Hi,

I'm brand new to pda phones, so plenty of 'stupid' questions will no doubt follow...

Got my new MDA Compact III on UK T-mobile Flext 35 with web n walk pro (or is it plus? the £12.50 a month version). Things are OK, but the net connection speed is pretty poor...

Been reading around this board and saw that on other phones it is possible to ask T-mobile to switch on hsdpa to get 'broadband' ish internet speeds...so I phoned T-mobile, who said they could not do that on this phone as it is not a 3G phone. Is this true, as I was told this was a 3G phone by my local T-mob store.

More importantly, does this mean I have to put up with dial up type connection speeds?

Cheers

Matt

Unfortunately the Artemis is not 3G capable, however it does have edge.

Does this mean I should be able to access HSCSD on T-mobile UK?

What should I be asking the T-mobile people for?

:-)

Thanks

Matt

Sorry I'm not quite up to speed on the different connection types and names, maybe someone else can help clarify what each is. Or you could try another device forum, maybe the Tytn. There may be some more info on the different connections.

Best of luck,

BPP

The speeds are as follows

CSD - old style dial-up connection - 9600 bps, way too slow for nowadays
HSCSD - 'High Speed' Dial-up - up to 43.2 kbps, but only orange offer this in the uk, at up to 28800 bps.
GPRS - Standard data service - up to around 43.2kbps - fairly normal on most phones around at the moment
EDGE - 'High Speed' GPRS - up to around 100kbps - don't know if T-mobile offer this in the UK, but orange certainly do.

UMTS/3G - Next generation data services. Still not the standard yet but not far from it - up to 384 kbps - all networks offer it but not all phones. The Artemis is not 3G

HSDPA - High Speed Downlink Packet Access. So called 'Super' 3G - up to around 1.8 Mbps - Available on T-Mobile, but only on certain handsets, like the Hermes and Trinity

The Artemis that you have will give you similar speeds to most Nokia and Ericsson Phones.

First thing I would do is to search these here forums for info on specifying open DNS servers, which will help with opening pages faster on t-mobile.
