Here is the first ROM update for the Palm Treo 750 (HTC Cheetah) from the still unreleased Cingular branded device!
As no one has started a wiki page for this device yet I did it myself, but I am not willing to mantain it as I don't have a Treo, so take this as a call to Treo750 wiki editors :)
Treo750 wiki page on XDA-Developers (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Cheetah)
Here's the link to the ROM upgrade files on XDA-Developers ftp:
Treo750_Cingular_ROM.zip
(Moderator NOTE: Sorry guys, we had to remove the file from the FTP since we've been told that it violates Palm's Intellectual Property rights.)
Upgrading instructions:
EDIT: Seems that "Step 1" is only a diagnostics image, and is not needed to perform the upgrade, go straight to "Step 2".
Insert the reader w/card into your USB, after the PC recognizes the card right click on the drive letter. Select Format from the options and make sure FAT32 is selected as the file system then select start.
Also, you need to copy the files to the memory card one at a time; DIAG file first and then delete the DIAG prior to loading the IMG file second.
Step 1:
-Copy the ‘CheeDIAG.nbh’ file to the root directory of a miniSD card. Note: Windows Mobile recognizes updates only from FAT32 formatted cards.
-Insert the card into the device.
-Press and hold both the PTTApp Button (lowest button on left side of device) + Pin Reset (next to miniSD card slot). You will be prompted to press the ‘End’ (red power) key to start the update. This step takes only a few seconds to complete. Once the flash is done, you will see: ‘Model ID: Palm Treo 750’ displayed by the device.
Step 2:
-Copy the ‘CHEEIMG.nbh’ file to the root directory of a miniSD card.
This step takes about 5 minutes to complete.
-Hard reset the device once the device indicates the upgrade has been completed. To hard-reset, hold the ‘End’ (red power) key while pressing the pin reset button. Answer “yes” to “Erase all data” prompt.
Step 3:
Verify the device software via the device <start><settings><system tab><about><phone tab> The device should display firmware version on the resulting screen.
For all those anxious minds who haven't still showed up here, (Treo750 upgrading forum still empty, wtf?!?) I can tell you that the upgrade comes in NBH file format as in the Hermes, and the same tools (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_NBH) can be used to extract the ROM parts ;)
Enjoy! http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Dont forget that the 750 (or Knight Rider as Palm call it) doesnt have a Extended ROM :(
From the CHEEIMG.nbh you can extract 5 components:
- SPL (0x200)
- GSM (0x300)
- OS (0x400)
- SplashImage (0x600)
- uP (0x800)
From the CheeDIAG.nbh you can extract only the Diag part (0x500).
Is this a newer rom than the vodafone rom and does it have hsdpa enabled anyone know
It is newer than the Voda rom, build date is Oct 12 2006.

Didn't seem to work for me. I'm stuck at red text at the top of the screen that says '00058002' and below it says 'Loading...' but nothing happens after that.
This was using the first file on a 1 GB card. I formatted it FAT32 and copied only the first file to it.

So are you stuck with a bricked 750? I just got mine this morning but won't try this update until I see it successfully done a few times :)

No, thank goodness. It seems like it's not reading the file on the SD card so if I just reset again, everything boots fine.

Probably a dumb question but... have you formatted the card in Fat32?
Most of the SD cards are Fat16 formatted by default.

Its customized for cingular (meaning that it has cingular splash screen and some settings pre-customized) but it will work on any Treo750 device and on any network.

I don't own a treo750 and I can't test, but from what I've extracted from the upgrade files I can see that the 1st step is only a diagnostics SD card wich is *probably* not needed to perform the update... this means that you can go straight into step 2 of the upgrade process: copy the CHEEIMG.nbh file in the root folder of your FAT32 formated sd-card, this should start the upgrade.

