I've got a quick question on the ROM, how much free memory space do we get on the AKU 3.5 after soft reset?
and does AKU3.2 and AKU3.5 use different PIM databases?
Lt.Cmdr.Ivan

I got 30 MB free space after first softreset.

I have flashed with this 3.5 ROM but there are not the extras that helmi includes in his ROM that are so useful, such as a VGA version that really works (with changes to menu fonts etc ...)
Are there additional programs anywhere else ?
Also does not have Windows Live & the new icons in Helmi's ROM

Seems to me that Ivars rom is a 'vanilla' rom where Helmi is more features....
Would be user preference then.
If you search about you should find some of the apps.
Looking forward to trying this as even though Helmi's ROM is great I don't use alot of the extra apps.

There are no extra apps, because i want to know how stable it works. Extras are added afterwards, when the rom works really good and stable.

This doesn't seem to be working on this ROM either, I really need this.
I can see your point about not including software if people don't actually want it but most of that included in Helmi's are pretty useful especially VGA.
Icons are only pretty but it is good to see a change from the standard ones.
As Smart Dial doesn't work I can't see how people will want to use 3.5 at all, stable or not.

SmartDialler is the first thing I turn off after a re-flash anyway. Can't stand the thing!
Downloading this now...I've been looking for a "proper" vanilla ROM for ages, even the most basic ones I've found before have too much 'bloat' in them for my liking. This looks like it has the potential to be the best of the bunch so far!

Ivan:
I was excited at first when I heard about it. But after I installed and tried it's not working at all. With other ROMS it would connect for 30-40 secs and disconnect itself but with this it's not connecting for 1 sec.
Hopefully it will be fixed in the upcoming one. Other than that the ROM looks cleaner and nicer. I would really love VGA pre-intalled but I can live with the cleaner ROM.

No, for me it isn't running.... I cannot understand what's happen. After rom upgrade it was (BB) running perfectly. But after a soft reset it leaves to work. I tried to reflash at least 4- 5 times but I cannot obtain it works again.
Do you know if something in the register can "survive" to a hard reset?
Rest of the rom is very fast and no problems, except some messages of cannot connect with Internet sharing some times.
Thanks a lot Ivan by this rom, really has a very good performance.

However, I cannot find the option of Direct Push. Where can I find it?
And when I connect to GPRS, the arrow sign is always moving (usually only moving during connecting, but stays intact after connected). But I can still connect to the internet

Yes, I do have the same problem. It happens to me few times.
Especially I got a issue by the:
WIFI on and device is in sleep mode after turning back the power. The entire Device hangs and only reset resolves the problem.
Moreover I am experiencing issues by pushing the green phone button the device don’t go to phone dial overview

You will never see anything calling itself direct push in any ROM that supports this function. What you need to do to get it working is to set up a sync partnership with an exchange server that has the required direct push functionality, the tell you universal to get messages as they arrive. On older ROMs, or exchange servers without the required updates, this would have tired to send you an SMS command message as email arrived at the server, but on this ROM and any other that supports direct push the mail just gets forwarded to your phone.

Thanx for Lt. Commander Ivan for his new ROM.
Impressions:
- 30 megs free memory after soft-reset (on Today I keep only Date, Messaging, Tasks and Calendar), that's good;
- issue: when the device connects to GPRS (for example, Internet Explorer starts using it), "network strength bars" icon doesn't become "bars and small G", but displays moving and crossing arrows infinitely (internet works ok); that bug is worse than it may seem to be because when the device constantly redraws the icon, it uses CPU, and thus constantly burns power;
- unusual Comm Manager :)
- BUG: Internet Sharing cannot start! It says "Cannot connect for an unknown reason";
- no USB HDD (not a big deal, cause we can install it separately);
- issue: in Settings->Buttons one button is shown as Internet Explorer;
- no Pocket MSN (I don't need it);
- no SmartDialer (for me not a problem);
- no Voice Tags (I don't need it, if required it can be installed separately);
- hooray! it remembers default keyboard at last!
So the most annoying bug for me is Internet Sharing one!

