Unlocking the Extended ROM is now possible again on new HTC Hermes ROMs :)
Download:
Hermes Extended ROM Unlocker & Unhider v3
Works in ALL ROM versions, but you need to CID Unlock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282073) your Hermes first if you want to UNLOCK the Extended ROM (you don't need to CID Unlock if you just want to unhide the ExtROM):
HERMES_MountALLExtROM.cab (ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Tools_and_Programs/HERMES_MountALLExtROM.cab)
Instructions:
CID-Unlock your Hermes (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282073) (NOTE: This step is only needed if you are using a NEW rom and want to UNLOCK the Extended ROM)
Install cab file on your device
Power off the device for 10 seconds
soft reset with stylus
Before asking questions:
Read the wiki:
How to Unlock and Unhide Extended ROM (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Unhide_Extrom)
Available Extended ROM Versions (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtendedRoms) (please post yours if it's not already there!)
Upgrading FAQs (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeFAQ) (see #11 to #14)
Notes:
All cab files you put on the ExtROM need to be signed with a valid certificate to install after a hard reset (there's no known way to circunvent that yet).
You can use the ExtROM folder as extra storage space (~10Mb).
Enjoy! ;)

Those having problems unlocking ExtROM on newer roms, please try this cab file:
HERMES_MountExtROM_v2.cab (ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Tools_and_Programs/HERMES_MountExtROM_v2.cab)
Remember you have to power off the device for 10 seconds after installing the cab, then soft reset.
First person trying please post a comment and report if it works :)
Ow my golly Pof!!! You are a true GENIUS!!! Thank you very very very much!!! It works flawlessly with the Cingular AKU2.6 Rom!!! Another 9.5MB saved!!! Very grateful!
PERFECTION!!! Now I dont need to go back to the shipped TyTn Rom for the saved Ext_Rom space!!!

Is this unlocker easily reversible (translation: how does one lock again)?

Thanks guys for your comments and beta-testing :D
As you may have seen I splited the old sticky thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=273662) about ExtROM unlocking and made this new one, to avoid confussion on new people.
Now to your questions:
Is this unlocker easily reversible (translation: how does one lock again)?
It's just a registry hack (see the cab file is just 4kb), very easy to hide/lock again. I will post instructions on the wiki later, so it can be integrated on the next version of fit4cat hermes tweaker too :)
pof let me get this right, it is now possible to unlock the extended rom with bootloader 1.06 like the RUU_HER_Cingular_1.34.502.1_1.16.00.00_wwe_cws_shi p.exe
Yes it is posible to unlock the ExtROM on this ROM too, bootloader has nothing to do here... (this is an ExtROM unlocker, not a CID / SIM unlocker (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282073)).

I ran the v2 unlocker on my 8525 and can see the Extended ROM, but whenever I try to install programs to Extended ROM I get an error that they could not be installed.
Am I doing something wrong? I've done this a bunch on my Apache without any issues.

URPREY: I installed some programs on mine and it's working fine, i'm running cingular's 1.31 rom now, haven't tried with 1.34.
Try running the v2 CAB file again, make sure you power off the device for a while for the registry settings to keep, and then soft reset it, see if it works this time.

I did do that pof :)
I doublechecked the registry keys, and they correspond to the LOCKED description in the wiki:
LOCKED:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Drivers\MSYSEXT
"Background"=0x0 (0)
"Foreground"=0x0 (0)
When I looked at setup.xml in the cab file, it appears that those are the values specified? Is that the correct value or should they be changed to something different to unlock?