Did it! Worked perfectly. I'm loading up things right now...so far, so good. My firmware went from 1.12.0a.00 to 1.17.20.00
You'll loose your Vodaphone Business theme but get the Cingular ringtone...lol
Goodlink loaded on it just fine. I'm letting it finish syncing all my data again before I shut the phone down to see if there are Cingular splash screens. The beginning tutorial after the hard reset shows a picture of a Cingular manual on the last step talking about reading the docs for more info.
If you're going to do it, like pof said, the first file I guess is a diagnostic. I didn't load that one and just did the actual image.

Any idea if this rom has HSPDA enabled? Also did you still have the ability to synch the device time to the network time?

So there is no way to create a backup of your rom to protect you against a bad update? That's pretty scary. I guess if you have phone insurance it's not as scary.
You can update the imgfs on these devices right? Isn't that what the romtools is for. And I think itsutils can perform writes also. But I guess they don't support reflashing the whole rom. hmm.

You can write with pdocwrite, but it is not "safe" unless you know really well what you're doing or you could brick your phone.
On new HTC devices (I can only talk for sure in the Hermes, but I guess the Treo, Artemis, and Trinity as well) the bootlaoder only allows you to flash signed code, and we don't have HTC keys to sign our 'cooked' roms, so even if you manage to make a valid rom you will not be able to flash it :( this means rom cooking is not possible (yet!) on these devices.

Just tried my hands at the upgrade.
No way around getting the first file to execute. Kept stopping at the Red numbers, and displaying "Loading". Tried 512MB card, 1GB card, and 2GB card. All formatted on my PC for 32 bits.
Then I just went to step #2.
Loaded up great on a 512MB card, it took a bit to perform updagrade 5 - 6 minutes.
As instructed did the hard reset.
WOW ! WOW ! WOW !
The phone is a speed demon now. It really zips along between commands.
Signal appears better. At my desk at home the Voda ROM would fluctuate in strength from 2 - 4 bars. With the Cingular Rom, it is steady at 4 bars.
We'll see how the puppy behaves during a full day of use tomorrow.
Only reason why I really wanted to update is that since I am in US, the Cingular ROM may be "tuned" for US. ALthough I use Tmobile, we roam on Cingular when we have no signal. We roam on the 850 Cingular band.
After a few days, I'll post follow up.

did any of you guys (that did the rom update) notice any roaming with the 750v before you did the update?
If yes, did it change post update?
What else is different?
Thanks,

That sounds very promising!
However, the skeptic in me wonders if this might just be Cingular seeing the same signal strength as Voda's ROM, but assigning it more bars to fool us and make us happy... ;-)

Apologies for this noob question: it seems I need an miniSD card reader to make this config change work, is that true? Or can I just copy the files onto the card via the explorer and proceed?
TIA for your answer.

@Arkay: you can just copy the files.
@justin801: The PTTApp button i guess is only on Cingular's version of the Treo750 because they will come out with Push-to-Talk functionality, on the Vodafone branded Treo750 I think this button is called Media button, and it is the 3rd button on the left side of the phone, under the volume button (others correct me if i'm wrong, i don't have a treo to look at).

I've tried (not knowing if the miniSD is formatted to FAT32 file system as I don't have a card reader) and it didn't work. :(
Copied the file from my PC directly to root directory of the miniSD card.
All I get is screen with bands of color (red on top) and some ID tags and with "USB" at the bottom band. Nothing else happens.
Soft reset brings everything back and nothing seems amiss.
Is this the SD format problem?

Not that I'm the expert on this but do you still have a USB cable connected when you're trying this? If the card is formatted and you disconnect all cable and reset, it should work.

Just tried it with the USB cable disconnected and I get the same effect except it now says "Serial" at the bottom.
The codes on the screen are:"Palm Tr IPL-0.20" and "Palm Tr SPL-0.18.0000".
And how do I check if the card is formatted correctly? I couldn't format the card through the device itself or connection so cannot be sure it's FAT32 file system - how do I check that?

