Do not connect the Universal to your desktop unless you have ActiveSync 4.5 installed in the desktop or it will freeze your device.
Disable ActiveSync connection in Universal until ActiveSync is updated.

Regarding instruction 7:

I dont get what you mean by press Power + Light + Reset? Are you talking about the button on the phone? On my O2 XDA Atom Exec there is no light button..cuz when i open the bootloader exe it goes this is not a valid win 32 program. Bootloader is not meant to be opened from the PDa but from your computer but i cant open it.

I've never seen that, sounds like someone's either added in that popup as a joke, or it's from a ROM dump of one of the RTM or MVP builds, and your devices IMEI is different to the one it was for.

I know MVP's had the option of getting Crossbow, but they had to send their device to Microsoft to have it flashed. Perhaps these builds have something coded to the IMEI.

I have using it for 2 days. Initailly it seem difficult to install soft. But now easer, the RAM still down like WM 05, Soft Reset time quite longer then Ivan test 2's ROM. But the icon look very nice.

I followed the instructions TO THE LETTER for upgrading the ROM to Midget's WM6 using bootloader method and after using the MTTY Utility "set 14 0" I ran the JASJAR_WWE_13076_164_10900_wwe_ship.exe but I keep getting ERROR 101: Connection error!

Please help!

I was just following the instructions exactly.
I also tried re-running the MaUpdate_NoID but it said that I had the incorrect ROM.

ok dont follow thoses, at least not all of them.

ive modified them to suit the problem with wm6:

First download the mtty utility (http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=9864)

1. Take out the SD and SIM cards
2. Open ActiveSync and go to file > connection settings and Uncheck "Allow USB Connections". Then press Ok and close ActiveSync
3. Put in bootloader mode (Power + Light + reset) which brings up the "un-backlit" screen with "Serial" at the top and v1.XX at the bottom
4. Plug in USB cable DIRECTLY from PC to Universal (MAKE SURE NOT TO USE A USB HUB)
5. Open mtty utility / software
6. Select USB from the "Port" drop-down on the upper left corner of the dialog box and hit OK
7. Then another screen will come up. Hit enter and that will show "USB>"
8. Type "set 14 0" and hit enter
9. Unplug and soft reset

Thank you for replying, Midget. I tried everything you said and it is STILL hanging on the boot screen :(

I even re-flashed with the ROM again and went through all the steps. I am completely baffled as to why it's not working for me... :(

I tried both hard and soft resetting after the MTTY app and still nothing. After I type "set 14 0" (without quotes) the screen reads "HTCST ****HTCEUSB>" (the *s are actually a black rectangle and 3 other characters I don't recognize). Nothing changes on the Universal, it still remains in bootloader mode. Is this right?

Any other ideas?

hang on, you are getting stuck in bootloader or it's hanging on boot screen?

if its stuck in bootloader the solution is above, if your getting stuck on theboot screen try leaving it a bit longer or re-flashing the rom.

to re-flash the rom put the device into bootloader, connect to usb port (DON'T USE HUB) and run the upgrade program again :)

Sorry for the mixup, it's hanging on the splash screen where it says QTEK and lists the RADIO & ROM versions in small red letters.

I tried all the steps you mentioned in your last post. I put the device in bootloader again, connected to USB directly (no hubs) and re-ran the MaUpgradeUt_noID for your Vanilla ROM again. It completed successfully in a short time (the screen said it would take 20 minutes but it only took about 5). I then unplugged the device from USB and did a hard reset. The device started to reboot and then got stuck on the "QTEK" splash screen (not bootloader).

As for leaving it a bit longer, how long should I wait? I've waited about 5 minutes and still nothing....

I appreciate your prompt replies and help. I wish it was working, but it isn't. Should I just give up and go back to the old ROM?

Crossbow does not replace your EXT ROM, there are some blank ones you can reflash with on these forums if you use the search.

As for the people not detecting in XP, have you tried putting the device into bootloader mode *before* you connect to the USB port? Or tried a different USB port?

Having same problem, when running MaUpgradeUt_noID it says update successful but nothing is transferred. Bootloader (2.01) does change from serial to usb when plugged in, but when rebooted, same old wm5. Any solutions yet?

Please don't think this as picky, not intended that way... bootloader loads without backlight so it's hard to read the screen. It probably is in bootloader, just have to look very carefully :)

Following the instructions provided in one of the links at the start of this thread I have been able to recover my dead XDA Exec.

Just for info it died while trying to upgrade the ROM on a Vista machine running Mobile Device Center so yes it was my own fault.

