View Full Version : HOWTO: Softbank MMS on X01HT Made Easy

All right Everyone,
Here is the issue for anyone who doesn't know before we get started. If you setup Arcsoft's MMS Composer on your X01HT, you will have something called a 'Decoder Error' whenever you get an MMS message that is more than a couple of words. You can partially solve this issue by using the MMS Resender program, the other issue is that once you use the MMS Resender program you sometimes can not read your MMS anyways, it just comes in as a file that you can not open. But here it is, this is all I know which isn't much, but it's fun to try and get kinda working. My goal here is to create a discussion group solely on finding a 100% successful way to get MMS working, as MMS is AWESOME!
**QUOTE** Basically, softbank's MMS system uses some sort of non-standard MMS notification messages and MMS Composer can not understand them, thus generating error. Somehow, requesting softbank to re-send MMS notifications for the messages remaining on their MMS server cause the MMS system to send standard MMS notifications that MMS Composer can understand, and this time, it can retrieve MMS messages from the MMS server without a problem. MMS Resender basically does this trick **QUOTE** - hiroshiy
Also, you can install the mms composer 3.2, from the newest TYTN rom from HTC but then the Resender program will not work with it, or I have not gotten it to work with it, and although it's cool to have the newest program, you have to use the resender program at present. Anyways, here it is. Oh... and one more thing, the reason why we are using vodafone's proxys and passwords and all that stuff is because Softbank considers the MMS a super crazy uber secret the likes of which we have never seen before. OOHHH KAY.. here it goes.. my step by step guide of awesomeness....
#1. Be Cool, take a minute to reflect on just how cool you are for owning this piece of wonderful technology, and just think while other people are out there swimming, running, playing video games, you are here getting your mms to work! WOO, we are awesome, well at least I think so ehhehehe, NEXT!
#2. Get the stuff you need! Go and download the Asukal's package of Arcsoft's MMS Composer Z. ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Tools_and_Programs/Asukal/PocketMSN_MMSz.zip. Also you will need a registry editor, I recommend Resco Registry editor! Also guys, Resco is cheap and it is a really good program, I really like to support this company, so don't go downloading it from a torrent site like http://www.isohunt.com or nothing, you cheap basterds, common and buy it :D. The third thing you will need is the MMS Resender which can be acquired through the beautiful link here http://www.k5.dion.ne.jp/~ykp/LOVELOG_IMG/MMSResender_v1.1.zip.
#3. Unzip the cab files, and copy the mms_composer_z.cab to your "My Documents" area or where ever you will remember that you put it.
#4. Click on it, and Install it to your device, click "ok to restart your device".
#5. Click on: Start -=> Settings -=> Connections "Tab" -=> Connections.
#6. Under "My Work Network" click on "Add a New Modem Connection"
#7. You should see "Make New Connection, Enter a name for the Connection", I like to call mine Vodafone MMS to make it abundantly clear that I am connecting to Vodafone's network. You can however name this anything you want! You can even name this "MMS IS SUPER FUNKY FUN!" but, that would mean that you are gay.
#8. You will also see "Select a modem:", change drop down listbox to "Cellular Line (GRPS, 3G)", then click next!
#9. This is where it starts to get technical. Woo, can ya feeeel yer heart pumping with haxxorness? I can! Wooo! This is better than two hot oiled up lesbians with hot matrix clothing makkin out in front of me!..... ok, maybe not... but damn close.. damn close I tell ya! You should see "Access point name:" In this box you want to put "mailwebservice.vodafone.ne.jp", then click "Next". WOO!
#10. You should now see "Vodafone MMS" or whatever you named your connection, at the top! Under "Username" you want to put "vodafonelive", and under "Password:" you want to put "qceffknarlurqgbl" (make sure you type in this password correctly, it can be the source of much frustration! Click next motha fakkaz! Aight.. click "FINISH"!
