Can someone tell me if the T-Mobile MDA Compact III is wi-fi.
I notice from other forums which state that this version is not wi-fi enabled
Shouldn't be too difficult to edit the registry settings.

Well.. If you look at the review from MoDaCo, it is stated that theres no IRDA.
Apparantly CnetAsia says it has IRDA...
Kinda fishy...

HI,
T-Mobile Austria had the same wrong specs on their page.
The Mda compact III has no Wlan. This device is called HTC Hero AFAIK.
The HTC Artemis has Wlan (I think that O2 will sell this device)

no 3g no wi-fi.
Ok so its got bluetooth but so have many 50 quid pay as you go handsets too !!
Big deal its a neat size and built in gps receiver but its lack of connectivity

The HTC p3300 has Wi-Fi standard onboard. Local telecom providers however, are able to choose if they want features like Wi-Fi enabled or disabled. T-mobile Germany decided to sell the MDA Compact III with WiFi disabled (maybe to boost the GPRS usage?). T-mobile The Netherlands decided to let the Wi-Fi feature enabled.
I have a dutch T-mobile MDA Compact III, Model nr. ARTE110, that has WiFi enabled. Bought it btw for EUR 209,- + 15,75 monthly fee, which makes EUR 398,- in total :D.
Maybe the WiFi feature can be enabled/disabled by tweaking the registry or using another ROM?
And does anyone have suggestions how to unlock it?

the price of the phone shall be 239.95€ with a 15.75€ flex t-mobile abonnement and not 209,- like you mentionned. Therefore the total price reaches 428.95€ and not 398,-, reason why I asked you where you bought it.
Anyway price is still attractive but if you tell me the device is locked on t-mob neth, it doesn't worth one penny for my own.

We are both right. T-mobile raised their prices for the MDA Compact III at the Online Shop. I ordered it last friday (03-11) for 209,-. On tuesday they raised prices with 30,95, so now it's 239,95 with a 15,75 contract.

Hi Guys
I have tried to perform a rom update on my Mda Compact 3 using the HTC P3300 latest rom but the compact was having none of it.
It appears to 'drop out' after 3 per cent stating 'incorrect device'.
This is not the usual "incorrect vendor id" so I guess updating with a wi-fi enabled rom is not possible
Why have T-Mobile skimped on this essential feature is beyond me !!!

It has128 MB of internal memory.....It has got this fitted - BUT a fair amount of it is in use before you start loading programs etc. Don't be fooled by the sales hype, the device is a tad short on memory and if its had the WiFi disabled I would shop elsewhere to be honest - Mike

No WIFI for MDA Compact iii in the UK!
T-Mobile UK have amended the text so it no longer mentions Wifi, extracted here- "...Windows Media player, FM radio, Bluetooth and USB cable connectivity."

if you use total commander,
you can find some kind of "RemoveWiFi.provxml" in your /windows-directory.
annoyingly it stays hidden, even if you copy it to a pc, where you can't disable the "hidden"-flag in explorer.

Now we know some keys but not there (former) parameters/values. I need to find the keys and parameters and programs of a Wi-Fi enable ARTE110.

Very good!!! Great Info, thanks. I'm also quite active with reactivating wifi-capabilities of the mda c3. I would be interested in a registry dump of a mda c3 from the netherlands or so because those are wifi enabled...

ok, BAD. RemoveWiFi.provxml gets obviously parsed everytime windows starts... Which is crap because it deletes the relevant reg-entries for wifi. I managed to reconstruct the needed reg entries but on restart they are gone. So why not delete this f****ng file from /windows ? The answer is easy... you can't because windows does not want you to... ok, how to work around this kind of write protection.....

Disadvantage #1: Tomtom-Maps are big so you definitely NEED a SD-Card
Disadvantage #2: There is no Micro-SD Wifi-Adapter... This is not a charmer ;)
Plus in my opnion... if the hardware supports it... so why the hell not use it? just because of the software that says so? No, I'm sure we will be able to enable wifi in the future...