The recovery took place on XP machine and I will not be trying that trick again!

Thanks. I did it at last.
First need to press the power and light button and at the same time do a reset. Do not release until you see the serial or usb interface from the top screen. Now connect the device to the system thru' usb. wait for the system to detect the device before doing the flashing. The rest of the step just follow the procedure that come with the rom. It should work.

Only thing need to take note is some rom may give you the error like country code error. For this you may need to overwrite certain file nk.nbf from Helmi_c_WM6_v.1.1 to your upgrade ROM files directory.

That should solve it.

Firstly a huge thanks to Midget_1990....u da man!! You helped me make my wife a happy camper. :)

I 1st read the thread about Sim Unlocking my wifes Universal (MDA Pro) and followed the instructions to the letter.....easy as pie and worked first time!

Then I read several threads about different WM6 versions for the Universal and opted for yours. Great choice!

Read the whole thread through 3x and read the wiki.....easy as pie and worked first time again!

My wifes Universal now sports a SuperCID sim-unlocked damn fast WM6 phone & O/S and everything so far works really well.

1. No probs with the phone dialler....it looks the nuts! Can make calls no probs.
2. No probs with Comm Manager....bluetooth works parfait and wi-fi hooked up instantly with great radio strength!
3. The O/S is absolutely super responsive.
Cannot connect to web via sim card yet, I assume I need to install a operator settings .cab file

OK just one problem that I can't overcome yet. There is no Sim Manager with this ROM. Am I the only one to have come across this? Or does WM6 handle sim contacts differently?

Got the T-mob UK cab file and can now connect to web via 3G or GPRS but no option to disconnect, so have to turn flight mode on and then off to disconnect (I had the cab file once that enabled a disconnect and timer, but cannot find it at present).

Still no Sim Manager yet though. Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry all forget to get back and report outcome. My wife couldn't be more pleased with her Universal now. Everything works beautifully now except the well documented lack of video calling, and I have to admit, we hardly ever used it on her device anyway, so no love lost there.

Sim Manager exe was found in Windows directory and a shortcut made and placed in the Startmenu/Programs folder; all is well.

Bottom line...WM6 Rocks big-time! It is the fastest O/S I have used since the days of WM2003SE with volatile memory. I'm seriously impressed with the responsiveness of this thing.

Memory=

Program: 17.xx mb
Storage: 26.xx mb

Battery on about 20%.

This is after 1.5 days without charge and NOT 1 reset since finalising the setup of this machine since about 5 days ago. No lag and no lockups at all.

Thanks again to Midget and all involved with the making of this ROM. It's so good my wife won't let me change it even If I came across a much better one where video calls works. This ROM simply works the way all ROMs should! :)

Glad you're enjoying the new ROM! Just wanted to add, TCPMP is great on WM6, so long as you've got a good radio installed... if it's really glitchy when streaming as if it's buffering, it's most likely a dodgy radio. I thought it was buffering for ages before I tried a new radio stack and saw the difference... works sweet as a nut now :D

i have the same problem exactly while upgrading to jwright's latest rom, i'm not connecting it to a hub it's directly connected to my laptop, i only see the word Serial changing for a second to USB the moment i unplug the device from my USB cable

any ideas please??!!

If you use Windows Vista, to solve the problem, you must uninstall mobile center and driver update for mobile devices... Reboot the Pc, set the PPC to Developer mode (the stuck mode :) ) and run mtty , USB, and type "set 14 0" and press Enter, unplug the device, reset and the mobile is done ;)

My jasjar is completly dead since about one week after upgrade to Crossbow WM6. I researched internet for all kind information and I get nothing to solve my problem.
My device has warranty and I thinked to use the warranty but I was afraid that the seller discovered that I did an upgrade that void warranty.
Then I found this amazing website that solved my problem in about 30 minutes.
I'm Portuguese and I dont have all the english words to show how I am greatfull for the person who writed on this forum the way to fix the boot screen stucked.

i am unable to update my O2 XDA exec ... first i got county code error.. and then bootloader mode said usb transfer failed...i tried both ROMUpgradeUt.exe and MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe. i was actully never able to upgrade any rom released on this site or others site for that matter... i can only update wat was released on O2 site.. i dont understand wat i am doin wrong?.. can someone please help me?.. how do i even find out wat boot loader version i have? .. 1.0 or 1.1?..

