View Full Version : Midget v0.1 Vanilla Crossbow Rom (Based on Helmi's Unreleased Rom)
Midget_1990
15th January 2007, 06:22 PM
Unknown to me, the 'clean' source i was given to make this ROM was actually heavily customized already to fix some major bugs and flaws by Helmi_C. He deserves the main credit for this ROM, but i will continue to keep it up to date :) - no hard feelings?
Hi, as you may know I've been here (xda-developers) for quite a while, In this time i have been learning the art form that is rom building, my teachers (at least i think of it like that ;) include maimach (How can he be human?), Tuatara (God of all things WM5 on BA), Lt.Cmdr.Ivan, Helmi_c and many others (thanks everyone, sorry if i didnt mention you)
Finally in December 2006 i had a chance to use this knowledge i have gathered when i acquired a pre-release version of WM6 from a good friend (you know who you are ;) ) Since then i've spent days tweaking and fixing bugs in this rom, i wanted to wait until it was perfect to release, but due to recent event s i think now would be the best time, so i present you with My first ROM for Universal and my First Crossbow rom...
Current State of things:
Bugs:
Video Calling doesn't work (im working on this - thanks bepe)
In REALvga mode (addon cab) if you have owner information or password set to display on boot then you will hang your device, hard reset needed. im stuck as to what is causing this, anyone got any ideas?
Occasionally after flashing the phone will reset into bootloader - not load OS. a quick "set 14 0" in mtty fixes this (again anyone got any ideas?)
Features:
Version 5.2.318 (Build 15341.0.0.0)
Most Stable Crossbow rom for universal (verified by two beta testers who have tried them all)
Free Storage 40mb
Free RAM 30mb
Cache Tweaks for Performance
New Comm Manager hacked for speed and look (WM6 Background)
No Bloat
Coming soon:
Video Call Drivers
AKU 0.1
Well i've rambled on too long here ill give you the links :)

Extended Rom is seen as a drive and Outlook use it to store mail attachment (impossible to change the storage used) For other office program you can use SD CARD.
And it's impossible to hide Extended Rom :(
So I use an empty extended Rom

I am in love.
My Jabra 8010 plays with no dead air, up to 10 feet away..
(bonded my BT and Radio antennas with a peice of metal and solder) I tried it with 3.5 and got a little better.. It only cut out about once every min if it was 3 feet away. Now with this ROM, 10 fricken feet away, it cut out about every min!!!!!!!! Same radio ROM.. Must have a much better BT stack.
Also, MW was playing slow on songs on 3.5, now it is fine.
Fast, sweet, neat, sexy.
Good job MS, great job to the smarter people here.

Hi Midget/other veterans...
I notice Bootloader 2.01 in Midget's footer - where is it possible to get it from OR does it get upgraded on flashing the Crossbow ROM itself?
Also, does this ROM include the Radio 1.14.10 or should I upgrade the radio first and then go for flashing the crossbow?
thanks in advance for any response to the apparently noob questions!

Everything works great :-)
Except for Skype Beta, when installed on SD, rebooting device, causes it to hang at Pin Screen.
It did work on AKU 2.3/3.2/3.3
When it does run sometime, your device does not wakeup from standby anymore..

well installed this, one problem, unrelated, last night my bloody reset button broke! i dont feel it click in anymore, now whenever i soft reset from any programme etc it wont reboot, have to take battey out! any ideas if this can be fixed??
running tomtom 5, one error but ok since.
i seem to have problems from a soft reset whilst plugged into laptop, ie activesync connecting, it hangs. reboot without it plugged in it works, then plug it in to activesync it works.
got a feeling resco today plug in causes it to freeze?
ill retry later, cant be arsed at mo as have to take battery out when it does now :(
everything else seems ok.
no wifi off from the bubble at top.
really like the improved internet explorer, the high res mode together with fit to screen is better! also it seems to load an awful lot quicker (loaded avforums main forum page in about 4 seconds on wifi, usually takes about 30-40 seconds)
erm the backlight running on ligh sensor only bugs me, whats the reg fix to disable the sensor?
ill give it a few days with this, may go back to a windows 5 for short term, see how stable this begins to become, the problems i migh be having may be made worse by my broken reset button? which im assuming is stuck in the depressed position

Hi Everyone, thanks for all the great work, and help that is given to memebers of this comunity. and i hope you all hav the most wonderful 2007.
I currently have bootloader version 1 and need to upgrade to version 2.1 for this rom to work,
my question is as follows, How exactly do i upgrade my bootloader to version 2.0 and can somene please post me a linkl and instructions to the files required to perform the upgrade,
secondly can you upgrade from 1.0 straight to 2.1 or do you need to upgrade to 1.1 first
thirdly, I flashed this rom without performing the bootloader upgrade , so am now currently stuck in the bootloader screen, should i flash an older rom, before trying to upgrade my bootloader or is it safe to simply upgrade my bootloader from were I am,
thanks in advance for your efforts
kind regards

I just have one question, about the memory. After the flashing and first reset I have about 26-27 MB RAM. And after installing Midgets extra hacks its only about 19-22 MB after soft reset. And thats without any extra apps at all

...the problems i migh be having may be made worse by my broken reset button? which im assuming is stuck in the depressed position
Well, if you take the battery out and hold down both softkeys while you put the battery back in and turn it on, you'll find out if the reset button is stuck, 'cause it'll ask you if you want to hard reset the phone. Generally it shouldn't cause any real problems if the button is stuck though.
That happened to my wife's Magician after she dropped it in a sink full of water (!) It worked without any real problems, but the problem with the Magician is that a hard reset is automatically performed by holding reset and pressing the power button, so everytime she pressed the power button, the phone was wiped. In the end I just opened it up and pulled the reset button off the circuitboard. She has to use software to reset the thing now... (But it has gained it's own unique character, and it survived it's "wash" otherwise intact - it's still going strong about 12 months later)

YOU DO NOT NEED HIGHER THAN BOOTLOADER 1.01, I ONLY HAVE 2.01 BECAUSE I HAVE A NEW UNIVERSAL.
if you are stuck in bootloader (i did say this in first post) then run command "set 14 0" from mtty (look in wiki for info)
activesync 4.5 (beta) is needed for WM6

i managed to sort my problems out
if you are stuck in the bootloader that is because you are using bootloader version 1.0 you need to upgrade to 1.1
you do not need to flash again
all i did is whilst my devise was still stuck in bootloader mode is i ran on my pc the 1.1 upgrade executable that you can find in the bootloader upgrades folder on the ftp site.
onse the new bootloader is succesfully installed, and you soft reset, your universal will boot up proparly into the new rom

There is no MMS compatibility included in this ROM also. Some news according this topic?

just flashed this on - and with my limited playing (and knowledge) here's the bugs that I've seen:
No WiFi Off when using the top 'bar' to control WiFi. (I usually tap the 'G' then WiFi On / WiFi Off. On is OK, but it always stays at WiFi On). I hate using that CommMgr thing......
Camera doesn't lauch from the Camera button, although the app works OK from the Program group?
Also, not a bug, but interested in the 'Internet Calling' functionality. I assume this is a SIP client? but I can't seem to access/find any config for it.....
Is 'Voice Command' normally included in Crossbow....?
Falk
16th January 2007, 02:43 PM
I have read that "Crossbow" would (finally!) support the SIP protocol natively and since that would be the one main reason for me to switch my question is: Can I already use my VoIP provider without the need for any 3rd party apps?

Try the normal one first, if you get the Country Code error, copy the files from the folder over the normal once and use this updater.
It will also run into this error. When this appears simply exit the app and start it again. Thats is, welcome to Crossbow

Installed activesync 4.5 beta and it corrupted the tcp/ip stack on my nic - had to reboot into safemode, uninstall tcp/ip, reboot, then re-install tcp/ip.
Guy's be wary of this - if it's your work PC then wait till you get home to resync your contacts after updating to this ROM.

Er...I beg to differ. I've had it working via WiFi on WM5 and WM6.
I was chatting to my sister just last night, using Midget's ROM, and my SIM card was in my Tornado at the time, so I was definitely using WiFi on my Universal!
Actually, I hadn't put my SIM card in my Universal at all since flashing to Midget's ROM, so all the setting up of Windows Live was done via WiFi too - perhaps that made a difference? (Though I can't think why it would).

If GPRS is present, it will use that because it is more secure, and connectivity is more stable.
If no GPRS is present, then it will fall back to WiFi.
If you create a blank ISP in your connection settings, and select this, it will not have a connection to make, and will use WiFi.
It just means you have to switch between the two yourself if you definately need to use WiFi.

"a quick "set 14 0" in mtty fixes this (again anyone got any ideas?)"
dear midget
may i ask what does that mean?
from the wiki:
First download the mtty utility (http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=9864)
1. Take out the SD and SIM cards
2. Opened ActiveSync and go to file, connection setting and Un-check "Allow USB Connections". Then press Ok and close ActiveSync
3. Put in bootloader mode (Power + Light + reset) which brings up the "un-backlit" screen with "Serial" at the top and v0.XX at the bottom
4. Plug in USB cable DIRECTLY from PC to Jasjar (MAKE SURE NOT TO USE A USB HUB)
5. Open mtty utility / software
6. Select USB from the "Port" drop-down on the upper left corner of the dialog box and hit OK
7. Then another screen will come up. Hit enter and that will show "USB>"
8. Type "set 14 0" and hit enter
9. Disconnect Device and soft reset
10. Re-enable USB connections in activesync
How to update bootloader to 1.01:

Well on the whole a good release.
I like the look and general stability of the ROM but have a few issues with it.
1: I have a Media issue which I have highlited here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1103708#post1103708
2: Internet connections, all methods, can be a little tempremental. Although it was trying to access this site and I think this is being a little slow at the moment.
3: Random lockups immediately after a soft reset (1 in 10 or so) discovered when trying to fix the media problem.
4: Had to disable all the startup items in \Windows\Startup as they are swallowing all the available RAM.
Other than these things, can't fault it. The phone works well. Messaging and e-mail are good which I really like the start page, haven't tried the MMS yet but I never use it anyway. :D
Haven't tried Tomtom yet but that seems to work with everything I've thrown it at.
Well, keep up the good work everyone.
Cheers,
Pug.

Hi Midget,
A whole lot of thanks for this ROM, its one of the best, wating for the second release where video call and smart dialing will be enable.
Midget hope you can include this function on your next release namely:
1. Sim Manager
2. The button next to camera lost it function Press and Hold like where in WM5 when you press it voice command will trigger but when you press and hold it recording notes will be trigger.
3. Video Call Function - i miss this function
4. USB HDD functionality
5. Can you include the updated camera software version 3
5. Some sounds are missing like when you are clicking the Start menu, all is silent, not like in WM5 you can hear a pop-up sound. (im not talking about the screen tap sound found in sounds @ notification)
6. I noticed some difference in the Interface of the STK Service, i think helmi_c STK Service software is the updated one. can you include this on your next release
7. Can you remove Voice speed Dial or can you make it to a cab file because Voice Command is already intalled in WM6.
8. Can you remove the clearvuepdf because pocketcpdf is much powerful and its free.
8. Lastly what are the included tweakes in you hack and tweaks cab file, because when i installed it evrything is fine but when i remove it suddenly my exec always locks up resulting were i have no choice but to hard reset it.
Aside from this your WM6 Crossbow is perfect, From UMTS to GPRS,MMS to SMS, Remote Desktop to WIFI evrything is brilliant, Take my word from it. Midget has done a big leap were it changes the way we look at our Universal.
Again Thank you so much Midget.

There is 1 ROM that 3 seperate people have released updates of with different applications added or removed.
They are all the same base version though.

any solution for that??

Yes you can, just modify using a registry editor like Resco. Go to hk_local_machine/software/oem/qwerty
Here you modify layout. for German keyboard is 66567

Great ROM few questions:
1) Anyone got a task manager - pref the O2 one?
2) would like to have control back over keyboard light as sensor is just poor
3) anyone know how to assign running programs to one of the 4 buttons?
In answer to other issues - using this ROM will not stop me getting/upgrading to other phone if and when a Universal 2 is released and if M$ wanted to try and expand there market and providing the price was right I would purchase a fully supported version on WM6 - or whatever they wanted to call it.
I will go on to say that - if O2 and maybe some other operators pulled there thumbs out of there arses and released regular updates and provided proper custoemr service and product support for existing customers I would not be using / testing other ROMs.
Corporate Companies can take some blame for early and unoffical releases.

That program allows you to upgrade without the error.
What is the problem you're having? I am sure if you read the wiki and follow the steps how to upgrade, and what to do in the event of problems, you will be able to do this yourself, and learn all about it :)

I did also noticed problems with an ocasional freezing on a reboot, and somehow the amount of memory I get after rstart, is also like 22-25 mb. that is annoying ofcourse, byt the most annoying thing is the syncronisation with Vista RTM is a nightmare.
Everything seems to sync ok, untill it gets to Calendar. it keeps on giving the "Attention Required " message. The reason seems to be sme of my Reaccuring Events, like Birthdays, or anniversaries. It says it cannot synchronise the appointment due to insufficient memmory.
some kind of nonsense. I have never had it before. the problem could also be that I have replaced the original PIM.vol with the backed up one from before the flash to WM6. will try to hard reset, and sync with an empty PIM.vol tonight, will see what happen.

