and I couldn't switch to either the earpiece or the bluetooth headset paired in headset mode.
Q: speaking of bluetooth, I can pair my headset, but can't seem to get audio onto it. I haven't tried just the phone to the bluetooth headset, but should I be able to get the system audio onto the headset?
Many thanks in advance.

uninstall japanese activesync. download english activesync from microsoft.com and install it.
It's not clear if you let the iMate extended ROMs install or not. I did. Then I moved the Softbank extended ROMs to the extended ROM folder and hit 'autorun'.
autorun is used when you hard-rest the device. if you want to use softbank ext rom, delete everything in the ext rom, copy all the files from softbank ext rom files to the ext rom, and perform hard-reset. (although i don't understand why you need softbank ext rom...)
I installed Skype and made a skype call. Worked fine, except the output went to the speakerphone
that's normal. pocket skype does not support phone speaker or bt headset yet.
Q: speaking of bluetooth, I can pair my headset, but can't seem to get audio onto it.
i would say bt is so complex... anyway, check what you called "my headset" and its supporting profiles. if it supports A2DP, you can use it as stereo audio headset. if not, it is a headset you can use as a mobilephone speaker and a microphone.
btw, hermes A2DP is great! it was much better than i expected. i can use a bt headphone unit i bought for my ipod!!

thou, i could not use it with htc universal (qtek9000.)

qtotter, you have been so helpful. I'm going to search for a new BT headset with AD2P profile for skype.
So my one remaining problem is that I can't connect to Softbank's 3G network. I was following the instructions as detailed by dandare123 in a separate post, link above. I just repeated everything in the following order:
- flashed the with (iMate) JASJAM_WWE_1.20.305.3_1.20.305.104_1.07.03.10_ship
- reset before the iMate ExtendedROMs were installed (because it hung the first time)
- installed the it4Cat tweaker to unhide the /Extended_ROM folder
- copied the Softbank ExtendedROMs over to the /ExtendedROM folder
- and 'autoran' the Softbank ExtendedROMs to a successful completion.
This time, I noticed that the softbank connection was automatically installed, with the APN=open.softbank.ne.jp. I'm assuming that the password is correct.
But when I try to access the internet via Softbank, I get "Cannot Connect for an unknown reason..."
Any ideas? should I run the iMate Extended ROMs?
TIA.

Check. It's set to PAP. Is there any chance one of the iMate ExtendedROMs needs to be installed? That seems like it's the only thing that I may have done different from dandare123.
everything else seems to be working fine.

that's funny...
ext roms include bug fixes, career settings, and apps provided by careers.
i don't think ext rom has something to do with the internet connection in your case since i have been using the open softbank internet access without installing anything from the ext rom.
i manually set up an connection myself, and it works with open softbank perfectly.
if it does not work out on your phone, there could two possible reasons; a) your connection setting is not correct or b) there could be a signal issue in your area.

I just created the following connection manually
APN:open.softbank.ne.jp
ID:open
PASSWD:o z R t 8 n 2 9 R a 1 P s d 0 7
still no go. One thing I notice is that I am on the 'UMTS Vodafone' network and instead of 3G I see a 'U' at the top. Is that correct?

where did you get the Pass for the connection? I will try this tonight on my HTC Universal and on my Hermes when HTC Taiwan will send me this unit back... I could not find it on my X01HT
Also for the unlocking SIM stuff, did someone find out that is the PT_SIMlock_Empty.CAB is for?

This is normale, on both my HTC Universal and my HTC Hermes I have the U of UMTS, the 3G is just a icon tweak.

Strange thing. I just did another hard reset and re-installed both the JasJam/iMate and Softbank ExtendedROMs automatically. The Softbank connection was automatically created --- and this time it worked! I didn't even have to enter the APN connection data.
Maybe you just have to repeat it a few times until it sticks? Either way, I can confirm that everything is working now.
Thanks to all for your help and patience.

I wanna make sure if you have taken all the spaces out of the password when you type it?
Some ROMs show "3G" and some others show "U" for 3G network. Which icon you get on the screen simply depends on which ROM you use.

@Mixersoft
im glad it worked smoothly...i did it too...like a week ago. and i also had to hard reset to get the connection back.
so far its all fine, but i have a problem with Japanese input...i cannot type Japanese anymore...which means i cannot use the x01ht for work.
Also, i got the BT working using the BT Hack mentioned in the instructions on how to change from Japanese to English.
Is your Japanese keyboard still working???
