Hello!
I want to buy one stereo BT headset for my Universal and I can' decide which one!
I'm considering on buying Sony Ericsson HSD-DS970, but I've seen that Nokia has HS-12W (with Radio builtin, which is great)!.
So, I want to know your opinion about both of them so I can decide!
I think the price is similiar, Is the sound similar also? What about BT connection good on both?? etc????
Please tell me what to do!
Thanks

Deiota:
I have a Nokia HS-12W and i have to say that:
BT Connection - In the range of 1,5 m its very good. If you want more range forget it.
Sound Quality - very good, almost excelente. But its, for sure, one of his kind
Micro Quality - perfect.
Radio- A great plus.
Caller ID - A shame. It only shows the callers numer.
Remote controls - Woks fine
Battery - Weak. This is one the aquiles knees of the HS-12W. You can expect 6-8 hours of intensive use.
Material- Bulk, very good quality.
Overall: I'm very happy with HS-12W. The only issues i have is the battery time and the callers ID, but in general I'ts great (I use it every day)
And I do realy think (i had the same doubt that you have now) that its better that the Sony Ericsson HSD-DS970, because of Radio, Material and Sound Quality.

I'm having the SE HBH-DS970
Comparing spec-wise between the two
Nokia seems to have
a) longer battery life
b) a built-in radio
c) a built-in clip
but it's
a) unable to handle concurrent Bluetooth connections
b) unable to delete individual radio station
Both claim
a) can resume music playback after a call
b) ability to display caller name besides caller number
Well, Sony can't do it on my QTEK9000 aka Universal. I believe they'll work if they're use with their respective company products

For fixing/enabling the caller ID name issue, has anyone try this BT extension:
http://www.jetwaremobile.com
I believe the beta below is a newer version:
http://www.jetwaremobile.com/beta.html
Can you guys who own the Nokia headset try it out and report back if its showing the Caller ID name or not?
Thanks.

I am using both BT on O2 Atom. In my opinion Sony sounds great and has better battery life. But it looses the BT pairing connection which Nokia doesnot. This is issue of BT version which your handset is using the O2 Atom is using BT v 1.2 which is the same as Nokia BT HS-12 headset version. On this Nokia BT head set resume after playback and everything works great. On sony intially pairing does work but after some idle time it looses its connection (This is because it uses BT v 2 that's why handshake problem). On both there is no name caller ID display only number. This is MS stack problem. So I suggest you should first check the BT version of the handset before deciding. I am also using Sony - Ericsso M600 and paired HBH-DS970 BT stereo to this handset where everything works great as desired. Absolutely no problem.

OK, here's my NOKIA HS-12W vs SE HBH-DS970 showdown!!!
Tested with QTEK 9000 (with the latest A2DP ROM) and Conduits Pocket Player v3.0 (with 'Resume playback after phone calls' feature enabled)
Size, Weight and appearance
Nokia is slightly larger and heavier than Sony. Sony is wholly plastic whereas Nokia is half metallic. Appearance-wise Sony is glossy black whereas Nokia is of metallic color due to the stainless steel top casing
Button convenience
Sony allows you to feel the button difference without looking at them. For Nokia you'll need see the buttons in order to see the function of the button. Nokia's keylock prevent accidental pressing of the wrong button
Neck Strap, clip, ear plugs/muffs and headset container
Nokia comes with a built-in clip whereas you have to get one separately for Sony. Sony comes with rubber-insert type ear plugs whereas Nokia comes with standard handphone earmuffs. Sony comes with a plastic container for its headset which is nice
Pairing and Profiles
Both pair equally fast. Sony comes only with 2 profiles : Wireless Stereo and Hands Free. Nokia comes with 3 profiles : Wireless Stereo, Hands Free and Headset
Audio
Loudness - With Conduits Pocket Player set to the maximum Nokia can be adjusted to give a much louder volume.
5m range detection - In open space both can play well without breaking up in music
Full Treble setting, Full Bass & Treble setting & Headphones setting - Nokia is slightly better than Sony in terms of treble, however, Sony's bass is slightly stronger
Music resume after a call - Not possible with Sony. You need to exit the player program (i.e. open my QTEK 9000) and then re-start Pocket Player and AVRCP controls will work. Alternatively, you can do a refresh to your bluetooth to achieve the same result. Possible with Nokia (no need to exit Pocket Player and re-start Pocket Player for it to play) but AVRCP controls not working anymore. You need to turn off Nokia and then turn-on to reconnect and AVRCP controls will work ok i.e. I don't need to open my QTEK 9000 as oppose to Sony
AVRCP controls
Both work with my QTEK 9000's lid OPEN and CLOSE without problem
Caller Name and Number Display
Both cannot display caller name, only caller number. JETware Handsfree Extension v1.11 does not work for both devices
Voice Dialing - For Nokia, its not available during a call or when you're listening to music or radio. With Sony you can dial out when listening to music
Battery Life
According to specs Nokia has about 8hrs of talktime and standby time of 200hrs. Sony has 4 - 6hrs of stereo playback. Don't trust Sony battery status display - the full charge keeps being shown on the display for about 60% of time, and then the rates decreases dramatically and the headset turns off.
Price
Nokia is slightly more expensive than Sony, about US$38 more
Major difference
Nokia works as a radio too but the stations cannot be individually deleted. Sony has multipoint bluetooth feature