Yes, this is how it should be... the registry keys on the wiki are still not updated, the info there is from the old cab. Can you try to install the old cab first, and then the new one?  tell me if it works this way :)

Hi pof,
I had used this on RUU_HER_ChungHwa_1.25.751.4_1.07.03.10_CHT_SHIP, but it seems doesn't work, it can unhidden the Extended ROM, but can't unlock.

newbie question: what benefits are there to unlocking the extrom?
pof
21st November 2006, 12:20 PM
As URPREY and shaliuxin reported that the new CAB was not working for them I flashed the cingular 1.34 ROM on my Hermes to see if it was any difference.
Without using the CAB, just installed a registry editor and added / modified the following registry keys / values:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ EXT_FLASHDRV]
"MountHidden"=dword:00000000
"Bootphase"=dword:00000002
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\ EXT_FLASHDRV]
"MountHidden"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash]
"MountHidden"=dword:00000000
My ExtROM is unlocked and visible in File explorer. I have installed 3 cabs and can run programs from ExtROM without problems. So if the CAB doesn't work for you, you may try setting the registry keys manually and see if you get better results...
I tested this with Cingular 1.31 and Cingular 1.34 ROMs and worked fine for me.

AT POF...so you just copy the cabs then run them from the extended ROM? This will work? I know in the wizard you had to pack it up and do all those fun little step then hard reset your device and have it install automatically. Is this the case. or am I just confused?

It simply allows you to choose Extended_ROM as an installation directory when installing programs - effectively giving you 8MB more storage. You can run the cabs from anywhere and just choose to install them to extROM...

The attached file contains all keys and values under HKLM\System\StorageManager, it has been exported from a Cingular 1.34 ROM after a hard reset and without letting Cingular customizations install. After this I have my ExtROM unlocked, and this is how my registry is.

@neomanxda: make sure your internet settings are ok, you won't fix this by upgrading the rom. Anyway, it is possible to upgrade from SD card, read here:

Is it possible that the Cingular customizations replaces a dll file which prevents write access to extROM?No I don't think so! I also upgraded my TyTn to Cingular 1.34 without the Cingular customizations from Ext_ROM, I installed the files from the original TyTn's ext_ROM instead. And I can't modify the Ext_ROM either.

Unfortunately, signcode also requires the installing of a root cert to work. This cert isn't available during extrom customization so signcode signed cabs will fail then.
To fix this, somebody needs to pony the $400 for a true signing cert from a recognized CA such as Verisign. Then, they could produce a install cab that installs the signcode root cert. With that done, everybody could use signcode to sign their custom installation cabs at extrom customization.

With the original Dopod ROM (Bootloader v1.0.4), the registry hacks & unlock ExtROM code work flawlessly.
Then I went on to SuperCID my Dopod and upgraded it to the newest Australian Dopod ROM today. The Bootloader is upgraded to v1.0.6 automatically.

I couldn't write to my extROM prior to unlock/SuperCID. After unlock/SuperCID I was able to install programs to my extROM. The following morning I lost all write access to my extROM again. No idea what happened - I didn't change anything. Successive attempts to unlock extROM didn't work, so I have a mostly full extROM that I can't delete anything from (I even tried a hard reset but that didn't work either).
I'm sure a solution will be along at some point.

Did you use unlocker v2a?
Yes, I used the latest v2a to superCID my device.
However, my device is already SIM unlocked. I follow the unlocking procedure just to get the SuperCID.

Thanks for pointing it out. No offense, I've read the WiKi.
Cool! So many don't....
Both the old & new CABs didn't work on the newest Dopod Australian ROM :(
Unhide but still locked. I believe a lot of people are having the same problems.
Intellectually I appreciate people providing CABs for reg hacks, but I prefer to do them manually myself. I did exactly what pof referenced in post #13 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1058236&postcount=13) and mine has (so far) been working. I tend to wonder if there aren't some interactions between the reg hacks that are causing folks problems... Can you try doing JUST those changes?

Nope, didn't work.
Anyway, I gave up and downgraded my device to the original ROM with 1.04 Bootloader. And the ExtROM unlocking works just fine.
Must be the new Bootloader/CID that is causing the problem.

