View Full Version : Killer Apps, get help making a list?

I just found Microsoft's Windows Live Search app for Mobile 5.0 and was blown away.
http://wls.live.com
It works like Google Maps but it doesn't suck like the Java based Google Maps I found online; it features optional Bluetooth GPS support, street and sat maps, it's free, it shows Traffic, helps locate local items like Resturants and helps with directions.
Is this the killer app? What are your favorites? Maybe we can make a list for other people to find programs they'll love as much as I love this one.
Rob
Summary so far...
Kevin Baker - My killer apps have to be Resco Explorer and Microsoft VoiceCommand.
Brian McGuire - Must install: Newsbreak 1.2
Lucid - Reperion GPS app
Ellistyle - 1-Calc is a great unit/currency converter (oh--and calculater) & Pocket Informant is a must
SINC - INESOFT Address Book, one handed contact lookup
Dandie's list...
PocketBreeze - best today plugin for a good overview of your appointments, notes, tasks, birthdays etc.
SPB PocketPlus - Still the most complete collection of must have extensions for Windows Mobile (TastManager, Today launcher and much more)
GPRS Monitor - A must if you have to count your GPRS/UMTS traffic
PocketZenPhone - The one and only phone profile switcher. Feature monster!
SpaceTime - More than a calculator. This is almost a math software. Competes with the most advanced scientific calculators on the market (like TI-89)
Pebbles - Very nice and free tool to remote control your pc. Can work like a touchpad
TCPMP - The one and only video player
MortPlayer - The one and only music player
SKTools - Very good collection of system tools
SpriteBackup - The classic backup tool
BGjr - Another *BIG* vote for mortplayer here. It's the only player that I can I get to work completely
Mviana - Felxmail 2007
lajson - I would higly recomend GSPlayer for mp3 and acc audio and internet radio station lissening with a tons of settings and equalizer
srmz - Another set of great applications from Softmaker which is Textmaker (Word Processor) and Planmaker (Spreadsheet).
music man - GoodLink - exchange server sync
wwwes - mapopolis GPS app, pocket stars - very nice star chart software
armedmetallica - Jetware Hands-free Extension provides additional functionality to the built-in Windows Mobile support for the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile
hotnan - Cash Organizer
dny238 - Windows Live Messenger Beta this app fixes all my problems syncing with Hotmail
I've stopped maintaining the above list...
Look here instead. Keep adding to this post, or add your stuff to the Wiki instead. I like the Forum's email alert feature.

The only issues I have had with it are related to the GPS connectivity and occasional lockups.
If I leave it running while I go into a store, frequently when i return to the car I can't get it to start communicating with the GPS again without quitting the entire application and starting it back up. Seems like simply unchecking GPS and rechecking from the Menu should do the job.
No other killer apps out there?

My killer apps have to be Resco Explorer and Microsoft VoiceCommand.
Resco Explorer... easy viewing of available memory, quick access to a (much better than the built in) file explorer, and a nice registry editor.
Microsoft Voice Command... fantastic! Never before have I used voice recognition that works so well, and doesn't require training!!

So -- which browser do folks use? I have been playing around with Opera Mini -- which looks good. Can't figure out how to reprogram my upper right button to select it though (since, as a midlet, it does not show up separately in the program list)

How the heck do I enter specific addresses for directions? It only lets me get directions from city to city, no directions to specific streets.
edit: I'm not using a GPS and I was testing on Wifi btw. I guess I'll try it out using Edge tomorrow at work, I get a weak GPRS connection at home and can barely connect.
Also, some searches seem to work, other searches don't. Maybe it'll work better over cellular data

I am a big fan of "INESOFT Address Book". Its fantastic to be able to look up contacts with one hand, and be able to choose to SMS them or call them with one hand and have big picture displays with clear big buttons when you get phone calls from people. Integrates perfectly and is by far the best thing i've installed on my Pocket PC.
I can now call, look up, and get around most of my communicating hickups i was experiencing before with 1 hand. My pocket pc is starting to feel like a mobile phone again. YAY!