Considering the hardware is virtually the same as the Wizard I'm guessing that settings from there may work. I have the registry and all missing files from a Wizard, but I just need a way to stop them being removed after a reset.
A copy of the Netherlands registry would be very helpful...

There will be a micro SD Wi-Fi in future http://www.spectec.com.tw/products_detal.asp?dptype=w1sdw823. May be the size will not fit for MDA Compact III.

possibly just a little off the topic, but look here:

just started the update routine of the wwe rom from the wiki (ART_HTCWWE_11140501_024990_WWE_Test_R ) and yes, it starts up properly and kicks me out just because my battery power is below 50% !!!

Austria is without WLAN/Wi-Fi... even thought the shop and the hotline told me it had WLAN- the day after i signed a new contract an got my MDA Compact III another Guy from the hotline comfirmed: no WLAN :mad: :mad:
Files on the CD are named HERO, so i suppose it's a light version of the ARTEMIS... hopefully WLAN is deactivatet via Software... i would bother doing Hardwaremods with a brand new MDA :mad:

OK, what I've got so far... Some parts are still missing though...
First of all... Yes, the ARTE110 is capable wo WiFi because T-Mobile just removes some registry keys at startup and woops, wifi is gone. It is now for sure that the RemoveWifi.proxml gets parsed everytime then WM starts. The file is not deleteable but writeable so you should comment all tags (not the start end ending tag) out and this danger is abandonned. You can also turn each nocharacterisctic-tag to characterisctic (the no indicates the removal of the given key. the others create or in that case overwrite keys and values). I admit, I didn't try commenting the entries, but in my opinion there is a good chance that it works.
Good, so the big problem is still that it minimally got parsed one time (first startup of you mda) so the registry keys are already gone. We have to recreate all the entries. (You will need PHM Registry Editor (http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/RegEdit/))
create the keys:
HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN
HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN\Linkage
HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN1
HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN1\Params
Those are important for Driver assignment and so on.
Now some Values must be set to the keys.
Create the String Values in HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN:
"DisplayName="SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter"
"Group"=NDIS"

Good, we have successfully created a Network interface with the tnetwln.dll driver. But that's by far not enough.
Get to HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCCP . Increase the DWORD-Data in TotalApplets by one. Now create a new key "Applet$number$" where $number$ is by one higher than the highest already available number. In my case it was Applet10. Now, add the following String Values to this key:

Create the Key HKLM\ControlPanel\Wireless LAN and the value (DWORD):

If you open up your settings screen you see 3 sliders the left one is Group 0 with the personal stuff. Group 1 (in the middle) is the slider for the for system settings. and Group 2 is the connectivity slider. Now it should be clear why we want to add the Wireless LAN thing to group 2 ;)
OK, lets do some magic to the comm manager...
HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\CommManager is the point of interest. There is a Value called "SupportedFunctions" set with a DWORD entry. The number in this value must be increased by 1 to make CommManager able to handle 1 more applet. You see some keys in CommManager which are just numbers. Those are, numeric sorted, the applet setters for CommManager so that it knows which applets should be loaded at start. We already increased the maximum number of handled applets by 1. Now create a new Applet-Entry. Create a new key, for example, 6 (must be by 1 higher than the highest already available key)
You now have HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\CommManager\6 and need to set a String-Value:
"Default"="Wlan"
This enables the next applet with the Wlan-Module.
Status
So, the CommManager would be able to handle wifi correctly. In Network Interfaces, there is our newly created Integrated Wireless LAN Adapter added. RemoveWifi.proxml is now harmless. We added Wireless Lan to the Connection-Slider of the Settings-Program. Biggest problem... the wireless tools that handle wireless settings are not available on my system. I took those from a prophet (here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=26933&d=1142589665)) but they don't run. Plus, I'm sure I missed some things in the registry. PLUS, I don't really know atm how the driver-hardware assignment exactly works on Win... How should WM5 know what a wifi-adapter is...