#11. Click on "Start" -=> "Messaging" -=> "Menu" -=> "MMS Configuration" -=> "Servers" tab. -=> "New". Under "Server Name" type "mailwebservice.vodafone.n" (no this is not a mistake, don't worry about the ".n" ending, we will fix it right away, if you notice you can't type in anymore can you ... k, do what I say and let me do my job damnitt hehehe), Under "Gateway" type "vfkkmmsproxy.vodafone.ne.jp", Under "Port Number" type "8080", Under "Server address" type "http:/mms/", Under "Connect via" in the dropdown listbox choose "My Work Network", Under "Sending Size Limitation" select in the dropdown listbox "248k", Under the "WAP Version" in the listbox choose "WAP 2.0" Click on "OK" in the bottom left hand corner! This should bring you back to the "MMS Configuration" screen. You should now see two things in there. 1) "mailwebservice.vodafone.n" 2) "SampleMMSC" Now, you should have "mailwebservice.vodafone.n" highlighted, and click on "Set As Default" in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Then hold down your stylus on "Sample MMSC" and delete the little kakaroach. "Do you want to delete this server from the server list?" - I have just one answer for you... SAY HELLO TO MAH LITTLE FRIEND.. YES CLICK YES OHH YEAH.. CAN YA FEEL IT ... CAN YA?!?!?! Ok, after all of this, click ok in the top right hand corner of the screen! Then click ok again in the top right hand corner of the screen. Now you should be back to the main today screen.
#12. K, we gotta shut down all the programs that are currently open on your phone cuz we are going to do a little bit of registry editing and we can't have nothing' opened see... nothing I tells ya... nothing! Click on "Start" -=> "Settings" -=> "System" tab -=> "Memory" -=> "Running Programs" -=> "Stop All".
#13. Open up your registry editor. Damnitt, did ya think I was going to tell ya how to click on the icon? AHhhh.. ok... fine.. here we go, onto the longest MMS explanation EVER in the history of the friggen world. Click on "Start" -=> "Programs" -=> "Resco Registry" -=> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -=> SOFTWARE -=> Arcsoft -=> ArcSoft MMS UA -=> Config -=> mm1 -=> XXXXX (this is a random number here chosen by the program, it will be the only number in this directory, ya can't miss it) -=> "Name", then here we finish typing in the name of the Server, so under "String" you will type "mailwebservice.vodafone.ne.jp", click on "Done" then click on the "Yes" for the warning message that comes up! Click on ".." -=> "WspHeader" -=> "User-Agent", then type under "Sting" type "Vodafone/1.0/V802SE/SEJ002" click on "Done" then click on the "Yes" for the warning message that comes up! Now you have to save the changed registry entries to the registry and many people get hung up on this part but, serious, this is one of the most crucial parts. Turn your device off. Just the soft of, you know like sleep mode off, you know not actually turn it off, just sorta turn it off.... ahhhh... I will explain. Just click the button that is just to the right of the video conference call camera lens for like .1 second. Not like 5 seconds, just like .1 second, we just want to turn the display off. Then wait for ten seconds and turn the display back on. Congratulations, the registry has been changed. OK, NEXT we will click on the "X" button in the top right hand corner of the screen. Then "X" again, and you should be back to your today screen. All right. How do you feel? You are almost there!.... can ya taste it? I sure know I can! Reboot your device. Ahh.. geeze.. put the friggen pointy stylus thingie in the bottom of the device's little hole... ahh.. never mind.. if ya can't figure out that one .. ehhehe. next!
#14. Here is the clincher.. go back into MMS in messenger and send yourself an Email to your hotmail or google address. You will get a weird looking email like dsaflkjfasild49037@softbank.ne.jp, this will be your new mms email address. YOU CAN CHANGE THIS... ehhehe.. this is what I did, go to your local Softbank branch, tell them that you want to change your mms address, and they will be like .... sure, no problem, then you pull out your X01HT and they will look mad for a second and then you just tell them that you have bought a mms program over the internet and got it too work, like they know the difference! They will say sure no problem, and they will take out your little sim card and change your mms to whatever you like. Isn't that beautiful? You must however send one mms message from your X01HT for it to give you this painful mms automatically. Then you can change it to whatever you like.
#15. Last but not least, take the MMS Resender program, copy it into the program files directory on your device. Make a link to it and place it on your programs menu, you will need it allot. K, also one more thing, you might wonder to yourselves, "Why isn't he using MMS Resender v1.2", I guess it is because it has never worked at all for me, I will load it up, and nothing at all will happen. If anyone knows the answer to this, let me know! ehehhe. Click on it, click file then open. Should re-receive all your messaged you have ever gotten, but strangest thing is, you still might not be able to read them, so here is where I am stuck. **Damnitt now I am getting a “connect init error” from this stupid resender program, it was working before but, but.. of course now it is not. Anyways, anyone can shed some like on this matter, this is the thread to do it. I want to soely dedicate this thread to MMS debugging and fixing. I want MMS, and I know many, many people do to!**

