READ BEFORE POSTING: How to tell if you have a G4 or G3 device & how to CID-unlock it

The only visible difference between a G3 and a G4 device is when you soft reset your device and looking at the IPL and SPL version numbers that occur during startup.

G3 DEVICE: IPL/SPL: 1.XX or 2.XX or 2.XX.00X (only two zeros)
G4 DEVICE: IPL/SPL: 2.XX.000X(three zeros)

Note, X is representing a number.

So, how do you go about to CID-unlock your device? First, do you really have to? Well, in one word YES!, in order to install most of the custom-made ROMs from this site you have to have a device that is CID-unlocked...

If you have a G3 device the solution is pretty straightforward. just look here... (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=263116)

If you have a G4 device you have to go to imei-check.co.uk and pay £20 in order to get it unlocked. But you can help develop a solution that doen't require you to pay for it. Have a look at this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284312) thread.

NOTE: There are several posts that mention this subject, some claim that using the imei-check.co.uk method will not CID-unlock your device but only unlock the SIM. THIS IS NOT CORRECT! Your G4 device will be unlocked after this procedure.

Finally, never, ever, flash your G4 device with a ROM that is intended for a G3 device, make sure that is either made for G4 or doesn't contain a bootloader. If you for some reason you do, you'll have damaged (bricked) your Wizard permanently...

As far as I know the brand of the chipset is the only thing that's different. It's also been speculated in that due to the newer bootloader present in the G4's they have updated security measures when upgrading...

i know i have a g4 . how do i get plugins to work must i unlock. all i want is to monitor my cpu, battery, memory and such not real get in to the registry in deep stuff.but i cant seem to get anything done. so if anyone has a good link for plugin for today screen to see battery, cpu usage, and memory. are just some great apps i could use please help

Ok, sue me if this has been asked before....I could not find it anywhere. On my Wizard the RED Vodafone splash screen covers the IPL/SPL versions on start-up. Anyway to find out in some other way whether it's a G3 or G4?

I tried to flash my Cingular 8125 with the latest ROM not realizing that I had a G4 device. Now all I see is the RBG screen and I don't know a way out.

I will appreciate any help to bring my 8125 back to normal.

Finally found the rom which can work with the G4 device. I think my phone is CID locked but still it worked. The ROM was 'Wizard love '.

It good to have my phone working now !

Is there, at all, *ANY*other way to get the IPL/SPL version numbers? As I have no eyesight, and as the software that actually lets me use any Windows Mobile device doesn't kick in until its entry is hit in the registry, splash screen isn't really an option.
Also, how is itpossible to determine if the ROM you're installing either contains a bootloader or is made for G4, should I be one of the "lucky" ones that has a G4 device?

If you can't be bothered to do that, and you don't already know the answer, you might not want to try anything as dangerous as flashing your toy. You could well be the next in a long line of posters asking "How do I get my brick to act like the phone it was?". I'm pretty certain that the experts on this site stopped throwing their arms up in despair after the first hundred or so of those posts.

If you're still determined to risk your XDA, and you can't be bothered looking, then start the XDA up in bootloader mode, and there it is - the IPL/SPL in white letters on an RGB "rainbow". However, I will not, and cannot, tell you how to get OUT OF boot loader mode afterwards, because I've never tried to get BACK from there, only FORWARDS, by installing a new ROM ... If you STILL want to risk it it's up to you... To enter boot loader mode, Hold "Camera" while short pressing the "reset" button

Since I came to this forum as a total noob, months ago, I've flashed a new ROM on my locked G4 device, upgraded my radio, overclocked it, and found out a whole pot full of nice things (see the sig). Being a noob - the first thing I did was to read everything on the forum, and in many cases cases re-read it until I fully understood it. I did all that BEFORE I attempted to do something as utterly foolish as to turn a perfectly good Wizard into an expensive, silver brick.

I've had my Wizard for nearly a week, and I haven't unlocked it because I am not yet absolutely certain of the steps AND the consequences. My quest to learn has been hampered by these folks who think they want to save a buck, but also think they should be handed a solution as if they were in line for ice cream in the fourth grade! :mad: There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there IS such a thing as a "spoiled and impatient" question! So, Spoiled and Impatient, get outta my way! You're extending the learning curve. :p

I'm surprised I haven't seen this talked about more in this thread. If I'm not mistaken, this is the alternative to paying to CID unlock G4 devices. Correct me if I'm wrong.

SIM unlock and CID unlock, 2 different things.. to unlock a G4 device as of now I beleive you have to pay for it through IMEI-check.com .. cost me about 38 bucks to do it.. but it saved me 100's by not bricking my device.. ;)

in the first one ipl the last digit is not zero so it should be g4 .but its only 2 number

I had to read it a second time to really understand, but, if there are no zeros (like mine, 2.26), then it's a G3, if there are zeros, you have to count them and that will tell you if it's a G3 or G4...

at least that's how I understood it...

The 4 zero's make it sound like a g4 but the first digit being a 1 doesn't. I just ran the HArd-SPL for G4 which auto detects for G4 and it passed

If you have a Wizard, it would be HTC P4300 / Qtek 9100 / Qtek A9100 / Dopod 838 / i-mate K-JAM / T-Mobile MDA Vario / O2 Xda Mini Pro / O2 Xda Mini S / Orange SPV M600 / Orange SPV M3000 / Cingular 8125 / Vodafone VPA Compact II.

Perhaps you didn't read and understand it correctly. Your phone is x.xx (3.08) and not x.xx.xxx1 (3.08.0001) got my point ?