Ok thanx, with TC I can change the File but after Soft Reset I get a lot of System Messages "Error due changes in device settings" as SMS. They are old and I can get rid of them. They will be restored after each soft reset even if I switch back to the original RemoveWifi.provxml and "Removed Objects" folder cleared,.
Do anybody know how to specify parm/datatype for DWORD in the Provisioning file RemoveWifi.provxml ?

why are you all so sure that SW can do the trick? Maybee you can get back the WiFi Controls but what if there is simply no antenna wired to the wifi chipset within the OMAP as it is with Charmer?

This is definitely possible... But I don't like that thought... My thought is that they just simply deactivated wifi since they announced wifi but launched it without (for whatever reason). The arte110 from the netherlands supports wifi and as we all know there is a RemoveWifi and a RemoveGPS file. My RemoveGPS is nearly empty... But it would be easy for them to deactivate GPS (to sell it cheaper? maybe that was the reason for deactivating wifi. Or they did because they want to push gprs... who knows...). In fact it creates a softlink. In my opinion the arte110 from the netherlands also HAS those 2 files... but they are both empty or at least harmless. So that's why I think it's just a damn software thing. One of those arte110 from the netherlands would be very helpful (I mentioned that already 3 times now).

I don't really know what went wrong on your device. You might have done a syntax error to the RemoveWifi.provxml or something but if you copy back the original file, which you can't (because you can't delete the file so you can't overwrite it I think), it should work. You could copy the text in your backup and write it back. What did you exactly do?

I think it is the GSM/GPRS Service. If you have a look at the wirelessonoff.2bp it is the tray-symbol of the gsm-stuff...

WLANSettings.exe now launches without crashing! You have to rename the WLANSettings.exe.mui.0409 (from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=26933&d=1142589665)) to WLANSettings.exe.mui.$number$ where $number$ is the number you also have in the other mui-files on your system. Hmm, I dunno what still needs to be done. I dunno atm, why the dutch artemis also has the SAME RemoveWifi.provxml, but has the reg-keys that are needed for wifi. It has nothing to do with the registry imo. We also dunno WHEN the file actually gets parsed. Maybe it's a bootloader thing? Just something _before_ WM5 gets up at bootup? Ideas?

how about checking if somebody like for example vijay or so can help with changing the complete rom to one from the netherland guys. naturally we would need a means to dump their rom.
in addition: did you try to "change" the original extrom to the netherland extrom?

since this happened, my gdget starts up clean, displaying wlan in commanager and in connection. pitty though, cant start either of them. trying to import files from the netherland extrom it prevents copying "PP_System_Wifi" file.
unfortunately i cant copy files to microsd and from there to gadget yet as i dont have my sdcard yet.

p.s.:
installing the orig extrom cabs by hand the entries are gone!

dont know maybe i am stupid and blind. I just got the UK version of the MDA compact 3 and it doesnt have:
WIFI - as we already know
MSN - removed from the windows derectory all together (no trace of pmsn.exe anywhere)
MiniSD card - this is just unaceptable. why the hell to have gps on board and not have where to install the nav soft?
has anyone else have the same?

This is extract from TI about their OMAP850 chip.
You can see Wi-Fi is not integrated, but can be interfaced with additional circuits. It very well maybe that chip responsible for WLAN is not in place. I don't see particular reason for this.

Which Version of the Artemis do you referr to? The Artemis or Hero? I haven't found an answer to the question whether T-Mobile orders different devices for example the Netherlands and Germany, because T-Mobile Artemis in Netherlands do have WiFi, whereas in Germany its disabled. I hope your post does not put an end to the WiFi issue because the gadget is missing the proper Hardware :(

i dont quite believe it to be the end of the german discussion.
i messed up my extrom and my gadget now restarts purely wm5. after the startup preceeding a hard reset, the commanager displays a wlan option, as well as the connection settings displaying wlan options. both can be started, but do not lead to anything. once i softreset the gadget, those entries are gone. this to me raises hopes on the wifi being disabled by some or the other "something" integrated in the tmobile wm5 -rom.
now, should we at some stage be able to flash a forign rom ( like the netherland) by bypassing the CID lock which momentarrily seems to be the reason for this to malfunction, than i have my hopes up high on us proving it to either have or not to have wlan!