Dear Joe-san, this is a wondeful piece you have authored here, exactly what I was looking for - inlcuding these
.... two hot oiled up lesbians with hot matrix clothing makkin out in front of me...
Thanks a lot for that. ) :) I know understand why the MMS composer included in my HTC ROM + re-sendder 1.2 never worked.
Pls. don't forget to forward it to Softbank so that they are prepared when we come asking them to change our MMS address. :p

I followed the guide to the letter, and can now for the time SEND MMS. Great! However, the r-sender always gives me the "ConnectIni" Error, regardless whether I use 1.0 or 1.1. I guess there is still something wrong with my settings. Any idea?

Ok people, I figured out what I did wrong. It's actually quite simple, but that is what I guess makes big problems, the simple errors. Also, I am sure that I can get MMS 3.2 working now instead of the MMS 3.0. I will post all my findings later tonight. Here is how you get the resender program to work. Ok, goto 'Start' - 'Settings' - 'Connections' tab - 'Connections' - Under "My Work Network" click on "Manage Existing Connections" then click on the 'General' tab and change the network name to 'VFJP Network'. Click ok, ok, ok. You're done! It should work. Also, I will post a new message tonight on how to get the new MMS Messenger 3.2 to work, it's actually really easy and one more cool thing... I think I might have gotten MMS to work using softbanks servers, we can now maybe do this all on softbanks open connection, but I am in the testing phase. Cuz I'M AWESOME!!!
-Joe
So cool, I have written this whole message on my X01HT.

Ok, tell me exactly what is under your "Start" -=> "Settings" -=> "Connections" tab -=> "Connections" -=> Under "My Work Network" click on the "Manage Existing Connections" link -=> "General" tab and change the network name to "VFJP Network" <=- this has to be EXACTALLY LIKE THIS, otherwise you will get the 'connectiniterror', you must have this exactly like this.
Also, I am just going to try and get the NEW MMS Messenger 3.2 to work, this is going to be awesome, because I think I can get all the settings to work with our open.softbank.ne.jp connection! I think..... SOOOO I'll be back. Damnitt, there has to be more than two people interested in this.. frick, do you know how long it has taken me to get this all working. I think I have finally perfected my Hermes.
Ok, this is what I have done!
Super SIM & CIDed my Hermez.
Hacked Softbanks boot Loader 1.09 and brought it down to 1.04, it's actually not that difficult, and believe me, if I can crack it, if Asukal can crack it, then others can too, just a little trick I learned in College. (Softbank should not put all their eggs in one basket, if this crack is released, it will damage Hermes in Japan? Who in the world thought that they could make something without us figuring out how to unmake it? Do you think your programmers are smarter than everybody else’s programmers? I love that I got my Hermes for free, but, at what price, the price that this will be the only HTC in Japan ever? You guys need a different marketing strategy if you are putting so many eggs in one basket. -JK Next, get POP and SMTP to work perfectly, get MMS to work perfectly, get Hotmail to work in Messenger Perfectly, get my 3G Icon back, get a normal dialler back in there, get GPS working, get some cool games, get some cool apps like msn search live, get Nintendo working, and change the splash screen to the cool logo that one of the kids posted here. That’s it... I love my Hermes.

Ok People!
Here is the facts! I have just got messenger 3.2 to work perfectly with resender and it works awesome. It is fully integrated with Messenger and it works like a breaze. One of the main features, is, it looks a little bit prittier and you can save the attachments that will not open and then you can open them in a message viewer, MMS is now almost perfect. Now to crack mms.softbank.ne.jp, then I will be happy. OK BYE.

I think he is talking about MMS Composer 3.2, it's part of the HTC ROM. The Softbank ROM (Japanese) does not have it, because Softbank claims MMS does not work with the XO. :p

If you put the MMSresender.exe VERSION 1.2 into your /Windows/Startup folder then it will load every time windows does and automatically minimizez itself. Here I thought version 1.2 wasn't working, but it was working all the time, you have to just go into the memory area and activate it to see it. You dont need to do that anyways, because version 1.2 will minimize automatically and then when it detects a decorder error it will automatically grab the mms message without you knowing anything went wrong, and combine all of this with verion 3.2 in the new tytn rom OOOOO it is beautiful, and I think you can just install version 3.2 just by downloading the cab file and clicking on it. It's on this site, just find the extended rom for the newest HTC rom and then download it and click on mms32.cab or whatever it is called. BUT YEAH... it is done.. it is possible... and it works ALMOST flawlessly! WOO!