Agreed, it seems to be fantastic, but I can't seem to be able to do searches for files anymore, has that happened to any of you?
edit: i should rephrase that...now that the original search program has been replaced with live search, how does one search for local files?

Another *BIG* vote for mortplayer here. It's the only player that I can I get to work completely with my iTech R35 clip (full A2DP and AVRCP) on the SPV M3100 (TyTN). Combine it with a large memory card and the QVista skin and you have an unbeatable combination.
Unfortunately Mort's website forum database appears to have died a death right now, so I can't post links. However the version I'm using is 3.31RC6, and it works a treat.
That GPRS Monitor software looks interesting - is it free and where can I find it?

Had an email from the support team regarding a UK version:
"........If you hadn't noticed already :), the app actually does work in the UK...it's just not well tested or supported (so we're not really advertising that publicly). Things that you might notice if you use it--the "choose location" dialog assumes that you're in the US, so you'll often need to specify the country as well as address/city; and our data coverage might not be perfect, so you might notice spotty results"
So to find somewhere in the UK you search for something like Chester,England or Chester, UK.
Works well with a GPS as also. Shame there's no data for traffic or categories, etc.

oh no no, my thumb down for Flexmail 2007. Damn slow, little added value, SMSing is a pain, too complex design and little outcome.
It's a real problem what to replace Pocket Outlook with. So I stick to the build-in mailer until I find a better one. Have been using ProfiMail on SE P910i, but on Pocket PC it is crap.

Another set of great applications from Softmaker which is Textmaker (Word Processor) and Planmaker (Spreadsheet). These really bring the power of your desktop to your device. The best thing is if you transfer files between the PPC and the Computer you do not loose a bit of formatting which you otherwise experience with the included pocket word and pocket excel.
Though slightly expensive but if you are into serious word-processing and spreadsheets these programs are highly recommended. Softmaker has recently issued new versions of these excellent applications

Mine has an issue of when I close it, it goes awa, but stays in memory, ad ca't be launched again. I have to force it to close from the memory settings app. But, as you said, it's an awesome program, so I'm fine with the downsides. Besides, it's still beta.

Wow! It works in France !! not to the sort of detail I see in Atlanta yet though... ;) What an incredible app!
When I get a GPS receiver, I wonder if it can cache enough information for local maps and just download traffic info etc. from GPRS. That would make this nothing short of amazing
Nice moves!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned GoodLink software yet (http://www.good.com). It is truly a killer app, but your company has to support it at the Microsoft Exchange Server level. However, it's not complex and if you have any influence in the IT organization push to have GoodLink support. It blows away Blackberry's.
My work Outlook emails, calendar, contacts and notes are constantly in sync with my Cingular 8525 and I never have to hook up to my work PC directly. You can receive and send Outlook invitations.
The only complaint I have is that emails are sent and received in text, so HTML is stripped off.
Also, the built in Contacts and Calendar applications on the PDA are not touched. This allows me to have a personal calendar and set of contacts that doesn't merge or conflict with my work calendar and contacts. If I should lose my job, I don't need to worry about all my personal information being lost.

How did you get the 8525 (with Good Client) to sync with your company GoodLink? Do you have to add your device IMEI / Serial to the Good Link server?
I downloaded the Good Client application (Get Good link) and installed on it on my 8525. But when I run it, it asked for a "PIN".
I also have a Palm Treo 650 that have been configured to connect to my company GoodLink server and I have browsed through the configuration settings in the Good Link application in this device, but I don't see anything that resembles a "PIN".
My thought that if I installed the Good Client application on my 8525 and configure it with the SAME username, password, and server configuration as my Palm Treo 650, I am good to go.

