Its doubtful.. Right now at this time its only the business customer side of cingular that has changed their name to ATT. The residential customer side is still cingular and has not changed branding yet, they are still crying about the amount of money its going to take to re-brand..

Awesome news, but...Im wondering something. What benefits do you get with a 3.X AKU compared to our 2.X AKU right now?

mxlaser
15th January 2007, 02:10 PM
Faster response
More stability
WPA2 wifi support
new BT stacks

and a few more things. Comparing the jump from AKU2.3 to AKU3.5 from the Mio, applications and the PDA itself where MUCH faster. it was easily visable.

Theres other things too, but the speed, stability and also bug fixing makes it worthwile. for me though, WPA2 is a MASSIVE thing as every network i access now incorporates it, and i cant use wifi in these places now.

They are starting to rebrand today.

AT&T Begins Rebranding Cingular Wireless (http://www.teleclick.ca/2007/01/att-begins-rebranding-cingular-wireless/)

Saw some ATT/Cingular commercials yesterday.

Either way I don't care...just give me some new fw.

I just read on www.pocketinfo.nl (http://www.pocketinfo.nl/artikel/7226/htc-tytn-krijgt-aku3-update-en-crossbow-update-lekt-uit.html) an article in Dutch mentioning the outcoming of the new official rom with aku3 at the end of january.
The article:

The HTC TyTN, also known as the HTC Hermes, is getting a rom-update to AKU3. HTC Europe will provide the update on the support section of the european HTC website from the end of january. Besides the extra features of AKU3 it should also fix the known problems with the HTC TyTN. Good news, except for people who bought a TyTN-variant from their operator, like T-Mobile. It's still uncertain if the update will be available for these models. They can however install the official HTC ROM-update, but will lose their waranty in the process.

Friends, don´t get too exited. One website quotes the other, and so on...there is no official news on the content of any future ROM update. And HTC is not interested in providing AKU updates unless serious problems can be solved. Learn from HTC experience... :-) Remember HTC has to pay license fees on a per-machine-basis...

My guess is that the WWE version (generic US English version for use in "any" country) will come first, then the regional and language variants that likely have to be certified by the local carriers that sell and support the phone in each country will follow.

Maybe I should let someone more experienced such as pof or sleuth255 answer, but this is my take on how HTC releases updates. HTC will create a downloadable file that has "WWE" in the name, such as "RUU_Hermes_1.35.255.2_1.35.255.102_1.08.00.10_HTC_ WWE_Ship.zip". "WWE" stands for "World Wide English". ("RUU" is "ROM Update Utility".) The "WWE" is a "generic" version of the firmware that does not contain any specific carrier customizations or languages other than US English (I believe) and in theory should work with any GSM carrier, but you will have to create your own GPRS connections, etc.

Then HTC will create regional and language variants for each of the carriers that purchase equipment from them. From what I can tell, these customizations are usually added as CABs in the Extended_ROM and these load after a hard reset. However, the version numbers for these variations rarely match the parent "WWE" version, so you never know if 1.35_WWE is older or newer than say, Cingular's 1.20 (I'm using hypothetical examples to prove my point).

Now comes the tricky part. These downloads are generally difficult to find. They are not posted "willy nilly" to web sites or if they are, they hidden deep in the support sections. The best place to find them is actually the xda-developers' FTP site.

For what it is worth, on the Belgian site (http://www.smart-phones.be , registration required to see the downloads), there currently is a file with the following information (to find it, I needed to enter my IMEI code):
* Device type: HTC TyTN
* Language: en
Download ROM software (HER_QTEK_1182553_106_10303_WWE_SHIP.exe)

It might help in determining the name of the updated file.

While this still is the old file (it is the version on my TyTN), I'm keeping an eye on this site as well. :)

i just gave HTC Europe a call today (Tel Support Line - Belgium) needed to ask another thing so i thought i might just ask about the rom update too, so they confirmed that there is an official rom update to be released in Q1 of 07 and that when its released it will be hosted on HTC website and in order to download the rom users will need to use IMEI number of there HTC TyTn phone...

I also asked about crossbow and they told me that they cant say much until its released...

I was recently in England and I called the UK number to get something repaired on my TyTN.

At the service center I spoke with a really helpful HTC employee who said that no decision had been made yet if HTC is going to release Crossbow for the TyTN or not. However, he did say that the last time he had contact with the people who make that kind of decision they were leaning to releasing Crossbow for the Hermes as it is a test platform for it.