Seems that this does not work on SoftBank or DoCoMo ROMs... It's possible to extract & install MP_MMS3.2_HTC_GenS_Hermes_061110.CAB from new HTC TyTN ROM, but nothing changes... No MMS options under messaging. I also tried instaling complete HTC TyTN Extended ROM, soft reset, no go. Same on both SoftBank & DoCoMo ROMs.
But Asukal's MMS Composer works on both. (He's the man! ;) ) I noticed that Asukal's Composer has more than 60! files and man Registry entries, it's 2.6 MB in size, while TyTN's cab only has few hundred kb... Something is missing, for sure...
We should ask Asukal to make new version of MMS Composer, right? :D

Could you verify something for me. Cuz initially I thought that the options wern't there either, but I have found them in a different location. They are in "Start" -=> "Messaging" -=> "Menu" -=> "Tools" -=> "Options" -=> And under here I see "Text Messages", "MMS", "(My Pop Account)", and "New Account". What do you see? Of course under MMS is where I configure it. This works absolutely flawless. I also have much less problems with MMS 3.2 than MMS 3.0. It also looks nicer. ehheeheh.
Anyways.. give it a shot, tell me what you see!

I installed MMS resender, MMS composer
I manage to get the MMS in without error messages (ie resender doing its job properly). But the bodies of the MMS are empty. Most of them are 1K size. I sent myself an MMS from my email account in order to check, and I have the same result... (ie nothink in the message)
Besides when I try to send one from my Hermes, it fails...
Would someone have an idea of what I misconfigured ?
Please, help !!

I think I found the source of the problem... It seems that in my MMS configuration, my option "Connect via" automatically resets to something else than "VFJP Network". I cannot say what since it is in japanese in my list, but it s the seventh from the top (Just below Internet)
I created anew server config... But again whenever I come back to the MMS configuration... the connect via option has switched back to this option....
Anybody can check it is the same for him ? Or someone had the same problem ?

It looks like for any connection inputed in English, the system has a corresponding one with a Japanese title (I use the MUI from Asukal)
Whenever I chose one fo the possible connections (Like WAP, Work, Secure Wao, etc...) when I come back to the configuration later, the choice has been switched to one of the Japanese designation in the list (And there seem to be a matching one for one)
So I guess the problem is somwhere else. Besides I would probably not recieve the notices if this setting was wrong, no ?

Flash an English ROM, for the examp e the WWE ROM form HTC South Africa, and the problem is gone. It comes with Composer 3.2, and Re-sender 1.2 is also working. The set-up as described in the initial post works w/o any problem for the Softbank network.

@kilihari - i followed your how to guide MMS setup and receive no error during the setup. i verified the setting back and forth to make sure i typed in the setting value correctly.
the problem that i have now is unable to verify MMS email address.
i went in "Messaging" program and select MMS, click on New button and no New e-mail iinput screen display in order for me to see what is my MMS email address.
but i can do my gmail, hotmail, Text messaging, and Internet via WiFi without any problem at all. i also verified the VFJP Network connection setting, and all field are input correctly. i want to verify the vodafonelive's password.
i used the same one that you have posted "qceffknarlurqgbl". is this correct?
please advice.

MMS Will absolutely continue to work after april first because of all the old vodafone phones. They can not change every single phone, and the can not give all the old customers new phones, so mms will continue to work for a very very long time, I can almost promice you that. Now the only thing we have to worry about is cracking the open.softbank.ne.jp password... and I am doing my best... running through all my different methods to crack that bi@ch.... I will.. I just hope it will be before I am old and gray.... It is more difficult than I thought.
I am currently using the original ROM (I have no problem with Japanese) and I am interested in just adding more apps to fill the missing functionality (MMS and Wireless modem) without needing to reflash to another ROM.
Do you know of anyway to get Composer 3.2 to work with the current Softbank ROM? I tried to install it by just opening the CAB. It seems to install but I don't get any options for MMS in either of the places you mentioned.
TIA.

yes, i can see MMS from both of those place:
1- from Start-Program-Messaging (tab on it), then it take you the messaging area where you can check your gmail, hotmail, outlock and text message. from here i see MMS messaging folder (or box)
also
2- while you are there, i go to Menu (locate lower right side of the screen)
,select Tool, select Options, from here i can see other mail account which also included the MMS

However my problem remains: is it a ROM issue the fact that my MMS are not working (Though I followed your instructions). I get the notifications of MMS, Resender is doing the job (ie no error message), but the downloading (or sending) fails. I may have done one of the steps wrong... Any idea which ?