I have taken the plunge and this rom is very quick and seems to work with all the apps I need.
Managed to get MMS working as well as GPRS and wifi ok which I live off. Video call aint there but can live without this as does 99% of people with a 3g phone I think
Would say the new communication manager at the bottom right is a bit tempermental and doesn't run when clicking and also I can't remove that battery level icon next to it either - any ideas?
I reset the universal BEFORE it customised the rom (within 3 seconds) to avoid any issues from the orignal o2 customisations in the external rom - is this recommended way or am I missing out on important tweaks in this vanilla rom?
I did let these run 1st time and noticed the removal of the battery icon in a cab so if anyone has this that would be great!
Cheers for the great work Ivan

I've been using this ROM for a day or so now, and these are my impressions (for information, I didn't run any extended ROM cabs, and have unlocked and cleared my extended ROM):
- It's definitely much "zippier" than my previous AKU2(.2?) ROM, the standard release from O2. It has plenty of RAM and Storage left after install.
- I have had my "Text Messages" disappear once, returning after a soft reset.
- The Comms Manager doesn't like being closed by Magic Button - it tends to switch on the WLAN if closed this way.
- After a period of no signal (up in the hills), I thought that it didn't look like it was picking up signal in an area that I hoped would have signal. I switched off the phone using Comms Manager, but was then completely unable to switch it back on again (or at least it didn't report it was switched on), until I performed a soft reset.
- The known issue about the UTMS/GPRS connection icon is something that I could probably live with, but it would be nice if it could be addressed.
All in all, it's not a million miles away from my ideal ROM. If I could get the levels of stability I've been used to in my O2 ROM on a AKU3.5, then this would be a no-brainer.
It's evident, as reported with all the AKU3.x releases, that the Storage Card isn't mounted early enough for Today apps to pick up icons, and with the Extended Rom unlocked, I noticed that if you set attachments to be stored on the Storage Card, then they get put in a folder called "Storage Card" instead, and the Storage Card gets mounted as "Storage Card2". I haven't yet tested to see whether apps that are installed to Extended Rom either work, or have their icons available to Today apps.
Hope this info is useful. Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Steve.

Another issue appears to be that if you disconnect the phone by pressing the "soft" button on the screen, then the icon at the top stays as a handset until you press the red button.
I suspect that the icon issues on the top bar are all related, somehow.
I must admit, although I'm not one for poncy phone skins and the like, the dialer I had on my O2 had a couple of pieces of functionality that I liked:
1. It didn't assume an international number as you were dialling, putting brackets and stuff in.
2. It picked up on previously dialed numbers and contacts, so you could start dialing, and see a number you had already used, and simply select that to dial.
Having said that, I prefer the general look of the default dialer skin provided in this ROM, even though it truncates my provider's name (T-Mobile UK), and doesn't have video call facility (which I don't use anyway).
Cheers,
Steve.

I heard that this issue is found to be related to rilgsm.dll file .. now I don't understand ... it's a known issue since the begining of all AKU3.x versions and now we reached to AKU 3.5 ... when it will be solved then ?? ... hope we won't have to wait till we have AKU4.x !! :(

Just a bit more info for those that might be interested. The signal strength icon in this Rom seems a bit screwy, it shows unexpected stuff quite a bit, as I've previously reported it doesn't show you've hung up the call unless you hit the hardware button.
For those people with apps installed to SD not showing their icons on today screens, and so on, I've tried installing to my Extended Rom (after unlocking it), and the applications and icons work fine. So, even if you don't want to install an app there, you could copy the executable to Extended Rom, and get your today app to pick the icon up from there (if the facility is available - I use cLaunch, and it works fine doing this, or installing straight to Extended Rom).
Cheers,
Steve.

A bit more info - The version of the ArcSoft MMS Composer contained within the ROM v3.5.1.5 exhibits the behaviour, as mentioned on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284720 which means that new messages go into a folder called "New", and only go to the "Inbox" when read. How odd.
I guess this is probably working as designed, but I wonder whether it's worth using an earlier version to avoid this weird behaviour.
Cheers,
Steve.

You included the Extended Rom kitchen and I followed the instructions to start cooking my own Rom.
I Decoded the ms_.nbf with the HTC64ExtendedRomTool.
Then I tried to open the ms_.fat file with WinImage.

Can you help me on the road a little bit?

I am a bit confused here. Is there an AKU by Microsoft with a higher version number than 3.0 ? Or is this all homebrew. Wich AKU is best for my german T-Mobile MDA Pro when I am worried about stability and performance? (as opposed to features and experiments)?

Dear Lt.Cmdr.Ivan:

:) :) :)
You can do it yourself without cooking a new ROM. :D
1. Restore your old ROM.
2. Just in case you need some other software other the PMSN (Pocket MSN), use "Total Commander" (freeware), copy the entire Windows directory into you SD Card. Skip those files which says cannot be copied. You can also copy from Activesync using your PC File Explorer.
3. Upgrade to the new ROM that you want.
4. From your Windows backup, look for files "PMSN*.*" & "InstMsgr.exe" and copy them back into your new Windows directory.
5. You can run the PMSN.exe direct.
6. Or you can create a shortcut to it and copy to "\Windows\StartMenu\Program\", so you can find it in "Program". You can look up for tutorials on creating shortcut from this forum.
7. It works again.
Or
1. Search for Windows Live in this forum, download the cab file, install it.

