View Full Version : Crossbow?

So is it safe to assume, from all the posts that are disappearing about Crossbow's inhabitance of the Hermes & Mercury platforms, that we cannot yet expect to be able to upgrade (albeit unofficially) to Crossbow OS?

Sleuth255

rumors are the the hermes crossbow implementation floating around recently was incomplete. I'm still holding out hope that a version will surface somewhere. I'll be at MEDC in a few months. If there's a final version that runs on hermes, I'll see it there for sure.

If I recall correctly, the people who cooked the universal rom specifically had to add a cab to the rom to allow for their screen to work. That in theory means that the unmodified rom would work on the qvga screens.

afaik m$ built a rom for universal, so no cab, support was allready there. but yeah there are qvga roms out there :)

So in theory the next to benefit from that loophole is none other... than US!!! Yay!!! (NB: US doesn't mean "united states," it's "us" as in the noun "us")

if you want the device to work in realvga, yeah, than you need this special ozvga cab. but you always needed that, doesn't matter which OS or rom.
that has nothing to do that the universal rom could be qvga.

I'm sort of giving up on Crossbow or even AKU3x ROMS for the TyTN...I mean, older devices are getting these way before a newer device like the Hermes would, so why would we get it in the first place? I think I'm just going to wait for a device to come out that has Crossbow on it.

In a word NO!

Though I would I suspect a version for the Hermes may show up soon. I saw Crossbow for the Universal first, then the Wizard. As each week goes by the tech guys getting deeper into the inner workings of the Hermes. Fingers crossed by February we should see a lot activity concerning ROMS etc for the Hermes.

m$ is using the Hermes as their internal development platform. Don't lose hope! I'll hopefully have more on this in May after I return from MEDC.

Wasn't there a Wizard ROM that was once cracked to serve as WM5 on the BA? Couldn't we use the same processes (OMAP-emulation, driver replacement, etc.) To get one of those ROMs working on our Hermes units?

A picture is worth a 1000 words,

So its out and now all it needs to do is leak onto the net as we seem to get into trouble each time a WM5 or WM6 finds its way onto XDA-Developers.

Good point MDAIIIUser.

@all: Just to clarify MDAIIIUser's point: we've been instructed by our mysterious admin leaders that we're to take down Crossbow ROM files posted here if we find them as M$ will get very belligerent with us in short order if we don't. :(

When WM6 is officially released on an HTC device, we'll be able to work on a port for sure. Again, I hope to find out (much) more about WM6 and its targeted devices in May.

Typically on XDA-developers, you'll see new versions of Windows Mobile ported over to older devices within a month or so of their official release. Crossbow seems a bit different in this respect in that Universal and Wizard builds already exist in the wild. The wraps do seem to be a bit tighter on the Hermes build though.

However, if you look at the respective Universal and Wizard WM6 threads, you'll see that their initial release was very much incomplete; for instance, the original Wizard ROM didn't even have a camera application. There's been a lot of work done here and elsewhere to make those ROMs usable (kudos to all the WM6 ROM cookers :D) and this is all based on the simple fact that ROM cooking on the Wizard and Universal is a well known process with a rich toolset to work with.

While the same "incomplete" WM6 build has been seen in the wild for Hermes devices, it isn't "cookable" because Hermes ROM cooking isn't quite possible yet. Very likely this is why we haven't seen anything here. Perhaps this is a good thing because the Hermes WM6 ROM that does get released will be much more complete and very likely better optimized for the hermes platform itself.

This is because it seems that most people only cares about how tasty the fruit is but don't care about planting the trees... it is a bit disappointed that no one cares about ROM editing.. :(

I wouldn't be so depressed. Folks like pof and most recently tadzio have made huge advances here. We are very close to cooking... just a few issues with adding files.

Then, the only hurdle that remains will be how to make a nice RUU type installer. But before that, we'll be able to offer os.nb versions that can easily and quickly be flashed with the 1.01MFG bootloader.

That being said, the source for mamaich's tools (which form the basis to all cooked ROMS) is available for those of us who want to mess around. Several good threads exist here as well and I encourage everybody who can work with low level tools to read and participate! Here's the two most relevant threads:

New Custom Roms (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289377) ... now closed but a great source of information on recent breakthroughs

ROM Cooking and Bootloader 1.01 MFG (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290206) ... current development track. Post all findings here.
