8-way control pad?

Just tried playing a couple of games on my P3600 but the joypad doesn't seem to respond to 8-way controls, only 4-way. Can anyone verify if this is indeed the case? It seems pretty poor for a modern device to not be able to cope with 8-way controls?!?

All P3600 will react the same, so it's not your device. I'm afraid that in normal utilization using 2 direction at a time is not required functionality.

This seems like a real step backwards. How difficult or expensive would it have been to include this!?!