Sure I can :) I'm just saying that the ROM doesn't add anything of value other than Cingular phone on/off screens, the cingular ringtone and a couple of cingular websites in the favorites folder. If I wasn't on Cingular, I wouldn't want to see Cingular stuff on my phone.

But at the firmware version is higher that must surely mean some "under the hood" changes ?
Plus my Treo doesn't work with my BMW Bluetooth CarKit when all my friends WM5 devices do and that stucks.
I'd risk it just for that functionality

I've just completed the flash. No problem, as other users, could not get past diagnostic file, but once that got deleted, it went smoothly (4m 16s).
Couple of points:
I could not notice any significant difference performance wise from the shipped Vodafone software. I am on a 4-bar UMTS area, there are no radio fluctuations. Reports exactly the same. More significantly, I sincerely cannot say that the Treo is responding quicker. It certainly isn't responding slower. I'd say it's the same.
Cingular's 1.17.20 cake has MSN as its icing on the top. Some of the installed programs are redundant in the UK and amount to nothing other than URL links that lauch Internet Explorer. Network time, SMS threads, Voice Commands are all implemented (although the first has never produced any results for me with Vodafone!). Personally I find not having Vodafone's business theme a blessing (it's patchy, particularly if you use MagicButton as I do). I had never noticed MEMOs during a call, and that now shows as an option on the Menu. I find it quite useful but suspect was there all along.
HSDPA: Nope. 497.8 kb/s on bandwidthplace.com
Verdict:
If you use MSN (I do) upgrade as it's worth it. But you can install it separately without the need to mess about. It is likely that there are some improvements that are not yet visible and will become apparent with time. For now, it's a safe upgrade.

The Cingular rom doesn't do it either. That's because it's not the volume buttons that silences the ringer, it's the action/enter button in the middle of the D-Pad that silences the ringer :-)

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help because I'm starting to pull my hair out.
I just received my new Treo 750-v from Vodafone and the bloody thing is in Italian. Now, I thought you could change the language somewhere in the settings but no. I then tried to call Palm in England (I'm English you see) and got through to tech support. Tech support tell me that the 750-v is licensed to Vodafone (hence the "v") and that they don't have suport. So, you make the phone but don't have support! Strange!
Anyway the tech guy said you must call Vodafone support, well I live in Italy and have you ever tried calling tech support in Italy? (thats another post). So, tried to call tech support in England but there are no numbers for me to call from overseas.
So, I really would like to know if I can transfer the sofware on my phone into English. Or is the sofware somewhere that I can download. I have tried everything today and now my hair is falling out.
PLEASE HELP
Thanks,
Clarky
P.S. I'm not very technicaly minded so take it easy with me!

I have a 750v and when I first set it up and after a hard-reset, I had the option to choose the language. Don't know if yours is the same is mine, but you might try a hard-reset and see if you have you have an option to pick the language.... good luck!

I'm having a similar problem to Clarky7 above. I have a 750v but it's all in German. When I do a hard reset the only language options that I get are 5 variations on German.
Does anyone know where I can find an English ROM please???
Thanks in advance.

I live in Switzerland and it is impossible to find anything in English. Since I am thinking of buying the Treo 750v, I wrote an email to Palm with the same thing in mind... that Treos had the option of language selection after a hard reset. The reply was that the Treo 750v does not support such feature and advised me to order one in English. As a second proof, Swisscom, the official seller gives one the option to select the desired OS language when ordering.

Hi Again guys, still no more info in putting this thing in English. If I do a hard reset to see if it gives me a language option, will i lose all info? Seeing as I just got it, all I have are contacts and they are on my SIM.
I mean, if I hard reset will i have to load in windows mobile? I don't want to do that as it's the Italian disc.
I getting tired........why can't these things be simple?

if you read this thread from the begining you will see that the cingular rom upgrade described is in english. all you need to do is to follow the rom upgrade procedure and you will have an english 750v. yes you will loose all of your data.
hmm, it looks like I should read this thread from the begining, they removed the rom. I guess palm was bitching. Sorry guys

Me again!
Not only can I not get this phone put in English, but just downloaded the active sync on my PC and it won't sync with my phone. The disc is Italian, so is the problem window that pops up.
I'm starting to get annoyed with this phone.
Anyone want to buy it?
Maybe someone could burn me a copy of there English disc!!
Any advice would be great. So what actually happened to that ROM link that was removed. Is there no way of finding out where it can be found again?