Hope that helps,

WM6 (crossbow) is based on WinCE 5.x as was WM5. The first iteration of Windows mobile based on WinCE 6 will be Photon, tentatively scheduled for 2008.

WinCE is the embedded OS kernel that forms the basis of a number of "smart" devices. Windows Mobile is a "shell" around this kernel that is used to power smartphones and PDAs

all very confusing IMO....

Similar to how Nokia and Sony Ericsson both are running the Symbian OS on their smartphones, but each vendor have their own UI. Nokia have Series 60, 80 and 90, I think, while Sony Ericsson currently have UIQ 2.1 and 3. (There's one Nokia phone that also runs UIQ 2.1; the 6708. But that's just a Nokia-branded Benq P31.)

@perlmane:

It's regionally dependent based on what operator you are using, whether you have direct push etc.... Plus there are personal preferences, the type of keyboard your device has, and whether you have UMTS in your area or not.

See now why I said what I did? There is no one good answer. Even making a matrix is impossible due to the myriads of changing info.

Updates are made available via your operator's web-site. You will need to visit their site to find the latest version
its not very helpfull if you own a HTC TyTN and not an O2/T-mobile/vodaphone (et all) branded Hermes device.

I got this reply:

In response to your query, The ROM update for the Tytn handset is not available. It will be released during the month of March

Please don't hesitate to contact us back if this doesn't solve your query

Kind regards

But it then got an email stating Q1 2007 about 2 minutes later?!?!

Hopefully we will get a new ROM soon. But im personally looking forward to some cooked ROM-age and maybe a possibility the geniuses here can crack open GPS on the Hermes too (fingers crossed!!!:))

Q1 2007 = January, February, March

So it is not contradictory to their first response. Most sources talk of it coming out in the first quarter (Q1), which probabely will mean March. :D

Yer i realise that!! (rolls eyes!) But i figured it was a tad strange since the original email responce was from a named address (not the standard helpdesk@htc address)
So the guy whos sent saying March has probably been told otherwise and had to send another email?? In all i got three emails all changing what they said!

If the persons who already have the new ROM for Hermes will put it here they will loose their jobs.

In our russian forum we have a person who have a new Russian localiazed ROM with ACU 3 on his device. But he can't give it to other guys because hi is working in HTC general distributor in Russia.
As he said localiazed version of ROM is on testing at distributor company.

Yeah I meant a proper, officially released, upgrade.

In my experience, dumped ROMs that appear before the official releases are never quite as stable as they should be. And as I'm using my Hermes as my main phone, I need the stability.

My poor Universal, however, is having to put up with all sorts of experiments at the moment...

Some advice for the people trying to flash it when it is in the upload!

Don't!! Because most probably the radiobootloader is 1.0108 which means you can't downgrade the radio anymore, or install the GPS enabled radio, who knows, it might just work with the AKU 3.3 rom.

Instead, extract the exe, you will then get the *.NBH file! ( I use Total commander for this )

Then use NBHExtract to extract all the rom parts (OS and external) *.NB files.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289830&highlight=nbhextract

And use the 1.01 MFG bootloader and MTTY.exe to flash the OS and external rom. This way you can still flash any radiorom you want.

If someone then confirms it has the older radio bootloader you can allways flash the whole rom. But untill then I would do it this way!

piopawlu
4th February 2007, 09:10 PM
Thanks for your advice, I would probably flash the whole rom if not you :-) Anyway, I hope there will actually be something to flash tomorrow, though I don't want to be the very first to upgrade as I already have some bad experience with recovering my old pda :/

For the filename it seems that the 1.34 radio has HTC_BOOT 108, so follow trion's advice and don't flash the full rom, just the OS/ExtROM parts using 1.01 MFG.

Plz upload ASAP! I am so fed up with my TyTN and his bugs that I was going to get me a new phone tomorrow.

Reading that a new ROM might be released soon gives me some hope not to get another phone!

I really love WM phones as long as they run stable, with my Wizard I never had any issues because there where some great ROMs available, which clearly is a real let down if you get a TyTN, which so supposed should be the greatest smart phone out there....

You may need to make your device SuperCID first to avoid an ID error. However, the worst that can happen is that the upgrade file refuses to install, so there's no danger in just trying. As you said, just double-click the executable file.

Seems good. Has all the usual things that AKU3.3 brings, for me, WPA2 support is a good one.