Hi, this is my very first post. I still haven't a Tytn but i'm looking for it. Together with other WM5 users on a italian forum, i had an idea for a very useful app. I often use a bluetooth headset while driving and if i get a call i don't know who's calling, because i have my phone in a pocket.. at least i can a custom melody for each contact group, but it's a partial solution. I would like to have an app that could say the caller name or number (with a text to speech engine lilke loquendo) in place of the ringing tone, in real time.
A simpler solution to that would be a program that reads entire contact list, generates one .wav file for each contact (with text-to-speech as well) and assign the .wav file as custon ringing melody for each contact. (it would not however recognize unknown numbers). What do you think?? :)
PS: moderators, make this thread sticky! :)

there are a few apps I use that don't come with wm5 that I consider to be killer apps.
if you have a bluetooth gps puck and live in the us, check out the trial of mapopolis. very configureable, favorites, custom landmarks, voiced directions....nice.
if you like astronomy, check out pocketstars by nomad electronics. very nice star chart software. www.nomadelectronics.com

1. Cut a hole in your pocket?
2. A ringtone activated popup door in your trousers/pants?
3. Customised vibrate duration, depending on how attractive the caller is?
4. See through pants/trousers
5. Dashboard cradle (sorry, bit too sensible!)
Apologies, sofisticated bump in progress. Fine idea, but then so are many ideas on the board so I doubt the sticky request will succeed:) Welcome to the Forum.

mike has a point there... however interestingly(did i spell that right mike? lol) enough im glad that someone brought that up, it reminded me of something that i encountered the other day and forgot all about it. But i was at my doctor getting my anual check up (no im not 40 yet) but he had a treo i think and when he would get a call it would announce the number that is calling... an app like that would be cool

This is FANTASTIC!
I'm in Sydney, Australia and it works well here. I played around with it while connected to my wireless router.
Just have to work out how much data is being used to see if it's worthwhile using over UMTS/HSDPA as data charges are quite steep here...

I just rediscovered Google maps. The last time I tried it it was a Java applet. Bleh...
This version is now a cab. I like WLS better on my style of phone, but all the guys in the office with blackjacks prefer the google version. It works better with 'phone' styled devices. Their touch screen stuff just seemd half baked in this version to me.
One feature I really like is the ability to search for an address out of Contacts.

can you post the cab? I tried to go to the link above but it kept on saying that my mobile phone "...may not be supported..." and all I can download is the Java MID file, now the cab.

My favourite WM5 programs:
pocketMax phoneAlarm (http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html) - Skinnable visual notification of SMS, Email, missed calls, bluetooth, headset on/off. It also has profiles and a built in GPRS monitor.
Wisbar Advance (http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products.php?prod=WisBar+Advance) - I get bored with the same old look, so I like to change up the look with this program. I'm currently using a skin called "Vista Portable (http://www.xcskins.tk/)"
Wisbar Advance Desktop (http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products.php?prod=WisBar+Advance+Desktop) - This plugin for Wisbar Advance allows for multiple today screens. You can place icons, buttons, today plugins anywhere on the screen. This program CHANGED MY PDA LIFE!!!!!
Marsware Weatherpanel (http://www.marsware.net/WeatherPanel/main.htm) - Great today plugin for updated weather information.
RealDice Multiplayer Championship Poker (http://www.realdice.com/poker) - Not really an "essential" app, but I love this game. I can play online through GPRS. Fake money only though lol
I attached some pics of my main today screen and one of my sub-today screens for MS Office Mobile. On my main today screen, from top to bottom:
- RAM information (from Wisbar Advance Desktop)
- Marsware Weatherpanel
- Good old Pocket MSN
- "Links" to my sub-today screens
- pocketMax phoneAlarm

These are such great lists!
I use my Hermes for business and it is so important for it to look good. I have installed every theme, skin and cutomization I can find. I like my Hermes so much that I have even made it look like an iPhone cause I think that is so cool.
I also think you can't have enough Today Screens or icons, cause it is so tedious to go Start > Programs or Start > Settings. I even have shortcuts to shortcuts just so I can use more cool icons.
Knowing what the weather is going to do 4 days in advance also allows me to get my wardrobe prepared so I am dressed appropriately. A Weather bar is indispensable for me.
I don't care that my Hermes is always needing resets and that it freezes whenever i want important client info, or when I taking orders, or replying to clients requests, etc: it looks so cool though.