Here you say that SE DS970 will show contact names with Jetware, right?
How is that???
I'mk pretty confuses at that point!
That's the main funcionality that makes me buy a headset (nokia or S). the display! If it doesnt show me contact names, perhaps I wont be biuing afterall!
The thing is, I get bored always opening my Universal (specially when it has a case on it!)!
The headset display will prevent fom doing it :D

Yes, I did manage to get contact name display on the SE HBH-DS970 on my 1st try.
Subsequent tries after I delete and re-install JETWware proves otherwise.
Till today I still could not get contact name to be displayed on both the SE HBH-DS970 & Nokia HS-12W

Was lucky to able to try both, see attached Pics.
I owned a Nokia & borrowed a Sony to try.
Look, Sony looks cool and smaller than Nokia
Earpiece, Sony fits very well, Nokia is a bit loose for people with bigger ears (even with the sponge)
Sound, Sony has more punch in bass but Nokia has clearer sound

Well, I suppose its a compatibility issue for PDA and the HS-12W
CWKJ

Nokia Phone with HS-12W of course must work together.
But the topic here is about HTC Universal with stereo headset. HTC only give A2DP to Qtek and not the rest of the Universal and no HTC provided A2DP Stereo Headset for Qtek. So all of us first have to hack the universal and try some other brand for stereo headsets.
Jetware is supposed to bridge the PDA caller id problem with headsets, but does not seems to work with HS-12W.
I have the "error" when using 'NokiaHS-12W.jcf' with Jetware 1.11, but after installing 1.20, 'NokiaHS-12W.jcf' is able run like *.exe when you double click on it. But still does not show caller id on hs-12w.

The JETWARE page does not say its compatible with QTEK Universal. The developer may have tested with other Universal(s) from HTC with some hacked ROM - who knows?

I used to be a big Nokia fan before I start with Universal.
History of Phones I have used
1. Alcatel One Touch Easy
2. Nokia 8210
3. Nokia 8250
4. Nokia 3100 (my other better half is using as second phone)
5. Nokia 6170 (my 8 year old son is using)
6. Dopod 900 (Universal)
It is a pity that Nokia cannot even get their own products compatible.
Look at the Nokia's Smartphones recently, all are pieces of junk compare to Sony Ericson (I have never used SE Phones, except for buying it as a gift for my better half as her very firs phone many many years ago).
Phone my better half used
1. SE (cannot remember the model)
2. Nokia 8100
3. Nokia 6510
4. Nokia 7270
5. Planning a Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes)
Although M$ phones is full of bugs like their PC OS, something they have to sleep and dream how to overcome, but the other phones with more features adding on are starting to have a lot problems too. So the only one advantage which other phones do not have is the upgradability by the owners themselves which M$ phones is able to if you know how. For the rest of the phones like those I have used, I do not even know how to upgrade (beside going to service centre) when there is a problem.

Yes, I have tried (in Qtek 9000), but no luck. No caller ID. Even with the external setting for the Nokia. Why it still fails? Why they have an "especial" setting for the Nokia that doesn't work? Is this such a complex problem? (With the Nokia N80 it seems like it was another - and so much better - headphone). I'm puzzled...

