View Full Version : Has anyone yet succeeded in getting the E icon? (Cingular in US, HTC Tytn)

Hi all,
I've been reading that the registry hack to show the Edge icon (E) when connected the Edge network does not work on the Tytn. I'm on Cingular in the US with the original HTC Rom and 1.03 radio. Has anyone with a Tytn successfully been able to get an E icon? I either get a U or a G... never an E. And we clearly have Edge here.
Before getting the Tytn, I had the Cingular 2125 (HTC Faraday) and it only showed G, even when successfully on Edge. A quick registry hack fixed this. No such love with the Tytn...

From the HTC Hermes Frequently Asked Questions (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_FAQs) wiki page:
The reg tweak working for the previous models to show the [E] instead of [G] when you are on the EDGE network is not working on the Hermes :(

Do you want this just for cosmetic reasons, or for practical reasons?

Ha, Vijay, I love the icon you have! That's great.
I honestly want it for practical reasons. It appears it doesn't matter right now though. Hope the next HTC Rom will address this.

I've not investigated how or why the E/U icons are implemented for non UK phones, we only get 3g or G I guess. I can check it out, but are there extended rom customisations by your operator that you've skipped, perhaps?

When you say skipped, do you mean did I skip the installation of the programs from the Extended Rom on my first startup? No I did not skip it, I allowed everything from the Extended Rom to self-install on the first startup. Or do you mean have I skipped looking into the Extended Rom to see if there are other apps in there that may be customizable?

@vijay555: In the US we get either a U or G. Apparently, the "3g" icon replaces the "U" icon in the UK. AFAIK there is no E/G differentiation on any Hermes device. Either an Edge or a GPRS connection is signified with a "G"

So in other words it's harnessing full EDGE goodness at its full possible speed regardless of the G on the display, right?

Aaah, good to know, quod erat demonstrandum.
Re skipping extended rom, yes, I was referring to the extra install on first boot.

YES if you are in Edge territory you will use the Edge network even though the display says 'G'
