Hi,
Based on the many forums posts I have read, I would like to clarify the following questions.
1. When I change the firmware of my Softbank X01TH from Japanese to English, will I be able to input Japanese characters (Kanji, Hiragana) into the phone. (For uses such as names, etc)?
(yes based on this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1054547&postcount=9 )
2. Can the Softbank X01TH send emails to other providers e.g DOCOMO, AU?
3. If I choose to use gmail/yahoo as my primary mail service on my phone, how often are you checking to see if new messages have arrived? What are the kind of costs you are incurring when no Wi-Fi access is available?
Thanks for your help.

yes, you can, but you have to install some japanese input system yourself.

basically, you CANNOT use mms (mobile phone email) on x01ht although there are a couple of walk arounds. (search in this forum.) On the other hand, it is a computer with mobile internet connection and comes with an email client program. if you create an email address with gmail or something, you can, of course, send email to anyone in the world from x01ht as you said below (and above.)

i live in a busy world, and do not need to check my personal email simulteniously, so i have set it to check gmail pop email every 30 min automatically. also, sms is enough for me for simultenious communication. but i know that some others need mms although i don't know why.
as for the cost, it's simply up to your own contract. i subscribe to this flat rate packet discount, and it costs me, at most, about 12,500 a month in total (Y1,837 for basic call plan with family discount, Y315 for internet service and Y10,290 for packet connection.) by the way, i don't use it as a phone, and do not make any phone calls with it.

Hmm...Y10,290 for the connection? Mine is only Y5700 for a flat rate...whats the difference?

i intentionally excluded the initial 42% discount until january, and said "at most, 12,500" in total since some people might have a look at this thread after january 2007.

i think you are misunderstanding the flat rate dicount plan. it goes with these three categories.
mms mail and yahoo mobile only: 980 to 4200 max
pc site browsing: 980 to 5700 max (this is what you have in mind)
pc site direct: 980 to 9800 max (this applies to x01ht using open)
so, when the consumption tax is included, the max will be 10290.

Makes sense now...thanks...but when i signed up, i was told there is only one plan and it is mandatory to take it..which was the 5700...hmmm...

as i said, there is a discount until january. (percentage revised in my previous post.) it is Y5,985 (inc. tax) instead of Y10,290 until january. i guess Y5,700 is about this discount excl tax...

Softbank is really confusing. What is the difference between "PC Site browsing" and "PC Site direct". I just checked their website and simply don't understand.

PC Site browsing: use of full browser to view normal webs by non-x01ht mobile phones.
PC Site direct: use of internet access on 3gpp by x01ht.

it is confusing isn't it? what they call the flat-rate packet plan is basically just one plan but they apply different charging schemes i mentioned in earlier post depending on which device you use. the minimum charge is the same for three schemes and it's 980 yen w/o tax.
it appears the base scheme is for using MMS and internet services limited to mobile phones, namely yahoo keitai (previously vodafone live). i believe this applies mainly to non 3g devices they sell but not sure. at least this doesn't apply to x01ht. the max ceiling is 4200 yen w/o tax.
pc site browsing applies to devices equiped with full browsers to view general web sites. i believe those are their 3g devices except for x01ht, but don't know which model that is. the max ceiling is 5700 yen w/o tax.
it reads in their detailed doc in japanese that pc site direct applies to x series devices. they only have one model in their x series at the moment and that is x01ht. the max ceiling is 9800 yen w/o tax.
and, what is further confusing is they will keep this max ceiling at 5700 yen w/o tax until jan 07. you only have to pay 5700 plus tax until jan 07 no matter how much you use, but you will have to start paying up to 9800 from feb 07 depending on the usage.

Thank you again for your patience to explain this. I think I got it. Funny enough: I asked our (Japanese) IT manager to check the Japanese version of the Softbank tarif scheme, and even he gave up. :o