Push email seems slightly faster to me, as does syncing in Vista as well.. not sure what that is.

Phone is stable, BT works fine, Wifi seems to pick up and connect quicker. The rom has an app that enables X in the OS to close so no need for apps like PocketPlus or tMan.

Anything else anyone wants to know?

Seems fast, responsive and stable from preliminary play with it.

Flashing OS back to 1.35 rom now though, as need english! :)

I am Swedish but anyway did the hard way of upgrading using NBhextract and MTTY and have upgraded my OS and Ext tom. But how do I install the new radio. I have it extracted as gsm.nb

Ia looked in the Wiki and there are only instructions for OS and Ext rom and splash in the HERMES Bootloader 1.01 MFG part.

Can I just write

USB> task 32
USB> task 28
USB> lnb gsm.nb
USB> task 28
USB> task 8

or should I write something like this

USB> task 32
USB> lnb gsm.nb XXXXXXX adress ?
USB> task 8

I have SPL 1.04 installed now - should I go back 1.01 ?

@easycure1974: The point of doing it this way is to not install the radio on this rom, as it contains HTC_BOOT 0108 which will prevent downgrading of itself, and will make impossible to flash extracted radios in NBF format. Also, you will not be able to use trinity GPS enabled radios if you flash this radio.

@easycure1974: You'll need to have 1.01MFG flashed to be able to flash the OS or other parts.

I wouldnt do the radio. The OS worked fine from intial testing with the 1.27GER radio flashed.

Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum as "member" although I'm following it since back in my XDA II times... It's always great to come here and see all the things one can do with those HTC devices :-) Keep up the good work!

The thing that made me register is that I'm waiting for my Hermes doing WPA-AES for a long time. My WLan-Router (Belkin Pre-N) always looses the connections with WPA-TKIP. Could anyone please test with this ROM if AES works?

In that case I would even learn some swedish - until a solution has been found to get it at least english...

Thanks so much,

So far so good, and my Swedish is improving alot!

Some things I have noticed so far:
- Data Connection Icon: I have seen the 'E' icon, the 'U' icon, a new '3G' icon and a new 'H' icon depending on the mobile network.
- Bluetooth profiles have changed to: OBEX, Network Access Point, and Voice Gateway, things like DUN are no longer available. There is also a Internet Sharing app installed that you can use with the Network Access Point.

Ah and did I already mention that this ROM is fast!!!!!

it had 320x240 @ 25fps
Original Datarate: 500kbit/s
44100khz stereo sound.

and it is in the mp4-format (ipod style i believe)
so if coreplayer peoples get to work a little more with their ati implementation it will be perfect i assume.

Come on guys! Even as a "rookie", I know that HTC puts the langauge in the file name. What do you think "SVE" and "WWE" stand for? Since this is a pre-release "demo" version, it is likely stripped of full language support so that guys like jsp_m don't do what he (she?) did, that is, to give it to the world. You need to think like HTC, they don't want to support a whole world full of a pre-release. (I can't believe I just wrote that, they don't provide support, period. What would they care!)

OK, no flames please. I am just stating the obvious. I guess we'll all just have to be a little more patient and wait for the "official" release. I am guessing Feb 14 when M$ makes their "big" WM6 announcement at 3GSM.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1109289&postcount=204

I have tried this - and it actually works. Everything gets translated to english with a few issues:

- The messaging inbox can't be found. It's probably because of a name mismatch. Maybe installing an english extended roms solves this.

- Some today items got doubled (but can easily be deactivated). E.g Messaging (meddelandefunktion), Owner Info (Ägareinformation).

- In personal settings, the settings for Voice dialing is still named "Röstuppringing" and is still in swedish.

Other than that it works good. The popup-internal keyboard is now in English but the hardware keyboard is still in swedish. That could proably be fixed following the steps in the wiki.

I havn't looked at everyting, so there might be some swedish hidden elsewhere.... :)

But as I'm swedish I'm returning to my backup with a working inbox....

Yes, at least I had no problem installing it. I have however found some other things:

- Some shortcuts have vanished from the program folder, "Internetdelning" (Internet sharing), Streaming Media etc. The programs should still be there though.

- In the program folder a shortcut was added to Wireless modem, but is not working because the program is not available after the upgrade. I guess it's the Internet Sharing program now.

As I wrote before - there could be other things in Swedish or things not working becuase of language differencies. The inbox was my biggest concern.