I am going to unlock a MDA Compact III German T-Mobile hopefully this weekend (if it gets delivered) via IMEI-check... It says there that also CID is removed. Can that be of any help regarding a possible free unlocker, like the one Pof created for the Vario II? Let me know if i can be of any help

Hi, just wonder if your friend can truly understand the difference between actual hardware being removed and program hack to remove the functionality of wi-fi?
Since you say he works for HTC UK, there is a great chance he is not an engeneer, and if he had got an answer "removed" from someone inside HTC, there is a chance that he could misinterpreted it as "hardware removed" and answer your question positively.
P.S. Or maybe you work for T-mobile and don't want us to uncover wi-fi? :-)

yes, once cid etc. is removed via imei-check.co.uk i downloaded the wwe-rom from the wiki and reflashed my german rom to the english rom.

simply start the normal update routine( ppc activesync) .-- alternatively you can look for the files in the temp folder, copy them to another directory and start setup from there, but first way works no probs.

This is of no use to those outside the UK, I know, but the O2 version of an Artemis (called Orbit - http://www.my-xda.com/looksXdaOrbit.html) HAS wi fi enabled (according to the website)
So I guess I'll be off to O2 next month with my PAC as the wifi is a big advantage for me.

htc 1.12 gives me "wrong model id"-- even though i am cid unlocked!!!

I find it very unlikely that T-Mobile UK and T-Mobile Germany as the biggest markets decide to order the HTC Hermes / aka MDAc 3 WITHOUT a physical WLANchip - and T-Mobile Dutch takes some quantities of a WLANenabled MDAc 3.
This makes no business sense.
Why would the dutch market justify the sale of a "fully enabled" MDAc3 ??
Somehow, all this is very strange.
Is there no SW program that can read out the WLAN chip signature from a dutch MDA, maybe then we can compare ?
Is there anyone on this forum with a Dutch MDAc3 ??

I've used the imeicheck unlocker on my UK MDA Compact III and I still can't flash the HTC Roms. Invalid device error is given.
I tried to look at the CID lock level with mtty.exe but got an invalid command error.
It seems to me that the unlock allows us to flash any rom from the same device but not different devices.
I believe the currently known device ID's are:
HTC = arte100
T-Mobile = arte110
O2 = arte200
Has anyone been able to flash a rom designed for a different type "brand" of Artemis?

It sounds like you try to flash HTC Artemis firmware on a HTC Hero or vice versa.
The HTC Artemis has different chipset inside (it has additional WiFi chipset) than the HTC Hero. (In case you just try to enable WiFi on a Hero... the WiFi chipset is missing, no firmware/software can replace a missing chipset + antenna)!
>From outside both devices look same but inside they have different hardware.
Flashing a ROM from another device most likely will cause serious damage to it.

up to now only T-Mobile sells the HTC Hero (the version without WiFi).
Nevertheless you have the following options:
- flash any HTC Hero version you like (T-Mob-UK-English, T-Mob-GER-German, T-Mob...)
- to skip installing the "nice" T-Mobile branding immediately skip the installation of Extended ROM (a message comes up: "Please wait, device will configure in 3 seconds") after hard reset by sticking in "Reset".
We opened HERO device and it is missing the WiFi chipset. So we gave up to try to flash HTC Artemis ROM since there is no real reason to risk a device.

Well I would say that this is false advertising as the web page clearly states that any ROM will be flashable onto any of the devices listed (HTC Artemis, Compact 3, XDA Orbit, etc.)

Are you sure you succeeded with this? Imeicheck support constantly claim this not be possible as the machines have superCID preventing this: if still performed, gadget garbage! How did you manage to install htc rom? I always get "wrong model ID", even though I am CID unlocked!