Agreed! www.emoze.com is an outstanding FREE push email solution with or without MS Exchange.
As long as the PC Connector software is running in background of your computer, switched on & connected to the internet and the small mobile client installed on your PPC, you have a local mail server to sync and push your mail at time intervals you can set.
Plus it works with web based mail (Gmail etc.) Really nifty programming and has no big footprint on your mobile.
anyone try Emoze? I use it to get my email. I love it! Works really well for me.
http://www.emoze.com
HOW EMOZE WORKS
Aiming to succeed in the Mobile Mail Revolution, emoze has designed its system to support all cellular and wireless networks, as well as a wide range of mail data sources and different types of mobile devices. The emoze service can work behind a corporate firewall or on your home desktop firewall without any modifications or settings.
emoze is comprised of the following architectural components:
-- emoze PC Connector
-- Emoze Global Service Network (EGSN)
-- emoze Mobile Client
emoze PC Connector
emoze PC Connector is a small application running in the background of any windows-based PC. It is optimized to work with Microsoft Exchange Server or any POP3/IMAP Mail Servers. emoze PC Connector can be installed on a corporate or home PC, regardless of the type of network and security restrictions that are implemented on it.
The emoze PC Connector integrates with the MAPI component of the mail application on the PC. The PC Connector monitors the activities in the mailbox configured as the default profile of the mail application, and transfers all changes, compressed and encrypted, to the EGSN.
Data received by emoze PC Connector from the EGSN is written into the mailbox through the MAPI component insuring that all the changes made on the mobile device are updated in real-time.
Emoze Global Service Network (EGSN)
The Emoze Global Service Network is a globally accessible network infrastructure. EGSN makes it possible to manage connections to multiple carriers and networks, using a single PC Connector.
Code Division Access (CDMA) 1xRTT, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (1xEV-DO) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) are all supported by EGSN, and all other available cellular and wireless networks as well as networks that will be available in the future.
The EGSN is responsible for the Registration and Authentication process, as well as to keep an always-on connection between the emoze PC Connector and the emoze Mobile Client.
The EGSN monitors the connection of multiple PC Connectors and Mobile Clients. It notifies both the PC Connector and the Mobile Client about the availability of the related peer, in order to enable a real-time synchronization.
The EGSN acts as a router between two connected peers. It does not store or decrypt the messages transferred through it. The messages remain in their encrypted form during the entire route until they reach the Mobile Client or the PC Connector.
Emoze Mobile Client
The emoze Mobile Client is extremely lean and sophisticated software that resides on the mobile device. It communicates with the EGSN in order to receive in-coming emails and authenticates decrypts and sends them onto the mobile device inbox. Working in the mobile device background, emoze utilize network performance The application does not slow-down the general operation of the mobile device or interferes with other device functionalities, such as placing a call or sending an SMS message. emoze Mobile Client operates Smart Communication Modes (SCM) to let the EGSN know whether the mobile device can receive mail at a particular time.
SECURE MESSAGE DELIVERY
Thanks to the emoze Mobile Mail Revolution the mobile office vision is now available for all. But in order to make sure it can indeed be used safely and without risk, careful thought was given to the protection of the infrastructures and transmissions.
emoze implements end-to-end information security and maximum network and mobile defense. emoze's Military Grade security standard includes protection of the internal network and of the mobile device, using AES-128 encryption for full secured transmission.
The emoze security is ensured by both advanced technology (AES-128), and shared encryption key. The latter means that only the sending and receiving parties can read the data. All messages are encrypted behind one's firewall (either home or corporate network), and can be decrypted only when they reach the right mobile device or PC. Encryption keys are stored in the user's mobile device and PC. No data and no encryption key, at any point, are accessible within the EGSN or over any wireless network.

Yeungman........How did you change your screen lock icon and move it?
I actually don't use the built-in screenlock. I use a separate program: pocketMax screenGuard (http://www.pocketmax.net/screenGuard.html). I like this program because it integrates with my phoneAlarm nicely (i'm using the beta version that works with WM5). Also, if a call is coming in, the program unlocks the green "answer" button so that I don't have to manually unlock the device, answer the call, then relock everything. This feature needs phoneAlarm I believe.
I use Wisbar Desktop to link a custom icon to the program.