Hi,
I finaly upgraded my Qtek 9000. Had a few problems and was stuck in boatloader mode for a couple of hours, I finaly switched to a fresh loaded battery and managed to install the new rom.
Anyway.
I now have some problems.
My phone tries to be connected constantly (GPRS or 3G). I can not disconnect by pressing the "Connected Icon" at the top as I could before but that isnt any problem but when I try to disconnect in Comm manager it directly reconnects.
I dont know but I get the feeling that this will drain the battery faster when the phone trys to connect all the time. I also gives me another problem, when I go down in my cellar where I dont have a phone connection, the phone tries and tries to connect and blocks the possibility to connect with wifi. Very annoying.
Is there a solution for my problem?
Thanks in advance,
Miki

That's great news. Unfortunately, I felt I had to return back to AKU2 ROM with the holiday's nearly over, as I just wasn't enjoying the stability with the Test Rom that I had been used to. With work starting up again, I need a device that I can rely upon a bit more, but I'm eager to try out your next test version, especially if it's got the stability I'm after.
What are the key differences between the test versions, would you say?
Cheers,
Steve.

Hi,
As you can see I have been pretty busy skinning my device, using existing skins and added my own sauce to it...

The only thing that I cannot manage to skin is the dialpad. From the screenshots you can see it looks pretty ugly now...
Any ideas which dialpad skin I can apply? I tried Helmi's Crossbow skin, but it does not work in this ROM.
Thanks,
Ireneus

Hardest tool to find was the dciNoBar to remove the softkeys on the Today screen.
BTW: This skin also works great in Portrait mode...

Just posted the links to the Skins I used (all credits to Bob_55!), but I don't want Ivan's thread to become a "Skins" discussion...
Reason for my post was to illustrate (and the illustrations came out BIG... :)) that the dialpad looked.... ehm... not so nice.
So... the question still remains: did anyone manage to create a dialpad skin for Ivan's Rom?

Hi Ivan and guys,
I've tried Helmi's AKU3.5 because of some minor bug's are fixed but, using it, i found it very unstable... (gprs connection very unstable, i don't know why).
So, I've retried the Ivan's AKU 3.5.
Now i find it very stable.
Summary:
- Phone and data connection are ok and stable: wifi connection is reestablished automatically after suspend (it was not so for me with aku3.2)
- Keyboard driver works, i can use accented character i was not able to do with helmi (maybe because of preload keybd layout settings, my fault but i'm not sure).
- Speed is ok, not big differences with helmi.
Features:
- Smartdialing is not installed (better until it does not work with aku3.5)
- video telephony plugin not installed (fine, i don't use it)
- New HTC Task manager is not installed (does anyone know where can i find it?)
- pdf reader not installed (great, i usually replace clearvue with poketxpdf)
- bluetooth profiles are available as cab installation file (fine for me, i don't use them)
Bugs:
- When i install new software, not all installed packages appear in remove-programs applet.
- when data connection is established (gprs) the icon on top continues loading while in other roms the small "G" appears
Minor bugs:
- Button 4 Press & Hold seems working with notes.exe/hotvoice.exe even if the 405C key is not present in the registry so we can not change settings (better i found them not working in helmi)
Improvements:
- It seems to manage battery better than before also with the new battery indicator.
- Internet Explorer is the last one with high resolution support (however i use opera)
Conclusion: very good rom, i love vanilla ones, i'll use it but the data connection icon blinking is very annoying, and htc "light" task manager and smartdialling probably are a must for rom's
PS: sorry for my english.
PS2: please keep vanilla roms really vanilla... ;)

Hello Ivan,
Vanilla version is really great! I found it better than other ROM's from stability point of view.
Some friends has requested to include HTC task manager in the rom. Personally I prefer not to include. Because I've observed a serious conflict with some other task manager, for instance, Wisbar Advance and iLauncher etc. I think many of us using these tools and you'll notice the conflict or noticed it already.
Please keep the vanilla as long as you can and provide all other useful software/tools as saperate cab so that someone need it has the option to install.
All the best. Cheers!

daniel.eriksson - I take it you were using the old "Test2", because Wlan works perfectly well when using the new "Test2" - Download it again and give it a go.
Ivan - I see you got rid of the newest connection manager in the new "Test2". As someone who uses pushmail (it is one of the main features of AKU3.5, after all) I'd like to see it back so that I can control my exchange connection easily again.
This is certainly the closest I've found to my ideal ROM so far. I think I'll make a couple of my own personal tweaks to nk.nbf (like getting back "Commmanager2" and adding a few little freeware programs that I always use) and I'll be sticking with it long-term - until I track down a working Crossbow Rom, that is!
Many thanks Ivan!