CID is used to lock the device to a specific vendor firmware.
When phone is CID locked and you try to flash the firmware from a different vendor the flash software will return the error: INVALID VENDOR ID .
If you make it SUPERCID , the the phone it will accept ANY compatible firmwares .
Even if you patch the flasher to send the firmware to the phone, the phone itself will check against the CID data and if is lock and CID not matching it will refuse the flashing.
Device ID.
The flasher check to see if the phone is compatible with the firmware is trying to flash to.
For example if you try to flash HTC Universal with HTC Hermes firmware.
The flasher in this case will return error: "wrong model ID"
IF you patch the flasher, the phone it will NOT complain about the firmware and it will flash it, but is NOT guaranteed that the phone it will work with that firmware.
So your phones are SUPERCID now.
To check this, run MTTY and type:
set 32 0
IF the phone answer at the end with
"Level=0xFF" means CID locked
IF the phone answer with
"Level=0" then is supercid

- ipl and spl are newer than original. ipl 1.13.0001 vs. ipl 1.12.0001, spl 1.13.0000 vs. 1.12.0000
- ugly skin for dialer in T-Mobile inspires fear. How was it possible to include such terrible dialer with such nicely looking phone? But this is corrected easy with replacement of skin for dialpad. Could be found on xda-developers or _ttp://zombienexus.net/portal/GH_ShowArticle.asp?HID=18&CATID=1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9|10
- x-button software in T-Mobile ROM, which wasn't in original Russian ROM. Very convenient to close applications and unload them from memory, without going to Memory-Running Programs.
- of course all additional software from original ext rom was gone, but don't think missing something. Did not manage yet to unlock ext rom "safely".
- ext roms are different of course, because they customize for each country or operator or seller.
It is a long discussion about wlan. Confirm that wlan is operational with this T-Mobile (UK) shipped ROM.
Could you tell me please, those who have a trouble with wlan. Do you have WLAN option in Comm Manager. Can you enable it? Please reflect your version of ROM and device.

Mine is cid unlocked, takes hero rom, but not htc rom! So, pls. share how you succeeded!

Forgive me if this post is not in the right place, but since the UK version of the Mda Compact III does not have WiFi, is it worth it getting a contract with unlimited internet?
To make it easy to understand, what speed would I get (?mbps)?
I'd go for the O2 version, but I'm seriously considering T-mobile for the "unlimited internet", but will it be too slow on GPRS?

2.I'm playing with my MDA Compact III to check is it possible to enable wi-fi in it
3.I've add some registry entries sended by rjs_artemis
4.Now I've got SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter at Settings\Connections\Network Cards
5.I've also had wireless indicator on the title bar but it's gone
6.When I'm opening wlansettings.exe from windows directory I'm getting information that Wifi is off. When I'm trying to turn it on - nothing happened.
7.I've check rjs_artemis registry entries and I've found some files missing in My system:

Don't waste your time, the WiFi hardware is not fitted to your T-Mobile device, they removed the kit prior to releasing them - shame but with the Web-n-Walk bolt on I don't miss the WiFi on my C-III (Then again I could allways use my HTC Artemis that does have WiFi) - Mike

oo interesting! i have a T-Mobile MDA CIII, which doesnt have WiFi, but if i got to Device Information, it does have the OMAP850... so does that mean it has the WiFi bit? or has the chip been modified to remove the WiFi part?

The Omap850 is the processor and its architecture supports WiFi, but just like in a Centrino Notebook (Which come along with WiFi) you can take out WiFi Hardware. So it was done on the T-Mobile MDA Compact III. At first everyone thought it would be Software disabled, then that the Antenna was missing, but after that people found out the proper Chip was simply not there... WLAN on (german) MDA-C III - never gonna happen ;) (And yep, i know, that the Dutch Version has it)

hy guys.... i had the same problem. i had a MDA compact III - no WiFi . I traded it for a P3300 (but bad case - lots of scratches and two cracks on the bottom).. . Now i'm gonna replace my case (hopefully i'll get it in 3-4 days). I'll make photos of the mainboard when i take it apart. i suggest that owners of MDA's do the same and compare the mainboards. what i can tell you for sure is that MDA doesn't have antenna. but if the chip really misses... i don't know. so let's find out :cool:
