Ever since I unlocked my 8525 with a code provided by a remote imei unlocker, no one can hear my voice when I place or recive calls. I've tried both a cingular sim, and t-mobile sim, neither has any affect, and they work perfectly in other phones. used a remote imei unlock because I thought that you couldn't downgrade from the 1.09 bootloader which I had, but I found out you could, so i downgraded it and I made it supercid, but it didn't seem to have any affect since the phone was already sim unlocked
I only want to do this to see if the sim unlock is the reason why my voice cannot be heard (the headset doesn't make a difference either), or if it is a hardware problem and then go about looking for a place that can repair it. Is it the microphone for calls the same as recording notes?, because I can voice record notes just fine.
I also seem to get "no service" alot even though before I unlocked it i got perfect coverage and I've tried three different radios and neither one made a difference.

Hmm... Please post your Device Details so that we can see what you versions of the ROM, RADIO you have and be able to point you to the right direction. PPL here are great in helping you solve your problems but you have to post what versions of the ROMS, OS versions etc you have.

First of all, You did not have to pay to get the 8525 Unlocked. There are unlockers here for Free. Hmm..
Did you try going to this ROM for 8525 i.e "1.30.502.1"

I payed because I upgraded to the latest rom, with bootloader 1.09, and I thought it was impossible to downgrade it to be able to run the unlock program. I went on ebay, and gave some guy my imei number and he gave me an unlock code that worked. 2 days after this, i found out that it was possible to downgrade from the 1.09 bootloader with an kinda "illegal program" and I succesfully downgraded.

a. relocking it will not fix your voice problem, has nothing to do with it
b. hard reset and see if it fixes it, it might be a software problem
c. if hard reset does not fix it, take it to the repair centre
d. awizard will not work on hermes

I did a hard reset, and it didn't make a difference, its not a software problem. Where would I find a repair center in the North Eastern part of the US, and is the microphone for the voice recorder and phone different?

Where exactly is the voice mic located on the 8525 (maybe I can open it up and see if it got disconnected), and if a headset violently came of the usb port could that have caused my problem?

Ok, I did some more experimentation. If I put my mouth directly on to the bottom of my 8525 and blew into it or spoke loudly, i could faintly be heard. Anyone have any suggestions? Like I said before recording in notes work perfectly, and also sound is present on videos that I record. I bought this on ebay in november and was working perfectly. It started acting up this month either after I sim unlocked it or, or after the headset got violently ripped out (both happened on the same day) Also there seems to be a "crack" in the center of the bottom metal part of the USB port. im not sure if thats supposed to be there because on the cable there seems to be a "crack" in the same exact place

i just found another problem, when i have no service and i attempt to turn off the radio from the comm manager, it just turns right back on. Has this happened to anyone else?

ok, ive come to the conclusion that the problem has nothing to do with the software, sim or the phone being locked. How do you change the title of the thread, i want to change to micropone problems

I will try to remember and post a picture of it tonight. (few hours).
EDIT: In the meantime on the wiki pictures find motherboard side 2. On right hand side is a black rubber part which covers the microphone. On the assembled device it has a hole near the soft reset hole. If I get a picture later it will be with rubber cover removed.
The above basic motherboard picture is also here:

thanks, earlier this morning, i dissasembled it, but stopped short because i could not remove the main board, i didn't know what was holding it and I didn't want to force it. Right now im using an old bluetooth headset that i had lying around. I am so confused about what the problem could be because the bluetooth headset works fine, but the wired one doesnt (I can still use them as headphones) and the mic, which works for other programs (well the built in notes program is the only one i tested) but not for calls
A side note (question) is it unusual for the device to not allow the phone module to turn off (through comm manager) when it has no service, and to not stay off when it has no service (keeps turning on after it turn it off when it says it has no service)? This requires a softreset to fix

I have just read through all the posts here.
There is only one microphone so if it works for notes then it's ok. It's just possible the ripping out of the headset has caused a crack in the board for the phone side of things but not damaged the mic. (i'm a little skeptical though).
At work so will reply in more detail later.
And lets hear from others who have a problem with the person being phoned not hearing what's being said.

I got a reply from Pocket Pc Techs, I emailed them earlier asking if they could repair my pda, and they said that they "Unfortunately we do not yet offer any repairs for the Cingular 8525." Think I could fix it myself?

Cannot answer that. As the mic is working for the recording functions then there is not a microphone fault. Also the mic is soldered directly to the main board so connection / cabling problems are ruled out. There may be a hairline crack on the boaed at some point but you'll be hard pushed to find anything without basic test equipment.
The Hermes is not the easiest to test when the back casing is removed as you need a way to keep the battery connected, something the case does in normal use.
You could go for the take it apart check the multi connectors (there's two) by unpluging reinserting and re-assembling - this involves no testing no "real" changes but can in a rather unscientific way sometimes sort basic problems related to a poor contact or connection.
Before doing this I would do at least a couple of full hard resets, and make a test call. If I had a warranty I would return the device.
If you fancy opening it up again to remove and reinsert the main board then look here:

I did three hard resets and there wasnt any difference, i have already opened it voiding the warranty, and what are the multi connectors that you are talking about?

Ok - it certainly sounds like a hardware issue.
The connectors I referred to are shown in the Japanese site and on mine and onthe wiki site here.
referring to the Japanese site:
http://inuchanbt.blog54.fc2.com/blog-entry-100.html (http://inuchanbt.blog54.fc2.com/blog-entry-100.html)
1st Multiconnector
3rd picture down (inc, pic with scredriver)
item 2 Purple circled connector
(careful with this one. prize it up gently it will come up with not much pressure. Too much rough handling and its metal cover part will unglue itself. Can be re-glued if needed.)
and
2nd Multi Connector
4th, 5th, 6th pictures show 2nd mylar multi connector
Trickier and fiddlier than first. This one has a piece of tape holding it in place, although it does insert fairly firmly into the female connector.
For your purposes there is no need to go any further than this. Simply!! reconnect everything and fingers crossed any loose connection will be fixed and problem solved.
Keep in mind a couple of things:
1. There is a chance this checking of connections will work but probably a higher chance it won't,
2. There are a couple of fiddly little things to remember when re-assembling everything. (black rubber mic cover / camera toggle arm - for a little more info see my website under loose keyboard slider - link below)

Thanks for the instructions, but they didn't change anything, I am lost at what I should do now, i guess i'll have to stick with the bluetooth headset because i cannot find anyplace in the US that repairs the HTC Hermes, and im kinda broke right now so i probably wouldnt be able to pay for the repair. What exactly would i need, a new board?

What a downer, still worth a try as you possibly will need a new board, it's almost impossible to find true electronic repair shops nowadays as it costs too much in labor/time to repair a board compaired with replacement.

Now that I have accepted my fate, I was wondering if there was anyway that I could answer a call using a bluetooth headset without the screen turning on? I don't get unwanted calls very often so, I don't need to see whose calling

....ok, I havent accepted my fate, I am going to open up the 8525 again and remove the rubber cover, thats covering the microphone and see what happens, I recall that I i put my mouth on the mic hole and yell it picks up my voice, also i could stab at it with with the torx screwdriver, since im already using a BT headset and don't use the voice recorder, but maybe i'll put that option off

I am having the same microphone problem that you posted about. The other party can hear a scratchy sound if I blow on the microphone, but no voice. Cingular is sending me a new 8525. Were you able to fix it yourself?

I'm getting the same problem. Did anyone find a fix to this?
Voice dial works perfectly and records names perfectly. If I tap and blow into the microphone it eventually works for a while. it's like the volume gets turned down, and needs encouraging up. I've turned AGC off to no avail. Any ideas?

If voicedial works then your microphone is clearly working.
But you're right in trying the AGC and I feel that is where the fault is. Have you tried a hard reset yet?