Hi Ivan,
thanks for this excellent work (test2). Here are a few things i have mentioned using your version:
Bugs:
1. I can confirm the bug reported by WIZ. When I use GPRS or UMTS (T-Mobile Germany) with IE or PocketWeather these arrows move. Also if there is no data-transfer with the internet. When I close the internet connection the arrows disappear, everything is o. k. again.
2. When booting after a soft-reset, there comes an error message just before I can enter the phone PIN - "sddaemon.exe" can not be opened. Seems to have no influence on the functionality.......but makes me nervous. By the way: this happened also with one of your older versions (I think it was AKU 3 Beta 10 but I am not sure). What is the use of this file?
3. When you use the "Wireless Manager" and close it with the big cross (X), you can not re-start it with the "Wireless Manager Icon" on the today screen (I mean the icon right beside "Battery") - nothing happens. After a soft-reset the "Wireless Manager Icon" on the today-screen works again. You can avoid this behaviour when you close the "Wireless Manager" with the "DONE-Button".
Some advantages of your ROM (in contrast to helmi_c: 3.5 V1.3 - I´ve tested it for several weeks):
- More Prog.-Mem. (on my Uni: > 25 MB)
- very fast, a little bit faster than helmi_c
- the battery lives 1.5 to 2 times longer than with other AKUs (T-Mobile, QTEK, helmi, Ivar......)
I will go on testing and reporting,
thanks again for your work (and helmi´s too, because its also excellent!)

1) WLAN is working
2) Comm Mgr once you have click it..you cannot click it anymore..due to it is still running on background..either you stop it manually or like me i installed htc x
3) GPRS connection is working but bit slow..maybe due to connections with service provider
4) however the connecting arrows still moving even you are already connected
5) video call is working
6) MMS suddenly stop halfway...

I just got a Jabra 8010 and I was playing music, it seems slow. Thought it was the BT making it slow, found and partially detangled my wired headphones, and it plays slow through that too. Slow just through speaker too.
Has any one using this rom experienced this?
BTW, for those who want the Jabra 8010, it is cool, not HUGE, geek looking thing, and works OK.. If it is in your pocket or in a side case, it can cut out on music every 30 seconds or so, if you turn your head, yep, cut out.. I went for a bike ride and got frustrated, clipped my big ol www.pdaskins.com man purse on my collar next to my neck and had no problems..
Which brings me to my next question, i was reading about some antenna mod for the Himalaya the other day.. The radio antenna is the big one on the right and the BT antenna is smaller and on the right.
My wifes BT antenna got lost so I made one with a piece from an old laptop.
I am wondering if I should take it apart and maybe try extending the antenna by soldering a piece on it. Her Himalaya seems to work better than stock.

Hi Ivan,
I'm still happy with this Rom everything works fine.
I mean WLAN, Mediaplayer.. and so on.
The only thing what's really anoying is gprs connection icon that won't stop synchronising, I meen the two arrows when connecting to Internet.
Do you have a solution for this?
Also (my opinion) you should mention that when you start flashing the new Rom, first of all people should cleare the extended Rom.
I meen, make it visible and unlock and the delete everything in it.
Then remove storage card, go in to bootloader and flash.
My memory with some apps installed (on storage card) is still 29,85mb after softreset.
Thanks, Leo

Even easier than unlocking, unhiding, and deleting the extended ROM, you could just flash an empty Extended ROM file.
Just copy an empty "ms_.nbf" file into the same folder as the nk.nbf file and flash as usual. Then the upgrade will automatically leave you with nothing in the ExtROM.
There's and empty ms_.nbf included in Helmi's ROM archive if you happen to have downloaded that...

I'd say that this ROM is great apart from a couple of little issues. The notification icons are probably the biggest issue, as Laurentius says the gprs icon constantly "syncs" while connected, and I've seen the signal meter doing the ".", "..", "..." thing as if it's searching even when connected, rather than showing signal strength.
Another little issue is with the Comms Manager, if you use Magic Button (who wouldn't? ;-D ) and close the Comms Manager via the [X] rather than hitting the [Done] soft button, then it seem to switch on WLAN. Also, it would be nice if it had an icon.
I don't know how much of this stuff can be corrected by the guys who put these ROMs together. All I know is that this ROM is a big improvement over the AKU2 ROM in terms of speed.
Cheers,
Steve.