Why you are stuck on April 1? As we know the new ROM has already been cracked (by Askul) and you can any time change back to Japanese.

My understanding is that he could, but due to some reasons don't want to disclose for the time being. I stand corrected, of course.

yes, i can see MMS from both of those place:
1- from Start-Program-Messaging (tab on it), then it take you the messaging area where you can check your gmail, hotmail, outlock and text message. from here i see MMS messaging folder (or box)
also
2- while you are there, i go to Menu (locate lower right side of the screen)
,select Tool, select Options, from here i can see other mail account which also included the MMS
Well, frick mang ... :D ... there shouldn't be a problem at all! Follow my steps and just do the configuration exactally, and you shouldn't have a problem at all!

MMS Lite 1.0 for X01HT Beta Build 212(4022)
http://www.wince.ne.jp/frame.asp?/soft2002/detail.asp?PID=4022
But when you download the file "MMSLite.ARMV4I_bld212.zip" and extract the contents, you get "MMSLite.ARMV4I_bld215.CAB" and so I thought it was a typo on the file name, but when I installed it, sure enough it sais build 215, so here is a list of improvements they have done to the new one.
#1. Corrects the problem where a "□" is in the subject. If someone sends you a Japanese titled email, you can now read it in native Japanese-o.
#2. Corrected the problem when you are receiving an email and it tries to process the address it will come up with a buffer overrun problem.
#3. Corrected the MMS Mail Lite vanishing problem after a hotsync with the computer.
#4. Fixed the HTML Mail Attachment problem.
#5. Fixed many memroy leaks.
Allright, thanks to me and babelfish, that has been translated. Woo that was difficult, hope I got most of it correct, anyways. I have also attaached a copy of the file to this mail, just incase!

Hello,
I am quite new to this forum. As I have followed this thread as well as other MMS for Softbank thread, my question is what do I do with the MMS Lite Cab other than to install it. On mine it does not seem to do much of anything after the installation other than to say it was installed. Am I missing some steps?
Thanks for anyone's help.
Have a blessed day

I am really Happy with MMS Lite however I have a strange annoying problem compared with my previous phone. It happens a lot, even when my reception is good, that the emaisl I try to sned do not go through. The only way I ahve to get them go is to edit them again and send them again. Sometimes have to repeat the process 5 or 10 times until it agrees to go...
Similarly, I recieve very often emails where I have an hyperlink which allows me if I click it to recieve the email )Get the rets of the message). Is ometimes have to click this 5 to 8 times to actually get the download completed
Anybody experiencing the same problem ?

Turn your device off. Just the soft of, you know like sleep mode off, you know not actually turn it off, just sorta turn it off.... ahhhh... I will explain. Just click the button that is just to the right of the video conference call camera lens for like .1 second. Not like 5 seconds, just like .1 second, we just want to turn the display off. Then wait for ten seconds and turn the display back on. Congratulations, the registry has been changed.

This is the coolest thing since Softbank released a Wm5 device.
...Although it is sort of funny how we are all so excited about 'regaining' a feature (keitai mail) that really should have been bundled with the device at launch.
I bet that Aoi-san (the guy who wrote the program) will be approaching Softbank soon to offer to sell the program to them.
I can't believe he's giving it away for nothing!!
I wish they had an English ported version (to go along with my Asukal English MUI - right now the MMS Lite app is the only thing that shows as Japanese on my phone, hehe!)

That looks like a WM6 device. It is doubtful this tool would support WM6 without some tweaking. (MMSLite does some low-level system calls and if anything is not where it is supposed to be, it probably won't work and might not give an error either unless debug is enabled...)

Check out the Softbank Smartphone page. They are now offering a white version of the X01ht. A friend of mine wanted to get one and asked about MMS. After asking several times, the Softbank agent said that the new X01HT DOES support MMS. Can anyone confirm this?
There is no ROM download available to us older users yet, but the web page description is modified as well. the section that used to say "not compatible with MMS" is also removed.
Does anyone know a way to load this new firmware onto a 'classic' X01HT?