Urm... to enter bootloader just press *power* + *Light* + *reset* all at the same time... you should get a dark screen with no backlight. At the top it should say 'serial' when unplugged from pc, or 'usb' when plugged in. At the bottom it will say 'v.(whatever version of bootloader)'.

There are two types of ROM, packaged .exe's with everything included (like your operator's) or in separated files (nk.nbf, os_.nbf, radio.nbf). Bootloader is only required when they're separate files. If running an .exe like Jwrights, it will just run straight off without bootloader.

Start from there, if you need more help send me an IGM and I'll take you through the process step by step. It's actually more simple than it looks and you'll be fine after the first time :)

both gives me USB transfer failed

Guys i'm having trouble upgrading, ive read all i can on this fab site and i am now out of ideas.

The upgrade utility crashes after clicking next when the universal image is shown or it will crash after the next step when the conversion from version and to version is shown. Then nothing!
Then i get stuck at the boot screen and have to use the mtty to re-boot.

Tried: 1. upgrading from bootloader (v1.01). 2.unchecking usb connnection from activesync. 3. direct usb to pc connection. 4. tried 3 different usb cables. 5. redownloading ROMs and different ROMs (none work!). 6. MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe method. 7. removing SD card and sim card.
(just before the crash activesync 4.5 closes... if that gives any clues)

Please help i'm dying to try wm6.
I have upgraded many times before to the different flavours of wm5.

is it possible to convert .nbf to .nb0?

since i have failed to upgrade thru MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe and ROMUpgradeUt.exe method .. and even in boot loader mode it gives me.. USB transfer failed no matter how many times i tried.
i even tried swapin .nbo files wth .nbf thru offical installer.. but it gave me error after 100% that failed to create file .. i know it was risky and i could have briked my pone.. since it was stuck on Update utility screen on my pone. wen i tried turing off and on .. didnt work.. so tried official installer again.. and it updated fine. ( i was lucky) ..and desperate. so can someone tell me.. can i convert and .nbf to .nb0 so i can use official installer .. and update it thru there.. their installed contains.. diskimage_Ver.nb0, EBOOT.nb0 and ExtendedRom.img and other installer contains ms_.nbf, nk.nbf and radio_.nbf. so is it possible?

i will donate to site.. if someone help me with upgrade

Dude, this upgrade is for O2 Exec not for the version you have. No wonder u cant upgrade it.

Urm... totally different hardware and specs, therefor different drivers.... run along now, find XDA Atom forum. There you may have some joy.

any idea of why I don't have "USB" among the available options in mtty's port menu? activesync's USB connection is unchecked, wcescomm is not running, tried all my four USB ports, device is directly connected to my laptop, universal and laptop reset (hard- and soft-) and rebooted countless times by now, etc. No matter what, Mtty and UNI_exitbootloader simply won't see any usb port.
what else can i try?

what should i do?

make sure the deivce is connected to the pc before running MTTY, also I advise using MTTY 1.16.

No this is not possible in WM6, the best you can do to retain memory is ensure you close all apps. You can adjust cahce settings and pagefile to marginally increase free program memory, but it's hardly worth the effort.
20 MB should be sufficient to run almost any app on WM5 Wm6 though, so why do you need to increase it?

If I wold remain with 20MB, will be fantastic. But ... I use 2.02.02 wwe witch have win live, msn and many more features that I don't use (skype and google map in extended rom - but very stable), so after a reset I will remain with 21MB. After some working, with 16 MB. So.. phone loose from agility, never mind about increase cash, registry tweeking...etc. I don't understand why the cookers don't put the essentials and that's it, so after an install, we can put the programs on SD card. The way it is at the momment, you have it at the limit (with programs memmory).
I have a question after all ... instead I cook my own rom, I can edit an existing one and remove unneeded programs and increase pagepool? (I saw that you and laurentc will release an wizard for rom cooking after fixing the errors from last rom).

Now my Dopod 900 are completely dead, no matter how many times I sfot/Hard reboot it, just won't wake-up!

Firstly, check the Wiki: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Universal (it has a section on Upgrading and being stuck in the Bootscreen)

Second of all, try to run the ROM upgrade again, and make sure you follow the instructions once the upgrade is complete (ie, Remove cable and do a Hard Reset)

You need to upgrade your BootLoader version, please see the Wiki for details, according to your post you have Ver 1.00, you need 1.01 for a G3 device.

It would appear that the V1.2 doesn't actually work. I (and many other people) are running the V1.01 and it works fine

Additionally, the G3 device can run any V0.xx or V1.xx bootloader (G4 is V2.xx)
