I found this setting in the registry to show the UMTS band, it will also let you switch between UMTS and Edge.. now i have fully tested this yet since i live in a edge area and work in a umts area.. havent been to work yet today, but i made a cab for it, after installing this cab the menu is listed in settings/phone/ band tab

Ok so i link my pc and the 8525 via usb or bluetooth. Load the file on the 8525 and run it? Is it able to run this and install without unlocking it? Im just trying to gather all the info i can before doing anything to it. I plan on unlocking it but still have a lot more reading to do. :D

Will this edit allow me to manually go back and forth between Edge and UMTS?

Can you tell me the location of the key you edited?

Awesome. Thanks very much for your reply.

I now have 2 drop down menus in the band tab under settings.

Select your network type with 3 choices:
1) Auto
2) GSM
3) WCDMA (Does WCDMA=UMTS, or 3G?)

Select your GSM/UMTS band:
1) Auto
2) GSM (900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
3) GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
4) UMTS(2100+800)

I'm on Cingular so I'd like to know which GSM band to use when I want to specify for my phone to only use GSM.

This could potentially save a large amount of battery resources for me and others that don't need 3G unless we really need the blazing speed...

Also, do you have to soft reset for the settings to take effect?

Awesome. Thanks very much for your reply. Forgive the noob question, but will I have to go into the registry to change back and forth, or will I be able to toggle UMTS/Edge from the today screen or a simple setting on the phone?

that reg hack will give you the Band option in the phone settings, in there you can toggle back and forth

Band setting that worked for me on Cingular is:
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)

I needed to stop all 'data calls' before it will allow the change so I went into memory under settings and stopped all programs that are data - for me it was Goodlink (called 'email' under the running programs). Then I put it into flight mode by clicking on the signal bar icon, waited a few seconds, and then turned flight mode off. That seemed to clear the data call. After turning off flight mode and waiting the 15 seconds before it will allow me to click on 'settings' in that dialog box, I made the switch to GSM.

To switch back to UMTS, I just repeated the steps.

This is a useful hack. Now I can test whether the poor battery life issue is Goodlink, or UMTS.

Thanks Shogun

Ok one more newb question! I unzipped it and it has two files. 0001 file and an html file. Do i load one of these and run it or do i load the hole zip file on to the 8525 and click it? Dont laugh its the first time i will load something on it. Thanks!

there should only be 1 file in that zip, should only be a cab file... if there are more then disregard the others and only load the cab file...

He did the same thing I did. When you unzip it, it says .cab file but winzip still shows the winzip icon on it and he unzipped it again. Just drag/copy the .cab file over only unzipping it one time!

Well, as I said, I am new - I ha rea through the last two pages of threads and unzipped the file many times but still got the same result before I asked.

Doesn't matter how many times I unzipped it, it still gives me the same unknown file of 000 file type. I don't get a .cab file like I would ormally get from other downloads.

Feel kind of helpless.

Thanks for your prompt response anyway and thank you for your time.

you only need to unzip the downloaded file once, there is one file in there, even though its pulling a zip or rar icon, it does not need to be unzipped again, its a .cab file.. you drop the .cab file on your phone and tick it to install it...

I would like to do exactly the same thing as you (stay on 3g all the time for streaming.)
Is anyone able to force 3g in this board that is on UK T-Mobile with an MDA Vario II?

My options in Settings/Phone/Band are -

Network Type-
Auto
GSM

GSM/UMTS Band-
Auto
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)

Unless I'm missing something there doesn't appear to be any option to force 3g. I'm thinking maybe adding a registry key to include a 3g option would do the trick.

I'm guessing you need a special 3G SIM or 3G provisioning on your account to make it work then - have you ever see the "U" symbol instead of the "G" symbol? Even on the brain-dead Cingular network selection, this enables Auto/GSM/WCDMA so I wonder if you have a SIM/account issue not a phone issue?

If there was a dotted line between the UMTS and GSM coverage I think it would go right over my desk at work. Needless to say, I am very thankful to come across this fix.

It makes switching very easy, no need to go through the registry or phone settings. You can set timed profiles as well and the developer is very responsive to requests and bug repair.

Hard Reset absolutely DOES undo registry changes - it'll basically reformat your phone. I suspect you mean a simple soft reset via the button?