I had some email-exchange with the people from jetware trying to get my HS-12w to work. Here's where I am:
- CID display works with 1.20.161.26
- You need to change the nokia patch (before applying). In the file change "DefaultCS=2" to "DefaultCS=0". Alternatively after appliying the patch change the value in the registry.
- you have to make sure, that no special characters (eg. "," etc.) are in the "displayed name". Verify your contacts directory. If it shows something like "last_name, firstname" it wont work. Somehow you need to get rid of the ",". For outlook users I think you can do this before synhronizing on your PC. I use Lotus Notes & MNotes to synchronize. I had to change a formula there. Now my uni shows "last_name first_name" and it works.
- unfortunately, it only shows "once". Eg. after scrollig the full name it switches back to the number. No clue why (I did a lot of traces, the beta version generates a log), as it doesn't show in the log.
In short: it nearly works :-)
However, what I'm disappointed is the responsiveness of the JetWare folks. I bought the software but it takes em quite long to reply to support questions (even though the website and autoresponder claims answer within 24h). Especially as I sent them very detailed description and logs.
So keep on watching on the beta site, and see if above works for you. Let me know if you have other findings.

13th November 2006, 09:42 PM
Thanks "Clumsy"! I will try your way (it seems a little complicated only because I never had changed the registry and stuff like that. But, one day i have to learn so...)
I also have brought the software and i'm also a little dissappointed with the JetWare folks. If they annouce that they had solved the "caller ID" problem in HS-12W, the software must work without external tricks. And, of course, must show the "caller ID" more that a few nano-seconds.
Thanks again

JLCor, the Nokia preference file is just a plain text file. Any normal text-editor will do to change that value. Just double-click the file again on your device afterwards.

OK, I've done the tweak in the NOKIA file and still it doesn't show a simple 'Home' (without the curlies) from my SIM card
In fact it makes my system slow in some way and does not display caller name
BTW, did you install the sdkcerts.cab?

FOSA:
yes I did install the SDKcerts, also you need to make sure you uninstall any previous versions. Also I guess it would be good to do a soft reset after installing everything, as it may be that solved my issue this morning.
Did you go to the "advanced options" and enable caller-id there? you still need to do this even if you load the nokia file.
I assume on the uni itself it can correctly resolve the "home"?

Not really... mine currently works stable...
If you like you can post/send the log-file the software produces, proably I can see something in there (it's in \program files\Jetware\btagatlog.log).
If a call arrives it should have something like:
11/11/2006 22:18:28 <- AT+VGS=07
11/11/2006 22:18:32 -> +CIEV: 5,3
11/11/2006 22:18:40 -> RING
11/11/2006 22:18:40 -> +CLIP: "last_name first_name",129
in it.
BTW: I use Ivan's Beta8, but I don't think thats the issue.

Just installed (and deinstalled again) the "production" software of Jetware. Unfortunately the 1.20 version does not work anymore with the nokia HS-12W. It seems that this version does not handle the "CIDNameFirst" registry entry anymore correct. So I went back to 1.20.161.26 which works smoothly again. (Along the description above).
I sent them again an update (probably the last one as I'm getting upset doing a lot of debugging and feedback and just not getting any reply).
The good: it seems to work with the beta version
the bad: the support from that company...

I want to make an important announcement regarding the NOKIA HS-12W.
Finally, Concuits Pocket Player v3.01 managed to resume music playback after an incoming/outgoing call using my NOKIA HS-12W bluetooth headset on my QTEK 9000 running the latest A2DP ROM.
The trick - You have to wait for 12 - 13 sec after a call ends
Previously, I believe I don't have the patience and expected the music to resume after a few seconds but this accidental discovery yesterday prompted me to test further and report this important find here.

2.Install SDKCERTS.cab
3.Install Jetware 1.24 build
4.Run NOKIA HS-12W.JCF on your device via your storage card...It will be recognised as a Jetware settings update and then run it to update settings.
5.I then Soft Reset my device...
6. Enabled CallerID in the jetware software
7. Applied registry HACK (Do a forum search) to be able to change my contact to FIRSTNAME LASTNAME i.e with NO COMMA
and voila...It worked for me....

If I can't find the link then I can try to post the software on here (If I'm allowed AND when I find out how to do it!).
To get Caller ID working on my XDA Exec (UNIVERSAL)
USERS PERFORM THIS AT THEIR OWN RISK (IT WORKED FOR ME) BUT MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU....
I am running Helmi 3.5 AKU ROM with Radio 1.14 on an O2 XDA EXEC
1.remove any previous of Jetware.
I'll try to POST the link when I get home.
Kaiser Sosey

FOSA, great comparison! Just recommended it in my new A2DP headphones roundup.