After unlocking/SuperCID my extROM was unlocked and writeable but the next day I lost all write access. I have tried a hard reset and doing the reg hacks you referenced, but it still doesn't fix anything :(

I upgraded my device again to the South African ROM. Bootloader is upgraded to 1.09. SuperCID stays and ExtendedROM is also unlocked with no problem whatsoever.
So the SuperCID must be the key. Somehow, the SuperCID was lost when upgrading to the latest Australian ROM (thus unable to unlock the ExtendedROM).

Yes, just re-upgrade to the Australian ROM again from the South Africa one. The SuperCID stays. Now unlocking of ExtendedROM is no problem.
So, this confirms that you need SuperCID to get the ExtendedROM unlocked for the newer ROM.

I unlocked the extended rom, saw it, put files in it, then I tried to install iGuidance onto the extended rom and my 8525 crashed. After a soft reset, the extended rom is nowhere to be found. I tried to install v3 of the cab so many times & manually check the registry, still can't get it back. It's gone for good, I guess. I really dont want to do a hard reset since it would take too much time to configure all my stuffs & hacks I have on the phone.

I don't know what happend, but after I try to unlock and mount ext. rom, my device, keeps in the Orange startup screen for a while.
After that I must to do a hard reset, after the Install of programs (I supose from ext. rom) an error appears, saying The file: \extended_rom\autorun.exe does not exist. After that I need to do a soft reset to use my device. All seem to be ok, except some things about orange (I'm using it for voda, so dont care)
If I try to mount & unlock the extended rom after the hard reset My screen goes to the orange startup screen and hang it there...
I don't know what I must do know to try to access to the extended rom.
Even If I tray to restore a backup, my device hangs in the same point.
Please help me, If you can.
My device is an SPV M3100 (unlocked with pof method since 15 days).
I have the contents of the extended rom, of a previous day that I do a backup:
AutoRun.exe
AutoRun.exe.0C0A.mui
Config.txt
HERMES_SP_28_08_2006.CAB
MT_PC_Hermes_OrangeRO_REG_060612.CAB
MT_Shortcut-MMS-Hermes.CAB
T_mm1lib_DLL.CAB
But I can't put this files, because when I try to unlock the ext rom my SPV hangs, and I need to hard reset it
Each time that I try to unlock the ext rom my device needs to be hard reset.
I have a friend with another device like this.
can I extract the rom from this device and upload to my device?
Thank you in advance

try to rename or delete \windows\preautorun* and see if it fixes your problem. If not, I remember there was some tool to format the extrom... but can't seem to find it now, try doing a search yourself and probably find something.

I investigate more in my issue.
After hard reset, preautorun.exe is executed, this seem to execute some cab files , that are in the rom. After succesfull install of this cab files, the preautorun try to execute \extended_rom\autorun.exe But in my SPV the extended rom is not mounted by the system automatically and this show the error that autorun.exe is not found.
Well, I create a normal folder in \ with extended_rom name and I put there the contents that I have of a previous backup of the extrom. Then execute from windows folder preautorun.exe and now after the "rom" programs are executed, the fake extended_rom cabs called by autorun.exe are installed correctly.
I don't understand how after a hardreset my SPV isn't able to unlock an mount the extrom to execute the cabs inside it.
How can I investigate more? I need some clues to try to mount & unlock the extrom or try to investigate, why the system can't do this after a hard reset
Thank you in advance...

1) Downgraded to version RUU_HER_Cingular_1.30.502.1_1.11.00.00_wwe_cws_shi p.exe ( version 1.04) of the boot loader. ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Shipped_Complete_Updates/RUU_HER_Cingular_1.30.502.1_1.11.00.00_wwe_cws_shi p.exe
2) Applied the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe
3) Copied HERMES_MountALLExtROM.cab to the Phone \
4) Ran the update, selected YES for the option and it installed successfully.
5) Turned off using power waited 15 seconds and reset the phone.
6) Turned off the phone and inserted a TMOBILE SIM (old Blackberry phone) (had to put the unlock code 22051978 in)

You didn't mention running HERM_Unlock_v2a.exe which is the part that actually sim-unlocks your phone. Since your phone works with the TMobile sim I think you actually did do this. You should check using mtty to ensure that your phone is SuperCID before you upgrade the rom just to save you headaches in the future.
Just to make sure you're clear - the extROM unlock is different than the SIM unlock.