I found the link - not from the PC but from the phone.
Download from Pocket IE - go to "Favorites" - open "My Softbank for X Series" and click "Downloads" - read thru the prompts and it gets downloaded as a CAB file.
By the way I tried this software. Unless you desparately need MMS, not sure if it's worth it. It's slow, has a terrible GUI (you have to stylus your way through everything) and also takes over your SMS. (This means that you have to use the Softbank app to read your SMS instead of the default WM5 Mail application.)
You could use MMSLite if you get your hands on it. A much better (but not supported) implementation.

Can you describe what you deleted and where ?
I am REALLY willing to use this instead of Softbank cranky software...
Or maybe... MMS composer from Arcsoft is in a way better than MMSLite. With MMS Resender it could be actually a better use... What do you think ?

Seems to be working well

Now next step is to cook a new ROM without MMS Composer and with MMSLite instead. NOt easy I guess, since both interact a lot with the registry.. But I'll try !

Actually not working "very well" for me
I ahve to try sending several times in order to be able to actually send my MMS. Recieving them sometimes does not work (or is slow, ie I recieve only a few minutes after the email having been sent...)
Not sure it's from MMS1 or something else...
****EDIT****
Works well now.
Bringing me back to my first question about MMS Composer. I noticed when I was abroad that SMS to other foreign phones were sometimes not working at all... (And sometimes did work)
I was wondering if using MMS Composer coupled with Resender would actually prevent this ? Since Softbank's MMS system is not standard BUT MMS Composer is... this could be a workaround... What do you think ?
Asking many questiosn I know... But since I am trying to cook a ROM, I'd rather do something clean, good and standard...
Thanks for your suggestions :)

If I run Lets Japan5.cab my device becoms unable to sync with Mail2web exchange server. It says the certificate of the server is is not valid
I tried install / uninstall several times... But it doesnt make it...
I tried to reinstall as well the certificate. Unsuccessfully
I guess the soft is messing with some caracters used for the certificate recognition... I dont know
But it sucks...Seems like I wont be able to have both, except if someone finds a solution (I havent...)

If anyone is wondering, MMSLite is way better than MMS Resender.
Now Softbank has released their own SoftbankMail.cab which supports MMS and SMS officially.
The most STABLE product would be softbank's own product but it takes over both MMS and SMS from the default Mail client and has an awful interface.
MMSLite is the most convenient to use but I think sometimes there is a delay to receive mails.

I agree: the Softbank software is terrible. It has one advantage: it does recognize emoticons. But it's slow, crappy, badly written.
I was not sure between resender and MMSLite. but since you say Resender is not as good, then for sure MMSLite is still the only solution (And it works under WM6)
I downloaded the softbank mail software and installed it, but when i try to run it, all i get is a blank white screen. The prgram bar says Softbank Mail or whatever, but there is no menu or anything like that. Any ideas? I removed mms lite before installing it.

according to the japanese x01ht sites, members are at an uproar that
- you need to do a hard reset before installing the software
- if you use WiFi (ie., you have defined an access point, SSID, etc.), then Softbank Mail does NOT work (a patched is scheduled to be released soon)...

Very cool, very easy:
I followed the connection settings part of the guide. Steps 5-10. Then I installed MMS Lite build 265. No registry settings, no mucking about with complex network details in messaging, or anything else. And it works!
Sends fine and receives fine, on and off of a wifi connection.
Thank you, XDA-dev forum, for providing complete newbies with such great information! :D
Only (possible) issue is that the settings and message send/receive notifications are in Japanese. Thankfully my nihongo is decent enough to understand them.
The question now is, do I take the plunge and try to burn a new ROM to get WM6... :)

MMSLite kind-of works on WM6, but seems to cause occasional slow-downs and freezing... if you can handle having to do the occasional soft-reset, it is definitely a better solution than Softbank's mail app! When I tried to run Softbank's mail app, I could only send 58 characters when typing an English SMS... 58 English characters does not a message make, haha:rolleyes:

...and actually pretty easy.
First, extract and copy the attached file EUDC.TTE to your Windows folder on the PPC.
(If you already have a file named EUDC.TTE on your device, you need to rename it before you copy the file.)
Second, use a registry editor to make the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\EUDC
Third, make a new REG_SZ type registry value named SystemDefaultEUDCFont and enter the data as \Windows\EUDC.TTE
Last, be sure to exit your registry editor, have a couple of sips of sake, and then soft reset.
You should now be able to see emoji (albeit in b/w) when you get sms/mms from softbank users.
Inputting emoji is also possible, but more complicated and requires a bit of Japanese. If anyone is interested, please say so.