2. use resco explorer to copy all files to windows folder and replace old files
install TdyFix.PPC3_ARM.CAB to fix today items

I dont know if i'm the only one experiencing this, or everyone else is and is sucking it up....... -
Dont you guys think that crossbow roms are terribly sluggish and frustrating to use???? For example, open one of your mailboxes, click on "Menu" -> "Tools" (this basically draws the popup menu over your bottom softkey bar) and click outside.....It takes an HOUR to redraw the bottom softkeys, and then the chosen input sip, and then yea clear up the menu which was on top of the messages being displayed.... this is like a SLOOOWWWWWW step by step clean up It reminds me of those days where there was no double buffered displays and 5 MHz processors!
I think the main slow down happens when there is anything to do with the softkeys or top bar....takes too long to redraw them :(

Ok, my first findings with the new Rom, thanks again Midget it's beautiful! ;)
Installed a view of my apps:
Pocket Informant,
SK Tools,
CodeWallet,
Coolcamera with webcamera Plus,
Resco, Photo viewer and Explorer,
PocketMechanic,
PocketMusic,
HandyMenu,
ListPro.
Don't know if it causes that I use apss like PocketMechanic and SK Tools, but I've found the following bugs.
Maybe somebody can confirm this, because I could be wrong of course?
1. Can't change the today screen,
2. Can't find the buttonlock function,
3. And there is something wrong with startup after softreset,
sometimes the OS hangs and you have to push the softreset button again and hope it startsup right! (I'm not using passwords)
What I like a lot as well is that in Start/Settings/Remove Programs all the programs what I installed are listed so I can uninstall them from there, with other AKU's this never happens. A view programs are listed there and others won't, why I don't know? Maybe you know?
That's it for now,

Hello again haha,
Test results are here!
Installed Sprite backup, made an Image to storage card (self ececutable)!
Hard reset, looked if I can change the today screen and... it changes!!!
So today screen does not have a bug! I think PocketMechanic is causing the problem, because it also can clean the Registry (of WM5?), think I'm going to ask it Anton Tomov. Also SK Tools can make serious changes to your system (also WM5 compatible?).
Cheers...

Just one question (i apologise if it is just me being stupid!) the text size in the phone is perfect size but when I receive a text or write a text the font is huge. (not when looking at inbox but when I actually go into the message) Is there anyway I can change the font size to the same as the system font? Many thanks in advance
Also I miss my default "received a text message" notification from wm5 any idea where I can download it?
Anyone know of a way to change clock to 24hr setting?

The size of the font can be changed in Settings --> System --> Screen --> Text size. For the notofications for a new text message goto Settings --> Sounds & Notifications. And for your third question I would suggest Settings --> System --> Regional Settings --> Time...

In order to have the test message font the size I would like I have to have the system font tiny. Is there no way to make them both the same?
I know how to change the notification for the text message I wanted the default sound that came with wm5 to put back into my phone.
I can find no mention of a 24 hour clock under regional settings it will only allow me to have am and pm in either lower case or caps.

Giving a 12V JOLT!!! I find that riskier than trying out even an entested ROM!!

Can some let me know if this ROM contains the following AKU3.5 features:
- Internet Sharing (easy way to make Uni into a 3G USB modem)
- Full screen Terminal Services (VJ's app battles on Uni - think it's now a WM6 feature)
- Turn on/off WiFi from bubble (I think not from previous posts)
- Connect/disconnect GPRS from bubble (also think not)
Has anyone tested:
- Palm threaded SMS (too kewl)
Finally, does it change radio version, or does it leave whatever you already have installed (I use 1.13)
Thanks for feedback guys - watching this post with gr8 interest...

Hi Dape16,
Nice to see you here, thanks for je p.m.
I'm on Midget's as well, a so called Romhopper haha..
This is deffinitly a Vanilla version, and fast!
I've got the same problem as well, not all the time sometimes it need 'twice or tree times' a softreset.
Btw, with Midget's hacks is WM6 a lot faster!
Also I'm trying IGO now (realy.. fast), but still thinking about MN6 (tmc).
Free menory on the moment: 13 mb :o .
Cheers...
Leo
I also have the problem that after a soft reset, the screen wont respond. It loads Windows nice, but if I dont touch the screen within a couple of seconds it just freezes. It dosent happen every time though, mabye every fourth time, some time more often. I have an absolutely clean device, new flashed.