Ok, thank you for this, I also got a copy of Helmi's rom so I will see next time.

There's and empty ms_.nbf included in Helmi's ROM archive if you happen to have downloaded that...

first of all thank you for this great image, it's really fast. i found a couple of issues:
1) as already noted there's no push switch in the connection manager. setting the synchronization schedule to "as items arrive" will work BUT only with GPRS/UMTS: if WiFi is on and no GPRS/UMTS connection is available it won't sync. even worse if the network is unavailable for a while the push connection is lost and is not reconnected automatically.
2) tonight i left universal with both GPRS/UMTS and WiFi on and apparently during the night something happened and emails stopped synching. even worse GPRS/UMTS connection won't connect anymore saying that the access point is not available. just resetting the device made it connect again smoothly.
thanks!

I have now tested this rom for 3 days and am very happy. Namely camera better, much faster than before, more stable, less power consumption.
Main issues encountered are - when I installed with new radio, it then set about customising and installing vodafone ext rom. I realised that because Ivan's doesn't have a blank ext rom to choose from, if you have anything in your ext rom it just installs it. I fixed this by downloading the other aku 3.5 release with the blank ext rom folder and just flashing the ext. Then did hard reset, this time all worked okay with nothing extra installing (wanted a clean install with no operator junk).
Issues: Battery icon - not reliable, says full bars when I have less than 75% battery left. The gprs etc connection arrows just keep cycling even if you are connected. Nothing else, at least nothing that wasn't always a problem (eg it still doesn't have an external display!).
Nice work and easy to use, choice of a blank ext would have made it a bit smoother for me.
Greg.

You can get the empty extROM (ms_.nbf) from Helmi_c's AKU 3.5 ROM. You can get the ROM from here:

I like the X-Button, really handy, short press, the app stays open, long press the app really closes. Beside that I use dinarsoft Handy menu to switch between tasks and this really little app (69kb) shows also: memory and battery. Also you can make screenshots with it do a softreset, shows you ip adres etc,etc...

Yes, excellent fix! The connected icon shows a [G] regardless of whether you are connected via 2G or UTMS, but it's still a big improvement over the continuously moving arrows. Also, as stated, many of the system icons have been updated with, presumably, the Crossbow versions - sweet!

Okay, so you want to empty the extended ROM without reinstalling the whole ROM, right? If that's the case unlock the ExtROM and delete everything and then just hard reset the device and you're done.

Well you can just unlock the ExtROM and delete everything. But if you installed the apps from the ExtROM, the only way I know you can remove them is by hard reset. If you didn't instal them then you can just delete them.

Sorry, no such problems here - it connects straight away for me. I assume you are using WLAN to connect?
Could it be a DNS type issue? Try using PocketHosts to specify an IP address for your host machine, and see if that improves matters.

I reinstalled it minus my prexisting extended ROM, however I have now reverted back to including the extended Rom from the latest MDA pro netherlands rom.
I have found this combination to be absolutly excellent, for some reason it runs even better than this Rom just in Vanilla Version, no delays in wake up, smoother, and some great extra options such as soft key, and the connection manager works much better now.
I just removed the T Mobile stuff, and with 4GIG SD card there is really no need for the extra 10meg.

Hi Ivan,
I´m sorry to hear that you have no time for an ongoing developmet of AKU 3.5/Test2. Still it is one of the best ROMs. Since my last message in this thread I´ve tested Midgets 0.1 Crossbow version. Well, it´s really buggy and not stable (3 time softstart until the Uni works??!?!!). I think this is up to now a general problem of (all?) Crossbow versions. Some very nice DsignT (joke) icons....that´s not enough. But: it has a very low consumption of energy, means my Uni worked on battery mode for more than 2 days without charging (standard battery! 1640mAh). I remember an AKU (I think it was one of yours) with a compareable energy consumption. I know that you can influence by some settings the energy consumption, but Midgets-Crossbow is significantly lower than other AKUs (WM5). Does anybody know the reason for this?
Hope you find some time (weekend is coming soon...). I am anxious to see your next AKU, wish you (and us) a lot of succsess, thanks a lot

go the the startup folder using file explorer and delete that file. The reason u get that error is because the file is not needed anymore. The best way is to wipe the ext rom (ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Universal/Empty_Extended_Rom). Once wiped u won't get that error. Copy this file into the same folder u launch romupgrade from, and perform a rom upgrade. That will wipe the ext_rom and load the new rom.