Thanks larsuck, this really works! I was able to get the font file before but was not sure about registry settings. Thanks again! :p
Next step is to make a color font! (I wish that is possible). These animated gifs of all SoftBank emoji are available for free, but i have no idea how to dynamically replace them with font characters...
So, how we do input? Show us some examples please...

I've converted this into a CAB installer, attached. Dunno how to force a soft reset, sorry. Since this is making a registry change, need to reset by long pressing the power button to turn off/on or use a reset tool. Don't press the reset button with the stylus.
How to enter these with Japanese input?

Okay, what you need first is some software that can append the Japanese IME dictionaries (you do have Japanese fonts and the MS Japanese IME installed, don't you? if not then go get them first). That is what the dicutility.arm cab is.
Then, what you need is a tab-separated value text file of all the emoji and their readings. There are two files here and you should choose between them.
The Japanese pro files have Japanese readings for each separate emoji - so if for example you input わらい (warai), then when you go to change the characters to kanji, the emoji for a smile :) will pop up along with the kanji.
The Japanese noob files have only one reading for all the emoji. So all you have to do is input えもじ (emoji) and all the emoji pop up and you can choose between them. The downside of using the noob file is there are hundreds of emoji to choose from. Also, since I have not tried this noob file personally, it could crash your machine.
Directions:
Install the cab (knew that was coming, right?) and soft reset for good measure
Copy one of the text files to your device
Run the dicutility program
Hit ファイル (fairu or file) (it is the bottom-left button)
Choose テキストファイルから... (from text file...) (it is the top-most option)
Browse to the text file you copied over and hit okay.
Wait. My machine took quite a while to chew through all that.
When it finishes reset again just in case.
You should now be able to input softbank's emoji using the method detailed above.
It is kind of a pain in the ass. It would be cool if a superstar came along and make a sip dedicated to emoji where we just open it and choose.
And if that superstar's name was Asukal I wouldn't be surprised.

I did all this; it said "611 emoticons processed, 0 of 611 added." Hmm.
I thought maybe because the text is not Unicode (when I open on the PPC I got garbage). I resaved as Unicode and I could see now, but still could not import.
Oh, and btw, color fonts are not possible. that's why Softbank went and wrote that awful "Softbank Mail" program.

You can tell I'm not so experienced at this helping people thing.
A couple of things come to mind you might check.
First, that your machine might not have the japanese ime from ms, but instead some other ime (like Asukal's for example). Or for some other reason the folder where your Japanese ime files is in an odd place and the dictutility can't find it.
Second, that perhaps your region settings are set to English instead of Japanese. This sometimes prevents your machine from reading Japanese character sets. This may also explain why your machine couldn't read the text file as is.
Third, that you perhaps used the DicUtilityAdd instead of the DicUtility? Easy mistake - seems like Add would be what you want to do.
Anyway, check those three and try, try again. We'll get it sorted out.

Me too wish that Mr Asukal comes here and save the day, like he used to do!

I believe it was due to regional locale settings perhaps. They were set to "Canada" (so I can get the 24hour time but $ sign and other stuff the way I like it.) I have MS IME and used the DicUtility, not the Add utility.
I'll try again with "Japanese".

I found the files for doing everything here http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~bobby/x01ht_002.html
And I found the dicutility - which is a utility used for, well, just what we used it for: to make bulk changes to Japanese kanji transformation dictionaries - anyway I found that here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/naohashimoto/hanamaru_005.htm It is freeware. Hope it works out. You will find I believe that when the region set to Canada you will not be able to view Japanese in all cases - even if the fonts are installed. Some cases will require a switch over to unicode, as you have probably already discovered.
I have discovered that with an English rom and the region set to Japan that other little quirks develop - such calculator and HTweakC refusing to work. Give this a try if you have time so I can know if it is only my machine.

larsuck, when you have Asukal's "LetsJapan" installed in english ROM, it enables Japan region settings trought altering "wince.nls" file's location in registry. "LetsJapan" installs this file into \Temp directory. Real location of this file is into \Windows. Some software, like .net framework, looks for it directly in there, not in registry! This create a conflict because there are two different "wince.nls" files present.
Simplest solution is just to replace one in \Windows with Asukal's one, and reboot... It would be wise to backup original "wince.nls", in the case uninstall is needed.
HTweakC, PocketSudoku, some calculators, etc... are all .net applitacions and they produce problems...