Search for PHM regedit or any other of the wiki-recommended registry editors and install that. FWIW, I manually made the change on my 8525 and it works. I didn't use the .cab.

Shogun (I'm with Cingular too btw)...

I was having the dropped call problem when the phone switched back and forth between the G and U. About 75% of all my calls, ingoing and outgoing, this would happen too. I live in Los Angeles, so I figured the competing towers were wreaking havoc.

Quick question... I've selected WCDMA as a network because I get full bars all over the place, I guess I'm just confused when then selecting the GSM/UMTS band, which selection to use: Auto, GSM900/UMTS, GSM1900/UMTS, or UMTS. If I'm selecting only the 3g network to use, wouldn't I only select then the UMTS band? Are there benefits to selecting one of the other?

Thanks in advance... You've saved my relationship with my new gf, she kept thinking I was hanging up on her and/or being shady. Not to mention how frustrating it is to drop calls left and right.

I was going into the Cingular store to return this 8525 but after spending much time on this site I managed to find enough info to hack/upgrade untill I have a pretty nice functioning device.
My biggest problem was that it would set in 3G and never change, no call, no text nothing. (FYI: I have the same firmware specs as wpbear thanks to all the upgrades) The last thing I did was to apply the reg hack at the beginning of this post and was able to lock into edge and now it works beautifully!

So, I am not going to return it as it is my belief that in time Cingular's high speed coverage will get increasingly better and I will be able to put the handset back to auto.

I am a computer engineer/programmer and I love what I do but I have to say that the last 2 days have not been fun, however without the outstanding help and assistance of the members I could not have accomplished this. :D

I must admit this is by far the best tech site it has been my pleasure to be associated with and certainly deserves my donation. I hope others donate as well so this site continues to operate.

Thanks again for all the help and information!!!

I edited the registry to change showUMTSbandpage to 1. Whenever I went to Settings > Phone, the phone hangs.

Hang problem is still there every time I try to access Settings > Phone.

Are you running PTTfix? If so make sure you're running the latest - this hang was reported with earlier PTTfix versions on the 2.15 AT&T ROM - completely independent of the UMTS setting.

Are you running PTTfix? If so make sure you're running the latest - this hang was reported with earlier PTTfix versions on the 2.15 AT&T ROM - completely independent of the UMTS setting.

THANK YOU. I missed this little tidbit, and just thought I had mucked things up with my registry edit. The new PTTFix makes the world right again. :-)

WOW I cant begin to thank you enogh I have been using my 8525 for over a month all was great till they installed a 3g tower in the neighboring town so I was picking up 1 bar of 3g before full edge which in turn was dropping calls and everything i was also hearing screaching sounds when the phone tried changing over to edge I was in contact with the higer ups at ATT but to no avail they said it was my phone got it replaced and had same issues! Before this all happened i recomended it to a freind of mine and he was happy till this started happing but now i can just stay on edge!!! just to note 3g was working fine in other eareas of the country i traveled from lakeood nj to toronto canada without a problem so its not my phone!!!
Please if anyone has had similar problems please pm me so i can have att contact you to try and get to the bottem of this so i can use 3g again! or ill just wait for the new HPs they look good!

I have a question. I know that when we switch bands, we get G for GPRS and 3G for UTDMA. When it is set to auto, if there is an area where there is no 3G, I get E that is faster then G. Can we have the ability to change the bands so I not just get the lower conection of G but get E? Thanks.

I have the 8525 and the dropped calls are driving me insane. It took me 15 tries to get through to a friend this afternoon!

I really want to download this hack... but it doesn't seem to want to let me. Says that I might not have permission? What does that mean and how do I fix it!?!?

THANKS!

Nevermind! Solved the issue on my own... I'm not really sure why it works now, but it works! So, thanks anyway! I'm am so excited about this fix, I can't wait to try it out tomorrow... I'd call some one to test it, but its 1 in the morning and they'd probably kill me...

I found this site by accident but this "show UMTS band" hack has saved my sanity. After upgrading to WM6 on my HTC 8525, my signal strength seems to be lower than before and I seem to be dropping more calls. Now I understand. With the "band" option on my phone settings I just set it to GSM and get great performance since I don't always use the 3G speed. I don't have 10 euros and was going to donate 5 but as soon as I have some to spare I will definitely be back. Thanks for sharing your great ideas, intelligence and solutions with the rest of us!!! You guys are just plain GREAT! :)