Hermes Extended ROM Unlocker & Unhider v3
Works in ALL ROM versions, but you need to CID Unlock your Hermes first if you want to UNLOCK the Extended ROM (you don't need to CID Unlock if you just want to unhide the ExtROM):
HERMES_MountALLExtROM.cab
Also if I put a SIM from another phone do I always have to enter the 22xxxx unlock code or that one time I did for my Tmobile is good enough? I was able to make a call and my sim did work from Tmobile.

Nevermind I ran the HERM_Unlock_v2a.exe and it unlocked successfully. Just to confirm I tried the Tmobile sim again and it worked fine. Not sure why it worked before I know I never ran the executable. Also the V2A.exe worked on my v1.06 firmware.
Thanks again you guys rock.
Do you think if I clear the phone (hard reset, erase all installed software) it will lock it again? Anything I need to be aware of that won't work with the unlocked sim?

@PostDeals: plain and simple, you will need to unlock the extended rom everytime you hard reset or install a new rom, just by running the cab file.
The steps to CID unlock, are only needed to run once. Check your CID from mtty to be sure you did right, if you're not SuperCID complete the steps again.

Is it possible to add some .cab files in the extend ROM to make TV aund visio works ?

Si oui, quelqu'un a-t-il une copie de l'extended ROM SFR ?

I understand that we can not add our own CAB to the ExtROM due to the signing problem but it is possible unlock the ExtROM then edit the "Config.txt" and delete a CAB (like the Cingular TelNav and GetGood and ExpressMail).
I want to be able to do a Hard Reset without having to do the quick soft reset to bypass all the crap Cingular forces. This will allow me to still get the Wifi/MMS/keyboard etc... CAB to install still automatically.
Found my own answer in a sticky, suprised no one flamed me.

thank you very much for the link, while your available I just wanted to breifly know...regarding the the Super CID unlock....once I downgrade to bootloader 1.04 and after I perform the CID unlock,
1) will I be able to update the Radio only to 1.20 or 1.21 and then update the ROM to the most recent Cingular (1.34) w/o affecting the radio?
It would also be great if you could provide your recommendation as to which Radio 1.20 or 1.21 is better in your opinion. Look forward to your thoughts, appreciate the time, thanks....

P.S. any recommendations as to the best/stable/fastest ROM and Radio combination there is to use in the U.S.A. (extended ROM will modifying it), thanks again.

Ok I have been playing and took out some crao from the Ext Rom successfully. I also found that MS .Net CF 2.0 and Opera Mobile are signed so I could put those in the Ext Rom okay.
My question that I can not figure out and may not be possible is after I run the disable security hack that I found to allow unsigned software without error messages , then can I make a folder on my SD Storage Card with some sort of autorun and config file with all my unsigned cabs and run it al at once that way instead of installing ALOT of separate cabs. I tried and just making a new config but the autorun file still points to the real Ext Rom and not my storage card folder.

Hermes Extended ROM Unlocker & Unhider v3
Works in ALL ROM versions, but you need to CID Unlock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282073) your Hermes first if you want to UNLOCK the Extended ROM (you don't need to CID Unlock if you just want to unhide the ExtROM):
HERMES_MountALLExtROM.cab (ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Tools_and_Programs/HERMES_MountALLExtROM.cab)
Reviving this thread in hopes that someone can put "works in ALL ROM versions" in current terms. Seems that perhaps this may be true for pre-AKU 3.3 ROMs, only?
v3 is able to unhide, but not unlock the Extended ROM in 2.06.502.3.