I have tried several different radios. All have worked fine with Softbank system. The newer radios have a benefit of being able to see either "3G" or "H" icons. I had terrible battery life with 1.38. 1.40 , 1.41 seemed better but I still think 1.14 has best battery life although you can't see the H icons.

@larsuck:
Well, I tried few radios. So far 1.38 seems most stable on Softbank network (more stable than 1.14 or 1.16 or 1.27). Havent had time to check 1.40 & 1.41...
@khammo01:
Are you sure that 1.14 had best battery life? Maybe it depends of OS & radio combination too... How's 1.40 compared to 1.38?

Sometimes I have issues with MMSLite on WM6 Black 2.0. It happens every few days, completely freezes the phone upon message reception only (right at the moment connection is established)... Anybody experienced this so far? What MMSLite and OS versions are you people using?

I could practically watch the battery drain down when I tried 1.38. I was using Black 2.0. At the rate it was going down, the device would have been flat in 6 hours.
There are a few forum threads in which people discuss their battery life and signal performance and people seem to be saying opposite things. It is difficult to know for sure. Once I find an OS ROM I like, I'll mix around with the radio settings to see if any one is better than the other.
I used 1.41 through the weekend and it seemed to be OK. It might be my imagination, but with 1.40, I had issues with incoming calls going to voice mail even though the phone had a decent signal.

Seems to be OK now, thanks.
I set the locale to Japanese which fixes a few things but breaks some others. The most annoying is some applications ignore my overrides and display dates as 月火水 and 1月 2月 3月 instead of the Western calendar settings. (such as the built-in WM calendar).
Some less well-written apps also too big to fit on the screen; they seem to be using the Japanese system font.

My first flash was to Pro Black 2.0, and it was a fast mother. But I just ended up having too many problems with it. It seemed to crash directly after activesync, and also sometimes when I would get an sms while accessing a program which lacks taskbars (mortplayer for example).
Now I have settled down to LVSW Lite 0423 and it has been a solid piece of work so far, though a bit slower than Black. I haven't had ZERO problems, but much less than Black. I am still on Radio version 1.14 - and I don't have a problem with battery life or dropped calls at all, so flashing the radio seems lots of risk for little reward right now. If it would fix my activesync passthrough internet explorer problem then that would be another matter...

I also tried all the radios and am now back on 1.14. So hmm, I've just gone around the world and back again. Sounds to me like LSVW 0423 and Radio 1.14 might be the most stable combination for Softbank. Anyone else have any thoughts?
I started out with LSVW, was not impressed with speed or stability so went to Black 2.0. It was fast but not so stable. I tried all the other flavors since then, and especially liked Custel, but it had some stability issues as well. By coincidence I've just flashed LSVW Full 0423 (with the big storage but without the exe/dll compression) and so far it looks almost as stable as the old WM5.
Comparing the ROMs, I would guess that the ones that DON'T do exe/dll compression probably are more stable. It makes sense. Getting rid of big storage might also be more stable but that extra RAM is just too tempting.

MMSLite seems to install fine. Tap on the .cab, it installs and says that it has installed. But when try I to access it in the messaging application, there is no MMS account.

I always installed Japanese I/O using let's Japan5 and MSIME, plus the Softbank internet connections first. These two cabs worked on every previous WM6 ROM I tried except for the ROMs where SMS and MMS were together.

Bad news. I tried Let'sJapanNo6 but the results were the same. I checked the registry and the settings for MMSLite seemed to be okay, but the machine just doesn't recognize it.
Perhaps it has something to do with the new threaded SMS and the way emails are organized... I don't know. It is a shame because WM6.1 does seem to be faster than WM6. I can live without threaded text messages and a new PIE, but I have a feeling that the real benefits of 6.1 are speed and stability.
I guess the only thing to do is to contact the maker of MMSLite and see if he knows about this. I am going to start a thread dedicated to this now that I know it is a real problem.

EMOJI can only be seen in BnW? no color version yet?
AFAIK, the Messaging program in WM6 can't handle full HTML. Links to webpages remain intact in the message, but colored text is stripped out and put into an attachment.
At least, that is what happens to my HTML mail that I send.
However, maybe if someone changed the EUDC file that has the B/W emoji in it to color, then WM6 might be able to display color emoji. I believe the EUDC file that we are using was made before WM6 so there was no need to try to make a color version.
Changing the EUDC file sounds like a really long and difficult project though.
