Connecting xda with pc to send sms!!

hi! How can i connect my xda jasjar with my computer to send sms from the computer ? i have downloaded SMSCaster E Marketer but it works on com1, as i am a newbie i dont know how to open com1? do i need a special cable for com1 or can iuse usb?

I have already done it, but it says Port Opening " Time Out" . Do i need to make any changes in active sync? With usb wire, is it possible to communicate on port 1 or do i need a serial cable or any other cable?