Keep in mind that you are all asking for the OLD ROM Cingular initially put in the 750, which was found to have a TON of problems. Now that the 750 is coming out, hopefully someone will be able to extract the new one, then offer it to us. At least I hope so!

The new Cingular ROM? Not quite.
The first batch of Cingular 750's are rolling out WITHOUT HSDPA. It will be available in a "future update." And don't forget, this is Palm we're talking about! FUTURE could mean many things...
Besides, HSDPA is enabled with a very, VERY easy hack. And I never had problems with it, never had to reinstall, etc. HSDPA is no big deal IMO

I totally agree with patmannyc, I did install the Cingular ROM when it was released and performed the HSDPA hack, which was very easy...I am a heavy user and have had no problems. (Ok, I do reboot once in a great while, but we are talking about a Microsoft OS)

I need the CINGULAR ROM as it seems that the uploaded ones are not fitting ok becasue it is missing the .NBH file and looks that DUMPED ROMS cannot be used! :(
Can anybody give a megaupload link to freely download the ROM for all those that could not have downloaded it on time please!

Anyone know of a reg hack yet for the Treo 750v to get rid of the roaming icon? I'm still cingy blue & the phone always displays the roaming icon---I cannot assign phone rings specific to anyone it only rings the tone assigned to "roaming". I've never seen a phone with ability to assign a ring tone to "Phone:Roaming". I know it's not that big of a deal...but it's driving me crazy. I don't really want to upgrade to the Cingular ROM if I don't have to.
Help much appreciated.

Looks like people here are simplky ignoring the request for the ROM.
There are probably 2 reasons why you don't find the rom on FTP:
1. Cingular/Palm has requested it removed othterwise they would take actions against xda-developers.
2. The rom has loads of problems so it's not a plus to install it.
In a few weeks (I we may believe the rumors) there will be a new and stable rom from Vodavone even with a higher AKU so it would be a waste to install the instable rom.

@gpsenzo68
I asked many users here to help me with a Private Message (PM) linking me a rapidshare link where to download it.
This is without any responsability for the Forum admins. it is a simple user2user share.
More the Cingular ROM even if it give you no extra features will always be better than the Vodafone ROM in a fgoreign language (german in my case) where I don't understand a word.
It has been a big con from the Vodafone when they sold it to me. They said that the language could be changed at anytime.
And now? I pay 699 Euro for a crap PDA with no support at all in german language as in my country it was not on sale!!!
I am simply asking users to help me out to turn it at least in English and looks more people are interested just in promoting this very bad quality PDA rather giving a real help to a newbie like me trying hard to get it to work!
Sorry but it is 2 days I am looking all over to get it and NO CHANCE!

Voda UK has just release WM6, do you guys think I can use this upgrade for my phone?

hi
hope you can help! i downloaded the os image, formated my sd card, pressed and held the bottom button on the left of the phone , reset as described.
It flashes loading and 00068002, then goes to a red, green, blue and white stripped screen
In green stripe (Palm tr spl-0.21.0000)
in white stripe (serial)
and does nothing else?
could it be a faulty sd mini card?
how long should the format take on a 1gb card?
thanks

I have two Treo 750's to upgrade, one upgraded perfectly using the method in step 2, the other keeps presenting 00058002 using exactly the same card that was used to upgrade the first device using the same method...? any advice?

Yep, no joy... I even tried other images but this device just doesn't want to play.. :( The other one however will take any of the images and comes straight up with the upgrade screen...
